Sightseeing Tour
Viharn Phra Mongkhol Borpit
The principal Buddha image in this Viharn is one of the biggest bronze images of Buddha in Thailand.
Many small Buddha images were discovered inside this big Buddha image
The Viharn was destroyed when the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya in 1767 and it was in 1956 that Viharn was rebuilt in its former style.
The Ancient Palace
It was built by king U-Thong when he established the capital at Ayutthaya in 1350. Several new buildings and pavilions were added by king, but they were completely destroyed in 1767, leaving only brick foundations, porticos and walls .
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
In 1500 King Ramathibodi II cast a 16 meters height standing image of Buddha.
The whole image was covered with gold weighing about 171 kilograms. But when Ayutthaya fell in 1767, the Burmese set fire to the image in order to melt off the gold.
Three chedis in Ceylonese style
The figures you see on the left are three chedis in the Ceylonese style. They contain the ashes of three kings of Ayutthaya.
Chaos Sam Phraya National Museum
It houses various image of Buddha in bronze dating back 500 to 1,000 years as well as famous wood-carved door panels and different types of Buddhist altar sets.
A receptacle at the Thai Pavilion holds relics of Lord Buddha and objects of art from about 560 year ago. The museum has also a substantial collection of local artifacts
The elephant kraal
Locally called “Paniad,” the place was used was for the capture of wild elephants in the old days.
It is a spacious enclosure with big teak logs as its fence.
Wat Panan Cherng
This monastery is situated on the river bank opposite the southern part of the town.
The huge gilded image of Buddha
The most interesting thing in this monastery is the huge gilded image of Buddha, 19 meters high in a sitting position, highly worshipped by the people throughout the country.
Part II In Sukhothai

Ramkamhaeng National Museum
Here you can see the image of the walking Buddha.
The collection of Sukhothai sculpture.
The museum houses are fine collection of Sukhothai sculpture, ceramics and other periods. It also has exhibits from other periods.
Stone inscription of King Ramkamheang
Here is the famous stone inscription of King Ramkamhaeng. King Ramkamhaeng had recorded his conquests of surrounding kingdoms
on it.
Manangkasila
The stone throne of King Ramkamhaeng,called the “Manangkasila.”
Wat Mahathat
Wat Mahathat is regard as the magical and spiritual center of the kingdom. It is not definitely known when it was built, but we believe that were founded by King Si Indraditya, the first king of the Sukhothai Dynasty.
And King Lo Thai remodelled and completed it in 1345.
A stucco frieze of walking monks
It was partly built in the Khmer style, whose powerful kingdoms preceded those of the Thais.
Here around the base of the temple’s main tower is a stucco frieze of walking monks.
Wat Si Sawai
This temple is called Wat Si Sawai. It was originally a Hindu shine which contained an image of Shiva. The three towers were built in a modified Khmer style.
Wat Sa Si
Here is a chedi in the Si Lankan style. Now we will move to the ordination hall, which lies on the island to the east of this chedi.
The ruins in front of us are six rows of columns leading to a well-restored seated Buddha image.
Wat Chana Songkharm
Here at Wat Chana Songkharm, you can see particularly fine Si Lankan style chedis, but unfortunately only the lower part still stand.
Wat Trakhuan
You will see only the lower parts of Si Lankan style chedis. They are of the Chiang Saen period.
