It is my honor to serve as your Hadassah Southern California President and represent our local members from San Luis Obispo in the north to San Diego in the south. Together, we make a significant impact on the world through our support of Hadassah’s life-saving medical research and our advocacy efforts on behalf of women and children.

As we prepare to celebrate Passover—a celebration of freedom —I find myself reflecting on Hadassah’s tagline: THE POWER

OF WOMEN WHO DO. What does it mean to be a woman who does and how do we define power? To me, a Hadassah woman who uses her voice to bring about positive legislative change is a woman who does. I define power as 330,000 members, Associates and supporters—found across every U.S. congressional district—making an impact at the local, state, and federal levels. Together, we amplify our impact. We are the women who DO.

I encourage you to think about how far we’ve come as women as you gather around your Seder tables. Remember that in our not so distant past, women won the right to vote, fought to be recognized as a dominant force in the workplace, and were empowered to run for office. We owe it to the generations who came before us to give voice to what we are committed to and make our voices heard.

What Hadassah domestic policy issues speak to you? Whether it is gender equity in medical research or women’s preventive health, affordable childcare, combatting human trafficking or the U.S.-Israel relationship, I encourage you to become an active Hadassah advocate. Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] and visit www.hadassah.org/advocate.

Thank you for the important work that you do.

I wish you and the people you love a sweet Pesach.

Debbie Kessler

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. ~Anne Frank

As Hadassah women, we have an incredible opportunity to live a life of tikkun olam (repairing the world). Whether it was 50 years ago or 50 days ago, think back to why you joined Hadassah. Was your intention to impact your family, your community, your world? Perhaps you joined because you are committed to helping to find cures through Hadassah’s world-class research for the diseases that plague us today. Or maybe you joined to feel connected with others, and develop a sisterhood of like-minded women.

Regardless of why you joined Hadassah, know that you are part of a network of 330,000 members, Associates, and supporters across the country. YOU are making an impact and YOU have a voice that is being heard. In this spring issue of Kaleidoscope, you will find many ways to make your voice heard. I invite you to read this issue carefully and find something that inspires you, something to which you want to devote your energy. As always, I would love to hear from you ([email protected]) and help you find a meaningful connection to Hadassah.

With much gratitude for all you do,

Lauren Rothman

How many times have you made a New Year’s resolution to start the year off right by eating healthier? Exercising more? Taking better care of yourself? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you’re not alone.

Every Bite Counts is Hadassah’s newest initiative—a nutrition program which introduces innovative recipes, practical tips, and heart healthy cooking to help women stay healthy across the generations. The third in a three-part initiative to bring awareness about heart health to the forefront, Every Bite Counts is an opportunity to provide continued education to women about the importance of recognizing risk factors and living a healthier lifestyle. Hadassah is committed to saving lives and advancing women’s heart health in the US, Israel, and around the world.

Bring a friend and join Hadassah Southern California on Tuesday, May 23, for a special launch of Every Bite Counts at our annual Spring Conference. Meet

Hadassah’s new food guru and National spokesperson for the campaign, Shannon Sarna—editor of the popular Jewish food blog The Nosher and contributing writer to Kveller.com. Shannon will entertain you with a cooking demonstration, delight you with her wit and share the importance of healthy eating. You will also hear first-hand about the cutting-edge work being done in the area of heart health and research at Hadassah Hospital, and how it connects with behaviors and actions in our everyday lives.

We promise this is something you won’t want to miss!

Hadassah takes seriously its responsibility to uphold the Jewish commitment to social action and social justice, known as Tikkun Olam—repairing the world. The power of Hadassah is far reaching—members can be found in every congressional district, with a collective voice of over 330,000 members, Associates and supporters. Central to Hadassah’s mission, advocacy helps our members realize that they have the power to be a dynamic force for change in American society.

Throughout Hadassah Southern California, members are making their voices heard on issues of importance by participating in Day in the District—a designated day when small groups of Hadassah members meet face-to-face with local offi cials when they are home from Washington, D.C.

According to Niki Stokols, Hadassah Southern California Advocacy Chair, “My family was always politically aware.” This helped shape her passion for advocacy well into adulthood, so when Niki joined Hadassah, she had found a path to make her voice heard. “I love being a part of Hadassah. You can take the step beyond casting your vote by meeting face-to-face with your elected offi cials. You can speak to them directly about the issues that matter to you.”

Lisa Aisner, Long Beach/Orange County Area Leader, is energized by her participation in Day in the District, “It is very empowering to sit across the table with other Hadassah women by your side, and speak in a collective voice to decision makers and policy leaders. I credit Hadassah for encouraging women to express their views.”

As a women’s health organization, Hadassah naturally focuses on advocating for issues aff ecting women and children. In Speaking Out to Protect Women’s Health Coverage, Hadassah members are placing pressure on elected offi cials to ensure that any new health reform provides women with access to free, annual well-woman visits—including services like blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings, and nutrition counseling—which lead to early detection and save lives.

Already Hadassah achieved results last term, when grassroots advocates helped secure six congressional co-sponsors for the bipartisan “Research for All Act. Demand Gender Equity in Medical Research!” This was prompted by data showing that more women die of heart disease than from any other disease combined, and yet it is frequently misdiag-nosed or overlooked entirely in women. Up until now, research, diagnostic tools, and treat-ments are based on men, or male animals.

In May, fi fteen women from Hadassah Southern California will travel to Sacramento to participate in the Jewish Public Aff airs Committee of California (JPAC) Advocacy Day. There they will engage in meaningful dialogue with elected offi cials on issues of importance to Hadassah and the Jewish community, and will hear from issue experts and legislators on cutting-edge issues facing Californians.

Metro Los Angeles and San Diego Areas are getting in on the action too, planning training days for their members to familiarize themselves with the talking points provided by Hadassah when talking with elected offi cials. The process is carefully explained,

and no prior advocacy knowledge is needed to participate in the training.

When it comes to advocating for women’s health, Hadassah in the United States is lock-step with Hadassah in Israel. Hannah Cohen, new Advocacy Chair in San Diego, has had a long history of public advocacy in her personal and professional life, and is, “excited to teach Hadassah women how to advocate for women’s health and for human rights to get important legislation passed.”

So it was a great moment for Hannah, when in February 2017, she met Dr. Diana Flescher, Women’s Health and Internal Medicine specialist from Jerusalem, at a meeting with 50 other Hadassah women in San Diego. Dr. Flescher who is a member of the Advisory Board at the Linda Joy Pollin Cardiovascular Wellness Center for Women at Hadassah Hospital, was one of Jerusalem’s fi rst advocators for women’s health at the public health policy level. In 2014, Hadassah helped convene a special hearing in the Knesset in its Committee for the Status of Women and Gender Equity in which experts and patients spoke passionately about the need for raising awareness about women’s heart health. Committee Chair, MK Aliza Lavie, charged the Ministry of Health to create a coalition immediately to advance awareness of women’s unique heart issues.

If you would like to take part in Hadassah’s advocacy eff orts and make your voice heard, contact your local Hadassah offi ce. (see page 2)

At what moment does a person take the step to become an Annual Giver? At a mesmerizing presentation by a Hadassah doctor? After encountering a patient whose life was saved at Hadassah? Each person arrives at their decision in their own time, when they are ready. There is no singular path.

But what if your group already made the decision ahead of time, as is the case with Northern Area’s Doria Group. Judy Silver explained, “We require every active member to give at least $200 a year. At our stage in life, it is easier than planning big events. We enforce it, and it seems to have worked well for us for over a decade.” Judith Moss explained their thinking, “We want to enjoy ourselves but our whole purpose is to give to Hadassah. Annual Giving is an affordable base; we decided this together as a group.” Northern Area’s South Valley Group operates on the same principle. Nancy Norris expressed her view, “When we founded South Valley 30 years ago, a prerequisite of joining was a minimum donation of $360. We created the ethos of giving; you have to make an upfront commitment. People still like it. It’s a good habit.”

The same good habit permeates in Sabra Hadassah of the Desert, where almost all active members are Annual Givers. Marcia Becker described features of her group, “We are a small community of retirees. We don’t have to be convinced, we understand why we give.” Phyllis Pepper holds similar views. “We talk about it at every meeting. When you think how little $15 a month is, it is very simple. Hadassah needs the money, and it is simple for us to give it.” Phyllis added, “I feel strongly that all board members should be Annual Givers.”

Similarly, Barbara Alhadeff of Long Beach/Orange County’s Sharon Carmel Group says, “A huge portion of our group is Chai or Silver Chai members, even people unable to attend regularly. Barbara generously credits their Annual Giving Chair, Andrea Kaiser. “She is a poster-woman for Hadassah, always fully prepared to champion Annual Giving at every turn. Hadassah knows it can count on us.”

In 2016, Hadassah Southern California raised over $200,000 through its Annual Giving Program. The challenge is out there for each group to consider the benefits of becoming an “all givers” group. To find out more about Annual Giving, contact your local Hadassah office. (see page 2)

“What exactly does Zionism mean to you?” This is the question that Hadassah is challenging us to discuss through the Defining Zionism in the 21st Century series. Defining Zionism in the 21st Century is a Hadassah video series that features a speaker each month, sharing diverse perspectives in short, easy-to-share segments designed to start conversations. “Zionism is many things to many people,” says Ellen Hershkin, Hadassah National President. “As the largest Jewish women’s organization, Hadassah has a crucial role to play in engaging others in these critical conversations.” The most recent speaker

featured was Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer, President of the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, who explored generational shifts around Israel, taking a close look at the values we must recognize and wrestle with to bridge divides and advance meaningful conversations.  Each video is accompanied by a discussion guide and Hadassah members are encouraged to continue the conversations at home with their families, at their Hadassah meetings, and on social media.

Hadassah Southern California is partnering locally with The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles to bring live Defining Zionsim in the 21st Century discussions to temples and congregations throughout Southern California. The first discussion took place at Sinai Temple on March 15th and tackled the crucial question: “Is Zionist now a bad word?” and explored what support for Israel looks like for younger Jews. The panel was moderated by Rabbi David Wolpe, Sinai Temple, and the panel included Rabbi Sarah Bassin, Temple Emanuel of Beverly

Hills; Sam Yebri, Co-Founder, 30 Years After; and Eitan Arom, Staff Writer, Jewish Journal. To access the Defining Zionism in the 21st Century video series, visit www.hadassah/org/definingzionism
