  • Avionics Transponders A Critical Role

    As flight traffic continues to increase, transponders assume a critical

    role in applications like TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System), IFF

    (Identification Friend or Foe) and ATC-aircraft communications.

    Part of the SSR System

    A transponder is an electronic device that responds to interrogations

    transmitted by a ground station. The transponder is a part of the

    Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) system, and it overcomes the

    limitations of primary radar systems by providing additional information

    like aircraft altitude and identity.

    L-Band Operation

    Transponders operate in the L-band with the ground station sending out

    pulses at a frequency of 1030 MHz and the transponder responding to

    these pulses at a frequency of 1090 MHz. Mode-A, Mode-C and Mode-S

    are some of the different methods to interrogate a transponder. Mode-S

    is an improvement over Mode A/C since it utilizes the L-band efficiently by

    selectively interrogating the aircraft with a unique code.
