Updating to the Meridien III Daughter Board

You now have the Meridien II and 3D effects board sets removed from

the system. There are four major steps involved in updating to the

    Meridien III daughter board:

    1. Disconnecting the Meridien II board set from the 3D effects boardset

    2. Removing the old daughter board from the digital media board

    3. Attaching the Meridien III daughter board to the digital media

    board

    4. Connecting the Meridien III board set and the 3D effects board set

Disconnecting the Meridien II and 3D Effects Board Sets

To disconnect the board sets you need to remove the over-the-top

connector that connects the two board sets (see Figure 6).

You can disconnect the board sets in one of two ways:

The preferred method is to grasp the over-the-top connector on

both sides with your fingers and loosen. Remove when loose (see

    Figure 6).

c Do not attempt to remove the over-the-top connector by prying it offfrom the end. This can damage the pins on both board sets.

The second method is to gently rock the board sets up and down

until the over-the-top connector is loose, and then remove it.

You should now place the 3D effects board set on a static-free location

and continue to the next section that explains how to replace the

daughter board on the digital media board.

    Removing the Old Daughter Board

You now need to remove the old daughter board from the digital

media board and replace it with the new Meridien III daughter board.

You will need a plastic pen or some other nonconducting instrument

    with a blunt end.

To remove the old daughter board from the digital media board:1. Place the board set on an antistatic bag on your lap, with the

daughter board facing down (see Figure 7).

Figure 7 Removing the Daughter Board

    2. Place your finger between the two boards next to a plastic standoff

(see Figure 7). Using the blunt end of the pen (not the writing

point of the pen), cover the plastic standoff and carefully push

down. Do this for all five plastic standoffs, until you feel each

    connection loosen.

Connecting the Meridien III and 3D Effects Board Sets

Once you have the Meridien III daughter board firmly attached to the

digital media board, you need to connect the Meridien III board set to

the 3D effects board set. It is easier to place the 3D effects board set and

the Meridien III board set into the PCI slot separately, and then attach

    the over-the-top connector.

To connect the two board sets:

    1. Carefully place the 3D effects board set into slot 8 of the PCI (see

    Figure 4).

    2. Carefully place the Meridien III board set into slot 7 of the PCI (see

    Figure 4).

    3. Carefully position the over-the-top connector over the two boardsets as shown in Figure 6. Gently, but firmly, press the connector

    until it is properly seated.

n You might have to jiggle the board sets slightly to get the over-the-topconnector to line up properly.

    4. Connect the external cable between the Meridien III board set and

the Meridien I/O box. Connect the cable to the M connector of

    the Meridien III board set.

    5. Connect the cable from the display controller board to the

Connecting the Meridien III and 3D Effects Board Sets

Once you have the Meridien III daughter board firmly attached to the

digital media board you need to connect the Meridien III board set to

the 3D effects board set. It is easier to place the 3D effects board set and

the Meridien III board set into the PCI slots separately, and then attach

    the over-the-top connector.

To connect the two board sets:

    1. Carefully place the 3D effects board set into slot 3 of the IBM

    system (see Figure 15).

    2. Carefully place the Meridien III board set into slot 2 of the IBM

    system (see Figure 15).

    3. Carefully position the over-the-top connector over the two boardsets as shown in Figure 16.

Meridien III board set (see Figure 19).

    6. Replace the EMI strip that you removed in Removing the EMI

    Strip on page 18.

    7. Use the two screws you saved when you removed the board sets

to connect the board sets to the connector strip at the rear of the

    system.

Installing a Meridien III Board Set and Genie Effects Board

You should be in this section only if you have a Meridien I board and

the original 3D effects board set (see Figure 21). The 3D effects board

set takes up one PCI slot and consists of a Genie effects board and a

Genie effects daughter board designed by Avid.

The boards are located in the following locations:

In the Avid PCI Extender, the Meridien board is in slot 7 and the

3D effects board set is in slot 8 (see Figure 4).

In the IBM IntelliStation, the Meridien board is in slot 2 and the 3D

effects board set is in slot 3 (see Figure 15)

Figure 21 Meridien I Board and Original 3D Effects Board Set

n A cable was originally used to connect the 3D effects board set and theMeridien I board. When Avid designed the Meridien II board they alsodeveloped a new interconnect strategy for the Genie effects board. You no

longer use the Genie effects daughter board, and you connect the Genie effects

board directly to the Meridien III (or Meridien II) daughter board using an

    over-the-top connector (see Figure 22).
