Midweek’s Apache Lake tournament is officially in the books. Twenty-Five boats fished with the same partners contending for the biggest two-day weight total. With the help of Dick Kirberg, I managed my first club victory, yippee! The weather was near perfect, cool at night and sweatshirts in the AM, and many even got to witness a Blood Moon on Tuesday night. Most of the anglers were at the lake on Monday to prefish, and many camped at the Burnt Corral camp area. Over 40 men enjoyed the Tuesday night barbeque of burgers and brats, thanks to our grill master Gary Asmus who once again did an outstanding job on the grill. There is nothing like a good, free meal to get everyone together and hear all the great stories of the day. Sean Ballard and Jack Hughes shared pictures of some bighorn sheep they saw on the lake. Bill McGonigle was brave enough to get a picture of a rattlesnake swimming across the lake. Former member John Majersky and his sidekick Charlie even stopped by for a visit. My hat is off to our guys for making the newer guys feel so welcome at the dinner. It was good to see the Bass Pro boys again, Chad Schimmel and Steve Harbaugh, who hosted a Tuesday night poker tournament for 8 players. Probably the funniest story of the event had to do with Jamie Shaw, who had made arrangements to pick up his partner at the dock Monday at 9 AM to prefish. Jamie arrived early and decided to fish a couple of hours. When 9 AM rolled around he motored to the docks where an angler had his tackle stacked at the end of the dock. Jamie pulled up and loaded both the angler and the gear, and they enjoyed a great day of pre-fishing together. It was only during roll call on tournament morning the following day that it was discovered that Jamie actually had picked up the wrong angler at the dock; you see Howard Thomas also had planned to pick up his partner at the dock at 9 AM to prefish. I think Bill Daddario benefited the most from this mix-up, getting to fish with both Jamie and Howard. Tom “The Toolman” Alauria was able and willing to help me re-attach my broken transducer to my trolling motor; I owe him a roll of duct tape for that one. Howard Thomas snapped a critical support bolt on his trailer, for which Tom had a spare in his box of a thousand bolts. What a lifesaver, thanks Tom. It was good to welcome Ron Chambers back to the club; thanks for making the overnight tackle run Ron. I would especially like tothank the board members forthe time and sacrifice theymake for these tournaments sowe all can have a great time.Next month’s tournament is atLake Roosevelt, we will belaunching out of Cholla Ramp(pronounced choi-ya - Jack)instead of Windy Hill. DwayneSteel and his wife Beverly willbe hosting a barbeque at theHiWay 188 Tackle Store inTonto Basin on the Tuesdayevening before the tournament.See you there.

“Wind, wind go away, all thefishermen want to play.” Thatthought was probably on the

minds of most competitors atthis month’s tournament. Theblowing wind made thingsdifficult to find and catch bass.Boat batteries were drawndown to either minimum orzero power levels the first dayof this two day event.

OK enough of that. Lets hearfrom the winners who providedafter action reports from thiswindy tournament.

Taking home 1st Place, TeamGary Grimes & Dick Kirbergweighed the winning creel often bass weighing 26.42 lbs.

Gary Grimes: I fished withDick Kirberg at my first clubtournament at Roosevelt Lakeback in 2009, and rememberfondly how much he helpedme. He introduced me to thedrop-shot rig since I only knewhow to throw one bait, whichwas a crank bait, so it isalways a good time when weget drawn together.

His years of knowledgeproved very helpful at ApacheLake as we searched forproductive areas to fish. Hewould tell me, “Try this spotover here, me and Denny didreal well here back in ’89.” Itseemed like he had a story forevery spot on the lake.

We concentrated our efforts inthe areas between Burnt Corraland the Apache Lake Marina. Istarted the morning fishing theareas around tulles and points;I was throwing reaction luresand Dick worked plastics, but

nothing was biting. We made amove to our next spot ‘X’,where Dick masterfully landeda nice 4.3 lb largemouth on aTexas rig in about 15 feet ofwater. We continued to movearound throughout the day, picking one up here and there, changing up our bai tsdepending upon the prevailingwind speed, with most of ourtime concentrated withinMatazal Bay. We did not have alimit until 1 PM, and it was apoor limit at best. We returnedto an area within the bay thatwe had previously fished, andapparently the fish were finallyready to eat. We were boththrowing Carolina rigged crawbaits, and caught three nicerfish which helped us cull oursmaller fish.

It was not an easy day fishing,as the bites were far and fewbetween, but we had enoughweight for a third place on dayone, which put us in contentionif we could find fish on day two.

Dick Kirberg: Before I get intohow Gary and I caught our fishon day 2, I would like to sharethis info. This will be the thirdtime Gary and I fished together.

The first time was in 2009 andI was Gary's boater. This washis first tournament in MidweekBass. I met him at the TontoBasin Inn. He owned two rodsand primarily threw crank baitsalong the shore. He caught hisfirst smallmouth bass on aZara Spook. He also stated hedid not know how to dropshot. Itold him we would do this laterin the day, so I showed himhow to rig one. We proceededto catch lots of fish in the 25-30foot depth range. After thetournament I dropped him offat the motel, and he wanted toknow if he could take a showerbefore driving home. I thoughtto myself after he fishes a fewtimes, he will be eager to gostraight home after fishing.

Now day 2 of this week’stournament: We started outgoing to our last spot fromTuesday. We spent about 11/2 hrs there with no bites. Wewere using Carolina rigs withg r e e n p u m p k i n Z o o mSuperhogs - no takers. So wewent to a place we fished onTuesday where I caught ourbig fish. He caught a 10 inchsmallmouth, our first fish. Wenow moved to our third spot. Itwas a rocky point with reedsclose by, same story, no fish.Gary said we need to make arun, so we headed back toBurnt Coral ramp. We fishedthe hump by the ramp. Wewere still Carolina riggingSuperhogs. I got my first bite, but no fish. Gary caught our

It was now close to 11 o'clock.I said we need to try anotherspot, so I took him to a spotthat has always been good forme. It is a shore with manysmall rocks on the bottom. Itwas 11:10 and he caught ourfourth keeper. He stated weneeded one more for a limit. Ihad 2 more bumps, but no fish.We started working the shoreline keeping the boat in 14 feet, and he found three fish on hissonar. I changed my Carolinarig to a green pumpkin chiggercraw. He caught our 5th fish.We continued to work the 14foot depth and I hooked upwith a 3 lb. smallie, culled ourfirst fish. I then caught our bigfish for the day, a 3.4 lb.largemouth, culled anotherfish. He then caught anotherculler; we now went back to thespot where we saw the threefish earlier, another culler. Wemoved a little further, and hecaught another culler.

make it tough to run the boat. Before I say anything else Ihave got to recognize NeilBurns as one of the bestfishing partners to share a boatwith. The only thing that wouldimprove Neil as a partner is ifhe would say something whenhe has a bass on the hook andis reeling him in; Neil is thequietest catcher of fish I haveever fished with and I got towatch his silent catchingtechnique a lot during the twotournament days.

On Tuesday, just about all ourdamage done to the bass wasdone with drop shot rigs. I wasthrowing Morning Dawn with achartreuse tail and Neil used aBitchin Craw Roboworm. Neilout caught me about three toone with his worm. Neil hadgreat faith in a jerk bait hethrew at various times throughout the tournament; however, only one bass took that lure.

crew running the tournamentGood job as usual!

It was a great time fishing andcamping with Mr. Royal. Thefishing for Apache seemed tobe a little tough for this time ofyear. It was a struggle to findgood fish on beds and the postspawn fish did not seem to bevery hungry. I believe all thefish we weighed were caughton a drop shot rig.

Mark Royal: This was mysecond time fishing with Steve. The first time was Havasu ayear ago and was my firsttournament. I learned a bunchthat first tournament with Steveand continued my educationthis time out.

We fished mainly in coves bythe dam and in the areasaround Turtle Rock. We threwchatterbaits, spinners, swimbaits, a frog, drop shot and an8 inch Huddleston. Stevehooked one on the frog andanother two fish were caughton a spinnerbait, but themajority of our fish were caught

either off beds or with dropshots. The first day we foundan area to fish that I thoughtwas a great spot where the fishwere moving across. Thesecond day the wind calmeddown and we saw that the"great spot" was just an areawhere there were a lot of beds.I caught our 2nd place big fishon a drop shot reaper inshallow water - likely off of abed that we could not see. Sothe first day we fished beds wecould not see, and the secondday we fished beds that wecould see.

Steve had some great bearhunting stories – I especiallyliked the story about a clientthat took off his clothes towade across a stream only tofind that the bear they wereafter was on the side they justleft – the client got the shot offwith clothes off, and thenwaded naked back into thestream to have his picturetaken because no one wouldbelieve him.

Our goal is to launch at safelight, but some lakes haveramps whose design orcondition really slow the launchdown. When that happens, wewait until all the boats have beensuccessfully launched before westart. We do not, however, holdup the launch for a single boatthat may have had difficultiesgetting started. In that case, thetournament begins when ready, and the boat that had problemslaunches when able.

Catching was much slower onthe second tournament day,but we did manage to weigh alimit of fish. Our best bass –which turned out to be the 1st

Well another tournament is inthe books and what a specialtournament it was. From theunsolicited comments I havereceived it is obvious themembers enjoyed the two dayformat, location, and quality offishing. Just think we haveApache again in Octoberwhich will be a time of the yearthat the club has never fishedApache. It should be great.

The Apache tournament alsoreminded us that as hotweather approaches we haveto take special attention tokeeping ourselves and our fishhealthy as we fish theupcoming warmer months ofthe years. You will bereceiving more and moreinformation as the weatherheats up.

Our next tournament will be atRoosevelt. Dwayne Steel andhis wife Beverly will be hostingthe annual steak cookout atthe Hwy 188 Tackle Store inTonto Basin. They have boths u p p o r t e d t h e c l u boutstandingly, especially at theend of the year banquet, andare the primary reason we giveaway such outstanding prizes. If you need an extra roll of lineor a special Roosevelt lurewhy not get it from Dwayneduring the BBQ, you will besurprised how competitive hisprices are with Bass Pro andCabela’s. This will be a goodtime for members to show theirappreciation for their supportof the club.

that morning that may havehelped our efforts, but that'sfishing. The rest of the day westruggled to even get a bite. Iwas concerned that the lack ofwind would change things forus and we wouldn't figure outhow to adjust our pattern. Myconcerns proved right, but wedid well enough to hold out forfifth place. Congrats to thewinners and those that placedahead of us.

Howard Thomas & BillDaddario Crank a CatFor Goon Fish Prize

Howard Thomas: I never inmy wildest dreams would havethought you could catch acatfish on a crankbait; butthat’s what happened.

We were working the bank aswe always do when he hit. All Ican say is they put up a greatfight and I wished it was abass fighting that hard. BillDaddario was fun to fish withand he is a master at crankbait f ishing. I learnedsomething by watching himand I'm sure you can too if youget picked to fish with him.

and I got to enjoy the comfortsof Don's camper. It was truly apleasure to fish with Don andtalk about the good ole dayswhen it didn't hurt so much tofish. Thanks Don.

Monday we just went fishinglooking for some sort of patternto go on. We didn't catch manyfish, but we learned where andhow we were going to fish.

Tuesday morning we started onthe south bank of the main lakejust west of the marina boatramps. Don caught a beautiful3.5 lb largemouth before the sunwas fully up. We then moved tothe north bank and proceeded tocatch three more nice qualityfish. Further down the bank andinto a large cut, Don caughtanother 3.5 lb LM. It was 9:15and we had a limit of about 13.5pounds.

Don was throwing a pumpkinSenko wacky rigged and Idecided to let Tuesday's windhelp me drag a drop shot rigbehind the boat. Don wastargeting the light colored waterin the shallows and I kept mymorning dawn Roboworm in thedarker, deeper water right off thedrop offs in around ten to twelvefeet of water. We caught severalmore fish that day, making oneupgrade.

Wednesday we started in thesame area on the south side, but with no good results. Wethen went to the northern bankline and proceeded to put five inthe box in short fashion. Thequality of the fish were not thesame as Tuesday, but it wasnice to have a limit at 8:30 in themorning. Both of us lost a fish
