Church Cycle Ride

This year's Suffolk Churches Cycle Ride is on Saturday 14th September.Last year was very successful and I hope we can have another goodyear. Cyclists are sponsored for the number of churches they visit between9am and 5pm on that day. The money raised is shared equally between theSuffolk Historic Churches Trust and the cyclist’s nominated church.

This unfortunately clashes with the date for the Village Fete but I hope thisdoes not present too much of a conflict of interest. I hopethat we will still be able to have cyclists and people in thechurch to act as recorders.

Get in touch if you would like to join inGeoff Moore [email protected]

If you missed the Annual Parish Meeting, here are some tidbits from the reportsfrom the various village groups.

Sonia reported on the work of theParish Council – which includesPlanning, Highways and maintenance ofthe Pocket Park and verges. Organisedby Rob, a crab apple tree and morebulbs have been planted along LowStreet. £7,500 of Community Infrastruc-ture Levy funds, from The Meadowshousing development, is going towardsthe Village Hall refurbishment plans. When the PC investigated paintingdouble yellow lines by the White Horsejunction, they were told it would costclose to the same amount! Linda wasthanked for her 7 years’ service on theCouncil. There are still vacancies forcouncillors, for anyone considering therole. Volunteers are also needed to co-ordinate the Emergency Plan.

District Councillor Stephen Burroughesreported that the area he covers hasincreased to 30 villages – councillors arenow being encouraged to hold Skypemeetings. The County Council isbuilding a new special school and haspurchased a thermal patcher to repairpot holes. Despite the changing face ofSuffolk villages – less trade is rural areas, fewer involved in agriculture and moresecond (if not third) homes – he feelsthere is a good opportunity to repaircommunity spirit and offered supportfrom his locality funds.

Ian asked for news on a speed gun –Stephen said he would be willing tocontribute towards the equipment costbut did point out a volunteer group of10 members would be needed, as wellas police permission.

Duncan asked about the Badinghamsigns, which have fallen down at bothends of the village. Stephen said, unfortunately, these wouldn’t be treat-ed as a priority by Highways.

On behalf of the BCC, Pauline picked outthe well-attended Life Saving skillsevening and the hog roast in commemo-ration of 100 years since the end ofWWI as highlights of the year. Sheexpressed thanks for the great responseto the Fete open meeting and the LitterPick. There were also thanks for Tony,Ian and Malcolm for keeping an eye onthe defibrillator and to all involved inpreparation and delivery of the Echo.

Maypole continues to thrive as itcelebrates its 25th year with a livelygroup of 22 ladies enjoying a mixture ofevenings – talks and demonstrations, aswell as the annual BBQ, car treasurehunt, party and Christmas meal.

Dawn, Chair of Badingham Playschool, reported how they have been using theScout Hut in Framlingham on Tuesdays, allowing the Village Hall to be used byothers. While in town they have takenthe children to visit the fire station, castle and Mills Meadow care home.

The report from the Church included awelcome for the new rector, MartinPercival. The PCC expressed theirgratitude to the many volunteers whotake care of the church and churchyard.

Malcolm, on behalf of Meg, explainedhow the Gardening Club continues toflourish – as informal as ever. Aroundtwelve members meet on the after-noon of the first Thursday of the monthto enjoy tea and cake as they lookaround each other’s gardens.

Ian was pleased to announce that theVillage Quiz had already raised £634with two to go for the current run – thequiz takes a break in August andSeptember. He thanked the regularquiz masters for giving their time andMark and Lisa for providing the venue.

Tony spoke about the defibrillator, saying paediatric pads had beenpurchased, and he had organised for aFirst Responder to give instruction, buthe has yet to hear back from Playschool.

Badingham Shop and Café has nowbeen running for three years, and istrying new opening hours and a newmenu of cakes, coffees, tea and snacksto bring in more custom. There was acall for more helpers to join the rota ofnine regular volunteers.

Duncan reported on the Badingham &Dennington Bell Ringers and called foranyone interested in becoming a ringerto have a go. As well as ringing for aSunday service each week, bells hadbeen rung for weddings, Remembrance, the Beacon Event and in solidarity withNotre Dame.

Duncan also said “the more the merrier”for Table Tennis on Monday eveningsin the Village Hall. Any age, any stand-ard, it is open to everyone.

Barking Dogs Nuisance

A concerned villager writes:People choose to live in Badingham for the peace and tranquility of thecountryside. Sadly, this peace and tranquility is being slowly eroded by theincreased and constant barking of dogs.Dogs are one of the most rewarding pets to own but owners have responsi-bilities and must not allow their dogs to spoil residents right to peace andquiet. In many cases, dog owners are oblivious to the upset their barkingdogs cause, but the noise decibels are high. It’s a matter of respect for others’quality of life.Dog owners, please don’t let your pleasure be painful to others.

BADINGHAMNEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHSonja Russell,Head Co-OrdinatorTel: 01728 638268Email: [email protected]

Badingham seems pretty quiet and let’shope it remains so but there have beena couple of issues concerning villagerslately.

Dog MessIn a caring and considerate communitylike Badingham, it’s unbelievable wehave to put up with people who justthink of themselves and nobody else. Itis selfish behaviour, leaving dog messfor other people – and children – to walkin, or worse. We will be seeking adviceand taking action – don’t let this contin-ue to happen. If you can identify the dogowners who are allowing their dogs tofoul this village please make a note asfollows and give to me to pass on to theauthorities. Date, time and location Type of dog involved Name and address of person

Fishing on Private PropertyAlthough the landowner kindly allows aPublic Footpath to go past his pond, itdoes not allow people to go fishingwhen they wish, leaving an awfulamount of litter, such as empty tin cans, lids half off ,and bottles. Please do notfish unless you have permission of thelandowner – also, anyone fishingrequires a licence.  NHW has theregistration number of vehicle involved.

Operation WykenPolice officers using a HGV to patrol theA11, A12 and A14 have issued TrafficOffence Reports to 313 drivers andamassed £36,150 in fines. The officerwas able to get a better view from hiscab of drivers without seatbelts, usingmobile phones and other offences.

Cash Machine TheftsTwo brothers from Walthamstow werejailed for 11 thefts from cash machinesin Suffolk, Norfolk and also inBournemouth. The local thefts were un-covered after the men had beencharged with five offences in Bourne-mouth and chose to work withofficers  from Suffolk Constabulary’sOperation Converter TIC unit. The menare now enjoying their stay in HMP;hopefully they have learnt their lesson. This is another example of how OPConverter is a very effective way ofgiving offenders the opportunity to admitto further crimes.

I was away at the time of the AnnualParish Meeting on 31st May, pleasesee my report on the next page.

If you need me, give me a call or email.

Take care,Sonja

BADINGHAM NHW REPORT2018 – 2019 (27 Years of NHW)

In the year since my last report, 21incidents were reported. Some wereposted on social media, passed ontome from coordinators. All reports weredealt with promptly – mainly shedbreak-ins. The first week of Octoberwas hectic with two burglaries followedby a third break-in and an illegal raveplanned for Bruisyard Wood. After NHWalerted the police and the owner, it wasstopped.

Nottingham Knockers (door-to-doorsales) claiming to belong to a prisonrehabilitation scheme were busy inBadingham - trying to sell cheap qualitygoods but likely to be eyeing up yourproperty for later. Do NOT buy fromthese people. Another was sellinggravel from the back of a truck; caughtred handed and sent off.

Other issues were cowboy  gardenersasking for inflated fees and dronescausing a nuisance in the village.Pension scams, DVLA scams, BTscams, Microsoft scams – the list goeson and on - be wary of such calls.

At present NHW, along with the Police, are keeping their eyes and ears open toan emerging crime pattern of agri-cultural machinery thefts carried out indaylight hours. So far it hasn’thappened in Badingham but please re-port anything that looks suspicious –better to be cautious. We can get incontact with the owners if you do notknow them personally.

Dog fouling is still a big problem despitethere being Poo Bins for people to use.The churchyard faces this problem –how disrespectful – and footpathswhere children walk.

There are still issues with roadsideparking in Low Street, especially carscoming from Framlingham direction andmeeting cars parked too close to thejunction by the White Horse.  Therehave been many near misses – I, forone.

Of the 228 properties in Badingham, 8are holiday homes. 16 have changedhands in the past year. These figures donot include The Meadows; NHW lookforward to meeting the new occupantsand welcoming them to our village.

We still need someone to co-ordinatethe Bowling Green Road area. JennieCollins kindly helps me but we do needsomeone to come forward.  Likewise,we will need someone to cover the areaaround The Meadows, where there willbe 10 new properties, to support thepresent co-ordinators for Mill Road.

My warmest thanks go to all our co-ordinators and their partners, withoutwhom NHW would not work.  Also toJennie, Tish and my hubby anddaughter, Geoff and Louise, whosesupport is always most welcome andappreciated.

Be safe, Sonja

Badingham Village Hall AGM was heldon 16th July 2019 and it was a greatpleasure to welcome many friendsand supporters of the village hall.

All of the committee are trusteeswhether elected from the Parish, appointed by the Parish Council, Com-munity Council or Parochial ChurchCouncil or representing a regular userof the hall. It has been an eventful butpositive year during which the villagehall committee has met regularly. Thevillage hall is a much loved andvaluable asset for Badingham in manyways, providing an amenity forresidents and non-residents at a lowerthan average cost. This is in line withthe hall’s charitable status whichrequires the provision of a communityfacility for all sectors of the community.

Regular activities such as kurling, table tennis and meetings of theParish Council, Community Counciland other groups have continued aswell as occasional bookings. The Play-school continue to be able to use thehall four and a half days a week withone afternoon a week set aside fordaytime adult activities.

However positive our activities are, theCommittee are realistic in recognisingthat despite continued maintenanceand repairs, some parts of the Hall arein desperate need of renovation. Inresponse we have set up a village halldevelopment project and have startedto raise funds to complete theseessential improvements in stages, starting with the kitchen area. Plansare at an early stage with quotes tocome in from contractors.

Making applications to appropriatefunding sources is ongoing andprudent and effective financial controlby our Treasurer has enabled theCommittee to set aside a restrictedfund for renovations. This, togetherwith a significant contribution from theParish Council, other fund raisingactivities and a very much appreciatedresident’s donation has resulted in therenovation fund reaching just over£12,000 to date. Details as follows:

Parish Council £7490Donation £100Quiz nights £164Waitrose CF £280VHC £4000 Total £12034

On behalf of the committee, I wouldlike to sincerely thank all those thatuse the hall, those that provide for itsupkeep and those that have contribut-ed to the renovation project. The Hallmay be small but it requires a big jointeffort to run it successfully and weneed the assistance of volunteers tosupport the continued work ofcommittee members.

We are appealing for help to run thehall and with the renovation project.Professionals are engaged whenrequired but many small maintenancetasks could be completed byvolunteers from the community andany equipment loaned helps withcosts. If you can spare some time, now and again, to help it will be muchappreciated.

Thank you to everyone, Shirley

We recentlysaw four Fallow deer walking down the tramline of the field beyond the Priory, heading towards Ubbeston. They stopped and looked at the car, their headsabove the ears of wheat, before heading on their way.

Dr Dan Poulter MPMember of Parliament

for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich

Undoubtedly, the best part of my week iscoming home to Suffolk on a Thursdayevening and leaving behind all the stressesand pressures of a week in Parliament, notto mention the congestion.

Returning home to Suffolk makes me reallyappreciate all that is special about thiscounty – its rural character, great sense ofcommunity spirit and vibrant market towns.Indeed only a few weeks ago we celebratedthe 3rd ever Suffolk Day – showcasing allthat is great about this wonderful county.

I have also enjoyed meeting so manyvisitors and residents taking time out toenjoy our fantastic local fetes and othercommunity events. It takes a great effort bywilling volunteers to pull these eventstogether and, on the whole, we have beenblessed with perfect summer weather toenjoy them. For me, it’s the perfect oppor-tunity to meet and talk to many people whilstalso stocking up on local Suffolk produce.

Here in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich,we are incredibly lucky to have a number ofbustling market towns, all surrounded byrolling countryside and Suffolk’s famouswide-open skies. Indeed, Our natural land-scape has inspired writers, artists andmusicians for centuries – Constable,Munnings and Britten to name a few and,of course more recently, Framlingham’svery own Ed Sheeran.

With such a vibrant, growing economy, andconnections to London, the Midlands and

beyond, it’s no wonder that so many majorbusinesses and small rural start-ups arechoosing to make Suffolk their home.

One of the reasons that so many of uschoose to live in Suffolk is because of itsrural heritage and our beautiful countryside, and whilst we would all agree that we needan appropriate level of small scale develop-ment and affordable homes to help supportyoung families to continue to live and workin Suffolk, none of us wants to see ourcountryside destroyed by inappropriateover-development.

Planning is, of course, a local matterdecided by our local councils. Whendeciding planning policy and where thereshould be new businesses and homes, it’simportant that our local councils take anevidence based approach and alwaysprioritise brownfield sites over building onthe countryside. That is why it is soimportant for our local councils to make surethey have a local development frameworkand supply plan in place, to discourageinappropriate development.

I will continue to work closely with our localcouncillors to ensure that we protect therural nature and integrity of Suffolk’s townsand villages and will always stand up for thebest interests of local residents in fightinginappropriate planning applications.

DENNINGTON CEP SCHOOLIn the Easter term, Chaffinches had their first school trip toEaston Farm Park, while Robins were learning all about farmingand where our food comes from. The Wrens attended a ‘GrowYour Own Potatoes’ event in Ipswich and Swallows studied theKings and Queens of England.Year Six children got to grips with revision and have taken their SATs. Thechildren were also out and about, singing at Snape and reciting poetry atSudbury theatre. On behalf of FODS, Veronica Thomas purchased a set of lovely hoodies forthe school sports teams; to keep the children warm and looking smart whenthey go out to sports events. The FODS Easter Quiz raised £300 for theschool and more fund raising is planned to go towards iPads. FODS alwayswelcomes new members and volunteers for events. In other fundraising news, The Dennington Queen’s donation pot on the barraised an amazing £133 for Elmer, who is now on display in Ipswich with thechildren’s map of Dennington on him.
