The ECHO is produced for the villagers of Badinghamby the Badingham Community Council

Registered Charity No. 274549

The Echo welcomes items for publication but we reserve the right to edit. While every effort is made to check information published, the BCC does notendorse the accuracy or reliability of any article or advert within the magazine. We may not be able to publish everything we receive for each issue – priorityis given to dated village events. E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorAccording to Alan Titchmarsh, cow parsley is the “height of garden fashion”and with it you can “bring your border to life with swirling clouds ofcreamy-white flowers”. Which I’m pleased about, as I can sit here writingthis and ignore what’s swirling all around in the garden!

Do we have some green-fingered residents who could share somegardening advice in the Echo? First question, what should we do with abay tree? I’m guessing it needs a bit more pruning than the leaves Igrabbed on Christmas Day to flavour the bread sauce!

What else would you like to see featured in the Echo? I’m always open toideas. You’ll find me on the Tombola stall at the fete. Yes, it’ll soon be timeto hang out the bunting again. Please come along if you are around - bringyour running shoes if you fancy entering the bale race!

Thanks to all our advertisers who are a big help towards the productioncosts of the Echo. I am conscious that we are getting several half pageadverts which are filling up the magazine, so we might need to think againabout space and advertising rates.

In the meantime, please keep sending me your news and I’ll try my best tosqueeze it all in.

Best Wishes and Good Health, Tish

Some of you may be aware of the sad lossof my two nephews, Micheal and Liam, ina tragic motorcycle accident almost 3years ago. As a result of the fantastic jobdone by the EastAnglian Air Ambulanceon that night, as a family we are doing ayear of fund-raising for them.

My effort is to have a garden fete and we would love to see as many ofyou as possible. There will be all the usual stalls - and anything else wecan come up with before the day. What we raise at the fete, BarclaysBank will match up to £1,000 so all donations would be grateful received.

Please come and support this very worthwhile cause, Celia

Buzzards havebecome well-established around here in the past few years. Suffolk Wildlife Trusttell us: “Listen out for their cat-like, 'kee-yaaa' calls as they soar in high circlesover grassland, farmland and woodlands. Buzzards eat small birds, mammals andcarrion, but will also eat large insects and earthworms when prey is in shortsupply”.

Dr Dan Poulter MPMember of Parliament

for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich

I always enjoy my regular meetings withlocal businesses and voluntary organisa-tions in our area, many of whom dependupon volunteers to carry out their work. Here in Suffolk I see examples everyweek of a proud tradition of volunteeringwhich is underpinned by a unique senseof community spirit.I was therefore very pleased to be invitedto the Framingham Rotary Club and hearabout the excellent work that they havebeen doing, especially in volunteering forthe ‘Hour Community’ service project. This project puts vulnerable people incontact with tradesmen who are able togive their skills for an hour or so to assistwith work on essential utilities such asplumbing, electricity and the installationof smoke detectors, free of charge. Itwas also good to hear that a bus servicefrom Framlingham to Ipswich Hospital isbeing provided by the project three timesa week and that a befriending service isbeing initiated to help carers in the localarea.I would also like to pay tribute to theRotary organisation in this their Jubileeyear and all the dedicated volunteers notonly in Suffolk but across the countrywho give up so much of their time to helpthose who are in less fortunate circum-stances than their own. In the UK thereare an estimated 15.2 million people who

volunteer at least once a month and 23.1million who volunteer at least once ayear. I hope that this number willincrease and that the strong communityspirit that flourishes in Suffolk willcontinue to do so.On Friday of last week I spent the daywith the Suffolk Police as part of myparticipation in the Parliamentary policescheme that I am very much enjoying. Ihave received some valuable feedbackon the way that the Police in Suffolkworks and how other organisationslinked with the Police, such as the Inde-pendent Police Complaints Commission, work and operate with the public. For myprogramme last week I joined the mentalhealth team in carrying out their dutiesand was full of admiration for the workthat they do. There is a team of 16people attached to Suffolk Police thattake a holistic approach to people withmental health issues. They liaise withhousing services and the NHS in tryingto best support patients with mentalillnesses and I am fully supportive of theirwork and will help in any way that I can.To see me at an advice bureau call01728 726 588 or [email protected].

LOCKAlways keep your house secure, evenwhen you are at home. Keep doorslocked and windows shut – includingyour back gate.

STOPIf someone knocks at the door, stop andthink if you are expecting a visitor. If not,do not feel under any obligation toanswer the door, even if the caller hasseen you.CHAINAlways put the chain on the door beforeyou answer it, even if you are expectinga caller. It gives you more control overthe conversation and also makes it muchharder for someone to force their way in.It is fine to say something like ‘Thank youfor letting me know. I will contact mybuilder right away’ and then shut andlock the door.CHECKü Always ask for a photo id card and takeyour time to check it, even if expectingthe caller. FIVE MEN NETTEDBack in February 1995, an observantvillager was suspicious of the behaviourof a driver of a dirty white transit van andwatched his movements around threehouses in Low Street. He phoned meand I contacted the owners, questioningwhether they had seen the van and howmany people were in it. The owner of thelast property had had a man, with anorthern accent, call round selling fish.fRemembering police reports from theprevious spring, we knew the policewere on the lookout for a set up fitting thesame description. I immediately calledthe police - everything was all systemsgo.  Terry Marsh, our co-ordinator wholived at Wayside, Low Street worked withme. He was off towards Dennington likelightning. I went up the A1120, butneither of us could find them. I returnedhome, leaving Terry looking elsewhere;keeping in touch with me and the police. The police finally found them inBramfield.  My sincere thanks went tothose who helped and gave the alarm. Ican vividly remember the adrenalin andexcitement - the phone was hot. Thepolice were so efficient (I hope theywould be the same nowadays) and to becalled "Sonja" and thanked was soreassuring. The arrests would not havehappened without the help of villageresidents - who, I think, all deserve anOBE.

Please everyone, keep your eyes openat all times - by working together wecan keep this parish safe.

Thank you, Sonja

Here is the last instalment of Brian Garratt’s memoir of his walk from the Medto Normandy for the 60th anniversary of D-Day in 2004. Brian worked as acabinet maker in Low Street, close to the Village Hall. Thanks to Marlis andfamily for sharing this story in the Echo over the past few months.

Day 35The lowest point of the whole walk. After three nights of solid rain I havedecided to reduce the carrying weight and do the last hundred miles with B&Bs.This is a difficult decision and I am not happy about it, but I have lost quite a lotof body weight and the rucksack is now noticeably heavier with the dampnessof some of my gear. So at 6.15 I walk out of the campsite in the rain leaving mycarefully packed tent, sleeping bag and foam mat neatly stacked by the gate. Icould not even find a dustbin to give them a decent burial. I had carried thesefor five hundred miles and they had been my refuge for many nights. I cannothelp but feel this is a mistake. After an hour of walking I am surprised to find abar open, I go in and order a coffee. The landlady is eating her breakfast at oneof the tables and invites me to join her. With the aid of my map and hertelephone directory, we sort out hotel telephone numbers for the rest of thejourney. As I walk out, I am just amazed how kind and helpful she was to a totalstranger. Reaching Mortagne au Perche after five hours in the rain, I am not ofan acceptable standard for the first hotel. As I walk out again past the highlypolished Tourist Hotel de France sign, I realise it is all that it implies - it is forhighly polished tourists. Luckily the next hotel accepts me quite happily.

Day 36Started walking at 7.30. A good stop at Moulins la Marche, reached Ste.Gauburge at 2.00. Booked into Auberge du Valbureois, a place with an excellentchef - result, a very good evening meal. Just as well I did not live this lifestyle allthe way up from Montpellier!

Day 37Started walking at 7.30 a good stop at Gace but another long trek after that toreach Vimoutiers at 4.00. Armed with my list of hotels, I asked the landladywhere I had just booked in if she would ring ahead for me for the next night. Tomy dismay, she could not find a room within thirty miles of the coast becauseof the D-day celebrations. I went to the Information Centre, only to get thesame result. I expect my tent was still stacked beside the gate at Belleme. Whata shame! I seemed to be on the edge of a great canyon that I could not crosswithout the help of public transport.

Day 38Got the 7.00 bus to Lisieux and then the train to Caen, not quite what I hadplanned. I had expected to walk into the landing area via Pegasus Bridge. Sowalking from Caen station at 9.30, I reached the Royal Norfolk memorial at thecrossroads above Hillman about 1.00, only to find that the batteries in my camerahad gone dead. Unbelievable bad timing! I carried on to Hillman, arriving just intime to find a party of students getting back on their coach. Rushing up to theteacher I explained my dilemma, with the result that everything ended very well.

As a 15 year old apprentice I had worked with someone who had been here sixtyyears ago with the 1st Battalion Assault pioneers, carrying a beehive [anexplosive charge on two legs which had to be placed against the offending objectand set off]. Mercifully he survived the ordeal. It is a tribute to the skill andprofessionalism of the C.O. at the time that so many were able to walk away. 25years earlier in France similar objectives cost hundreds of lives. After morephotos with a detachment of the R.A.M.C. they kindly took me to the port ofOuistreham to catch the ferry to Portsmouth.

Farming CalendarEverywhere trees and hedges are bursting into blossom and leaf. A period of drierweather has meant we’ve finally managed to get on with land work – some of itmonths behind schedule.Wheat crops have been slow to develop and have suffered stress – yes, it’s notjust us who suffer from wet and a lack of sunshine! One of Grandad’s sayings wasyou’d always find a ear of wheat by the Suffolk Show – it will take some searchingthis year. After going into a poor seedbed, caused by last August's heavy rain, the rapeseedhas pulled itself around in places. In other patches it’s best to avert the eyes – theplant never managed to get established and the rabbits and pigeons have beenfeasting on it ever since. The beans were planted late but, fingers-crossed, they are fairing a lot better thanlast year. They have a lot of growing still to do. Some people are saying crops willbe two weeks behind come harvest but sunshine, warmth and light showers cansoon make a world of difference. We'll have to wait and see.
