Safety Woes: The looming
threats in Australia’s
rotorcraft industry
For an industry that has long
defined the lifeblood for many
sectors of the Australian
economy, it perhaps comes as
no surprise that helicopter
numbers in the country have
almost doubled in little over a
decade. Contiguous to this
grow th has been the passing of
new regulations aimed at
broadening the focus of
rotorcraft safety, w hich itself
has been the subject of concern
for a number of years. How ever,
w ith March’s fatal crash of a
Robinson R44 helicopter south of
Sydney, efforts to suitably
address the disproportionate
share of helicopter accidents
looks beset w ith further

While rotorcraft safety is
underpinned by the same trends
that affect f ixed-w ing aircraft,
the industry retains its ow n
unique line of problems. With
regards to the current ATSB
publication, Aviation Occurrence
Statistics: 2002 to 2011, it is
clear that helicopters account for
a sizable share of fatal

Retaining experienced pilots
in deficit market conditions
Recently the deficit of pilots has
been the subject of numerous
discussions. With airlines being
forced to park some of their
new ly delivered aircraft and
low er their development
ambitions, many industry players
are faced w ith issue of migrating
professional aviators.
The situation on the highly
competitive market show s no
signs of improving any time
soon, so it is absolutely
necessary to start thinking about
the measures w hich could
potentially be taken in order to
assist airlines in retaining their
experienced w orkforce.
Today both airlines and
experienced pilots clearly realize
the perspectives of the pilot
deficit, particularly in such
markets as China or Russia.
China is anticipating a 70.000+
pilot demand, w hile Russia is still
closed for foreign pilots. In both
countries airlines are forced to
harshly compete for experienced
pilots, particularly Captains.
