Young Pilots ProgramThe Young Pilots Program was officially initiated in February 2015 with 162 students from SMK Dato’ Ahmad Maher, Kota Bharu. Participants were from all the levels of the secondary school pupils i.e. from Form 1 to Form 5. The program was a collaboration between KBFC and the school in consultation with the State Education Department under the school’s co-curriculum activities. It is part of our community service to the public.

In the program, the students were introduced to basic aviation knowledge. They were then given a brief exposure to flight in the AL200 Flight Simulator. The actual flight experience was a 15 minutes flight over the Kota Bharu training area.

On completion of the program, the students were awarded the certificate of participation. HRH Tengku Mahkota Kelantan graciously consented to present the certificates to the students. The occasion was the highlight and a fitting closure to the Young Pilots Program.

The program is now being offered to other schools in Kota Bharu.

The Fire drill

A fire drill was conducted on 7 May 2015 at the Ground School Building as part of the Safety Management System programme. This was the first drill conducted by APFT and a teamwork programme between the various departments. The evacuation drills were done smoothly as per planned without any injuries to students and personnel. Time taken was three minutes and fifty seven seconds and involved 140 students and staff. This programme received good response and cooperation from all involved and attained “thumbs up” from all departments.

Safety Management System Programme Training

Quality and Safety Manager, Capt. Hazri Sastriawan, started the Safety Management System programme training by conducting a series of exercises and talks to create awareness and to impart knowledge on the SMS programme. This is a follow up to Dato’ Yahya’s talk on SMS to the management of APFT when he visited the school.

Capt. Hazri Satriawan conducted a talk on First Aid & Safety Awareness at the Crew Residence for all APFT Cadet Pilots. Also present at the talk were the Chief Instructor and all other instructors.

The talk was part of the SMS training program to educate and create awareness among the cadets on the SMS which include the Basic First

Aid procedure. It focused on the four Basic Pillars of SMS, explaining the Safety Policy, Risk Management, Safety Assurance and Safety Promotion. It also covered the importance of having a basic First Aid knowledge with the aim of saving lives. Videos of First Aid procedure were presented during the talk and it ended with a Q & A session.

Buka Puasa with Students from SK SabakDuring the fasting month, on 6 July 2015, APFT held a buka puasa event, inviting students from SK Sabak to join in. All personnel, teaching staff and students from all departments were present including non Muslims.

As part of the school curriculum activities, a religious programme “Tilawah and Hafazan Al-Quran” was recently conducted by Cikgu Hanif.

The students were taken to Damai Melawi Bachok, Kelantan to ease their stress and as part of their out-door activities. This was also to build up the team work among the students.

The students celebrated “Teachers Day” at the student residence. This was to improve the relationship between the teachers and students. The theme was “Teachers build the knowledge, complete the attitude”.

The buka puasa spread was prepared by the crew residence in-house chef with a couple of whole lambs on the spit added in. After the Iftar the Muslims adjourned to the nearby surau in the MAIK complex to perform the Maghrib prayers.

Runway ExcursionsInformation from FAA Aviation Safety Information indicated that Runway Excursions by aircraft/airplane is one of the leading causes of aircraft incidents worldwide.

What is Runway Excursion? Runway Excursion is an incident involving only a single aircraft, where it makes an inappropriate exit from the runway. This can happen because of pilot error, poor weather, or technical fault with the aircraft. Overrun is a type of excursion where the aircraft is unable to stop before the end of the runway, example of such an event is Air France Flight 358 in 2005.

In the case of pilot error, when an aircraft is on unstabalized approach, at certain predetermined altitude or height, instead of executing the go-around the pilot continue to proceed to land.

Why it is mandatory to execute go-around when the aircraft in such a situation? Besides complying with the company procedures and instructions, the safety of the aircraft will not be compromised.

Surveys by some of the leading aviation organizations i.e. FAA safety board, Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) shows that only about 3 percent of pilots flying an unstable approach actually executed go-around. This

means that about 97 percents pilots continue to execute landing even though they are aware that their aircraft is on unstabalized approach. Runway overshoot, skidding and heavy landing are among incidents resulting from the Runway Excursions.

Among the contributing factors that lead to the Runway Excursions are distraction, fatigue, airspace complexities, birds and single–pilot task saturation. These factors are common knowledge to all the aviators.

All airlines and aviation organisations have built into their operating manuals the procedures and the requirements to execute go-around in the event of unstabalized approach. .

National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and other world leading aviation authorities have recommended and will made this as part of mandatory training. This will not only reduce the habit of non-compliance to the company manuals but will also build into the mindset of the pilots the importance of executing a go-around whenever the aircraft is in unstabalized approach.

Runway Excursion is one of the significant seven safety issues, identified by CAA and widely acknowledged by industry, that cover the main categories

of occurrence identified in aviation accidents that result in potentially catastrophic outcomes. The seven safety issues are Airborne Conflict, Airborne and Post-Crash Fire, Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT), Loss of Control, Ground Handling, Runway Excursion and Runway Incursion/Ground Collision.

CAA has conducted a study on the use of Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) Based information for operators to better monitor and act upon identified high risk issues, in this case that of Landing Runway Excursions, through their SMS. The report on this study can be obtained from Gasil webpage under Report2012/01 Runway Excursions.
