Why Avaya for Data? Before starting through the mechanics of designing a data solution based on Avaya technology, the fundamental question you may have is why use Avaya over another data vendor?

Avaya has been working for many years to bring converged communications to millions of users across the globe. Together with its business partners, Avaya jointly delivers innovative integrated IP systems - across Voice, Contact Centre, LANs, WANs, Data Centres and VPNs. Our solutions are designed to leverage today's networks while providing cost-effective evolution to the networks of tomorrow. From design, installation and launch of new networks, to the upgrade, support and management of existing systems, Avaya's portfolio of solutions is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. This section will give you some of the key benefits, whether they are business, technical or ease of support.

Avaya LAN solutions are based on a simple two layer model - core and edge. This makes designing a solution a lot easier. You just need to get the appropriate edge switches for the number of user devices required and then deploy core switches that give you the performance and resilience to support the solution.

Avaya is at the forefront of driving Gigabit to the desktop and 10G and beyond in the core. There is a big shift in the market from 10/100 and Avaya is ideally placed to offer your customers the solutions they are now demanding.

Avaya’s industry leading Switch Clustering resilience technology supports the modern converged network, carrying mission critical and real-time voice and video, delivering 99.999% availability.

Improve Employee Productivity

• Increase employee productivity and effectiveness through better responsiveness from existing applications and from higher reliability and performance.

• Maximise uptime of LAN designs and improve bandwidth utilisation by using Switch Clustering technology (Split Multi-Link Trunking) in place of Spanning Tree.

Reduce Costs

• Avaya data switches have been carefully designed to minimise power consumption, providing lower running costs and a reduced carbon footprint, and requiring less cooling. Independent testing has demonstrated Avaya switches consume up to 40% less energy than competing switches from other vendors.

• Lower the operational costs in services and equipment - with a total cost of ownership 25% lower than other vendors.

• Simple two tier architecture easier to install and troubleshoot. • LAN switches capable of supporting real time applications

without deploying complex Layer 3 switches at the edge. • Use of stackable switches at the edge allows a “pay as you

grow” network deployment. • Quickly deploy new revenue generating multimedia

applications, such as contact centre capability for more staff, without having to incur the cost of subsequent upgrades.

• Achieve better utilisation of the network through the use of SMLT technology, IP Multicast and better unified network management tools.

• Enable scaleable growth with more efficient use of bandwidth. • Reduce skilled staff costs through use of simpler configuration

and maintenance. • Minimal staff training requirements as configuration uses

industry standard CLI commands.

Channel Leverage • A lot of customers are already using Avaya voice products that

could allow you to sell a single vendor voice and data solution (or upgrade).

• Best in class technical offering as supported by independent analysts, e.g. Tolly Group.

• Differentiated offering in a highly competitive market (i.e. 30+ Gold resellers of Cisco).

• Cisco designs are complex to implement compared to Avaya. To achieve rapid failover, Cisco rely on a combination of protocols at both layer 2 and layer 3. Layer 3 to the edge requires the enhanced images to support routing protocols which doubles the cost of a switch.

LAN Design Principles This document identifies some of the key points to focus on when designing a customer’s data infrastructure. The types of design can normally be split between two types:-

1. Small Building (this is only a notional size, a small building could have more floors, it is all down to the distance of the cable runs and the applications the customer will be using).

2. Campus or Mid-to-Large building (only 3 floors are shown in the example but this topology would apply to much taller buildings as well).

Small Building

For a small building (typically with one or two floors and small distances for cable runs) each wiring closet will have a stack of edge switches and edge switches will also be used in the comms room to provide the aggregation point for the servers and local network access.

[8]

Mid-to-Large Building

For a building with multiple floors and long cable runs, each wiring closet will have a stack of edge switches. There will be core switches in the comms room and potentially at the bottom of each riser depending on distances and capacity requirements.

For edge switches the standard is gradually moving to Gigabit to the desktop, although this is often not justified, and for the connections between the core and edge switches, 10G is becoming increasingly common. Avaya has an excellent range of switching products (such as the ERS 5000 and 4500 ranges) to support these requirements and provide a future proof LAN infrastructure.

Capturing Customer Requirements Before designing a data network, you will need to benchmark what the customer has already, and what they want to do with the new solution. Here are some pointers to the questions you should ask the customer :

• Number of buildings and distance between buildings • Type of cabling between buildings / floors, eg. CAT5e, 62.5

micron fibre • Number of floors in each building • Number of LAN points required per floor • Distance from each riser to the furthest user on each floor • Number & Location of servers, and type of connection

(CAT5/5e/6 or Fibre) • What applications will the customer be running (eg. Voice,

multicast video) and is this required on all LAN points or just specific locations / users?

• What level of resilience is the customer looking for? • What is the customer’s strategic strategy? Do they wish to

deploy VoIP, wireless networking or video? • Does the customer use any legacy protocols such as

Appletalk or IPX? • Does the customer have specific applications and

technology which rely on Layer 2 or Layer 3 designs?

To build the configuration, start at the edge of the network. For each floor of each building, take the number of users and the type of applications being used and select the edge switch (each floor/building could need different types of switch) :

• Ethernet Routing Switch 2500 • Ethernet Routing Switch 4500 • Ethernet Routing Switch 5500 / 5600 • Ethernet Routing Switch 8300

[10]

Establish the total number of users. Divide this by either 24 or 48 (dependant on which edge switch type is selected) and see how many switches are required. Add the number of uplinks required from each stack (typically at least two) and double-check there are enough ports, as products like the 2500, 4500, 5500 and 5600 use shared ports for either fibre or copper. If the number of switches is 8 or less and the users are all close enough (for standard Ethernet over CAT5e the users should be within 90 metres) to the wiring closets, then stackable switches should be selected and located here, otherwise add additional stacks and spread them around the floor (dependent on space and accessibility). If the LAN is used for data only traffic (ie. no voice), and there are only one or two floors, only edge switches will be required and each stack can be connected to eachother. For larger buildings, or where Layer 3 routing is required, then a core switch will be required to provide the aggregation and routing. The core switch(es) will normally be located in the comms room or in a large building, at the bottom of each riser. The links between buildings will also be connected to the core switch. For SX fibre uplinks the distance recommendations are 220 metres for 62.5 micron diameter MMF or 500 metres for 50 micron diameter MMF. For CAT5/5e/6 uplinks the distance limit is 90 metres. From each stack provide at least two connections (uplinks) back to the core switch, preferably from different switches in the stack and using link aggregation (Multi Link Trunking). Count up the number of connections required and select the core switch :

• Ethernet Routing Switch 5500 / 5600 • Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 • Ethernet Routing Switch 8800

The following sections show the key LAN products and how to build a complete solution.

Choosing the Right Product LAN Selector The flowchart on the next page allows you to identify quickly what is potentially the most suitable product to meet the customer’s requirements. This is only a quick lookup and, for example where fibre is required, the appropriate SFPs also need to be added :

Layer 3: Layer 3 is traditionally required to route IP traffic on a LAN and to minimise broadcast traffic between different parts of the LAN. Layer 3 Ethernet Routing Switches typically have stacks of ethernet switches behind them to connect PCs and telephones on to the LAN.

Inline power: Does the customer need to power IP telephones over the LAN? This could be to reduce cabling costs on a new building.

The 2500, 4500 and 5500 / 5600 products can all be stacked up to 8 units high depending on how many ports the customer requires (up to a maximum of 400 ports in the stack).

IP routing: choices are static or dynamic protocols. Static is inflexible and has to be programmed on installation. This may be appropriate when a simple Layer 3 topology is adopted. Dynamic would involve using routing protocols like RIP or OSPF.

The Avaya switches can be stacked within families. The 2500 can be stacked using the rear ports and using included Stack Software. The 4500 switches can be stacked together flexibly, and all the 5000 family members (5500 and 5600) can be stacked together in any combination.

New SFP Transceivers

There are new SFPs available that have superseded the AA1419013-E5 (SX) and AA1419015-E5 (LX).

The new SFPs are AA1419048-E6 (SX) and AA1419049-E6 (LX).

These newer SFPs also come with a Digital Diagnostic Monitoring Interface (DDMI). DDMI allows these SFPs to ultimately provide enhanced interface-level information reporting. This enhanced digital interface allows real-time access to device operating parameters, and includes optional features such as soft control and monitoring of SFP interface signals.

The 2500 has stacking capability using the two Gigabit copper ports at the rear which allows 8 switches per stack.

New sales of 2500 series switches have stacking enabled by default, however note that earlier shipments of these switches required a Stacking License Kit so upgrades may be required to enable this feature. Each kit contains a License Certificate with a License Authorization Code (LAC) and uses the same license file management / generation process via the Avaya Licensing portal as currently used for the ERS 5000 Advanced Routing License.

A “license.dat” file needs to be generated, downloaded and installed on each switch for all ERS 2500 switches that need stacking functionality adding (instructions are on the License Certificate).

License files can be added and removed on the switch. The license.dat file unlocks stacking functionality on the switch and allows the rear ports to be set to “Stacking Mode”.

If a non stack-enabled unit is set to default, the license.dat file is removed but the last rear port operating mode will be preserved to allow a stack to continue functioning.

Ethernet Routing Switch 5000 Series The ERS 5000 Series is made up of the established 5500 Series and the new, high performance 5600 Series switches. All 10 models in the 5000 Series can be stacked together, thereby providing a highly flexible range of deployment options for every customer requirement.

Ethernet Routing Switch 5600 Series The Ethernet Routing Switch 5600 Series is a set of premium, fixed-format Ethernet Switches that provide high-performance connectivity in a scalable pay-as-you-grow stackable solution, allowing up to 400 ports per stack. The model range provides traditional high-density and innovative ultra high-density options for Gigabit Ethernet, and also medium density Fiber aggregation. The products feature field-replaceable redundant power supplies, and optional Standards-based Power-over-Ethernet.

The 5600 Series is part of the broader 5000 Series of products, and offers a complete portfolio with options ranging from 24 through to 98 ports per Switch, with or without PoE, with Power redundancy options, and full, no-compromise interoperability across the product line. The evolution and development life cycle demonstrate a proven track record for unbeatable value and exceptional investment protection.

The 5600 introduces a per-unit stacking capacity of 144Gbps per switch and a total stacking backplane of 1.152Tbps for a stack of eight units. This is unprecedented in the industry and ensures optimal performance for delay-sensitive application traffic traversing the stack. 5600 models come with two in-built auto-sensing stacking ports for simple, quick and cost-effective stacking. This design frees up 5600 uplink ports for dedicated connectivity to the backbone. The 5600’s non-blocking architecture further ensures full bandwidth across stack, uplink and user ports. ERS5600 switches can be stacked with one another or with any 5500 unit. When connected to an adjacent 5500, the 5600 automatically adjusts to the 5500’s stack bandwidth of 80 Gbps. This enhanced flexibility provides the opportunity to mix and match port configurations based on operational needs, while preserving existing 5500 investment.

Deployment scenarios The ERS 5600 is a flexible solution that can be deployed in a variety of enterprise environments. These include:

High-density wiring closet With its non-blocking design, high density GbE and integrated 10GbE ports, the ERS 5600 is perfectly suited as a wiring closet solution for high-availability LAN edge user connectivity. Up to eight ERS 5600 switches can be combined into a single stack with each unit providing at least two 10GbE XFP ports for high-performance uplinks to the core or aggregation layers in the network. ERS 5698 models further provide high-density economical GbE connectivity with the added flexibility of up to 6 SFP ports per switch for gigabit or 100fx fibre connections. With the ability to support Power over Ethernet across all its ports, the ERS 5600 is an economical and flexible wiring closet/edge solution in support of desktop and powered devices.

High-performance data center edge

The high-performance, low-latency and high-availability requirements of the data center make the ERS 5600 a perfect solution for the data center edge. By utilizing the ERS 5600’s innovative horizontal stacking capability - a switch at the top of each server rack, stacked horizontally - the ERS 5600 can support high-density server connections. Up to 384 GbE ports and multiple 10GbE uplinks can be deployed in this configuration Avaya’s Switch Cluster solution (SMLT) can further enhance overall resiliency through addition of a second horizontally- stacked “top of rack” switch. Connected servers can then be “dual homed” to separate 5600 stacks, which in turn appear as a single, logical switch to the network. This enables active-active connections, load balancing and sub-second failover across the stacks. These features make the 5600 a truly cost-effective data center solution that combines always on resiliency with full non-blocking capabilities.

Highly scalable small to medium core The ERS 5600 can also serve as a high-performing, feature-rich core solution. With its high-density 10GbE and SFP ports (up to 64 10GbE and 192 SFP ports per stack), the 5632FD is particularly well-suited to core applications. Coupled with dynamic routing protocol (RIP/OSPF) and VRRP support as well as in-unit redundant power supplies, the ERS 5600 can provide a low-cost, resilient small core solution. ERS 5600s can further act as a virtual switch cluster to other ERS 2500, 4500 or even third party access switches using Avaya’s switch clustering (SMLT) technology. ERS 5600s in this configuration can provide up to 800 ports and over 2.3 Terabits of

For network designs that require a third “Distribution” tier, the ERS 8300 is an ideal option. The switch provides:

• High-density 1G and 10G for both the core and access tier connectivity requirements

• High performance and low latency to ensure optimized application performance

• Switch Clustering to extend sub-second fail-over and full session load-sharing across the network infrastructure — from User to Application

The ERS 8300 incorporates Avaya’s advanced resilient technology Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) which provides complete protection against any individual component, link or node failure. This solution provides for sub-second recovery combined with user session-based load-balancing — all leveraging standards-based link aggregation at the network edge (user or server).

Deploying the ERS 8300 in the core is the ideal solution for delivering highly available services. As a stand-alone device, ERS 8300 provides an extremely robust platform for resilient networking. The system supports dual redundant switch fabric modules, N+1 power supplies and hot-swappable modules and fan trays.

Performance Architecture

At the heart of the ERS 8300 is a passive backplane design and a distributed forwarding architecture that leverages the advantages of dual N-1, active-active Switch Fabrics. The 720 Gbps Crossbar and the 8394SF Switch Fabric module deliver up to 464Gbps of genuine data throughput and 345Mpps of frame-forwarding performance per switch. Putting these figures into a business context, an ERS 8300 Core Switch Cluster can transport more than 60,000 average-sized office files per second, and still not be subject to contention.

Power over Ethernet options The 8348TX-PWR module provides inline power to any IEEE 802.3af compliant devices such as IP phones, wireless access points, net cameras, security, lighting devices, and access control devices. Standards-based equipment means that customers are not forced to tie themselves to any one vendor, as the switch has the flexibility to power multiple vendors’ 802.3af devices. It can supply power up to 15.4 watts per port, meeting 802.3af standards, sufficient to supply any standards compliant attached devices.

The 8348GT modules compliment the 8348TX modules and provide unpowered or 802.3af powered 10/100/1000 ports. They can supply

Power over LAN Switches Introduction

Power over LAN is an important value added feature of some of Avaya’s LAN switches. Power over Ethernet (PoE) is widely deployed in IPT and provides a cost effective mechanism for providing power for a wide variety of Ethernet devices such as IP phones, Wireless LAN access points and security cameras.

Avaya switches provide standards compliant IEEE 802.3af power over the LAN to allow powering of a wide range of Avaya and 3rd party devices.

The Avaya PoE solution is highly sophisticated and provides a number of enhanced features, the main ones are indicated below:-

•••• Provides up to 15.4 Watts per port (maximum specified in standard)

•••• Power is allocated according to actual device requirement (making best use of the available power)

•••• Switch automatically determines whether power is required on a per port basis

•••• Each port can be allocated a power priority to ensure that power is provided for the most critical ports.

•••• Every port is protected against cable faults (such as shorts). •••• Every PoE switch has the option of utilising resilient power

supplies. The attributes highlighted above are available in a number of Avaya LAN switches. These are described in some detail in previous sections but a brief summary is given below.

2526T-PWR The 2526T-PWR is a stackable 24 port 10/100 switch, with a flexible choice of uplinks. 12 ports have PoE capability.

A 2526T-PWR can provide a total of up to 168watts of PoE flexibly across the 12 of the 24 ports with the built in AC power supply. That is equivalent to 10 ports of 15.4Watts or an average of 14.0watts across all 12 ports, or any combination in between.

Stackable Switch Power The 470 (legacy), 2500, 4500 and 5500 switch families all make use of an optional supplementary power source which performs two roles:

• Redundant power for the in-switch power supply • Boosts PoE to support 802.3af across all ports (15.4w)

This product is called the RPS15 (Redundant Power Supply).

The RPS is a modular design comprising a chassis and up to 3 x 600w modules. The unit supports 3rd party UPS solutions.

For PoE switches

• Supports up to 3 units per RPSU chassis • One RPS module per switch to achieve 802.3af compliance

For non PoE switches • Supports up to 12 units per RPSU chassis • Requires 4:1 power cable for efficient use of RPS 15

Exception: • ERS 5530, requires one RPS module per switch, just like

PoE switch (max 3 per chassis)

Wireless LAN Solutions

Avaya's WLAN portfolio delivers the freedom of mobility for today's business professionals. The broad portfolio includes the right solution for any application from reliable wireless voice and multimedia services to cost-effectvie indoor/outdoor coverage and point-to-point solutions. This flexibility gives enterprise customers limitless options for growing their WLAN deployment and affords wireless service providers a multitude of new revenue opportunities. The new standard in WLAN networking – 802.11n, ratified in September 2009 – is being seen as an industry inflection point due to its ability to provide wireless performance approximating to fast ethernet, ie. what the bulk of wired LAN users experience today. Device support is also advancing rapidly, and many employees now use devices with WLAN capability to do their work – laptops, smartphones etc. The result of these developments is fewer and fewer hard-wired devices in use in the Enterprise, or what Avaya refers to as the Unwired Enterprise. It is now estimated that more than 50% of network ports sit unused, prompting suggestions of an 18% CAGR in WLAN globally. Avaya recognises the potential of this rapidly growing market and so has invested in bringing its own 802.11n standards-based solution to the market, the WLAN 8100 Series. This family is based on the industry-leading Split Plane architecture which ensures efficient scaling and high performance, crucial for the wireless networks of the new decade. In addition, Avaya continues to maintain a working relationship with Trapeze Networks in support of its legacy installed-base using the WLAN 2300 Series.

1. As a wired access point using both radios to deliver simultaneous 802.11a/b/g service. Dual-Ethernet ports allows the access point to be dual-homed to the network added resiliency Internal or external antenna options are available.

2. As an unwired access point using one radio for 802.11a wireless backhaul, and the other to deliver 802.11b/g service for clients

3. A point-point, or point-multipoint wireless bridge to create instant broadband wireless links between buildings or other distant locations where network connectivity is required.

Local forwarding is a new feature that creates more efficient traffic flows by allowing the access point to forward data packets outside of the WSS tunnel. Previously, the only option was to tunnel traffic back to the WLAN Security Switch which can create a bottleneck under excessive loads. Forwarding can reduce latency and jitter by as much as 90% for improved voice quality.

Identity Engines The Avaya Identity Engines portfolio integrates with the network infrastructure to provide the central policy decision needed to enforce role-based network access control . These products offer an open, standards-based and holistic network identity management structure. The structure is accomplished by combining the best elements of a next-generation RADIUS/AAA server, the deep directory integration found in application identity offerings, and one of the industry's most advanced policy engines. All this is done out-of-band for maximum scalability and cost effectiveness. This centralized policy engine sits in the data center to provide authentication and authorization for wired, wireless, and VPN network devices. This is combined with a suite of complementary products that enable 802.1X rollouts, to help organizations achieve audit and compliance goals.

Secure Routers – Unified Branch

Avaya Secure Routers combine robust IP routing, flexible WAN connectivity, IP voice and security in a single cost-effective device. The Secure Router Portfolio adds to Avaya's existing solutions and enhances our ability to deliver end-to-end converged networks. Ideal for enterprise branch, remote or regional site environments, Avaya Secure Routers are optimized to deliver the low-latency, high packet throughput required by IP telephony and multimedia applications. Providing wire-speed performance even with advanced WAN services enabled, they are the right solution for enterprises requiring high-speed Internet or private WAN connectivity.

Delivering voice gateway capabilities in a flexible platform, the Converged Branch Routers in this portfolio (SR4134 and SR2330) are ideal for enterprise branch offices or remote sites. They can provide local branch connectivity to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) as well as SIP survivability in case of IP wide-area network failure or service outage. Optionally, they can be upgraded to provide advanced data and wide-area network (WAN) services and function as a full-featured integrated branch router.

The Advanced Gateway 2330 is interoperable with Avaya Aura™ and Avaya 9600 Series IP Desktop phones – as well as other Avaya and 3rd-party call servers and phones. With a rich suite of SIP gateway features, PSTN interface options, global signaling protocols, and resiliency support, it is an ideal branch solution for centralized UC deployments. It also can be upgraded to deliver a complete suite of data and WAN services, consolidating multiple branch devices and significantly reducing an enterprise’s total cost of ownership.
