Website Additions Are in the MakingWe are working on getting a website set up so you will be able to see what positions are available. There will be much more on this when things are finalized. Our goal is to have it fully functional before the end of the 1st quarter. Volunteer of the MonthWe are also going to award a Volunteer of the Month. We need each department chairman to nominate a volunteer from their department to be the Volunteer Of the Month. Then all nominations will be put into a hat and the VOM will be drawn. The VOM will have his/her photo posted over near the sign in kiosk and there will also be an article written about them in The Hummingbird. Each nominee must also have an article written about why they were nominated. You will only be able to win VOM one time in a given year. You may win VOM and also be nominated for one of the Annual Awards. Any non-winner may be nominated again. Only VOM winners may not be nominated for VOM again. Spotlighting Volunteers -- because Everyone Has A Story!Another thing we will do with the nominees is to have a few “Spotlight” volunteers chosen and written about in The Hummingbird. We have such a large diverse group of volunteers that we want to recognize as many as we can from those that have been nominated. Suggestions welcome ... contact Shari Kumler Be Thoughtful of OthersBreaks and Eating have once again become a problem. You are NOT allowed to eat in your work area. Please eat in the Tent, where Chick-Fil-A and Pizza Hut are. Also, please take your coffee break there, and please remember it is only a 10 minute break not a half hour. The Café is too small and crowded and should be left available for visitors. ATM is MandatoryThe ATM schedule is printed elsewhere. ATM is available every Tuesday from 8:30 to 11:30 am. The dates on the schedule are when NEW volunteers, and Outside Transportation Drivers, are taking their test. You can save a lot of time and help the ATM department out by using the “Off Tuesday” to take your annual renewal. “In Service” Meetings are REALLY Important!!!The “In Service” meetings will be held the first 2 weeks of February. ALL Chairman should have their meeting scheduled by now. Please plan to attend your “In Service” meeting for your department. This is when you meet other volunteers in your department and solve problems to help get everyone working in the same manner.

“in serviCe” meetings are Being sCheduLed in feBruarY

in room 520 in the Sharon Morse Bldg.

it is verY important that you attend the one for the department in which you work. Also, If you feel you may want to work in a different department this may be a good time to sit in on the meeting to get a feel of that department.

Listen and Learn. The bigger departments have 2 times/dates available for you to choose from. In these “In Service” meetings you get to meet other volunteers in your department, hear different problems/solutions, adjust your job description, sign your competency form (mandatory annually) and just get updated so that everyone is working in the same manner toward a common goal. It can be quite entertaining too. Your Chairman should be contacting you about your date and time.

the location: east Campus - 3rd floor Computer room the time: 8:00 to 11:30 am.

it is mandatory that every volunteer be recertified annually during their birth month.

We had a very nice Executive Committee meeting on the 8th and it was very well attended. These meetings are VERY important. The chairman of each department is kept up to date of the happenings/changes/notices around the hospital and then they give a report of what is going on in their department so we all are aware of what is

happening. Many discussions are held so that we all handle similar problems in the same way.

“Take A Chance” going on right nowthree lucky people will each win a beautiful Necklace, Earrings and Ring set on Valentines Day. Chance tickets are $2.00 for one and $5.00 for three.

We plan to continue the “Take a Chance” drawings for St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, etc. this year with something a little different each time.

We have just returned from Americasmart in Atlanta where we purchased some new beautiful items. They will be shipped throughout the year, we hope that everyone will stop by and shop with us , knowing that there purchases are helping the Hospital.

a Great Story to shareCarolyn Harrison applied for the Musician Auxiliary a few weeks ago, and recently completed orientation. She is a retired Registered Nurse who worked in this vicinity for many many years. She recently suffered a stroke, and is very happy to be recovering enough to be able to play the piano in Moffitt Cancer Care Center. She is a caring soul, and truly understands the myriad feelings and issues associated with illnesses such as cancer.

During our conversation about her schedule, Carolyn said “I told my Mother that I will be playing the piano in the Moffitt Care Center, and she is so excited that she has told all of her friends! She makes me feel like this is my first recital.” I chuckled, and asked how old her mother is. “97” she replied, to which I spontaneously announced that I believe Carolyn might be the only musician I know in our music group who has a mother living in the area, and still cheering her daughter on to great things. Carolyn laughed, and said she is concerned that her mother might bring an audience the first time she plays!. This is beyond sweet. ~~by pat Kronk, Chair

Acknowledges the Patient and/or Visitor:• Follow the 10 – 5 rule: at 10 feet smile and acknowledge and at 5 feet speak. • Smile, make eye contact and greet them in a pleasant manner ...If they look confused or they are looking for something, ask if there is anything you can do for them. • Anytime you see someone looking for a sign that means they are probably looking for something and could use some help. • NEVER ask “How Do You Feel”, you know they are sick or nervous because they are in the hospital. Introduce Yourself• Depending on the situation and the place you are in ... State your name and your role at TVRH. Highlight skills and expertise of self and other healthcare team members. Duration• Depending on the situation and the place you are in ...Give the Patient/ Visitor a time expectation, even if it is just a time for your return. Keep patient/ visitor informed as to the amount of time a procedure or process will take. • If you don’t know the procedure/ process time see if you can find out. Never guess, ask someone in the know. • If there is a wait time give them the time expectation of that wait. Explanation• Depending on the situation and place you are in ...Keep patient/visitor informed by explaining process & procedures. • Assist patient/visitor to have a clear expectation of what will be occurring. • Get correct information from the proper person. Thank You• Thank the patient/visitor for choosing TVRH. • Express appreciation that they have chosen TVRH as their Health Care Facility. • Ask if there is anything else you can do for the patient/visitor before ending the interaction.

Here is Her Story ...Before retirement Nance worked in government industry and lastly at Seco Electric. As she was leaving, her boss asked her what she was going to do. Nance answered that she was going to volunteer at TVRH, substitute for hospice and be a neighborhood crime watcher.

She has volunteered in PACU for seven years and has been the Chair for the past 2-1/2 years. PACU covers pre-op and post-op patients, which includes 24 beds and doing anything and everything to help the patients and staff. She has all her positions filled and has 7 subs.

Nance knows how to build comaraderie. The success she has in her department is due to team building where everyone knows each other’s names, pitches in together, treats each other as adults, and uses “please” and “thank you”! As a result, she has a well-run team, every day. She says it’s all the great people she has volunteering with her.

Nance claims that what she does in her volunteer passions is what it is all about... helping and serving others as she does, and she does volunteer at TVRH, substitutes for hospice and is a neighborhood crime watcher.

CongratuLations nanCe!

They were: Marion Berg Theresa McFadden Karen Bontz Evan Richards Millie Card Myrna Morjoseph Bev Edwards Bob Prince Doreen Henning Charles Ricker Bob Lester Lorraine Ricker Deedee Lester Fae Rogers Rev. Ron L’Huillier Gisele Silvestri Shirley McConnell Bev Sweeney Gerald Tucker Posthumously

Honorary Lifetime Members is one of the 3 new categories of Auxiliary memberships established in the 2013 Auxiliary Handbook that allows alternative ways for individuals to be involved in the Auxiliary. This special recognition category can be granted to a Retired Member after a minimum of seven (7) years of distinguished volunteer service to The Villages Regional Hospital and a minimum of 2000 total hours served. Honorary Lifetime Members

receive the Hummingbird so they can stay involved with the Auxiliary and they are invited every year to the luncheon.

The other two categories are:

associate members – an individual who retains or indicates an interest in the purposes of the Auxiliary but does not participate in The Villages Regional Hospital’s volunteer service program.

retired members – active members of the Auxiliary for a minimum of three (3) years, who have given a minimum of 500 volunteer service hours during that time and must retire from active volunteer service, due to health or personal reason.

The deadline for nominating Honorary Lifetime Members is March 1st of each year. Candidates for can be nominated by any Active Member but must be approved by a majority vote of the Executive Committee.

Who comes to your mind that would fit this category? Take the time to nominate them as a recognition of their past service and dedication.

As Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe (YOTS) continues to expand and grow, it seemed to make sense to create separate awards categories that are more customized to their “non-hospital” environment. This allows us to recognize the 20% of our volunteers who make a difference in our hospital with their fundraising activities at YOTS.

The Steering Committee from YOTS has decided on the following possible award categories:

reliability An auxiliary member working at Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe who has shown outstanding dedication in their responsibilities – always covering their shift or ensuring they have a substitute.

rookie of the Year An individual who has recently joined Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe as a volunteer but has already shown a remarkable level of skills and dedication.

artistic Creativity An individual or team, who has demonstrated a talent for making the Shoppe more appealing to customers by the creation of displays or other implementation of unique ideas to showcase items for sale.

above and Beyond An individual who has shown a style of dealing with co-workers that makes them feel part of the team and confirms their value to YOTS.

Nomination forms have been created are available in the YOTS office for volunteers, shift leaders, managers or even customers to nominate workers for these new awards. The deadline is Sunday, March 1, 2015 and then the winners of these awards will be announced at the April Installation luncheon. If you have noticed a special volunteer at YOTS, please pick up a form and tell us about them.

The Musicans that add so much to the waiting room areas have recently been brought under the Auxiliary umbrella. Their duties do not relate to what they do. So here are their awards.

unsung hero award Member of Musician Auxiliary whose reliability, adaptability, dedication and commitment has added to the service of the music program.

above & Beyond award Member of Musician Auxiliary who exemplifies the core values of the music program and whose service and contribution are significant to the success of the music program.

music & more award Musician Auxiliary member who actively promotes team building and growth of the program.

musician sensitivity award Member of Musician Auxiliary who embodies the aesthetic value of music, demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of listeners, and whose musicianship provides calm, support and comfort to those who hear him/her perform.

As you go by a musician as they perform, if they give you a lift, please give them a lift by nominating for them at the ballot box close to them.

2 New annuaL award CategoriesIt has been determined by our Ye Old Thrift Shoppe and Musicians that their duties are so different from the rest of the volunteers around the hospital, that they need their own award catagories. So the Chair of each board and her leadership have come up with awards specific for them.

featuring our fundrai ersthis Year’s CruiseThe cruise will be for 7 nights, starting April 11, 2015,

traveling from Miami to Nassau and Bermuda, then back to Miami. We are fortunate to have Ocala Travel and Shelley Morjoseph working together to plan this great

fundraiser. There are over 100 people signed up and room for more.

If you have been thinking about going, the final payment due January 20, 2015. For more information call Sharon Kaminski at 352-205-5515. 2014 women’s goLf eXPoThis year TVRH Auxiliary/Foundation participated in the 2014 Women’s Golf Expo. This gave us a chance to mix and mingle, to explain who we are, what we do, and for whom we do it. A stop at our booth gave attendees a chance to win a beautiful women’s golf gift basket; in addition, they received a brief explanation of some of our major fund raisers.

Our main focus was to inform the people how much you, the volunteers, do for our hospital and patients, and how our fund raisers support your efforts. They also learned

how our fund raising helps meet the challenges of a hospital expansion that will double its present size.

We invited our eye-catching Bear, dressed appropriately in his finest volunteer garb; task with scouting for new recruits.

And the winner of the golf gift basket was Kathy Bartoszak from The Village of Poinciana.

Since we had such fun at the Golf Expo, look for us at Golf Fest, March 2015. See you all there!

how the auXiLiarY is invoLved in fundraisingFirst, we need to remember that TVRH is a non-profit hospital, which makes volunteers so important. We do the tasks that we can do to assist the paid staff so they have the time to do the work that only they can do.

We also supply the people resources for fundraising that helps support the hospital with the “above and beyond” expenses such as:

•Specializedendoscopyequipment

•Outfittedlabareas

•Helpedpurchasedastate-of-the-artMagnetic Resonance Imaging (“MRI”) unit

•EquippedanewChestPainCenter

•UpgradedoperatingroomswiththeHarmony®LED Surgical Lighting System

•In2012-2013wepurchased–3PulsedXenexUV Lamp Disinfection Systems. The newest weapon in the fight against Hospital Acquired Infections(HAIs)

We do this by working to sell See’s Candy, promote fundraising cruises, and host the annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala as well as supporting the on-going activities like the Gift Gallery, Café, and Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe with the goal of raising $10M for the expansion of our hospital.

But mostly, we donate our EIDET (see page 4). When we give attention in service, listening ears, interest in both patients and visitors and ensure that the hospital is a caring facility.
