O n June 19, 2016, Azerbaijan hosted its first Formula One automobile race, the European Grand Prix, in Baku. Azerbaijani Pres. Ilham Aliyev hailed the event as a major step toward raising the country’s international profile and attracting tourism. The Formula One race is the third high-profile event that Baku had hosted in recent years; it also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 and the European Games in 2015. Critics of the government accused Aliyev’s administration of “sportswashing”—using international sporting events to project a sanitized image of Azerbaijan that distracts from widespread corruption and human rights violations in the country.
