Stations of the Cross Stations of the Cross will take place every Tuesday during Lent at

6:10PM, with the exception of March 20 and 27. Please join us for this

special prayer time.

World Day for Consecrated Life In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer for women

and men in consecrated life. This celebration is attached to the Feast

of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2. This feast is also

known as Candlemas Day, the day on which candles are blessed

symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in

consecrated life are called to reflect the Light of Jesus Christ. Today

pray not only for those priests and sisters from your past, but for

those living that life today. Parents, pray too for your children whom

God may be calling to the consecrated life. All you who may still be

searching where it is that God calls you, consider the consecrated

life. It truly is a “life worth living.” For information, contact Sister

Lucille Flores at 414-931-9654.

Join us at St. Bernadette Parish, 8200 W. Denver Ave., Milwaukee, as we spend three Sunday afternoons during Lent viewing a movie through the lens of faith, followed by discussion and prayer. The February 25 and March 4 movies will begin at 1:30 PM. The March 18 movie will begin at 1:15 PM due to length. Please note the two sets of ratings – one from the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) that is the standard for movie theaters, and one from CNS (Catholic News Service, an affiliated branch of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). CNS ratings are as follows: A-I: general patronage; A-II: adults and adolescents; A-III: adults; L: limited audience -- this classification is applied to movies that are too strong for an A-III but not sufficiently wayward to receive an O (morally offensive). Films that receive an “O” rating from CNS will not be considered for viewing at Faith and Film sessions. The first paragraph of each summary comes from the Catholic News Service review of each film. The second paragraph describes our focus for the post-viewing discussion. February 25: Oh, God! (1977 – MPAA rating PG; CNS rating A-III) California supermarket manager (John Denver) becomes a middle-class Moses when chosen by God (George Burns) to tell the world that he is alive and well. As might be expected, no one believes him and complications arise. The gentle comedy, written and directed by Carl Reiner, has its heart in the right place and provides some effective moments, Burns and Denver both being very appealing performers. Themes and focus: How do we find God’s presence in our world today without actually “seeing” Him? How do we recognize God’s call to us? How do we recognize God in others?

Page 5: B ST ERNADETTE · - February 11th pulpit announcements deadline: 12:00 Saturday, February 10, 2018 - First Communion preparation (parents and children), 9:00 to 10:00AM at St. Catherine

March 4: Love & Mercy (2014 – MPAA rating PG-13; CNS rating A-III) This profile of Brian Wilson, the driving force behind 1960s chart toppers the Beach Boys, evades a descent into sentimental gloss. Instead, director Bill Pohlad adopts an intelligent, steady approach to his subject, almost like that of a documentary. He focuses on lengthy scenes showing the young Wilson (Paul Dano) laboriously crafting his distinctive sound in recording studios. But, in an effort to avoid sensationalism, he also undoubtedly strips away uncomfortable details from the story of the troubled musician’s later life, during which he’s portrayed by John Cusack. Though Pohlad ducks explicit portrayals or discussions of the substance abuse that may have led to Wilson’s experience of auditory hallucinations, his film can be appreciated for its celebration of one star’s at least partially successful maneuvering through the moral minefield laid down by wealth and fame. Themes and focus: As Christians, what is our responsibility toward others in need? How do we recognize them? How can we better recognize and avoid the sins of greed and corruption? (It is important to note that, while biopics can and do take artistic liberties with storytelling, this particular film was made with full approval from Brian and Melinda Wilson.) March 18: The Shawshank Redemption (1994 – MPAA rating R; CNS rating L – please note that this film was given the “L” rating from the CNS SOLELY for large amounts of strong language, due to the film’s prison setting) Gritty prison drama begins in 1946 when a quiet banker (Tim Robbins) is wrongly convicted of murder, then spends the next two decades inside a brutal and corruptly run penitentiary where he has positive effects on the hapless inmates, especially another lifer (Morgan Freeman). Director Frank Darabont does not spare viewers the dehumanizing ugliness of life behind bars in a story notable for its portrayal of a man who inspired hope in others while coping with the injustice done to him. Themes and focus: How can we help others even during times of personal difficulty? What can we do to gain a better understanding of mercy and forgiveness? We will also wrestle with issues of sin: is it possible to do wrong for the “right” reason? What does the Church and scripture have to say in regard to this matter? Movies will be shown in the cafeteria. For more information, contact Valerie Adamski at 414-358-4600, ext. 148, or [email protected]. Admission is FREE.
