In three different episodes we see how Lola’s life pans out in parallel worlds where the slightest difference in her interaction with the world creates a different outcome.

The premise is rather simple. Lola’s boyfriend Manni has accidentally left a bag containing a hundred thousand deutsche marks in the subway. He is supposed to deliver that to a mafia boss otherwise he will be killed. Manni calls Lola in despair; he only has 20 minutes before he is to be killed and asks her to come up with the money within that time. So she decides to rob her father and sets about running towards that job; hence the title.

The first run reveals that Lola asks her father for the money, but he refuses to help. The reason being his mistress is pregnant and that Lola was not his biological child. He plans to leave them and start a new family. Distraught Lola runs to Manni and helps him rob a bank only to be caught by the police and fatally shot in the chest.

The second run goes on to show that Lola trips and sprains her leg on the staircase and arrives at the banks later where her father’s mistress reveals that he isn’t the father. He still refuses to help and she robs the bank and runs to Manni. He hears her call and moves towards her, only to be hit by a car and it is shown that he is dying.

The third run consists of events that were unavoidable in the past two creating different outcomes for both the characters. Lola ends up missing her father at the bank and ends up playing at a casino for the money. Manni manages to retrieve his lost bag and they both meet outside the supermarket, and the movie ends by him asking her what is in her bag.

This is a fun movie to watch, filled with action and true to its German roots running on philosophical questions of the chaos theory and parallel universes. It mainly asks us, if we did things differently would our lives be the same or different. Are we destined to live

the life that was planned for us, or do we have the free will to break away from that and create a new outcome? It is an entertaining thought provoking movie that is enjoyable regardless of its philosophical bend.

5Tech

The idea of having a laptop/tablet may not compared to smartphones and smaller tablets. But in a fast paced tech hungry market, there’s something for everyone. There’s always a device that meets certain needs of a buyer. What makes this better than its predecessor? Straight off the bat, it’s the attention grabbing, ultra-high-resolution 13.3-inch display. Along with the 3200x1800 pixels, the Yoga 2 Pro is nearly next to the Retina MacBook Pro. This is a huge improvement as the original Yoga had only a 1,600x900-pixel display. It’s also a bit thinner and lighter, sitting at 15.5mm thick and falls just on the 3lb mark. Remember, these devices are able to flip, twist and fold into a tablet, so it’s nice to see improvement for the keyboard as well. The upgraded backlit keyboard, when it’s not hidden away, feels premium

to the touch like most ultrabooks out there. This is definitely a welcoming addition. More to the point, the Yoga 2 from Lenovo houses a 4th-gen Intel Core i7 ULT processor. An 8GB DDR3L RAM, integrated Intel HD Graphics, and comes with a 512 GB SSD storage. There’s also a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0

port, and a micro HDMI-out. Let’s not forget the 720p HD camera, which comes standard in the Yoga and Yoga 2 Pro. With the specs and the Windows 8.1 OS upgrade, the Yoga 2 can drive a battery life of up to 9 hours. Even with better specs than the original, the price is at a reasonable $1,099 (around Tk85,600).Poweramp is a music player for

Android with a host of playback options. With the option of hooking up your smartphones to surround sound speakers at house parties, the extra and detailed features in Poweramp will definitely play to your advantage.

Whether you’ve hooked your smartphone up to a larger speaker or listening to audio through headphones, you are able to adjust each setting to your liking. As expected, the user interface is clean and simple to use; it’s extremely beginner friendly. Each track is easily accessed and placed in categories that you would normally see in music players. A pretty cool feature to boast is it takes very long audio files, like radio shows or podcasts, and automatically breaks them down to individual tracks. Its equaliser and or audio effects really make a huge difference between an mp3 and flac file. Poweramp has a 10 band optimised graphical equaliser for all supported formats with separate bass and treble adjustments. Just so things don’t remain too bland, there are downloadable visual themes and skins. And for any tracks missing album art, the app will download it automatically. It also has lyrics support that is available through the musiXmatch plugin. It is highly customisable compared to the other music players in the market. There’s plenty of choices in home screen widgets and the ability to choose how your lock screen will look as well, while the app is in play. Each tweak you make in the sound settings can be heard clearly, as long as you have yourself a quality pair of headphones or speakers. Poweramp is a must try, even if you only go as far as downloading the trial version.

The Nissan Juke was one of the most exciting and highly-anticipated cars of 2010 and it’s easy to see why. With its outlandish looks and ultra-modern interior, it still looks very much like the concept car it was based on, particularly at the front with that distinctive blend of angular lines and large round headlights. The Juke not only looks great, it’s also comfortable inside, good to drive, and reasonably practicalMost people are likely to ask - what is it? Good question. It’s another “crossover,” a style that was successfully established by Nissan. Nissan describes the Juke as

a cross between a compact SUV and a sports car. It certainly stands out and is guaranteed to attract attention; if you want anonymity, then don’t choose the Juke. The Juke continues Nissan’s approach of doing things differently. This reflects on the inside with a sporty and unique interior that’s different from other Nissan models. It is available in only in 1.5Litre in-line four 109Hp variant that is capable of doing 11Km/L on average. As with the majority of crossovers, a 4WD is available. Features such as keyless entry, power mirrors, audio, and

alloy rims come as standard. Despite the Juke’s tall stance, it doesn’t lurch around uncomfortably through corners. The price for this comparatively sporty feel is a firm ride, although, it’s not uncomfortable. Only the limited grip lets the side down; try to get through a corner swiftly and the front end starts to drift wide quite early. The steering is vague, too.It might not be love at first sight, but a drive in the 2010 Nissan Juke will have you seeing the inner beauty of this feisty little crossover.

Saiful Quadar, the data processing director at a research firm seems to be a successful corporate guy and it comes as a pleasant surprise to discover that he is really into home decor and spends 40% of his income on it. He says that it is very important for every member of the household to be equally interested in making their home a heavenly abode. Since most people live in flats and there is always the question of shortage of space, he has opted for limited furniture leaving 30% of his flat empty. This allows better movement and helps avoiding the clingy feeling. Hygiene is more important to him than expensive furnishing items. He highlights how he makes sure that every member of his house keeps things in their proper places, to avoid giving the house a messy look. He personally looks into the cleaning process of the household despite his busy work schedule.

Pets

He is fascinated with furniture items though confesses that it is not always possible to buy them from the biggest brands around. Hence, he opts for a amalgamation between known brands such as Hatil, Otobi etc, and lesser

known yet good quality products from Vegas. He feels that one does not need to be an expert to create a comfortable retreat known as home. One just needs to be passionate about it. He notes how

maintaining a clean and beautiful home reflects upon his work in a positive manner. After dealing with various work related tensions returning to his home has a soothing effect upon him.

Bringing a dog into your family is a big decision that requires you to consider various factors. The “cost of ownership,” involves the monetary aspect as well as the physical adjustments you make to accommodate a dog in your family.

SIZE: Your heart might be set on a tiny lap dog while your kids might want one of those large, cuddly, giant breeds. If you finally decide to buy a lap dog you have to consider the fact that they are delicate and vulnerable. If they are not treated with proper care, you may un-

knowingly inflict serious injury on them. Moreover, as they are also sensitive to colder temperatures you will need to keep them warm at all times. Larger dogs, on the other hand, need a little more space to move around and are also expensive to maintain. Tip: The larger the dog, the harder it is to raise them.

EXTRA-CIRRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Every dog requires a certain amount of exercise. Before choosing a dog, the owner should consider the amount of

time he/she can dedicate to taking the dog for walks, jogging etc. Lack of phys-ical activities may make your pet more inclined towards expending his excess energy by turning your house into his private play pen.

PHYSICAL MAINTENANCE: If you chose a breed with hair that keeps growing, then advanced routine groom-ing is required. If your pet has short hair then be prepared to do some extra cleaning as they are usually major shed-ders. Dogs with long ears are prone to

ear infections and hence, require fre-quent ear cleaning sessions. AGE: Puppies require the most training and attention. If you don’t train them early, it is possible that they may grow up to be rowdy and difficult to handle. As for adult dogs, remember than it is much harder to train them since they have crossed the age where they are openly receptive to being taught new lessons. However, the plus side of get-ting an adult dog includes the fact that they are usually more social and very, very compassionate.

1) Independent women: Yes, you read it right. Men actually NEED women who can get around on the streets of Dhaka without making a dozen phone calls to the chauffeur. Imagine how happy your man would be if he didn’t have to send you the car from across the city if you could just cross the street and make it to the mall. A man wants a woman who can multitask, juggle their work and home lives and not get stressed out. A responsible working woman is a rare find and one that a man wouldn’t easily let go of.

2) Dress to impress: Heels, shiny ballet flats, make-up, and a new set of per-fectly matched clothes isn’t what men want all the time. But that doesn’t mean they don’t want their woman to spruce up for them. After the first six months of the relationship, women usually discard the makeup and let their crazy hair run

wild and free. Just because your man loves you, doesn’t mean you can go all corpse on him. Dress up and experi-ment with your hairdo or clothes and show him what a gorgeous lady he has bagged.

3) Witty conversation: A man really needs a woman who can take a joke. It’s a rare find to have a woman who won’t take offense over a derogatory joke. Women easily get offended and that means men have to filter most of their thoughts in order to come off as inof-fensive, polite, and in other words, bor-ing. Men want a woman who is worldly and can get themselves in an intelligent debate without getting overtly personal about it. So ladies, you need to smile at his jokes and take it easy. Trust me, that’s an instant way to spice up your conversa-tions and your relationship.

What men secretly wantWe all know what men REALLY want and label them as being one dimensional. However, the male brain does seek out the same things women fuss over. However, the male ego, the macho persona or the fact that he is after all a guy, doesn’t lead him to show his emotions as vividly. Dig deep because in a man’s eyes you will find the same innate need to connect on more than just a physical levelNatasha Rahman

That kind of comfort can be dangerous, though, because it’s so tempting to just let everything go and devolve into a big sloppy mess until one fine day, you realise that your love life has lost its lustre. Here’s how not to go down that route:

Maintaining the merchandise - Sure, you’re not actively playing the field any more, but that’s no excuse to drop the ball and get flabby. Your body is still your temple, so treat it right. Staying fit has many advantages on a relationship level too, because you have all the stamina to keep the fire going, if you know what we mean.Groom for improvement - There

comes a point where you’re cool with your significant other seeing you in a day old stubble, or between showers, or in sweats. When that point becomes the norm, you’ve driven right into the territory of Uh Oh. Think about it. You put a lot of effort into courting her, but now that you’ve got her you can play Homer Simpson? Hygiene is a big part of attraction, so if you want to keep the love fresh, stay fresh.

Something old, something new - The longer you’re together, the greater the tendency to settle down into established patterns. While ritual is comforting, a little variety is never a bad thing. Take some time to try new things together. Check

out the new restaurant everyone’s been raving about. Go see a play - especially if that’s not something you usually do. Change keeps things refreshing and exciting.

Treat your relationship as you would your prized car. Maintain it well, give it regular tune-ups, and it will take you wherever you need to go.

Guys, as all those sappy songs you pretend you don’t listen to will attest, it’s a wonderful feeling to love and be loved in return. There’s no bigger ego boost than knowing that someone you find attractive is thinking about you, misses you when you’re not around, and in general, gives a damn about the minutiae of your life. And it gets even better when you reach a level of comfort in a relationship where you don’t always have to bring your A-game Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

8 Talk

Food and a little more

Just within a week of your arrival, The Westin Dhaka organised an Indian Food Festival. And within a span of two months, we have the Arabian Food Festival being hosted. Can you tell us why these culturally diverse events are being hosted? At Westin, we have customers from various parts of the world. As such serving authentic food items from all over the world becomes ideal. The good thing about Bangladesh is that people here are ready to try new cuisines provided they are authentic and served well. Hosting these food festivals help us to reach a wider audience of food lovers who want to try something new. A lot of people have been to Middle East and hence Arabian cuisine is something which most of the guests are not unfamiliar with. They often tell us that they miss the authentic Arabian food, as such we thought of bringing in guest chefs from Egypt to fulfill this need of the guests.

A lot of people think that Arabian food consists mostly of shawarma and falafel. There is also a general idea that Arabian food is mostly very rich in terms of calories, that are not very healthy to consume. Is this a myth or a reality?I don’t think that it is less healthy than other foods. Obviously, it depends upon a person’s eating habit. It does not matter what you eat, if you eat it in excess then it is not going to be healthy for you. There is so much more to Arabian food than what people generally assume. This food festival will showcase a wide variety of dishes which the guests will be pleasantly surprised with.

Can you tell us a little about the guest chefs who will be presiding over the kitchen during the Arabian Food Festival? They are coming from one of our sister concerns, Sheraton Soma Bay Resort, Egypt. Located on the Red Sea, it is a very picturesque location away from all the political problems which Egypt especially Cairo is engulfed in now.

I have read that you have travelled to a lot of places all over the world. Can you tell us how this impacts your cooking style? Also can you give us a little insight on how the culinary school in Bangladesh is different from that in Switzerland?I started to learn cooking at the age of 17. Apprenticeship in my home country, Switzerland is different from that in Bangladesh. In Switzerland, during the apprenticeship period one has around four days of actual practical cooking and one day of theory based studies. In Bangladesh, in most culinary schools they have a semester of theory based studies followed by a semester of practical experience. In this sense, in Switzerland you have a system where theory and practical experience go more hand in hand. As far as my part in The Westin Dhaka goes, with my experience they expect a lot from me, to see changes, new concepts and it is a challenge for me but I think over the last 30 years I have seen a lot and I can take up this challenge and fulfill it well.

Which country’s cuisine is high in demand in The Westin Dhaka?Indian Cuisines are surely a favourite amid our guests.

The Arabian Food Festival starts from November 7 at The Westin Dhaka. Avenue T met up with the Executive Chef, Peter Anton Wicki who gave us insight into the event, the guest chefs and shared his idea about food in generalTausif Sanzum

Q: It seems hopeless, but how do I get to work without being drenched in sweat from riding my bike from home? Can I avoid putting my clothes in a bag then change once I get to the office?A: Unless there is a shower at your workplace, there is no need to level up and go Tour de France on the road. It’s as if you are trying out a new exercise for the first time, it’s not about speed but more importantly about form. There is no need to go crazy on the pedals, you want to be cruising. Just step out of the house a little earlier so you can take your time on your bike. Make sure to carry a small towel for the sweat and a water bottle small enough to fit in your bag to keep you hydrated.

Q: Is there a rule for matching a tie bar width with the tie’s width? I’ve seen different tie bars as short as half an inch to one and a half inches. Are the sizes intentional? A: Let’s get one thing clear. A tie bar is an accessory, just another excuse for a man to wear more jewellery. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to be a master of style to know that if the bar is wider than the tie, it will look awkward. You’ll be as far from suave as possible. It also depends on how high up you are wearing the tie bar or tie clip. Ideally, the placement of the tie bar should be under the sternum – below the chest muscles. This is where you determine if the tie bar is wider than the narrower part of the tie.

Style Session

Articles by Mahmood Hossain

This autumn/winter, the classic silhouette has been given a gold frame as well as cool grey, tinted lenses. It’s the perfect combination for the season’s fashion forward gentlemen who wish to pull off a chic and classy look. Whether you decide to cruise down the avenue or head off to a meeting, this is sure to turn a lot of heads. The beautiful thing about the aviators is, like The Wayfarer, it will never go out of style. You’ll see plenty

of square frames out there among the masses, but stick to these pairs and rest assured to stand out from the rest. We’re not endorsing Ray-Ban either, so don’t feel as if you have to buy these exact pairs. There are plenty of brands out there with their own versions of the aviator. Choose one that looks best on you. Not only are the aviators first in class, it comes with different lenses and frames in various

solid colours. And as amazing as the gold pairs may look on you, the classic black frames and lenses will do just fine. Remember though, like any other accessory, this may not be for you and thus there is no need to force things, gentlemen. In this column, it’s all about what’s hot and never mentioning what’s not. Though it goes without saying, you can’t go wrong with these shades in the danger zone, Maverick.

You’ve got your tie on straight with the dimple, your shoes strapped on tight, shirt tucked into your trousers but there’s one item missing. Or is there? One of the most quintessential accessory for a man is the belt. How much is there to know about a belt, right? You would be surprised to find the little details plenty of men never tend to notice. And with plenty of attention being paid to menswear spanning recent years, every detail counts

You may want to add a little flair at times with a casual look by adding a smooth canvas or a colourful woven cotton belt. And that’s fine, but you have to ask yourself if that is necessary. On the formal side, a tailored suit is exactly that, everything fits. This means your trousers feel snug and comfortable around your waist. Strapping on a belt can only be seen as adding extra flavour to your look. Whether you choose to wear a belt or not, there are particular details to keep in mind.Types of belts – You have your casuals and formals. Traditionally, if the belt is about as wide as your thumb, it’s a dress belt. If it’s significantly wider, consider it a casual. This is literally a rule of thumb. In most cases, you will see plenty of

wider belts in stores. As long as there isn’t a huge difference in the width of the belt and your thumb, you are safe to call it a formal belt. Aarong, for example, carry the traditional formal belts from time to time – the belts that are as wide as your thumb.Colours – When it comes to formal, you have your three basic colours. Black, brown, and tan is what you should always aim for. For the casual look, well, you can imagine the variety. Material – Calfskin, ostrich, and lizard are prominent choices of leather by leading labels around the world. Most commonly, the calfskin is what you will bump into at stores and other branded outlets.

Is it bad to wash hair everyday?

We all feel as though our hair is dirty and grimy when we live in particular Asian cities where the dust, pollution, and sweat we accumulate through exposure to the elements is something we want to remove at least once a day. While that is an understandable factor for washing our hair everyday, we should take into consideration our own individual hair types - no matter what climate we live in.

Oily hair is a problem we have and is quite common in fine hair but may also be present in thick hair.We can also have an oily scalp and dry ends.Oily scalp is caused by the sebaceous gland producing sebum - a natural oil which helps to keep our scalp healthy and shiny. Over-production of it can cause extremely visible oily scalp as can over brushing our hair. If you do have an oily scalp then washing everyday is acceptable. Look for shampoos

formulated with your scalp in mind, with ingredients such as tea tree, peppermint, basil, lemon or any other natural based ingredients which help to combat oil.

If you have dry, brittle or frizzy hair then it is advisable not to wash everyday as it may cause more dryness. You can use a moisturising, conditioning treatment or nourishing conditioner instead of washing every alternative day, in order to freshen and soften your hair.Protective leave-in conditioning sprays are also a great alternative.

She has extensive knowledge of trichology, the science of hair and scalps.

If you take a stroll through our favourite Dhaka College market, you can score tons of plaid shirts. The best thing is, they come in an array of different materials ranging from flannel to cotton, even chiffon button downs. Priced between Tk150-500, it doesn’t put a dent in your wallet and simultaneously, keeps your look up to speed.

Here are some easy ways to incorporate plaid into your wardrobe this fall:f Styling your favourite plaid shirt and jeans with a nice slouchy vest.

f Layering by wearing a tank top underneath and just for the extra oomph

factor, tying the bottom of the shirt into a nice little knot.

f Tucking your favorite plaid shirt into your jeans and accentuating your waist with a nice belt for a look that is very “Wild Wild West.”

f For those of you that wear hijabs, use a plaid printed scarf paired with a muted monochromatic outfit with cute little details.

f You can even find plaid saris these days. Just make sure not to overdo with the rest of the make-up/ jewellery when sporting such a bold print.

Don’t be afraid to go a little out of your comfort zone when it comes to fashion. You’d be surprised how awesome you can look

The feline flickThe perfect cat eye look is ever fashionable, very flattering for most eye shapes and delivers a sultry, mysterious look even when the rest of your makeup remains low key. When pressed for time this winged-out look can be the fastest way to look your best Tilat Khayer

Pro Tip:

You can use any colour pencil or gel eyeliner to achieve this look. The fatter the eyeliner, the easier it will be to use. With a pencil, just draw the shape you like and clean up the mistakes with a damp q-tip before going over the shape with liquid or gel eyeliner

STEP 1Look at yourself straight on in the mirror. Where your eyebrows end should be the direction your liner goes. Now tilt your chin upwards and look back down at the mirror with your eyes. This really does make the angle easier to see. Choose your liner and start at the outside corner of your eye. Draw a “flick” up toward the end of your eyebrow. It doesn’t have to be perfect.

STEP 2Repeat step 1 on the other eye. This is the time to make sure your “wings” are symmetrical with one another. For a dramatic winged look, draw farther out and angle the liner more.

STEP3Once you have the angle of your wing, create the winged effect at the outer corner of your eyes. Starting at the outer corner of the line you just drew, work back toward your eye, using a light sketching technique with the pen in short strokes. STEP 4As you get closer to the inner lash line, draw a thinner line. You want the effect of the liner to be thin to thick from the inner corner of the eye to the outer.

STEP 5Follow the natural shape of your eye and connect the liner to the inner corner of your eye. Fill in any missing spaces along the lash line. Repeat on your other eye and you have created winged cat eyes.

STEP 6 Finish off this sexy look with 2-3 coats of lengthening and thickening black mascara.

Women have done this extra flick of liner since the 50s and to this day, it still adds that extra dose of glamour to any look. It's surprisingly an easy look to do with any eyeliner: liquid, gel and felt tip eyeliners give a precise line and pencil and eye shadows give a softer line. The challenge, however, is to get the “wings” to look symmetrical without spending all day doing it. Here is the trick to achieving the perfect cat eye in 6 easy steps.

TOOLSl Pencil Eyeliner -Creating a cat-eye look with eyeliner requires practice. The most effective way to do this is with liquid black eyeliner, but it requires a steady hand, so beginners can start with the pencils.

l A felt-tip black liquid liner — For those with a relatively steady hand, I suggest a felt tip because it glides easier than an eye pencil and gives a lot more precision when applied in small strokes.

l Another favorite is the classic and never-failing, liquid ink-like eyeliners that can create very fine lines to thick ones for a more dramatic effect. This is suitable for the pros as they can be

tricky to use and mistakes are often messy to correct.

l My personal favourite is the Gel Liner that requires an angled brush to apply. They dry reasonably quickly but can also be moved or smudged.

l A pointed cotton swab —This is your best friend when you need to correct any mistakes.

As a 33 year old man who’s been divorced twice, I am very bitter about marriage and relationships. I’ve been meeting people, but somehow I don’t have the heart to break down the walls and really allow someone to get close to me. People are so judgmental these days, the idea of a man divorced once is blasphemous, let alone TWICE! I’ve been talking to a really lovely woman for the past three months. I’ve been thinking about telling her about my last divorce, but somehow I think it will not help our relationship, but just deteriorate it. How much honesty is necessary in a relationship?KH

Well, how can you hide a divorce? Oscar Wilde said something to this effect: Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience. You say: people are so judgmental, I wonder if you belong to those people too! We all belong to that club one time or another. What happened to your marriages? Were you judgmental of your spouse’s?

No, this is not an attack on you, I want you to see that perhaps you judge yourself and project out onto other people. Are you scared that you did not make the two marriages work? It takes two hands to clap, so some responsibility must go to the other half. I fear you judge yourself unfairly and make yourself totally responsible for the two divorces. Maybe you are, or maybe you just went for the type of woman who is not right for you and

you are not right for her. Often we are attracted to what we are allergic to.For example when we have hypersensitivity towards a particular food, often we crave it. I believe it can also happen at an emotional level, we crave the very type of person that isn’t compatible with our personality and spirit.

Letters to Venus

I’m a 25 year old woman in a relationship with my boyfriend for the past 10 years. In these 10 years I’ve never seen anyone else, or been in any other relationship. We spent several years apart as both him and I went to college in Malaysia and Canada. However, now that I am back in Bangladesh and almost on the brink of formalising our relationship in the form of a marriage, I feel this distance. He’s still abroad and I haven’t seen him in the past year and a half. Once he returns this December, we plan to get married. I somehow feel that this is just a relationship Im rushing into because of habit – I cannot and do not have the energy to restart. Once he’s back Im afraid we’ll both not be able to live happily since we have evolved into different people over the years. I even find other men more interesting than him. I cannot get over these doubts.

You need to hear your cold feet, they are talking to you, they want the best for you. I believe you are not the only one in the relationship who feels this way: a 10 years – on and off- relationship and a long distance one at that, is more about friendship, affection, and respect. As you said you have evolved, but so has he. He may just feel the same way.Talk to him and tell him you cannot go through it. Both of you talk to your parents and later on you can be friends, but for a while break off any interaction. If you do not do that, there is a chance that within a year or two you both will have affairs as you will fall in love with someone else. The relationship started in your teens – when you are not yet fully formed –such relationships ending in marriage, often don’t last or one or both spouses stray out of the need of not having had enough experiences in their love lives.Thank your cold feet and warmed them up by taking the right decision.

Part I: making way for a Yogi lifestyleYoga

Finding time for yoga in our schedule isn’t always easy and excuses sometimes prevent us from creating a regular yoga routine. I personally found the key was to not put any preset pressure on myself and go with my natural lifestyle flow in order to make yoga both enjoyable and beneficial, without it feeling like a burden. We should always look forward to yoga. Here are some surefire ways that helped me start off my personal practise Aurnonee Malsi

Set aside some yoga TIME: If you’re new to yoga, it may not be practical to practise yoga daily. Instead, first aim for one to two sessions a week and gradually increase your practice without it feeling like a hurdle. As we become more in tune with the philosophy behind yoga, daily practice can eventu-ally become part of who we are. As the yoga instructor Christina Brown says, “First, it becomes habit, then it becomes a lifestyle; then it becomes who you are.” There’s no point in rushing this natural realisation.

be KIND to yourself: If you feel that yoga is a competitive practice and push too hard, chances are you won’t enjoy it and may hurt yourself. Go slowly, especially in the beginning, and listen to your body. It knows what it can do. If it says “stop,” then stop. Choose routines that work for you (for now). Remember that a little work well done is always best. And giving just 10-15

minutes to yoga everyday does add up over a week. As time goes on, you’ll be able to do longer and more challenging routines.

be REGULAR, not rigorous: It’s by far better to practise a little on a regular basis than to push ourselves into long, strenuous routines on an irregular basis. It’s perfectly OKAY if you can’t do certain poses (for now). It’s better to do the ones you can and enjoy them. Mas-ter those before moving into the more difficult ones. Keep a positive mindset. There is no “can’t.” It may take some time to fully build-up to some poses, but you CAN do it. If not, simply do the ones you are more comfortable with instead. Always remember, that some simple yoga is always better and ben-eficial than none at all. Practice makes perfect (or at least helps).

The moment you step into The Glasshouse, the unexpected charm of the restaurant makes you immediately fall in love with the effortless glamour of the spaciously placed, upholstered chairs, the opulence of the decor, the large French windows overlooking the city, and of course: the romantic balcony side that compels you to bask in mild pleasure even before you’ve taken a look at their menus. Reminiscent of the old world glamour of French cafes, the balcony is bound with awnings and shaded with an extended overhead glass and wood paneled roof that whispers with the gentle flow of water. Clearly deserving special attention, the restaurant’s true character is found in the little details that bring it together- the live kitchen, the dim lighting, the twinkling glow of the city lights and the lush softness of the grass carpet that covers the open air dining section.

Once seated by eager-to-please waiters, we were presented with a neat looking menu that was limited to a handful of specially selected

dishes ranging from Deep Fried Calamari to Beef Stroganoff. We began with the Oriental Tender Beef salad that promised to be a gentle, simple mix of beef strips, chilly, capsicum, and fish sauce, among other ingredients. Did it meet its promise? A definite yes. While healthy eating families might enjoy the light flavours and the health kick to the salad, one must also remember that it only meets the assigned function of a salad – to give you the impression of a full stomach, while attempting to give your mind the idea that you aren’t hungry (which you shall be, given the serving size). As a strong believer of truly sating the appetite, rather than whetting it, we gorged on the nachos with beef to really begin working through their menu. And oh my, did it satisfy! The nachos were crisp, the meat sauce rich, and the sour cream had just the right amount of tangy kick. Add to that a remarkably generous serving and you have yourself an incredible dish. Priced at Tk700, the nachos really do live up to the fine-dining-on-a-budget standard they have set for themselves.

Perched above an inconspicuous location at Gulshan Avenue, at first glance, The Glasshouse Brasserie proves to be a pleasantly surprising restaurant discreetly tucked into the top floor of a buzzing shopping complex. Claiming to be somewhere in between being a mesh of both fine and casual dining , this boutique restaurant is aptly called The Glasshouse Brasserie. The fine line between “fine dining” and “casual dining” being drawn by their ability to offer quality meals at prices that are relatively sensitive to customer budgets. While The Glasshouse Brasserie should not be mistaken for being a franchise of its British namesake, it should be noted that the similarities end with the identical names N Anita AmreenPhotos: Istela Imam

The cream of tomato soup, on the other hand, had an entirely separate mission to tease our visual senses. Arriving steaming hot, looking oh-so-inviting, it both broke our heart and excited our senses to dip into its warm pleasure bowl. It was smooth, creamy, and beautifully infused with the singularly divine flavour of tomatoes. And of course, let’s not forget about the bold crunch of the croutons. Just when we thought it doesn’t get any better than that, in came the French onion soup, not as visually pleasing, but definitely a notch higher on the tasting scales. Priced at Tk299 and Tk479 respectively, they were quite reasonably priced for the quality they were offering.

Although the Lemon Garlic Whole Fish shyly peaks out of the meat-dominant menu, once it comes down to taste, there’s nothing quite as enchanting. The Thai flavours were coherent, with every sour tang and every hint of garlic beautifully pronounced, yet delicately instilled in every bite. Giving the whole fish dish competition was the T-bone steak. When they said 350grammes on the menu they forgot to add “350grammes of meat that has been given just the right amount of time and effort a true steak requires.” If and when you’re done staring at the bountiful serving of T-bone cozily set next to tempting pile of mash and grilled veg, give that knife a go, and allow that subtle resistance to give you a moment to marvel at its raw appeal. Juicy, yet tender and flavourful - it had managed to nail the basics of a steak.

From the few coolers they had on their menu, the mojito was a true winner. The pink lemonade and iced tea were fairly pleasing in comparison. While these drinks refreshed, it seemed the overt sweetness was reserved for the Glasshouse special mocktail, despite being easy on the eyes

Another interesting main dish was the BBQ style half chicken covered in a broodingly dark layer of smoky BBQ sauce. While the sweet quotient was overpowering on this dish, when eaten with the side of otherworldly mashed potatoes, it gave the dish quite a pleasant balance. The mash, in fact, was a silky smooth illustration of indulgence that the mind couldn’t help but wonder why it hadn’t forced its way to being a main dish itself, because it certainly deserved a place!

The only time the mash failed to pull a dish to remarkability was in the case of the Glasshouse Mixed Grill. Albeit a true work of art in terms of looks, the layering of single servings of prawn atop a mini bed of grilled beef and fish didn’t quite have that jaw-dropping effect its appearance had. The flavours were present, but never did they pull you to that state where you really just sat down there and marvelled at the beauty of the dish – something you expected after trying their nachos, the lemon garlic fish, and the T-bone steak.

Head Chef Richard Gomes and Polin S. Mahtab, general manager of The Glasshouse Brasserie

With all the mains priced within the Tk800 to Tk1,500 range, the rare combination of quality dishes available at budget-friendly rates in-stantly gives this restaurant a strong 4 out of 5 when put to the tasting test. Add to that another .5 for the uncharacteristic freshness of their Mojito and the rich chocolaty good-ness of the Peanut Buster, and there you have it – a strong and proud 4.5 out of 5.

Tips & Tricks

De-wrinkling your wardrobeDon’t you just hate the endless lines and wrinkles that crease your freshly pressed shirt, dress pants the moment you sit down? Those stubborn creases promise to leave you feeling mighty uncomfortable whether it’s at work or at that special date you’ve spent so long readying yourself for. Here are few tips and tricks to de-wrinkle your life, lessen the amount of time you need to spend on the ironing board, and help you achieve that creaseless perfection Natasha Rahman

My favourite appetisers at restaurants are usually chicken wings. Sometimes you just want food that’s messy to eat and so good that you lick your fingers and the warm and gooey sauce on chicken wings does that trick. There are various flavours you can make chicken wings in, and you can bake them, or deep-fry them. Today’s recipe is taking the slightly healthier route by being baked, but it has all the goodness of being drenched in a sweet and savoury sauce. To make the wings tastier, they should be marinated in the flavours overnightFareeha Chowdhury

The magic is in the dryingWhether you hand wash or use a washing machine, the magic to wrinkle free clothes lie in the manner in which you dry it. If you’re hand washing a piece of cloth, do not wring it, instead flatten it out and wash it. On the other hand, if you’re using a washing machine make sure you take out the

clothes before the dryers last spin is set in. This is the stage where most of the wrinkles set in. Instantly smoothen out any creases and hang your clothes while they’re still warm.

PreventionWhether it’s a kameez or dress pants, the second secret to de-wrinkling

your outfit is to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place. Instead of pulling your pants up before sitting, smoothen your pants in a downward motion and then sit. As for women who are donning stubborn cotton kameezes, smoothen out the back of your kamiz before sitting.

The desperados last resortIf you’re travelling and want to cut ironing costs, you may choose this last minute resort. Take the piece of clothing you’d like to iron and give it a shot of the shower, making sure it’s not more than three seconds. Instantly hang it on a plastic hanger and wait for it to dry out without creases.

It has seen everything from the Prussian Empire, World Wars I and II and the Cold War. As a tourist you’ll be spoiled for options. If there is one city you visit in Europe, Berlin is the best place to start

Sachsenhausen Concentration CampOne hour away from Berlin, in a small town called Oranienburg is one of the first Nazi concentration camps. Originally built to house political prisoners, Sachsenhausen evolved to a full blown concentration camp in the middle of World War II. This is a full day trip with many museums and well maintained bunkers, a must see for people of every age and faith. It is a painful reminder of Germany’s dark past fully preserved for future generations to understand the real ramifications of fascism.
