POLLENSA’S TOURISM PROMOTION PLAN

Birdwatching, cycling and walking are the main features of the tourism promotion development plan that Pollensa town hall will be rolling out during the rest of this year and next year. Other aspects of this plan include improved signage and the improvement of the bike lane between Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa. As far as the birdwatching is concerned, the opposition at the town hall have criticized the plan for not addressing the regular problem of the La Gola visitors’ centre being closed. There is also criticism regarding the proposal to close the Formentor road (the one that runs parallel to the Anglada Camarasa promenade) and about the use of the brand name “Pollença”, which was introduced several years ago (or rather the Ç was introduced) but which has not had the desired impact.

Alcudia’s St Jaume Fiesta featured the fourth edition of Pollentinus Civis (We are Citizens of Pollentia) with activities covering all spectrums of life from culinary and recreational to cultural and musical, for people of all ages. The “menu pollentins” focused on cooking and various Roman style dishes.

On Saturday morning, more than 25 children took part in the library Can Torres workshop’s Roman Clothing with Antonia Marquis, and Roman Games on the patio. The evening saw hairdressers and florists decorate participants’ hair with flowers in Roman style. And

on Saturday afternoon those up to age 16 enjoyed the Ludus Parvus, a disco with music, games and gladiator fights. The Pollentinus Civis concluded in the evening with The Festa Capitolina to honour the gods Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, with music from the 1980s and 1990s and sets by DJ Kike and Dj Space Domech.

Work Begins for North Mallorca Lions

Galeries MiCer32 begins collaboration with Aligi Sassu Exhibition Micer Studio and Espai d’Art 32 began its collaboration, Galeries MiCer32 in Pollensa with a new exhibition of Italian artist, Aligi Sassu’s stunning lithographs on the Mediterranean. Born in Milan, Sassu lived in Cala San Vicente and Pollensa. The beautiful work on silkscreen, lithograph, etching, watercolour is on show at Micer in Pollensa where everyone can appreciate his works which are

full of life. The opening was held on July 17, the day the artist was born and died here in Pollensa where he lived and worked for over 40 years. The opening was attended by the Mayor of Pollença Mr. Bartomeu Cifre and representatives from the Sassu Foundation.

¡Hola! La Patrona is here. I don’t think I will ever tire of this fiesta.

The programme of events was, as is tradition, slow to come out but as soon as it was, it was up on our website: www.TOTNMallorca.com.

On page 6-7 you will see a brief history and explanation of what the Moors & Christians is all about and we thought you might like to singalong with Visca Pollensa too, the words are there for you to learn off by heart!

As always, we’d love to see your pictures so tag us on Twitter and use the hashtag #LaPatrona2014, you might make it to Tweet of the Week.

See you in August!

Monday 21 July 2014 saw the inaugural meeting of the North Mallorca Branch of Calvia Lions

Club held at the Real Club Nautico in Puerto de Pollensa. With an aim to work at a grass roots level and be in close contact with local communities, the North Mallorca Branch of Calvia Lions, begins with the goal of receiving its own Charter during 2015, becoming a fully-fledged and independent Lions Club in its own right. Susan Mackay, a former educator from Scotland with significant experience in organizing community projects, is one of the founder members and newly elected Branch President. Susan explained, “Becoming a Lions Club member is both an honour and a privilege. Lions enjoy the satisfaction of working together in the spirit of true teamwork and

comradeship to help those in the community less fortunate than themselves, whether the very young, the aged, the infirm, the handicapped or those excluded from society.” Other founder members and elected officers are: Sandra Hamill (Branch Secretary), David Campling (Branch Treasurer), Nicolas Vazeille-Glitza (Branch Membership Officer), and Tony Wood (Branch Fund Raising & Events Officer). At the meeting Susan said “Our membership may at the moment be small, but each and every one of us is highly committed to the future success of the North Mallorca Branch of Calvia Lions. It’s just the beginning and an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of those in the north. I hope that by this time next year we will be able to look back on a period of steadily growing membership and a number of successfully completed community projects.” For further information visit the Calvia Lions website at www.lionsmallorca.net or email [email protected]

N2 Productions were delighted to present €220 to The Rotary Club of Pollensa, last week. The money was raised from their Tapas and Teatro evening in May. The money was presented at The Club Pollensa where N2 productions are based, to the president of The Rotary Club, Catalina Ferrer.

The money will be used to buy food for the Food Bank in Puerto Pollensa which had a shortage of food earlier on this year. It seems inconceivable that in an area like Pollensa people are unable to feed their families, but the harsh reality is that with shorter contracts being offered to employees and lower wages there is a need for these food banks, which are managed by the Nuns. The Rotary Club will be organizing a campaign in supermarkets on the 1st Saturday in October to encourage shoppers to buy a few extra items while doing their shopping to donate.Nickie Baylis told TOTN, “If anyone finds themselves in difficult circumstances the town hall issues vouchers with which they can claim food from the Nuns, however, we were told that at the beginning of the year that they had none left.”

Alcúdia & Pollensa Cultural SharingAlcúdia and Pollensa town halls have signed an agreement which will allow for the sharing of cultural facilities. What this seems to mainly mean is that Pollensa can use the auditorium in Alcúdia (which it did for the final concert of last year’s Pollensa Festival). Pollensa town hall dropped any plan for an auditorium on account of cost and also because the auditorium project had never been officially called for by the town hall.

Sea disabled access denouncedThe Costas Authority has denounced the installation of the ramp for disabled access at the Albercuix beach in Puerto Pollensa, arguing that the necessary permission has not been granted. Mayor Cifre considers “arbitrary” this opposition by the Costas,

when it has failed to act in respect of other matters in the port, such as irregular moorings.

Jewellery finds at Son RealA recent burst of excavation activity at the Son Real necropolis has uncovered some treasure, i.e. some fifty pieces of lead that were used to make necklaces and bracelets. The pieces of lead are reckoned to date from the sixth or seventh century BC. Meanwhile, Santa Margalida town hall has taken umbrage at the demand made by the regional government for using the houses in Son Real for a concert during August’s fiestas. The government wants €1,000. The town hall is disgusted, pointing to the government’s failure to maintain the finca adequately.

Fines for obstructing Lluc road A new ordinance has been proposed which will apply to the old road from Pollensa to Lluc, which has been the subject of controversy for years because of access being restricted to walkers. Fines of

up to €3,000 can be levied for there being obstacles to horses and bikes as well as walkers. The ordinance comes from the Council of Mallorca and is open to public consideration.

Can Llobera nears completionThe family home of the Pollensa poet Miquel Costa i Llobera, bought some years ago by the town hall, is to become a library. Renovation work that was badly needed on the house is due to be finished by November when the library will officially be inaugurated.

Bullfighting motion defeated A campaign called Mallorca Sense Sang (Mallorca without blood) has led to three town halls recently announcing that their municipalities are against bullfighting. These are Artà, Santa María del Camí and Sencelles. An anti-bullfighting motion raised at Pollensa’s council meeting was rejected, the main Partido Popular party defeating the motion with the support of the UMP’s councillor and the

abstentions of the PP’s El Pi coalition partners.

Alcúdia consider new terrace lawColoma Terrasa has sought to defuse the row over the occupation of the public way in front of a neighbour’s house by the Cas Capella café in Alcúdia old town by announcing that there will be a new ordinance to clarify the situation regarding terraces on the public way. The café is owned by the family of assistant mayor Joan González. Former mayor Miquel Llompart continues to argue that the tables in front of the house constitute trespass.

Can Picafort bobbies on bikesSanta Margalida town hall has unveiled a new police cycling unit, a group of five officers who will use bikes to patrol by the beach in Can Picafort in order to check on illegal selling and massages. The unit will operate until September.

The Cancer Support Group Mallorca is a service for English-speaking residents or visitors of the island who are in need of emotional and practical support during such a tough time. The group offers free one-to-one counselling for the patient and their family giving them emotional support on coping with cancer, the side-effects and to help answer questions on the affect on family and relationships. Offering crucial practical support as well, the group helps with hospital visits, gives translation services, provides wigs and helps discuss treatment options, side effects and how to cope with them. They even provide help at home, providing precious time off for the

carer. The group has two permanent drop-in centres (Mondays in Portals Nous and at the Pollensa Care Centre in Puerto Pollensa) and they provide educational programmes in the International schools here on the island. Later in the year the organization will be running “Coping with Cancer” Courses which will include relaxation classes, nutritional information, classes on positive thinking, and body image classes.

With no charity shop, Cancer Support Group Mallorca is funded by donations and various fund raising events. Please see www.cancersupportmallorca.com for more information.

“Mare de Déu dels Angels, assistiu-mos.

Pollencins, aixecau-vos, que els pirates ja són aqui.”

Our Lady of Angels, help us. Pollensa, get up! The pirates are

already here!

These are the words of Joan

Mas calling to the heavens on

encountering the pirate leader, Dragut. The whole

event dates back to mid-1500s, it has little to do with the historical Islam

occupation of Mallorca and Spain. The re-conquest of Spain ended in 1492 with the final eradication of Islamic influence in Granada. Indeed, Jaume of Aragon had already delivered Mallorca from Islamic domination in the thirteenth century. These Moors and Christians had their spat in 1550 and Dragut, a Turkish pirate was nothing more than an opportunist. The battle ensued as a result of a treacherous local Christian, Joan Xumet (aka Lloctinent) who has his own role in the contemporary simulation, who allied himself with the pirates. In a nutshell, the battle gets started about 7pm when Joan and Dragut encounter each other in the Plaça Almoina. Joan eyeballs Dragut, calls on the Patrona for her assistance, chases him and his troops to Sant Jordi and then hoofs

it to the football pitch for a bundle with Dragut and his boys. They beat them, nick their flag and Joan and his mates trundle back to the main church in Plaça Major for some thanksgiving. This is rounded off by a hearty rendition of Pollensa’s anthem, Visca Pollensa, and a knock-your-socks-off firework display. The battle is re-enacted every year on August 2nd. It is the realism in its delivery that makes the event so important and so thrilling. The Moors and Christians is live theatre. It is not glint-toothed and sanitized; it is pirates battling with defenders, it’s messy, it’s dirty, it’s crowded, and it’s hot and sweaty. These are non-entertainers, entertaining. Whether they are young or old, the people of Pollensa are proud of their local tradition. It is astonishing and a

remarkable manifestation of popular theatre for and by the people, performed in the streets that once witnessed the actual battle. (Article taken and adapted from back issues of TOTN.)

About 3,000 residents of Pollensa voted on Friday 18th July for their choice of Joan Mas and Dragut. Lluís Cànaves Caimari, won the Joan Mas election with 900 votes (27%). This was Cànaves’ third attempt; last year he was second in the running.

For Dragut, his lieutenant and bearer, Tolo Estades Cerdà, Joan Vila and Tòfol Ferriol Pizà Andreu, won with 48% of the vote.

Elections were held between 6-10.30 in the Joan Mas gardens of the Old Town. All candidates

were present along with their friends and family, building up to the final hours of the campaign.

Indeed, everyone and his aunt were out to vote that night. It’s serious business. And the fiesta feeling kicked off with all-night partying.

We’re very excited about the Patrona Fiesta this weekend. Where can I get a costume for my kids? They would love to dress up and join in.Lesley, visiting from UK

There are a few shops around town where you can buy the real thing. Can Xumet and some small Mercerias have them. But it’s so late in the day that they may have all gone. The outifts are made by hand and cost over €100. Best to ask a local friend if you can borrow one. If you want to plan in advance, you can buy the linen and order one to be made

ready for next year. It’s much cheaper that way. Whatever you do, don’t send little Jonny out in his pirate fancy dress. Dragut was a pirate but think more Aladdin than Captain Pugwash.

Open Water Swim Programme Running on the beach not only provides an idyllic setting for your run, it can improve your speed and muscle tone too.

According to a study, pounding the sand – especially dry, loose sand - requires 1.6 times more energy than running on pavements as your body has to work harder to deal with the soft, unstable surface. This results in more defined muscles and a quicker run when you get back on solid ground. There’s also much less impact force when you run on sand as opposed to running on concrete, so reducing the stress of pounding on the lower extremities.

Running barefoot on the sand allows your feet to move through their natural range of motion, which helps to strengthen your feet and ankles. However, whether you decide to run with trainers or without, start with short runs to build strength in your feet and gradually lengthen running time as your body adapts to running on a new surface. If you do decide to go barefoot, look out for sharp objects in the sand. If you wear trainers, use Vaseline on your feet and blister-proof socks, as sand will inevitably make its way into your shoes.

The wet, hard-packed sand by the sea is the easiest sandy surface to run on, so why not try running ten minutes on that to warm up, followed by a minute on the soft, dry sand further from the sea for a harder workout, then back to the hard-packed sand for another minute to recover, zigzagging back and forth until you’ve done five to ten one minute bursts.

Don’t forget to finish with a dip in the sea to cool you down and soothe tired muscles!

Runnyknows is a friendly team of experienced runners offering guided runs in and around Puerto Pollensa. Visit www.runnyknows.com or see what they’re up to on www.facebook.com/runnyknows.

The Open Water Swimming Programme is from Guillem Ramon, Sports Director of Flow Fitness and Director of the 5km Travesia Son Serra de Marina, which was held on 26th July. The training plan is based on 3 days a week of training (leaving a day of rest in between). Before you take on the plan, you should be able to swim 1km non-stop in open water fairly comfortably. You should have experience in choppy water and you are comfortable sighting and can swim in a fairly straight line.

Side Kick: kick on one side with one arm out in front of you in the water. Keep the extended arm relaxed. Keep head under water coming up for breath. This drill will make you more comfortable on your side, encouraging body rotation. Arm Side Kick: kick on one side with one arm out in front of you in the water. Bring the other arm forward in a freestyle stroke to head level. Pull down back to your side. Come up to breathe. This drill develops front-quadrant arm timing. Pause Swimming: while kicking on your side, bring the other arm forward in a freestyle stroke to head level. Pause in that position while kicking. Pull the other arm to complete the stroke and roll your body all the way around to the other side (180 degree turn). Repeat as many times as possible breathing regularly. This drill encourages body rotation and front-quadrant arm timing.

A Sporty Summer in the North

We are currently looking for properties to rent in 2015. If you want to enjoy a high

level of return on your investment, please call Julie at Private Villas Pollensa.

Someone once said to me, “Well, nothing much goes on up north does it?” How wrong could he be? What with the Beach Volleyball, Beach Rugby, Badminton, Football and Basketball 3x3 as well as the Cursa Popular, Cursa Patrona, the Son Serra de Marina Open Water Swim not to mention the tennis, football, basketball, dance and more camps that are taking place over the last month, it is safe to say that the north is a pretty sporty, and busy, place.

Even if cardio is not your thing, board games and chess are a feature on Pollensa’s Patrona programme.

Here are just a few images we have come across, if you have more from any of the sporting activities this month please do share on www.Facebook.com/talkofthenorthmallorca or on twitter @TOTNMallorca. If you’re up for it, Sunday’s Can Picafort Triathlon is still open to entries.

There’s no Mallorquinista column this week. We are still waiting in anticipation for news of what will happen to the club this season in terms of ownership. But Charles Nutter from English Radio Pollensa aka The Mallorquinista is not sitting around with his feet up. In fact he is training hard for the Pilgrimage Walk from Palma to Lluc Monastery. Now in its 41st year, the annual Marxa des Güell a Lluc a Peu takes in Palma, Santa Maria, Maratxi, Binnisalem, Lloseta, Selva, Caimari, before completing the 48km trek in Lluc. The walk is on Saturday 2 August and will start at 11pm, with an expected arrival between 6-11am Sunday morning. Charles is raising money for

Help for Heroes and donations can be made in cash at Multi Hire Puerto Pollensa, Euromart (formerly British Food Store) Puerto Pollensa or La Taverna Bar (opposite Ferreria Plomer) in Pollensa. You can also donate via www.justgiving.com/Charles-Nutter. Good Luck Charles!
