THINGS YOU CAN DO TO AVOID GETTING SICK

D E P A R T M E N T O F S T U D E N T A F F A I R S | 3 1 S T . J A M E S A V E N U E , 2 N D F L O O R | ( 6 1 7 ) - 2 1 7 - 9 2 2 2

Cold and Flu season is upon us and at the worst possible time - the end of the semester! Everyone always

seems to get sick just in time for finals. The stress of studying and the lack of sleep from studying is ruining

your immune system, so here are some tips on how you can avoid getting sick.

Exercise. The weather is getting colder and the strength it takes to go outside is getting weaker. However,

taking just a short walk can dramatically better your chances of getting sick. And while people think going out

in the cold is how they get sick, its actually the best place to be. The cold air doesn’t allow illnesses to be

transmitted. So, put on your hat and coat and go for a little walk through town.

Catch some Z’s. Finding time to sleep can be tough this time of year, but it's crucial. Lack of sleep is one of the

best ways to land yourself a one-way ticket to sick town. You should be getting at least 7 hours of sleep a day or

your immune system will betray you. At this point in your college career, sleeping should be your favorite past

time anyway.

Wash your hands. Yes, this may seem incredibly obvious to most, however, a lot of people don’t. Washing

your hands regularly throughout the day can really improve your chances of avoiding a germ infestation.

Eat healthy. Just as finding time to sleep can be difficult, finding time to eat can also be difficult. A surprisingly

large amount of college students say they often “forget to eat” because they are too focused on studying.

Unfortunately, the lack of nutrition can send your body into shut down mode. Help yourself and eat

something with some nutritional value.

Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is important, even when you’re not worried about getting sick. The body

is about 60% water, which means you literally need water to survive. Water is also crucial to all major organs.

Do yourself a favor and protect your body from invading infections.

Avoid stress. Finals are right around the corner and the smell of fear is in the air. Avoiding stress is almost

impossible this time of year, but it is so important that the stress doesn’t take over your life. Find out ways you

can make finals less stressful.

Take care of your body and avoid getting sick. Eat a lot, sleep enough, and drink like a fish. Your mind, body

and final grades depend on you. Save the day and stop the spreading of infectious germs.
