Saving Mr BanksThis historical drama features Tom Hanks as one of the most iconic figures in cinematic history, Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as PL Travers, the author of Mary Poppins series. The story revolves around how Walt Disney convinced Travers to allow him to adapt the series into a motion picture. With all the critical acclaim coming its way. this is definitely a movie to watch.

For most people, the holidays are over. This means no more leftovers, it is back to business. It’s back to getting your butt in shape. The Nike Training Club app is the perfect agent to get you going. Yes, it’s exactly what you are assuming. An app that delivers workouts for your entire body. Even though this is directed towards women, some men have admitted to using it as well. Some exercises are open to both sexes so this has garnered plenty of attention from men. There have been countless requests for Nike to devise an app for men. Right from the start, the app gives you four different levels of workouts.

•Get Lean – high interval cardio drills to slim down•Get Toned – light weights and intervals to add definition•Get Strong – increased weights and reps to build strength•Get Focused – 15-minute workouts to target specific areasAfter you have chosen a specific goal you are given the choice of level.

•Beginner – you average 4-5 workouts a month•Intermediate – you average 2-3 workouts a week•Advanced – you average 3-5 workouts a week Steps don’t come easier than this. Once you’ve chosen the level, you are given a list of workouts. Each circuit takes a certain amount of time to complete. In the process, the app also allows you to add your own music while you work out. Nike has taken a step further. If you feel you need an extra push, the app has a woman’s voice following each step. She’ll keep you on track letting you know how much time remains or when to switch positions. It’s kind of like having your own personal trainer assisting you along the way. Some of you may know about the Insanity Workout. Well, this is sort of like a free version of it for both Android and Apple devices.

Lasting lifeIt’s something all of us smartphone owners yearn for. A longer lasting battery is always a priority, we expect to do more with our smartphones without having to charge it so often. The good news is we are seeing more of 3,000mAh devices. It’s become the new trend. And why shouldn’t it? Smartphones have gotten bigger (think Sony Xperia Ultra) so it’s only natural to squeeze in more battery power. Here’s to hoping it lasts a full day. Is that too much to ask for?

The look and feelSo many sexy curves, it’s dangerous. As

mentioned before, Samsung and LG have led the way with curved displays. We’ve already been given the hypnotising effect of gorgeous displays from the leading smartphones. Now, it’s become a new way of viewing. If the other brands jump on the curved bandwagon, it can only mean better experience overall. The premium materials will follow suit. LG’s Flex has a unique irremovable battery to sit in perfectly along with the curves of the phone. Expect companies to invest more into screen protection, rejuvenating back cases, and harder water resistant shells.

2013 Mercedes-Benz C180

The end of 2013 gave us a preview of what’s to come in the New Year for smartphones. We can only assume so many things. However, we’ve picked up a few signs of what is to be expected from the leading brands. Apple shocked many by introducing the first 64-bit handset in the last quarter. We also saw the first OLED curved phones from Samsung and LG. Apple maybe a little tough to crack with their super secretive process of operating, but we can surely peak through the Android windows.

Chip off the old blockIt won’t be too surprising to see Android playing catch up with the new 64-bit chips for their handsets. At first, the Qualcomm bosses dismissed the whole idea of the new 64-bit processor. Soon after, it released its Snapdragon 410

Sharing the same platform of its bigger sibling, the E-class, the W204 series C180 was developed by the German automotive house, Daimler AG in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. Similarities from past generations include nothing, whatsoever. The C180 has been completely redesigned with crisp lines flowing from the front to the rear. Both the front and the rear bumpers are sculpted into a shallow V-shape, giving plenty of definition and dynamism to each end. The aluminium

bonnet features subtle bends that draw the eye to the enlarged grille, making it undeniably attractive and unique. The exterior is matched by the cabin, with a clean, logical and elegant layout. Quality is superb, thanks to the textured surfaces, trimmings and materials. Plunk yourself down on any of the seats and revel in the comfort they afford. The new range of four-cylinder petrol engines are top class, as the C180’s new power plant produces a hefty

156 horsepower from only 1.6 litres of displacement. Step on the throttle and the C180 responds, pushing the car from a standstill to 100km/h in just 8.5 seconds. Furthermore, the engineers at Mercedes have refined the automatic gearbox and it gets the 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed box which has been tuned precisely to improve fuel efficiency. Then there’s the suspension, featuring direct control automatic selection, which means the C180 will soften up for poor road conditions or attune itself when entering a rugged terrain, and the best bit is, it all works brilliantly. The new BMW 3-Series or the Audi A5 may be just around the corner, but with all these and more in the Mercedes-Benz C180, it’s very clear that the gold standard is back with a bang.Available at Rancon Motors, 215 Tejgaon-Gulshan link road, Dhaka.

How to stay warm this winter Esha Aurora

Combatingthe cold wave

We hear that elections will proceed regardless of the pandemonium that has broken out. 5 January beckons all standing citizens to get up and vote for the government of their choice (what choice?) We also hear that even if you don’t get off that couch and exercise your democratic right, someone else will do it for you, in your name in several different areas. Now you might ask what is the point. Well here it is.Point is; Pandora’s box is open. All the ghosts and ghouls are out. They’re coming from the farthest corners of the country, armoured with their strange convictions of the world and blindly following any banshee who calls. This is important. If you don’t want to hand over the deciding factor of any election to a band of bigots, go to a voting booth and voice your opinion. That is the only place where your government gives a damn.

Most of us are tired. Tired of the bickering, banal accusations and incessant violence that’s become the modus operandi of Bangladesh. Gosh! We had such hopes, such dreams for this land. You as a singular person cannot do anything and it’s the most helpless feeling in the world. The only time you’re of any relevance is when your name can be used in voting booths across the country to garner a majority. No international government has consented to the free or fairness of this election. Yet we stubbornly trudge on.

Whether or not you decide to venture out on the 5th, remember that this very right was won for you in blood. This very simple act of ticking a box on a paper is the maker of kings or in our case queens. You may not like your options, but then you may have to work hard, real hard to

change the status quo. That right will not be handed to you willingly. While the rest of us wait patiently for our own version of Ghandhi, the country veers very close to the brink of self-induced

Every year winter brings a welcomed respite from the heat. But then winter turns into an ugly grey beast, breathing down record low temperatures that tropic dwellers like us are completely unaccustomed to. Here is a cheat sheet on how to stay warm and cozy this winter without feeling like the tin man.

Invest in thermal wear: Thermal clothing is God send! They’re lightweight, breathable and most importantly they alleviate the need to layer on several tee shirts under your sweater. What you’ll need is a few thermal tee shirts and a

few leggings. This is more than enough to last you the winter and because they’re thin, they don’t appear bulking under your clothes.

Get an overcoat: Contrary to popular belief, we do need a good overcoat in Bangladesh these days. It does get that cold. Instead of wearing a big fat sweater that is most likely going to get dirty very soon, get an overcoat. They look good and they can keep your legs warm too. They come in several different lengths so you have a plenty of choices when it comes to finding the right one. For maximum warmth check the label and invest in one that has the highest percentage of wool.

Closed toe shoes: This one gets tricky. Most closed toe shoes constitute of being either sneakers or unflattering boots. Options in this department have usually been limited, but now there are a lot of good leather shoe stores who stock an impressive array of flat to heeled boots. The reason why you should wear closed toe shoes in winter is because your foot

balances your temperature. Cold feet will make you freeze regardless of all the layers you piled on up top.

You can buy almost all of the above with a quick trip down to Nurjahan market or Bongo bazaar. For the shoes, try Apex or Elephant Road. You can also try looking at Astorian, Artisan or Spark Gear for thermals and overcoats. These places offer many great styles and colours to choose from! Have fun shopping and keep warm!

You’ve done your homework, now for the rules of engagement. You’re well-groomed, dressed classy, and walking towards her with a winning smile.

1. We pick up where we left off. This time, it’s about your body language. Always remember, confidence is key. Posture is important. There’s a very thin line between confidence and arrogance. Chest out, chin up means your back needs to be straight. It doesn’t mean strut around like Popeye. No slouching, don’t be lazy.

2. Women absolutely love attention. Love - they thrive on it so it’s important to make women feel they are the centre of attention. That means catching a glimpse of the hottie in the red dress at the next table is a “no-no.” Don’t you dare try to be sly, she’ll catch you in the act. Unless, she welcomes that sort of thing. Then, consider yourself lucky.

3. Compliments. This part can be a bit tricky. You want to subtly drop hints of interest by pointing out her highlights. Nonchalance is the way to go. It’s unnecessary to compliment her eyes

with a Shakespearean sonnet. “You have really beautiful eyes,” will suffice. In other words, complicating a simple gesture will only make you look desperate. You will keep the conversation going by speaking less and listening more. Make sure the compliments are spread throughout the conversation. If you lay it on thick, you won’t seem genuine.

4. Lay on that charm. Being pleasant to her and others around you will score you big points. If people tend to gravitate towards you, she’ll notice. She’ll see how well you get along with others, with your sense of humour and all. Consider this a turn-on for a woman. Delightful is the word, that’s what you want to aim for. She needs to see that you are easy to talk to. The more comfortable she is with you, the more she’ll open up.

As the conversation goes on, she’ll welcome a little naughtiness. Now that, gentlemen, is a very good sign. Also, try to play off everything she says first and work from there. Good luck!

The art of flirting (part II)

All in the familyThis is the season of weddings, so this one is for all our readers who recently tied the knot Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

Once your eyes have recovered from the flash of the photographers during your main event, realisation dawns. You’re married. Maybe the rock on wifey’s finger is the culmination of a pre-existing love story, maybe it is the start of a brand new one. While you’re in for the ride of a lifetime, there’s nothing like a big Bangladeshi wedding to remind you of the fact that along with a shiny new missus, you’ve acquired her family, and the tree might have more than its share of nuts. While every family is unique, here are a few quick pointers on how to deal with some of the most, ahem, “colourful” characters.

The prisoner’s dilemmaWhat’s the first thing the cops do when they catch a pair of criminals? If you’ve watched enough crime shows, you’ll know that they split the crew and interrogate each member individually, trying to ferret out incriminating evidence. And what do interrogators find most frustrating? Cons that refuse to snitch on their comrades. Just so, have

an “official” story ready and rehearsed by both your immediate circles, and keep that on repeat sans additions and embellishments, so that eventually any nosy parker will throw in the towel and let you be.

Grin and bear itThe most likely scenario is that the most irritating in-laws are the ones least likely to be a frequent flyer at your future events, so paste a gracious grin on your face and smile and nod at their annoying comments; tell yourself that it’s just a few days, and then they’ll be gone.

Disarm with charmSome people have nothing better to do than to criticise. Don’t let them bait you into engaging with them. Return every backhanded compliment with an extra-sweet one, every jibe with a word of praise. Drown the naysayers in sugar and they’ll soon leave you alone.

Call in the cavalryIdentify which member of your wife’s

family is likely to be most effective as a champion, and win that person over. Set that person to work, keeping the creeps at bay. That way, your reputation as the “lokkhi jamai” remains intact, and you remain protected.

A lot of us are influenced by the cult TV series, Friends. Hence, when the owners of this newly established food joint who happen to be avid fans of the sitcom, wanted to set up a cafe, the name Central Perk seemed to be an obvious choice for them. The basic motto of this cafe is to provide quality food and superior service at a reasonable price. Located in a prime spot, it caters to a wide range of customers particularly students from nearby universities.

Kudos to the owners for making sure that the decor of the place is modern and elegant. On one section of the interior sits a replica of the famous couch and the bookshelf from Friends. The furnishings are varied, with each section of the cafe having a unique set up. Thanks to their clever decor ideas, the place is not stuffy. There are board games which the customers can borrow and play and the free Wi-Fi connection is an added incentive.

The red velvet cupcake is priced at Tk190 but it is worth the money. The mocktails range between Tk160-Tk290 but you can have better ones elsewhere. The carbon pasta costs Tk390 and is a great value for money. With the rubbery bread, the chicken roll that costs Tk170, seems a bit over-priced. Tk280 seems to be a meagre amount to be paid for the chicken cashew nut salad that surpassed my expectations.

Central Perk cafe succeeds in terms of its decor and cozy ambience. However, as far as quality and taste is concerned, Central Perk has a long way to go. It’s comparatively new and we can expect something promising in the near future as the team behind the cafe is highly passionate. Thanks to the saving grace (their decor,) and the partially satisfying meal, we give Central Perk a 2.5 out of 5 on the rating scale.

The menu is varied consisting of a wide range of appetisers, salads, soup, pastas, rolls, sandwiches and mocktails. Albeit, it’s an uninspiring menu as none of the dishes stand out and they are available in most other cafes in town. The chicken roll has a yummy filling but is overshadowed by the bread which is outright rubbery. The chicken cashew nut salad is delicious but the chicken strips are too crunchy. The carbon pasta however, is mouthwatering. The red velvet cupcakes are moist and fresh providing an interesting climax to an otherwise ordinary meal. The drinks have catchy names such as NY Classico and Blue Moon but they are quite similar in taste.

Cleanliness starts from the fingertips

A tuxedo has always been the last level of sophistication

Gentlemen, you should know that a woman will always notice and judge your hands and fingernails. After the “shoe test,” how well you take care of your nails is a close runner-up. This may not be a make or break for most women but rest assured, it makes a significant difference.

Here are a few tips to keep things in check:1. For the love of all that is good, stop biting your nails. Not only is it a disgusting habit, you can seriously hurt someone, Edward Scissorhands! It’s terribly uncomfortable when you shake hands because you might end up scratching someone. The last thing you want is a woman’s stomach churning. It’s like when a person runs their nails down a chalkboard. Yes, that frightening! 2. The quick clip and file fix is always a good thing. The rule is, your nails should never extend past your fingers.

Nail clippers (not cutters) are easy to carry around because of their small size so there shouldn’t be any excuses. They are small for a reason, as you can attempt to clip along the natural curves of your fingers.

3. Scrubbing your nails would be the next step. Dip and soak your hands into a bowl of warm water for a couple of minutes. Then, take a nail brush and start scrubbing the tips of your nails in the water to remove dirt. If you don’t have a nail brush, ask one of the many lovely women in your life.

4. Moisturising is vital, especially now that it’s winter. When you reach for your body lotion, your fingers and hands are no exception. You want to prevent cracks and avoid calluses. 5. The best nail maintenance comes from getting manicures. There is nothing wrong or emasculating about

getting manicures. There’s plenty of testosterone-filled barber shops or salons for you to feel comfortable in. If your favourite athletes get their nails professionally taken care of, why can’t you?

Decades have gone by and the tuxedo remains as the final say for a man’s wardrobe. No matter the colour or style, the dinner jacket has been the focal point in the classy outfit. Most men in Bangladesh avoid the all black and white look in fear of looking like a waiter. No need to fold this hand, now you’ll have what it takes to raise the stakes. We’re going to take a quick trip around the few different ways to sport the dinner jacket.

Dress it downRemember it is 2013, correction, 2014. We live in an age where men have much more flexibility. This means a dinner jacket can be dressed down. What’s going to blow your mind is that a tux jacket can be worn with high-end track pants (sweat pants). You still have your bow tie and tux-appropriate white dress shirt. In addition, you can slip into those designer sneakers. Yes,

sneakers. Like a rock starThe rebel in you makes it into the classic all black affair. Keeping your dinner jacket on, lose the tie, and put on a pair of slim-fit jeans. Add some suede shoes and a casually worn scarf, this will definitely have the ladies turning heads.

Forever vintageNothing beats the classic tux look. Black bow tie or neck tie, solid cufflinks and the polished patent leather lace-ups are all it takes to look your best at a formal event. The biggest difference between your dinner jacket and a waiter’s are the lapels. You’ve got your peak, shawl and notch lapels. Black isn’t always the only choice. There’s cream, midnight blue, bottle green, burgundy, which all come in silk, velvet or wool. A nice evening jacket can be found in stores like Yellow for just under Tk4,000.

Nailing it

What’s for dinner?

Q: Like many people, I tend to gain a bit of weight after the holidays. How do I fit into certain clothes without having to buy new ones under a different size?

A: The holidays are always a joyful period of time. You’ve got the gift giving, the endless invitations, and the truck load of food finding itself into your belly. Let’s clear something first. There is nothing wrong with hitting up weddings and stuffing your face with delicious food. The consequences afterward though, is a whole different story. A great way to hide the extra weight is by opting for more casual trousers that go well with jackets. Whether it’s a leather jacket or suit jacket, you want to aim for dressed up trousers or jeans. The jacket will hide what’s up top, if you make sure to never button your suit jacket. The same goes for other jackets, stay away from buttoning or zipping up. Last but not least, get your butt back to the gym.

Q: I’ve never owned a proper wristwatch. I want one that I can use at the office and one that’s good for the weekend. Should I buy only one or several?

A: It’s a new year and time keeps ticking. Investing in a wristwatch is crucial. First, you have to think about practicality. It tells time, don’t go assuming you need a chronograph watch. Keep it simple; one with an hour hand, a minute hand and the second hand will suffice. Now, formal wear stands in front of the line. Look for a quality watch that will look great with more classy outfits. You have to start slow. Buy one, then make your way into investing in more watches. It’s all up to you. However, never make the mistake of buying a flashy watch for the sake of it. Gold and diamonds won’t buy you sophistication.

Fitting is the upmost important priority when it comes to evening wear. There is no excuse for you to get the measurements wrong.

Q. I want to get blonde highlights, but it seems like most women have streaks that look more on the orange side. How can I avoid my strands from turning orange?

A. Donning blonde highlights can be tricky on dark Asian hair. It is not impossible, but difficult to achieve, time consuming and a little damaging to the hair. The first step is to examine the hair to figure out if it was previously treated with henna or dye. Any tone of auburn or burgundy left in the hair will make the

blonde highlights a bit brassy. You may need to apply the colour twice to strip out the red pigments from the hair. A surefire way to get the best results with blonde highlights is to try it on “virgin” hair; hair that has never been coloured before.

Q. I have naturally wavy hair. I’ve heard some women apply curling creams and let their hair air-dry. However, whenever I try this, my hair appears to have a crunchy texture. How can I style my hair without using

a blow-dryer?

A. Curl creams work best on curly hair. You won’t get the same result using that particular product on wavy hair. What you can try is using a diffuser to partly dry your hair. A diffuser is an attachable head that you stick to a hairdryer and gently dry your hair. Do not comb it afterwards. You can apply a little bit of hair mousse for staying power before you leave it out to air-dry.

Beauty sessionQ. Do I really need to buy a concealer if I already have foundation? What exactly does a concealer do?

A. The name says it all. Concealer is a make-up product used to hide imperfections and dark circles under the eyes. If your skin doesn’t need major coverage, you can get away with just wearing foundation. If you need a bit of help with dark shadows or minimising

flaws, invest in a concealer a shade lighter than your skin tone. Make sure you don’t go any lighter to avoid looking like a reverse raccoon. Concealers also act as a base for eye make-up as it helps keep colours in place. Apply this product with clean fingertips or a small foundation brush where necessary. Blend well and dust off loose, translucent powder with a brush.

Waxing is a great hair-removal option as it not only removes hair for up to four weeks, but also leaves your skin healthy, smooth and silky. Over time, waxing also makes your hair grow back finer and sparser - so the more frequently it’s done, the less painful and easier it gets to endure the discomfort. It is also a lot cheaper than laser hair removal treatments, lasts much longer than shaving and can easily be performed at home. Smooth wax strips down firmly in the direction of the hair growth, and rub in that direction so the wax attaches properly to the hair. Pull strip quickly in the opposite direction of the hair, not upward as this will only cause you pain instead of removing hair from its root.

A word of caution, though - unskillful waxing can result in bruising or torn skin, which is not only painful but does not look too appealing either. To avoid the horrific results of clumsy waxing, read my at-home-waxing-tips listed below:

confidence boost and waxing at home will give you hair-free legs without the salon price tag. Remember, it won’t be quite as easy as the beauticians make it look, but after a few attempts, you’ll be waxing your legs like a pro. Heated wax or heavy-duty wax strips will work best here.

Furry armsIf you want your arms to stay hair-free for longer, you’ll need to wax them. The easy access to this particular part of the body makes it less complicated to wax at home. Try waxing in small patches, working from your wrist up. Keep in mind, you’ll have to put up with a one-to-two-weeks awkward grow-out stage in between treatments since hair must be at least a quarter inch long for the wax to stick.

Facial hairThere are a variety of home waxing products available to remove facial hair, but you will have to grow them out a few millimetres long before you use these. Facial wax strips are usually the easiest option for removing hair on such a delicate area. All you need to do is lather

it on and pull it off.

General rules to remember• Make sure your hair is tied back.• Use a big mirror, so you can see

what you’re doing.• Be gentle! It is one of the most

delicate areas of your body!• A word of caution if you are going

DIY, don’t try this technique if you are on any acne medications as that can change the texture of your skin and make waxing very painful.

When to leave waxing to the expertsThough waxing at home will save you time and money, there are some areas that are either too time intensive or downright dangerous to do it yourself! These are some of the areas that are best left to the pros:

EyebrowsWaxing your eyebrows is very different from plucking them. As there are several things that need to be taken into account, such as your face shape, brow shape and eyebrow thickness; so it’s best you either stick with the tweezers or make a visit to the salon every four

weeks.

UnderarmsThis area is tricky to do yourself; actually, it can even be tricky for trained beauty therapists. If pressed for time, just grab the razor to de-fluff.

Any level of Brazilian waxingThis kind of waxing is not as safe as a DIY wax and can go very, very wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing; definitely see the experts if you want it done.

General tips to take into consideration• Make sure your skin is absolutely

clean before applying wax.• Don’t moisturise beforehand, as

this will reduce the effectiveness of the wax.

• Never wax at ‘that time of the month’; your skin is far more receptive to the pain.

• Apply a thin layer of wax; thick is too hard to remove.

• Always do a small allergy test 48 hours before waxing.

Unwanted body hair is something we all battle with, so finding an easy and effective way to remove unwanted hair is a relief

Though it is known for its traditional clothing line, it has a superb T-shirt collection. True to its name, these T-shirts come in various colours and promote the Bangladeshi culture. On the eve of their 20th anniversary, they introduced a new line of T-shirts bearing the slogan “Glad to be Bangladeshi”. Though Dhaka Tribune coined this catchphrase, Rang felt that it should be our national slogan, which is why they picked it. Three years ago, my wife died while giving birth to our beautiful daughter and I have not been able to get over her or her death. Frankly, I don’t want to get over her anyway but my family has been pushing me to get remarried for the sake of my child. I love my wife dearly and I do not think I have the ability to love another woman again but I also love my daughter and want what is best for her. Please tell me what to do.

You are right to resist the advice of people who mean well but it is your life. As long as your child is well-looked after and you

spend enough time being and playing with her, that is what really matters. It would not be fair to the lady you may marry; she wants to be loved by you as “your wife,” not just as a person who can be a suitable replacement for your child’s mother. You will find, in your own good time, someone you can share your life with. I believe that people who passed away, would want us to be happy here, so allow yourself to be free. You loved your wife when she was with you, the love will never die, it will just transform and will leave space for you to love again.

Letters to Mars

Loving again

I have been in a relationship for 11 years with a man who I have grown to adore and love very much. However, sometimes I feel it is out of obligation and the years that we’ve invested into this are holding the relationship together. I often wonder what it would be like to have another man in my life, to see what the world is really about. I just feel so constricted in this relationship. By limiting my life to this one man, I feel like I have missed out on the opportunity to grow as a person. There is an unsettling sense of unhappiness that I can’t quite put a finger on. I can’t break it off with him, neither can I cheat on him just for the sake of it. I’m not sure about anything anymore but I do know that this is not where I want to be in life – unable to move from my position of seemingly happy girlfriend of 11 years. Is this just a phase in my life or is there something wrong in our relationship?

Why on earth are you not married yet? Doesn’t it tell you something about you both? I think this relationship for the both of you has run its course and neither of you are prepared to move forward with it. You both know you want different things in life but are afraid of the uncertainties. We are creatures of habits, so when fear entangles with habit, people become indecisive. Of course you have a great deal of affection for him, but you have grown out of this relationship, both of you need a chance to meet someone else. Take the plunge, give him and yourself a chance for a new life; cherish the time you had together. You have grown together but now you are both ready to take a flight!

Teen drama

My teenage daughter recently started high school and has been treating everyone at home with disrespect. She is cocky, uses foul language and never takes anything my husband or I say to her seriously. When we try to talk to her about her behaviour, she rolls her eyes and acts uninterested. I’m watching my daughter lose her innocence and it’s scaring me.

This is a pretty normal phase for a teenager. She is no longer a child and is pushing the boundaries to see what she can get away with. She is asserting her individuality and independence. Don’t be intimidated by her, but neither should you try to exert too much control over her. At this confusing and conflicted phase in her life, offer discipline and guidelines but give her the space to discover who she is. She will mature out of this stage into adulthood soon enough.

to the knees. Your shoulders, elbows and wrists should be aligned in one straight line. Knees on the floor, raise your calves up. Now start from the right side, bend down with your elbows and move to the centre, then to your left and back up. Reverse the move on the other side, starting from the left. Keep alternating the moves each time and do this for one minute. Bend lower each time you press yourself down. This works on your entire chest area, increases the blood circulation around the breasts and boosts up your chest to a sensuously-toned curve.

1515Take Care

All of a sudden your heartbeat races, your breath becomes shallow and anxiety takes over both your physical and mental faculties. For some, this is triggered by minor issues like a meeting with the boss, while for others this is an ongoing issue that comes alive almost all the time. While anxiety is a common phenomenon in everyday society, it needs to be carefully addressed to ensure that it doesn’t take a toll on your ability to work efficiently. The following are a few natural remedies to curtail anxiety. You can try one or more to find a combination that suits your lifestyle.

Control your thoughtsStress almost always stems from negative or fearful thoughts. A quick way to control your thoughts is to simply say “stop” every time you feel that you are obsessing over a negative thought. Keep in mind that you have to halt your train of thoughts whichever way is convenient for you.

Burn it outWhen you engage in workouts, be it a brisk walk or a yoga session, you release happy hormones called endorphins. The release of stored up energy helps you feel calm while also boosting your self-esteem. Listen to musicSeveral studies have revealed that relaxing music helps calm the body and the mind. In an intensely stressful time, take a few deep breathes and disengage from your thoughts by listening to music that you find calming. You may also try therapeutic CDs of binaural beats.

Engage in a recreational project/gameWhether it’s a game of solitaire or an arts and crafts project, anything that shifts your focus from your thoughts to something else helps reduce stress. Indulge in activities that you find joy in, be it gardening or painting.

Beat the evils of stress using natural remedies that calm the nerves, and leave you feeling rejuvenated without the use of drugs N Anita Amreen

Here’s Avenue T’s remedy to get that oomphy lift with these insta-perk-me-up moves! The elbows lock chest pressPlace your elbows together and your palms clasped to one another. Raise your hands slightly above your chest. This is the starting position. Now lift your hands up in three pulses. And bring it down to starting position. Level your clasped palms with your chin, that’s where the pulse starts; then move

on to your lips and then stop right in front of your forehead. Three pulses counts as one. Do a set of 20 if you are a beginner. For the advanced go till 40. Your elbows must be locked and pressing against each other the whole time. You should not, at any stage of the workout, unlock them. This workout will attack the pecs right under your breasts and give it that little pump it needs.

Recipe

16 Tantalise

Mixed vegetable curryWinter brings with it the varieties of vegetables that we often don’t have the chance to enjoy. The cold winter months give us ample time to gorge on an array of veggie delights. The following recipe may seem simple but it is anything but insipid. Using a whole range of vegetables such as cauliflowers, carrots, baby potatoes and turnips, this is one vegetable curry that’ll leave you licking your fingertips in satisfaction.

florets• 1cup carrots, medium diced • ½ cup new baby potatoes,

medium diced• 1cup eggplant, medium diced• 1cup snake beans, cut lengthwise

Method of preparationStep 1: Making the curry sauceHeat a thick-bottomed saucepan with oil at medium heat.Add the sliced onions to the pan and fry until translucent for 5 minutes. Add bay leaves, cardamoms and cinnamon and fry for 2 more minutes. Add chopped tomatoes to it and constantly stir for another 5 minutes. Pour 2 cups of water into the pan to prevent the ingredients from sticking together and mix all the spices (except cashew nut) and cook for 15 minutes. Stir frequently and make a smooth sauce out of it without burning

the bottom of the saucepan. Next, add cashew nut paste to it and cook thoroughly for 5 minutes. Cook until the oil separates. Step 2: Preparing the vegetable curry Mix turmeric with a tablespoon of salt in water. Add all the vegetables (except the diced tomatoes) to a heavy-bottomed saucepan; pour the salted water and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Drain the water out with a colander. Next, place the boiled vegetables in a pan and add the curry sauce that you have already prepared; mix well and cook for 10

minutes. Add diced tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes. Check the seasoning and add salt if required.Turn off the stove.Pour butter or ghee over the cooked vegetables. Sprinkle green chillis over vegetables and keep the lid on for 10 to 15 minutes over low heat. Garnish with brown onions and chopped coriander leaves. Serve with steamed rice, plain pulao or chapattis if desired.

Decor

17Tucked In

Organise: Quite often than not, office desks look cluttered because we leave papers, files, staplers and other stationery items scattered on them. Categorise your files and place them in folder racks. Stack up the stationery items neatly in a corner. It is equally important to clean your desktop every day before heading home so that you don’t have to remove the mess first thing in the morning.

Floor: Staring at a tiled floor all day will just worsen the monotony of your work life. Laying a floor rug will add a cozy feel to your cubicle. When everything fails, go back to nature. Get cubicle friendly plants which require very little maintenance such as Aloe vera and Jade bonsai; they are widely available at roadside nurseries. You can alternatively

opt for artificial plants which look real. A touch of home: Now that you have cleared your desk and added things to the floor, it is time to get started with the personalisation. You spend a lot of time in the office away from family and friends. Put some family photos in frames on display for you to glance at now and then. You can also pin cards, tiny toys, key chains, etc. but make sure they do not clutter your cube.

Invest in a comfortable chair: At times, the office chairs are very uncomfortable to sit on for long hours. Buy a chair with your own money which is more comfortable and suits your requirements if your workplace allows it.

The finishing touch: Add a tiny mirror to

your cube, write your favourite quotes on a piece of paper and pin it to your cubicle panels, and buy a soft lampshade to make the workplace your very own.

AreaRemember, many cats (especially the males), like to go outdoors and hang out for a bit. If you suddenly can’t find your cat indoors, never fear, they will return. Obviously, this does depend of your neighbourhood. So do you live in a city, suburban, semi-rural, or rural locality? In the city, with lots of vehicle and foot traffic, it is better to get more docile cats who are less likely to be interested in traversing the outside world. In areas with more space between houses and less traffic, having a more adventurous cat is okay, because they will be safe even when boldly going where no cat has gone before (as they might very well believe).

ResidenceNext, you should take note of when deciding on a pet is the home you’re brining the new kitty into. Think about where you live: apartment, house with a law, farmhouse with acreage

etc. Cats are curious by nature, and love to roam. So the more space you give them, the better. On top of that, the more playful your cat is by nature, the more area they prefer.

LocationIn your home, where would you prefer to house your cat: indoor, outdoors, or both? This is important to take into account when selecting the right breed of cat for yourself. If you have a very active feline, then the more time you allow him/her to be outdoors, the better for them and their emotional health. However, this does make cleanliness an issue. Then again, active cats tend to get messy regardless. If you prefer to have your cat be indoors all the time, then best go for the quiet ones.Hours without companyCats might like their personal space and time, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want their owners to be around them. Call it selfish if you will, but if you

really think about it, we humans, social as we tend to be, are often the same. So when picking a cat-friend, think about how much time your cat will get to spend with you. If you have a hectic lifestyle and cannot spend any time

with your pet, go for the ones that tend to be more independent. Definitely work out how much time you have to spend, and then go about selecting the right breed.

Age/ChildrenThe age of the owner matters. The older you are, the more docile your cat should be. If you’re in your mid 60s and have a really playful cat, then you’re in for a whole lot of trouble. Your cat’s mentality and vitality needs to match your own. Also, cats are not super child friendly, so before brining home one of these buddies, think about your family first. If you have no children, you have nothing to worry about. However, the younger your child, the less likely it is that both your child and your cat will be happy together, unless their temperaments match too. If you have a newborn, a cat is a definite no-no, because it causes health issues for the baby.

Marking your territory

Like meowsic for your ears (Part 2)

We spend a lot of time behind our office cubicles. Instead of feeling imprisoned, personalise your cube to make your life a whole lot better and brighter Tausif Sanzum

Now that you’ve made sure your personality gels with your cats’, it’s time to figure out the logistics. Otherwise, like with any other roommate, the two of you will have a hard time getting along

Getting there

Where to stay

What to eat

Hotel Naz Garden, located beside the Dhaka-Rangpur highway is the only four star accommodation available here. Local NGOs (such as TMSS, BRAC etc.) rent out basic rooms but require permission from their head office to accept outside guests.

Bogra is most famous for its sweet yoghurt (mishty doi) and you could find the best kind in Boikali in Sherpur. You may also want to try the “chaap” at Bihari Colony and the crackers called “kotkoti” at Sultan Shah’s shrine.

What to do

North Bengal, nestled between the great Padma and Jamuna is rich in the sites of Budhhist viharas, most of which have never been excavated. However, some major findings in Bogra and Joypurhat have proven that Bangladesh may as well have been the cradle of Budhhism. Grab your clothes and barge your way through the crowded Dhaka to catch a glimpse of the Buddhist remains in the north.

Day 1Head out at the crack of dawn to reach Bogra by noon. After an early lunch, explore the area in and around Mahasthangarh. The museum at Mahasthangarh houses items (coins, terracotta plaques, inscriptions, sculptures) from as early as the 3rd century BC. Here at Vasu Vihara (an area where a number of monasteries are located) terracotta plaques and bronze artifacts were earlier discovered. The 7th century Chinese scholar and traveller, Xuanzang mentioned Vasu Vihara in his ancient writings. Other interesting surrounding sites include Govinda vita (Hindu temple,) Mongolkot vita (Hindu temple,) Totaram Panditer Pathshala (Buddhist monastery) and Vimer jungle (11th century embankment created to protect the city of Mahasthangarh.) By then you’ll have done enough sightseeing for one day. Get some shuteye; there’s more to explore in the region.

Day 2Make an early start after breakfast on day two and make your way towards the two Mahaviharas in Bengal - Jagaddala and Sompura (Pahrapur) - two of the five major Budhhist centres mentioned in the ancient texts. Both are Pala period structures.

Paharpur (UNESCO world heritage site), originally known as “Somapuri Vihara”, was built in the 8th century by the great Pala emperor Dharmapala as a famous Asian centre for education and pilgrimage. The monastery complex spreads over nine hectares of land, measuring 281m on each side with 177 monastic cells. Enclosed with numerous stupas and a multitude of other ancillary buildings, the complex is dominated by a cruciform central temple, which rises in gradually receding three pyramidal terraces.

Jagaddala Vihara is specialised in Vajrayana Buddhism. A large number of texts that would later appear in the Kanyur and Tengyur were known to have been composed or copied at Jagadala. It is likely that the earliest dated anthology of Sanskrit verse, the Subhitaratnakoa, was compiled by Vidyākara here at Jaggadala towards the end of the 11th century or the beginning of the 12th.Take some photos while you’re strolling around before packing your bags and heading home.
