COLOURSAutumn/Winter 2016-17Our auditory sense picks up the lightest change in decibel. Our olfactory bulbs keep certain memories alive in the brain. Our visual sense is the only one we can’t turn off. So we are sensitive and desensitized to the nuance of the hue at the same time, because we see all the time but aren’t really looking.

There is a concept in the literary theory of phenomena that ‘always already exists’; be it gender, language or anything else. Mankind cannot fathom a time before this and are impacted by the way this phenomena functions. Colour predates all of them. Even if you don’t react, it elicits a response. Red becomes saffron, green envy, grey ambivalence, all black white brown yellow on the outside but red on the inside. Following are the five colour palettes that are influencing the moods of the coming fashion season.

transparent evocative approach to art and design that not only displays a certainstraightforward ideal but also engages the viewer through a perceived tenderness

displayed in an understated manner that creates an emotional stimulus. The visual aesthetic of the laboratory is a focus trend that maintains integrity and confidence that one craves when weeding through the layers of our superficial comforts. Soft, comforting and slightly industrial, this palette has widespread appeal while maintaining a modern clinical minimalist vibe. Pristine white is the perfect backdrop for dependable canyon rose and Niagara blue. Straightforward powdery pastels get a makeover when saddled with transparent desert sage. The overall effect is contemporary and keeps this colour story edgy and welcoming.

he environment goes a long way in determining the kind of output a place can have.Nordic countries create some of the best instrumental music, coastal countries havethe best dance culture, and temperate latitudes have been the hot bed of philosophy.

The comfortable 'home' experience prods different thought. The mood is of a protected niche, a creative alcove that nurtures a sense of creation. Not geography but zeitgeist. It’s a landscape of colours that is intrinsically reflective. Antique moss green, the blue of the Algiers and copper brown take us back to nature while misty rose adds the feminine touch, the palette becomes a portal that provides an impetus for higher creativity.

intensity of pure human emotion is a power we have ignored too long. Passionate grenadine, macaw green and lush grapes create a mood that is anti-subtle, uninhibited and unafraid. Post 19th century advances have alienated the modern man. Now, as a by-product of our sterile digital age the human yearns for a design and experience that engage and embrace us. This creates bonds with the community, with the work, and also with ourselves. A poignancy that is rife with intense colours that have no pause and maintain a powerful expressive presence, the graphic palette defies all restraint and jolts the viewer with a rush of adrenaline.

hat might be considered as a counter-intuitive philosophy in the creative world, makes sense in our everyday organized life. The idea of discipline takes on newfacets of interest. While unhinged, creative and spontaneous bursts of ingenuitycertainly have their place in the process, we re-examine the idea of self-control and what it

means. Living on the fringe as an artist may or may not enhance creative experience or the end-product perhaps we’ll get desired results by setting up stricter parameters. A steady palette of colours for the discerning eye, slightly muted and dusty, these shades of the dune and ginger root do all the hard work, juxtaposing the more vibrant hues and are artistically applied into sophisticated print and pattern motifs. They are the understated elegance and graceful colours that have wide appeal and work for most markets.

he mood is restrained, simple and sublime. Unadorned but confident, we peek intothe world of all things in their natural state whether through architecture, fashion or

and bare. The finished depiction is an honest combination of contrasting elements such as vulnerability and strength, elegance and approachability. Subtle but with instinct, strength and poise, these colours are both elegant and understated. Pristine white, coffee bean, the green of the sassafras tree retain a light and airy feel while prairie sand and lizard brown add dimension and depth grounding the palette with more pigmented tones. Blurred and refreshingly undone, these tones embody an overall feeling of fragility and timelessness.
