T A L K O F T H E N O R T H4TH DECEMBER 2014

Pollensa’s Sete Benavides, the Spanish Olympic canoeist, has received one of the “Premis Populars” from the radio broadcaster COPE Mallorca. The 35th awards ceremony was held at Es Baluard in Palma, and these are the longest-running awards in the Balearics.

Up until demolition started, a house on the Calvari in Pollensa had become more newsworthy because of the fines that Mayor Cifre was racking up for not adhering to a court demand for demolition. Now it has occurred, the owner is seeking compensation of

just over €2m from the town hall. This was a house built in the early 90s which had the required permission and licence, but a neighbour’s complaint that it blocked views led to the decision to demolish it. The town hall has set the compensation at a little under €550,000.

Two years ago, the Council of Mallorca introduced a regulatory procedure by which fiestas and acts which take place during fiestas can be declared to be “of cultural interest”. This was a procedure similar to that which applies to buildings and sites considered to be of cultural interest and which are therefore granted forms of protected status. In the case of fiestas, protection would mean local authorities being obliged to ensure the maintenance and promotion of fiestas that are defined as being of cultural interest and so guarantee that these fiestas retain their essential and traditional characteristics.

The Council’s cultural assessor has presented a report which should lead to five fiestas receiving this protection, and one of them is Sa Pobla’s Sant Antoni fiesta, which dates from the fourteenth century. Another is the fiesta of Sant Joan Pelòs, the representation of John the Baptist. Pollensa does of course have this fiesta at Corpus Christi and the town’s celebration is unique in that it also has the dance of the eagles, but Sant Joan Pelòs is celebrated elsewhere, e.g. in Felanitx. For the record, the other fiestas being considered for cultural interest status are the cossiers of Alaró, the Sóller Firó and the cavallets of Felanitx.

¡Hola! It’s Chriiiistmaaaas! What an absolute pleasure Mallorca is at this time of year. I don’t see any Black Friday nonsense going on here, Everyone is calm, the Christmas concerts and plays are coming. The turkey is ordered, the Christmas cake soaking in brandy. It’s all rather old school.

This year, getting Christmas decorations in is easy with the friendly team at Bisanyes. We have all their information in the paper this week and there are some Christmas wishlists which I hope you will find useful when you do get round to your (trample-free, stress-free) Christmas Shopping!

So, Merry Christmas to everyone and don’t forget, post pictures of your tree on the TOTN Facebook page!

N2 Productions are well into rehearsals for their latest show ‘A Christmas Wish’ and this year’s Christmas production has been written by N2’s very own Nicki Liles. A modern take on ‘A Christmas Carol’, the show deals with issues that are relevant in our daily lives, hopefully poignant and with plenty of laughs, and surprises guaranteed. As there should be with a Christmas show, there will be singing and dancing and audience participation.

N2 Productions has

responded to an increase in demand and this year there are 32 children between the ages of 5 and 17 in the show,

with the backstage crew made up of children as well.

Club Pollensa, accommodates N2 Productions on condition that all the profits from the show go to charity. This year the chosen Charity is ASPANOB – Associació de Padres, de Niños con Cancer de Baleares.

There are many ways that ASPANOB help children and their families during treatment – days out, activities and their most recent project has been funding the decoration of the

children’s oncology ward at Son Espases.

A Christmas Wish will take place in the Club Pollensa on Friday 12th December at 19.30hrs and on Saturday 13th December at 12.00(midday) and 17.00hrs. All tickets are 5€ and will be available from The Club a week before the show.

After four months, the North Mallorca Branch of Calvia Lions is firmly established. The ongoing coach trips to the Balearic Symphony Orchestra in Palma Auditorium and the memorable week hosting two

of the UK’s Kartforce teams of wounded servicemen who came to compete at the Can Picafort racetrack are just two events that have put the branch of the Lion’s on the Mallorca map.

This month the Lions will be out and about in the North distributing warm fleeces

to the needy. While, in the long-term, the group is very busy planning ‘Ayuda Mallorca’. This is a new venture that aims to raise substantial funds for needy children in the Balearic Islands.

Just one way of doing this is a variety of significant musical events around Mallorca. For this, they will be working with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, a world-renowned opera company in London, and a host of major corporate sponsors.

If you are interested in joining the Lions, pop along to one of their regular meetings, at Club Pollensa on the first and third Monday of each month at 6.00pm. Contact details are www.nmbcl.org, www.facebook.com/NMLions, [email protected], or 636 914 425.

Feeling inspired by this year’s Dip in the Sea, Restaurant Siurell owner Juli organized a free lunch for as many people as the group could gather.

The power of our community here in the north shone through and the restaurant was fully booked! 80 people ate for €20 per head, every cent went to two cancer charities: Prostate Cancer UK and the Yes With Cancer Charity. The delicious food was in abundance and the wine was overflowing, the sun shone and Nicki Liles provided the music for an

enjoyable lunch that began at 1pm and finished at 6pm!

There were also some marvellous raffle prizes, the star prize had to be a night’s stay and breakfast at The Hotel Puro in Palma, many local business also supported by donating restaurant meals, massages, manicures as well lots of bottles of wine and boxes

of chocolates.

As a result of this fantastic event no less than €3,000 was raised which will be divided between the two charities. For more information see www.prostatecanceruk.org and www.yeswithcancer.com.

Sewage works - Muro, AlcúdiaThe work to renovate the sewage system in Playa de Muro, originally due to have been undertaken in two phases, is now likely to be completed before the start of high season next summer. The plan had been for work to be suspended for the season and then resumed next autumn, but the contractor has committed to getting it all done within seven months, work having started last month. In Alcúdia, and specifically the area of the port around Magic and Bellevue, the problem of smells and of collapses could become a thing of the past. The town hall says that there is agreement with the regional environment ministry to get work underway on the sewage system by the end of this year.

Puerto Alcúdia’s other swimming-poolHow many people know that there is another swimming-pool in Puerto Alcúdia besides the big one near the sports centre? The pool in question is the old GESA pool down by the port. The pool is now the property of the Balearics Ports Authority, but Alcúdia town hall wants to take it over. The authority said that the town hall would first have to pay a debt for having been granted use of the pool in 2004 (under an agreement that was due to be last 25 years). This agreement didn’t initially involve any payment, but when the town hall started to charge the authority property tax on the new terminal at the port, the authority slapped a charge on the pool. It had said that it wanted at least 150,000 euros from the town hall but has since changed its mind and now seems willing to cede the pool to the town hall for nothing.

Santa Margalida eliminates its debtWhen the current administration took over in 2011, Santa Margalida town hall owed banks a total of 6.5 million euros. Through a mix of good housekeeping and obligations imposed by central government, the debt is set to be reduced to zero by the start of the new year. This improvement in the town’s finances has of course placed additional burden on residents, as property tax increases have contributed largely to it. A proposal that this tax should be cut next year has been ruled out, a decision in contrast to some other town halls on the island which have included tax cuts in their 2015 budgets prior to the elections in spring.

González steps downFirst deputy mayor in Alcúdia, Juan González, has stepped down from his position and has been replaced among the ranks of deputy mayor by Laura Serra who has assumed certain responsibilities that he had, e.g. finance. González had been at the centre of a row regarding the extension of the terrace at his family’s cafe, Cas Capella. This row had escalated to the point of going to court with mayor Coloma Terrasa also in the firing-line. The terrace extension has now been taken away.

El Vilar compensation ruled outThe Supreme Court has overruled a judgement by the Balearics High Court that the regional government should be liable to have to pay 1.6 million euros compensation for a paralysed residential development at El Vilar in Pollensa. The claim stemmed from the reclassification

of land under the previous government in 2008 which meant that the development could not proceed. The developers argued that service provision to the site was such that they were entitled to the compensation demanded, which in effect corresponded with anticipated profit from sales of properties. The Supreme Court disagreed and set compensation at around one-tenth of the amount (to take account of work having been done prior to suspension of the development). The decision does not necessarily mean that compensation claims elsewhere in Pollensa will be similarly dismissed. The government, for instance, faces the distinct possibility of having to pay out 22.5 million euros for a blocked development at Cala Carbo in Cala San Vicente.

La Gola - the complaints go onEver since the La Gola wetland area of Puerto Pollensa was paid some attention a few years ago and was the subject of not inconsiderable investment to tidy it up, plant new trees, clean the water and create a parking area, the arguments have been ongoing. The Alternativa per Pollença party has criticised the lack of maintenance and the failure to comply with promises as to planting. The town hall now wants a further parking zone in the area and has also sought an agreement on co-management of La Gola with the regional environment ministry, something which might sound strange as such an agreement was supposedly part of the project which, only for a brief time, beautified La Gola.

Dog newsThe death of a third dog at Puerto Pollensa’s Llenaire beach has led to another temporary closure of the “dog beach”. Last summer, the beach had to be closed

in order to allow police investigations into the poisoning of the first two dogs. Deliberate attempts to poison dogs on Mallorcan beaches are not confined to Llenaire. Poison was, for instance, found on a beach in Calvia in the summer. Other dog news in the area concerns the fines being imposed in Alcúdia for taking dogs onto the beaches. This has long been considered normal practice in winter, but an Alcúdia by-law makes it clear that dogs are not permitted on beaches at any time of the year. Police, often in plainclothes, have therefore been applying this law. This is an infraction classified as “least serious” when it comes to the scale of the fine, which is set at between 60 and 300 euros, meaning - surprise, surprise - that fines levied have been at the top end of the scale.

Fernández wedding causes stormIt took an announcement in “Hola” magazine to spark it off, but storm there is over plans for the wedding of Palma-born basketball player, Rudy Fernández, one of Spain’s top players and member of the Spanish world championship-winning team in 2006. The Real Madrid player’s marriage to Helen Lindes in July next summer is to be at La Fortaleza, and some 200 guests are due to attend. The storm has been caused by the fact that La Fortaleza is off-limits to the general public when, according to a law seemingly introduced some fifteen years ago, it is meant to be open to the public for at least four days a month. Though privately owned, La Fortaleza is considered to be a property of cultural interest in the public domain and therefore subject to public access on a limited basis. The Fernández wedding is being seen, therefore, as an example of cultural interest for VIPs and not the general public.

Bisanyes for Your Christmas TreeIf you fancy a real Christmas Tree this year then look no further than Jardineria Bisanyes. Due to arrive at the centre as we go to press, Bisanyes will have two varieties of Fir, the Excelsa and Normandia. All trees come with a stand and prices range from €21.50 to €68 for the Excelsa, €32.90 to €110 for the more luxurious Normandia. The trees come direct from Girona on the Mainland and they vary from 1m to 3.5m!

Three Kings Just when you think it has all quietened down, at the beginning of Janurary, there is a gentle rumble of children’s feet packing into the square preparing for the arrival of the Three Kings. This is when local children receive their presents (although Christmas day is growing). Get your lists from the council and arrange for the Three Kings to deliver presents to your door!

What to Eat? If you abstain for most of the year, this is the time to give in and indulge in a lovely cup of Chocolate a la Tazza. Try Valor chocolate

and drop chunks into hot milk, stir until all

is melted and smooth. Serve hot with

something to dunk it in. To be really authentic, dip in your ensaimada or Coca de Patatas, the light spongy buns that have an aniseed taste. Forget about the lard and calories. It’s Christmas!

On Christmas day itself, the traditional dinner features Sopa de Navidad (made

with turkey broth) followed by turkey and then roast pork. For desert, prepare a tray of turrón. The typical Mallorcan turrón is a thin version with almond paste in between sheets of rice paper or ‘neulas’. Mallorcan almonds and indeed all dried fruits have a very prominent role at Christmas, either in the form of ‘turrón’ and marzipan or on their own.

On New Year’s Eve, don’t forget your 12 grapes and eat one for each chime as it strikes midnight. A tricky but gentle challenge!

Not your standard Christmas service, the beautiful El Canto de Sibila is held in Churches across the island. So beautiful, it was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on November 16, 2010. Indeed, the Sibila is one of the few living examples of medieval folklore that only survives in Mallorca and Alghero (a city on the Italian island of Sardinia where people speak Catalan). In recent years, the song has been recovered in parts of Menorca, Valencia and Catalonia.

A Gergorian chant, it is sung by a young male or female and the lyrics contain a prophecy describing the Apocalypse.

Although it is sung in many churches on the island including Pollensa, the most emblematic is the Cathedral of Palma and the Sanctuary of Lluc, where the song is sung by a ‘Blavet’ — a member of Lluc’s children’s choir.

Historically, the Sibila has pagan roots and was introduced in Europe in the Middle Ages. It arrived in Mallorca with the Christian conquest of 1229. While the staging and music have seen slight changes over time, the original features of the medieval period have remained. Considering the cultural invasion and the high percentage of tourism on the island, the longevity and strength of this tradition make it even more impressive.

Panto Time! The NOMADS are back for the Christmas Panto. This time it’s ‘Over the Rainbow’, an adaptation of Wizard of Oz and performances will be held at the end of January. The group is still in need of some young actors aged between 6-15 years. Rehearsals will be on Fridays 7-8.00pm. It promises some good fun with first hand drama, dance and voice coaching from NODA trained Sharry. Please call Jan or Sharry 627293273/672863623 for more information.

A couple of weeks ago, Mallorca’s ‘favourite son’ Rafael Nadal laid the first stone of his International Tennis Academy in his hometown, Manacor. The 24,000 sq m centre will house 18 tennis courts, a school and halls to accommodate students from all over the world. The Rafa Nadal Foundation, which is currently housed in Barcelona, will move to the academy site where there will also be a new national and international sports museum.

The surrounding installations will include three swimming pools, a padel court, a football pitch and a multi-sports court. There will be 35 apartments for professional teams to come to the island to train. It’s clear that this new facility will contribute to Mallorca’s Sport Tourism ambitions. The first phase of development will last 18 months, the academy itself is set to open in the summer of 2016.

The Radio One Mallorca Christmas Toy Appeal is well under way. Down on the south of the island, toys are coming in thick and fast. We, in the north need to catch up! There is no shortage of drop-off points in the region. Please take your new (or mint condition) toys to the Allen Graham shop (C/ Medico Llopis 19) or to BFS on (C/Mendez Nuñez, 21) in Puerto Pollensa. You can also take toys to Pollensa Care (C/ Medico Llopis 19). In Alcudia, drop off points are Alpha Pools & Spas, (Carrer Pollentia, 75, Alcudia). At the time of press, Frankie’s Bar, next door to Victoria’s charity shop (C/ Arta 40 Bajo, Alcudia), has just started collecting toys too.

All the toys will be passed on via the Allen Graham For Kids Charity and the Lions who have their own network of families. In the south, Mediterranea and the Salvation Army will also be distributing the toys. There are lots of children who need something special this year so please do give what you can.

Breath of Fire is one of the foundations of pranayama used in the practice of Detox Yoga. Pump the navel in and out while breathing rapidly through the nose. Breath through the nostrils with the mouth closed. It releases toxins and deposits from the lungs, mucous linings, blood vessel and other cells. It expands the lung capacity and increases vital strength.

Traditionally all rotations involving the organs in the belly are detox oriented. I have selected these two as are easy to perform even for those new to yoga.

Marichyasana 3 (Seated Twist)

From a seated position with your legs extended, bend your right knee drawing the right foot up to the inside of the left thigh. Keep your

right foot there or cross it to the outside of the left thigh for a deeper twist. You can keep the left leg straight or bend at the knee and draw your left foot back to the outside of your right hip. Hug the right knee towards your chest with your left arm. Lift your right arm, rotate the shoulder and reach your fingers to the mat behind you. To deepen the twist, press your left elbow to the outside of the right thigh. Inhale to lengthen the spine, exhale to rotate. Hold for a few breaths and repeat on the other side.

Supta Matsyendrasana (Reclined Twist)

From a reclined position, draw your knees towards your chest. Keep legs together or cross your right leg over top of the left with the inner thighs squeezing. Spread your arms out at shoulder height with palms touching the floor. Inhale at the centre, as you exhale let the legs fall to the left, gaze to the right. Rotation happens in the lower- and mid-back as you keep the shoulders and upper back grounded. Hold for a few breaths and repeat on the other side.

Yoga Pollensa will hold a detox programme. There will be four classes held on every Wednesday at 18.45 for the whole month, starting on 7th January.

By far the worst possible news emanating from the Son Moix Stadium is that Real Mallorca have agreed a deal to sell highly coveted wonderkid Marco Asensio to Real Madrid in the winter transfer window for €3.7m. It was almost inevitable that he would leave; both Chelsea and Manchester City were rumoured to have bids in the offing and Barcelona had theirs rejected in the summer. Not all bad news though - Madrid have pledged to loan Marco back to the islanders for the rest of the season. The buyout clause in Asensio´s contract is pegged at €4.5m and Madrid have saved almost €1m by agreeing to leave ‘their’ player on the island for a short period. The fans are hoping that he can drag the team into the promised land of La Liga,

probably by the playoff route. If that were to happen there

is another possible carrot on offer from

Madrid. They have publicly stated that Asensio will not be assigned to their B

team next season and will be in the nominated

25 man first team squad, or be loaned to another La Liga team to gain experience. Meaning, albeit a long shot, that Marco could possibly be playing for Mallorca next season in the top flight of Spanish football. And, at time of press, with contracts still unsigned, there are rumours that FC Barcelona are trying to hijack the move with another bid.

Following the home defeat by Sporting Gijon last Sunday, the team are mid-table four points off the promotion play-off places, but equally four points off the relegation zone.

The Spanish second division is very open this season and if Mallorca can put another good run together then promotion is achievable. Before last weekend, the club had a seven game unbeaten run with five consecutive victories and two draws before Sporting spoiled that sequence.

Off the field Utz Claassen is still accumulating shares and put the latest batch in his wife’s name. He is still vying for overall control although Italian Filippo Ghirelli is still attempting to acquire a majority interest. Eventually this long drawn out saga will come to an end, one way or another.

Mallorca have a tricky away fixture at Real Betis on Monday the 8th followed by a home game with Numancia on the 14th and an away match at Ponferradina on the 21st. There is a Christmas break in fixtures in Spain and the first match of 2015 will be home to Albacete on Sunday the 4th of January.
