E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorChristmas is a special time in Badingham. Victor’s tree looked splendidonce again - it’s a delight to see. I just managed to squeeze in the doorfor Carols in the Pub - no, not because I’d been out for our work’sChristmas lunch! The White Horse was packed out and it was a lovelyatmosphere with people of all ages gathered in song. Thanks to Racheland Victor for their musical accompaniment - and Lisa for the sausagerolls and mince pies which filled the gap for those of us missing tea!

I was able to escape early from work for the Crib Service too - Mum justhad time to grab her coat! Church was full to bursting and everyoneenjoyed seeing the little ones dressed up for the nativity. Once upon atime, that was me - playing one of the Kings, naturally enough.

Find details of the monthly, child-friendly family services on Page 9.

It sounds like I missed a great evening at the New Year’s Eve party inthe Village Hall, organised by Lisa and Mark. Sonja writes more about iton Page 23. If you lost a long brown wig - was someone dressed asCher? - or other items of fancy dress, please contact Gillian.

I have already placed my order for tickets to the Beetle Drive - it’s a ‘fastfurious game for all the family’ - absolutely no skill involved!

Best Wishes and Good Health,Tish

BADINGHAM

A Happy and Healthy New Year to all our readers!

Christmas BiscuitsWe delivered shortbread in time for Christmas, receiving many cards andverbal thanks. These included messages from Carol & Mike Bostock-Smith,Terri and Geoff James, Jean & Tony Kelk and Chris Dance.Patricia sent these kind words:Dad was so pleased to receive his biscuits and touched that he wasremembered as he doesn't get out and about much. Many thanks to theBCC, who work so hard to raise funds just so that nice events can happenfor the village. We are lucky to have you. Best wishes, Patricia

Plans for the yearWe have some ideas for 2016 but if there’s something you would like tosuggest, please let us know. You can speak to any of the committeemembers listed below.

Little Ernie 50/50 DrawThanks to everyone who supported us in 2015. So we are ready to start thedraw on 1st April, please return your Membership Form to our Treasurer,Gerry Newman: Priory Cottage, Laxfield Road, Badingham, IP13 8LR.

Review of the yearThe BCC would like to thank the people who regularly and generously offerus their help and support. When you count everyone’s time, much effort goesinto supporting out community - but a great deal of fun too. We wereimpressed by the numbers who attended our AGM and joined in the discus-sion – a good indication that there is the spirit to keep our community thriving.

Looking back at the past year or so, we’ve been pleased to have organisedevents that have been well-attended and involved a lot of chatter, laughterand meeting of friends old and new.Lots of people gathered for instruction on using the defibrillator and basicCPR skills. Our thanks to the Ambulance Service for their support and toeveryone who turned out that December evening. The BCC was initiallyplanning to fund the machine, so we are very grateful to the East of EnglandCo-op for providing the unit. The BCC paid for an upgrade to the VillageHall’s electrics, when it was found that they did not meet regulations, and wealso contributed towards outdoor lighting to make the car park safer.

For several years we have run an Easter Egg Hunt for the youngermembers of our community. Numbers have dwindled in the past few years, which is probably a reflection of the changing age groups of Badingham’sresidents and families getting out and about, rather than staying at home. We’ll be happy to arrange another egg hunt if there is enough interest –please let us know.

We were delighted to hear the stallholders at the Summer Fete made agood profit. While other villages run their fetes to raise money for just onecause, we like to give all the groups in Badingham a chance to boost theircoffers. It also gives local craftspeople a venue for selling their wares – atjust £5 for a stall. We always arrange to have a children’s entertainer at thefete – this year it was a Punch and Judy show, last year a balloon modeller.

The Village Lunch for people aged 70+ proved very popular. It gave peoplea chance to meet and natter with old friends and other residents who theymight not normally come across. Thanks to Lisa and Mark for hosting us.As it was so successful it’s something we will look at repeating, for any ofyou who missed out last time. Remember to let us know when you’re 70 –some of you look so young!

And for 2016

We’re making plans for this year’s fete and to toast the Queen’s 90th

birthday. We’re also purchasing new tents – to protect us from the unpre-dictable weather at these events! – and items such as a new tea urn. Pluswe will continue to cover printing costs for the Echo, of course.

Village Outings have proved very popular in the past and we would be veryhappy to subsidise daytrips, subject to your support. Here are some suggestions: Duxford airfield museum Norwich for Christmas shopping a summer trip to the seaside a Christmas Panto

Any of those take your fancy? Please let us know.

We recognise the effort people have made, over many years, to raise fundsand we take seriously our responsibility over how these reserves are spent. For example, we have asked the Village Hall committee, more than once, for a ‘shopping list’ of items they might need to redecorate and maintain thehall. We know our funds run far short of plans to re-model the hall but wecan contribute towards creating a warmer welcome in the meantime.

The BCC hold some funds in trust – raised by previous members of ourcommittee and groups for ventures that have discontinued, for the timebeing.

If anyone is interested in re-establishing a Youth Club, there is a smallstarting fund to which we would be happy to give further backing. The YouthClub has been run very successfully in the past but, as children grow up, afresh group of leaders are needed. We know it takes a lot of energy anddedication from the adults involved – as some of our committee memberswill testify - but it’s a good chance for the youngsters of the neighbourhoodto meet up and have some fun.

We also have a small Pocket Park fund – for the play and picnic area behindNew Lea. When previously we suggested to the Parish Council paying fora new piece of play equipment we were told it would be our responsibilityand we would need to arrange separate insurance cover and maintenance. As this situation is unlikely to change and as the Parish Council have madesignificant efforts in the past 18 months to restore the Pocket Park, we havedecided to send them a cheque for £450 to help towards the provision ofmore outdoor play equipment.

Before our AGM we asked former members of the BCC, who had beenheavily involved in raising money for a larger recreational area, about themoney held in the Sports Field fund. We were asked to keep the accountseparate in case there is call for funds of a sporting nature. A few yearsback, there was a lot more emphasis on sporting activity in Badingham witha football club and the annual Inter-Village Games (against Dennington,Fressingfield, Laxfield etc). Again, it only takes the enthusiasm of a fewindividuals, so please speak up if you would like to get a project off theground.

The Maypole ClubWe warmly welcome all new and old residentsand visitors to our meetings.

We meet every second Wednesday in the month,8pm at Badingham Village Hall.

Great fun was had by all at the Maypole Christmas meal, held at the White Horse Pub. The food was lovely as usual- thank you Lisa and Mark.

Our next Maypole meeting is on the 10th February at the Vil-lage Hall, Badingham, at 8pm. This time Jen Woodhead willbe showing us how to make felt flowers.

Please come along. New members always welcome.

Last weekend the garden team plus extra help from Ben and NickNewton (many thanks for their hard work) removed all path matting andhave started preparing the path way for grass seed. We have for the lastfour years used bark chippings but came to the conclusion, as thechippings were no longer free, grassing the paths would be the best nextoption. We feel this would give a good neat look. Any visitors to thegardens beware it is muddy until the grass has been sown and is growing, please only enter if you need too. Hopefully the frost will break up the topsoil and we will rake over at the end of February and sow in March.

We have a plot available for anyone wishing to come and join the happygardens and gardeners! This year any excess produce will be sold at theCommunity Shop. Please do contact myself or Janet if you are interestedin this lovely spare plot.

The Maypole Club - how it all began

I thought it would be nice to start 2016 with memories of how the Maypole Clubfirst started.

The beginning of the club was suggested by several ladies in the village, whothought it would be a good idea to form a new club. The reason was that noteveryone thought the WI was not for them - fair enough.

A meeting was held on 27th October 1993 at the White House, home of BettyWilkinson (a WI Member) and Margaret Williams (also a WI member), who lived atthe Mission Hall, chaired the meeting. Several attended - some were WI members, others were not, but it was made clear the new club would not be run like the WIand nor should it affect its membership.  From what I remember, Rita Ruffles,Angela Clarke, possibly Ann Foster, and I were there – and several others whohave now moved away or passed on.

The club would be for all ages and should attract members from Badingham andsurrounding villages.

The aim was to provide  mostly social meetings, either at the Village Hall or amember’s house, for discussions, talks, demonstrations etc. Also to arrange socialevents and outings - to the theatre, cinema, museums, gardens, stately homes,Christmas shopping trips etc.

We thought ladies would like to come along to see what we were doing and enjoya chat over a cup of coffee of tea. It was also thought that the club could form agroup of ‘support friends’ for those in need of help or advice - emergency transport, help with aged parents or baby-sitting, a sympathetic ear to listen to problems. Ourvillage is excellent for this - you can always turn to someone. Not many villageshave this – it makes Badingham very special.

The Maypole Club would be non-religious and non-political. There would not be aformal committee, but it was thought to be advisable to have a MembershipCo-ordinator / Secretary and Treasurer and charge a Membership Fee of £5.

Doreen Green, then President of the Women’s Institute, frowned upon the ideaand did not agree for many years. However, some of the WI members joined in -and vice versa. They are two very different organisations and, in my mind, it’sgreat that we all come together, whatever it may be - above all to enjoy ourselves.

Our motto was decided at a later meeting: "Care, Share and Flare" with a maypolelogo – still used today on the Programme and reports in the Echo.

The Framlingham Weekly News, published from 1859 to 1939, is nowavailable to view online. All 4,154 editions are searchable by name andkeyword. A search of ‘Badingham’ found this article from 1937. If youwould like to search the papers, you can use the laptop at Fram library.

Celebrating the Coronation of King George VI and Queen ElizabethFramlingham Weekly News – 15 May 1937

‘Doing things well!’ Surely this is Badingham’s motto on every occasion of public rejoicing. An almost continuous downpour did not dampen the loyalty of the parishioners, who, led bymen who seem to have a real love for their parish, whether they be natives of it or it is theirhome by adoption, spent a day abundant in the real English festal spirit.

A carefully planned programme, drawn up by the committee, of which Mr R Carley waschairman, Mr H S Howard secretary and Mr R Wright sports secretary, was carried out infull. The deeply religious significance of the occasion was not forgotten, for on Sunday aCoronation Service was held in the Parish Church and conducted by the Rector (Rev E COakley), the collection being devoted to the Church Tower Repair Fund.

On the day, the jollifications were held in the picturesque grounds of the Old Rectory (bykind permission of Mr & Mrs Bridges-Adams). In an address the chairman first welcomedeveryone and mentioned the pride of Badingham people in their native village. They weregathered to celebrate the Coronation of the King and Queen, to whom, he expressed thehope, would be given a fair share of temporal beatitudes. Finally, Mr Carley thankedeveryone who had helped in any way to make the occasion a success, especially Mr andMrs Bridges-Adams, who were given hearty cheers.

After the singing of the National Anthem the sports commenced, these being interspersedby a munificent feed for the entire village in the gaily-decorated Parish Room. At 7.20 theMessages of Homage were heard by radio, after which His Majesty’s words were listenedto with rapt attention. At 10 o’clock a firework display brought to a happy ending a day which, though rainy, was full of happy memories. All the time a wireless installation provided theharmony. Householders, as well as children, received a souvenir mug. An oak tree (kindlygiven by Mr G Seggons) was planted in the ground of the Council School.

Sports included: 50 and 100 yards flat – for Under 7s, boys and girls, singlewomen over 16 (my age group!), married women. Wheelbarrow (inc a blindfoldversion), Sack, Bicycle, Potato, Skipping and Egg & Spoon races. There was also aFamily Relay, Half mile, High Jump and Long Jump and Ten-Pin competition. I seemy uncle John won one of the consolation prizes - along with K Dearing and RCarley. Let me know if you would like to see the full list of prize winners.

New Year’s Eve PartyThank you to Lisa and Mark for a fantastic New Years Eve charity dance in aid ofBadingham Village Hall Improvements. For those who were not there, youmissed a great evening. Many from the village supported the event andeveryone who went enjoyed themselves. It was lovely to see familiescelebrating together – young and not so young. Everyone danced!!

The Village Hall was nicely decorated with a Christmas Tree on the mantlepieceand an array of coloured lights - thank you to the Village Hall Committee for do-ing it.

Dancing was to 60s/70s music by Steve Perkins of Laxfield, some in fancydress.  The village, visitors and friends all came together; making newfriends. Badingham came alive due to the hard work of Lisa, Mark and theirhelpers.

The evening will be one that our family and Jack and Ryan’s friends will notquickly forget. So it brings me to say a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Lisa, Mark andtheir team.

From Sonja, Louise, Carl, Jack, Ryan, Sophie, Adam and Tom xx

SPEEDING IN THE VILLAGEDuring the Summer/Autumn period, there was a survey for speeding in thevillage carried out up Mill Road. I thankall those who kindly supported it. I amnow waiting to receive the report and canthen work on it. The Parish Council, High-ways and the Police will have a copy and,if need be, our MP.

Those who didn't think we needed yournames, we do. It is essential we have asmany names as we can and then moveon. BURNT OUT CARA call came to me about a burnt-out,white Peugeot 206 at Owl’s Green, Den-nington. This happened at 8pm on NewYear’s Eve. The number plates had beenremoved.  Police, Fire and Forensicofficers came out. They thought itpossibly a stolen vehicle from theBadingham /Halesworth area. If anyonecan help, contact 101 or myself.

FARMERS SCAM ALERTPlease be extremely wary of fraudstersspecifically targetting farmers’ EU grantpayments. The scam communicationstypically claim that fraud has beendetected on your bank account and thaturgent action is required to safeguardfunds. The victim is then persuaded todivulge personal or financial information,or even to transfer money directly into aso-called ‘safe account’.If you receive such a call or message, hang up the phone and do not replydirectly. Instead, wait five minutes andring your bank to alert them to the scam, using a phone number that you trust –such as the one on a bank statement orthe bank’s official website.Suffolk PCC Tim Passmore said “I knowthese payments can be crucial for theeconomic viability of your business, soplease do everything possible to protectyourself. If you suspect that you havebeen scammed you should inform yourbank immediately and also report it toAction Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk orby phoning 0300 123 2040”.

Montpellier to Hillman on Foot

Continuing the memoir of Brian Garratt’s walk across France in 2004. He washeading from Montpellier to Hillman - a German fortification captured by theSuffolk Regiment on D-Day - for the 60th anniversary.

Day 14: Started walking at 7.30 after being kept awake most of the night by anightingale in a tree almost above me. Nice going along the Allier valley withlunch at St. Ilpize reaching Brioude at 5.00. A long but rewarding day.

Day 15: Big buffet breakfast at the hotel before starting out at 9.00, reachingLempdes campsite at 12.00, enough walking for today as the heel blisters areback after yesterday’s effort.

Day 16: Started walking at 8.30 reaching Issoire at 1.30, only to find the camp-site a long way out of town, but at least there was a large supermarket close by.

Day 17: Started walking at 8.15 over the hills on the eastern side of the valleygiving me good views of the Puy de Sancy with lots of snow on the top. Lunchat Vie le Comte. Reached Les Martres campsite at 3.00.

Day 18: Started walking at 8.03. On reaching Pont du Chateau followed signs foran hour which had the picture of a tent and knife & fork on them, eventuallyreach the campsite at 12.30 and had lunch. Afterwards I went up to the bar andask if l could pitch my tent, he told me the campsite was not yet open thisseason. Asking where the next campsite would be, he handed me a piece ofpaper with something written on it, I said this is the campsite that I have justwalked from, he shrugged and turned to the next customer. I walked back intotown to find the only hotel. The landlady obviously did not like the look of thisdishevelled person and told me there was no room available. I walked onanother 8 kilometres, towelling myself down and putting on a fresh shirt beforereaching Gerzat at 4.45 - I could not risk being turned away anymore that day.

Day 19: Walked out of the hotel at 8.30 just as the Sunday market was being setup. I was the first customer at a fruit stall and on ordering two bananas theinstruction was passed along to the next man behind the stall in a very loudvoice who duly shouted it on to the boy on the end who acknowledged theorder and weighed them out and shouted back the bargain price which wasthen relayed back to the first man in an even louder voice. No one in Gerzat thatmorning could have failed to know the good value of bananas! I don't much likelarge towns but walking through Riom later that Sunday morning was a pleasureand after a brief stop I carried on, reaching Chatelguyon campsite at 2.00. A niceday after the disappointments of the previous one.

Page 26: B a d ingha E CHOmbadingham.onesuffolk.net/assets/Uploads/Home/About-us/...2016/02/01  · - no charge for children under 16 years Tickets from Ann - 638288, Carol - 638352, Tanya

Day 20: Started walking at 8.30. A very steep two hour climb out of Chatelguyon.Stopped for lunch at Manzat 12.30. Finally reached Chateauneufles Bains at 4.00,only to find that the campsite was in the grounds of the chateau a further 3kilometres north and arriving in a fairly shattered condition, I was treated verykindly and then given a tour round in a golf buggy by the lady of the estate.

Day 21: The weather is now getting very warm, started walking at 8.00 with astop for coffee at Evaux les Bains then on to Pionsat which turned out to bedisappointing. Looking at the map in the mornings before starting out, it isdifficult to know where the good stops will occur. I have walked through manyvillages without seeing a single person, yet there will be dogs barking and growl-ing at a dozen different gates, truly depressing places. Yet walk on ten kilometresand there is a real gem of a village with a little gravelled square and a couple ofbench seats under the trees, people who smile and speak at the bakers and thebar. What makes one place on the map so different from the next?

Day 22: Started walking 8.30. Going west today, which does not appear as muchgain on the map but is necessary and is a nice journey anyway. ReachedChambon sur Voueise campsite at 1.30.

Day 23: Started walking at 6.30. Good stops along the route, which makes such adifference, reached Boussac 2.30. A long hot day, but got nicely up the map.

Day 24: Started walking at 6.15. It rained on and off for most of the morning.Arrived at La Chatre at 2.00, with a very wet shirt, to find no campsite and wasturned away from the first two hotels. Needless to say both these hotels had thebig posh enamelled tourist sign beside the front door!

Day 25: Started walking at 8.15 and stopped for a good lunch at Ardentes.Reached the centre of Chateauroux at 5.00 but felt too tired to find the campsiteon the outskirts of the town so went into the hotel Voltaire. This was a luckymove, as the manager turned out to be a walker himself and I was given a verywarm welcome.

Farming CalendarNow it’s turning frosty and I’m looking out on fieldfares finishing off the windfallsunder the apples trees - the ones I had left because the Muntjac had alreadytaken a bite. Has anyone else seen the magnificent dark red deer stag that Ispotted on morning, proudly strutting across a field beside the High Road?According to the rain gauge, the wettest month of 2015 was July and now thewild plum blossom is out and the honeysuckle is trying to flower – what a topsy-turvy year. We’re waiting for a good, hard frost before we can get on the land.As the temperature has dropped, we’ve been able to switch the cooling fans onfor the wheat, to keep it in good condition. We saw last week how saturated theground is and the effects when we have a heavy rainstorm. The wheat is copingwith it but some people’s barley is looking rather yellow from too much wet. Butfear not, someone was telling me yesterday that it will soon turn dry and thenwe’ll be in for a long, hot spell. Not sure of the exact timings, so don’t get theBBQ out yet!

Dr Dan Poulter MPMember of Parliamentfor Central Suffolk and North Ipswich

I should like to wish you a happy NewYear and a peaceful and healthy 2016.

The start of a new year is always helpfulto reflect on priorities for the year aheadand I should like to tell you some of mine.In Parliament I am looking forward tocontinuing in my role as a member of theEnergy and Climate Change Committeeand playing my part in achieving abalanced energy policy and innovativefuture energy system for our country. Ishall also vigorously support theGovernment’s long-term approach toclimate targets and promote renewableand clean energy.

I was delighted to be elected recently asco-Chair of the All Party ParliamentaryGroup on Global Health and shall be con-tributing my experience as an NHS doctorto help to build on the achievements ofthis influential group in working to im-prove healthcare for the benefit of pa-tients both in the UK and elsewhere. Oneof my main priorities this year is to high-light the need for better mental healthprovision and a fairer deal for mentalhealth funding to support the dedicatedNHS staff that care for mental healthpatients.

Another of my priorities is to do my bestto promote employment particularly foryoung people. We have come a long wayin creating employment for young people

in Suffolk - there were only 90 claimantsaged 18-24 in Central Suffolk and NorthIpswich in November 2015 which was 65people lower than the previous year. Butthere is still more to do and I should liketo see more young people doingvocational courses and apprenticeships.

As co-Chair of the All Party ParliamentaryGroup on Carers I am determined to doall I can to support carers not only inSuffolk but also across the country. Thereare over 7 million unpaid carers in the UKand this will increase enormously duringthe next decade when the people need-ing care are expected to increase by 50%.Carers play an enormously important rolein many peoples’ lives and are often theunsung heroes of our community. Thisyear I should like to highlight the role ofyoung carers and how important it is tohelp to identify them and give them thepractical and emotional support that theyneed to ensure that they enjoy their livesand achieve just like their peers.

I am looking forward to meeting the chal-lenges of the year ahead and shall bereporting back regularly in this column.
