Anderson Middle School seventh grader Rummana-Mary Ryan was selected as the first place winner in US Representative Sander Levin’s 9th Congressional Essay Competition in Celebration of Black History Month. She attended a special ceremony at Representative Levin’s Roseville office and received a certificate and a book.

Rummana-Mary’s essay titled, “Hero Big and Small,” talks about the story of Daisy Bates, and her involvement in the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the mentoring of the Little Rock Nine. Rummana-Mary said in her essay, “Daisy Bates has influenced my life in many ways. She has shown me that I can’t just sit back and watch everyone else change the world or solve a national problem. I must fight for what I believe in...We can all make a difference in the world.”

Rummana-Mary participated in a Black History Month essay contest at Anderson, and teacher Abby Combs sent the entries received on to Representative Levin’s contest. Anderson winners were rewarded with a field trip to the Charles H. Wright Museum in April.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. This year, one of Berkley High School’s seniors, Justin Rogers was selected to receive a Gates Millennium Scholarship!

Justin’s scholarship notification said, “We commend you on your strong leadership, community service and academic achievements that contributed to your selection as a Gates Millennium Scholar. Your accomplishment is especially notable in context of the more than 52,000 students who applied, making this year one of the most competitive candidate groups in the program’s history.”

The GMS website, www.gmsp.org, states, “The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential.” This year Justin was among the 21 students in Michigan to receive the scholarship.

BHS counselor Natalie Perkins nominated and recommended Justin for this scholarship, and said about Justin, “He is an exceptional individual.”

In the recent past, BHS 2012 graduate Iyana Shelby was also a Gates scholarship recipient.

AMS PRINCIPAL DUCT TAPED TO THE WALL FOR CHARITYAs a follow up to a promise Anderson made to Anthony Ianni at an assembly last fall, Mr. Vince Gigliotti, AMS Principal, volunteered to be duct taped to a wall as a fundraiser for the Autism Alliance of Michigan. Students purchased a strip of duct tape for $2 and then taped Mr. G to the wall during lunch on May 7, 2014. The school raised over $300 for the cause. Both student contributions and teacher donations made this possible.

ANGELL WAX MUSEUM COMES TO LIFEStudents in Angell’s 3rd grade classes brought history to life at this week’s Wax Museum. Students researched a historical figure, dressed up as that person and presented to family and friends. The students stayed ‘frozen’ until someone came to their station and brought them to life. Historical figures included Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstein, J. K. Rowling, NASA astronauts and more.

COMMUNITY INVITED TO COMPLETE THE NEW DISTRICT SURVEY

The Berkley School District is interested in all community members’ honest feedback on programs, safety, facilities and how the District communicates with its stakeholders, among other topics. The survey is anonymous and should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete.

This survey is for:• Parents/Guardians • Employees • Community Members (non-parents) • Business Owners • Alumni

If you know someone who doesn’t have access to a computer, but would like a survey, copies are available at both the Berkley and Huntington Woods Libraries, as well as in all school offices.

The survey is available here: https://oaklandk12mi.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_5nnivTg95GYAVh3

The survey link is also posted on the District website homepage: www.berkleyschools.org.

Thank you in advance for your time!

On Saturday, May 3rd, Norup International 8th graders Timor Betzer and Alyssa Zino traveled to Milford High School to perform in the 2014 MSBOA District Four Middle School honors band. These students, along with over 100 others from Oakland and Livingston counties, rehearsed all day and performed a concert that evening with Director of Bands from Oakland University, Greg Cunningham.

Lucie Poulicakos, from RecycleBank, presented Burton Principal Beth Krehbiel with a check for $3,000 this week. The money is a grant to help fund and enhance Burton’s Waste Free Lunch program. The school now recycles more than ever, and partners with the City of Huntington Woods to make sure all recycling gets picked up on trash day.

Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. Thankfully, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching e-mails, mobile phones (text messaging ads) and instant messenger IDs. The Michigan Child Protection Registry is a free do-not-contact service for Michigan’s families and schools and can be located at www.protectmichild.com.
