questions. These could be about home,

work, where you live, what you do, your

family, etc. Try not to give one-word answer. The examiner will ask you in turn. You can

listen while the other student answers the

question.

In Part 2 you have to listen while the teacherexplains a situation. Then the teacher will give you

a picture and repeat the situation. You have

to discuss the situation with your partner and

decide what to do. You have about 2-3 minutes.

Exam tips

Look at your partner when you are speaking and

when you are listening.

Ask your partner for his/her ideas.

Remember to make a decision about what’s best,

most important, etc. at the end.

It is important for you BOTH to give your ideas and

opinions about things.

How to get started

Shall I start?

Who’s going to start, you or me?

Shall we start with this one?

Would you like to begin?

I’ll go first.  Let's start with this one.

How to get your partner to join in

What about this one?

What do you think about this one? What do you think we should choose?

Do you think this is a good one?

I think we should choose this one, don’t you?

Agreeing / Disagreeing

That’s true.

You’re right.

I agree.

I think so too.

That’s a good idea.

Yes, that's a good point.

I see what you mean.

Yes, but …

I don’t think so.

I prefer....

I think this is better because...

Well, I'm not sure about that.

I don't think that's such a good idea.

Making decision

Let’s go for …

We have to make a decision.

What have we decided?

Which one shall we choose? So, shall we choose this one?

Do you agree that this is the best one?

In Part 3, you have to talk for one minute about

a picture. After you finish, your partner will talkfor one minute about another picture.

How to start  A good way to start is “In this picture I can

see…”, “In this picture there’s a …” or “The

 picture shows…”

Say where something is in the photo

When you talk about a picture you often need to

say where something is.

Page 12: B1 4 Speaking

Talk about the action in the photo

When you are talking about different

activities that are happening in your photo,

use the present continuous.

Describe people

Usually there will be a person or people in

your photo. You will need to say what theyare doing or say something about their

appearance.

Page 13: B1 4 Speaking

Don’t know what is called

If it is not important, don’t talk about it.  If it is important, point to it and say “That thing”

or ”I don’t know what that’s called”

Or try to talk about the object:

It’s a thing for +V -ing

You can use it to …  It’s something you can use when …

Talk about impressions and opinions

might: It might be someone’s birthday because …  I think / I don’t think: I think / I don’t think they

are on holiday because …

Perhaps/Maybe: Perhaps she is tired because …

Probably: It’s probably summertime because …

The photograph shows a football player getting a

red card from a referee at a soccer match.

The player who is getting the card is on the

white team. The other players in the picture are

all from the other team. They look very happy

with the referee’s decision. The other team hasa blue and white kit.

The referee is holding the red card high in the

air. He is being very clear – I think he is quite

strict and is not allowing any discussion. Thestadium is crowded, and it is difficult to see

where the players are from.

The picture shows three boys in a small boat on

a river. The river looks cold and wet and thewater is moving fast.

One of the boys is holding a paddle or an oar. He

is looking down at the water and he looks

worried. Maybe he thinks that they are going to

hit something or fall out.

The boy in the middle is smiling. He is enjoying

the adventure! He's only wearing a T-shirt, so

maybe it is not very cold. The third boy is

looking at something up the river, near a bridgeor a wall. There could be something coming, or

maybe there are some others in a boat.

I think they are students on a holiday or a

summer school.

The picture shows a family visiting their new

baby in hospital. It’s the evening, because thelight is on, so the father must have brought his

children after work or school.

There are two children beside the baby, a boy

and a girl. The boy is a little older than his

sister. He’s about six or seven. He looks proud.

The girl looks very excited to have a new sister.

The father has his arm around his children. He

looks proud as well. The mother is sitting at the

left. She looks happy but a little tired.

The baby is in the middle. I think it’s a girl,

because she is wearing pink clothes. The baby is

sleeping despite all the noise and excitement.

The picture shows three girls waiting for a plane in

the departure lounge at an airport.

They are laughing and having a lot of fun. I thinkthey’ve been waiting a long time because they look

tired, especially the girl on the left. She is leaning

her head on her friend’s shoulder. The girl on the

right has finished reading a paper, and it looks likethey have been drinking some Seven-Up while they

were waiting.

The airport is crowded, and there are a lot of other

people waiting for the next plane. They all havesome hand luggage, but I can’t see any big bags, so

they must have checked in their baggage already.

They are wearing coats and hats and scarves, so the

weather must be cold at the airport or where they

are going.

This is a picture of a big city on a river. . The

picture shows boats and ships in the river

and some big old and modern buildings on

the land. There are trees along the river and

there is some traffic on the road which runs

along the river. One of the ships looks old. In

the right of the picture there is a big modern

building. I think it is a museum or a train

station or a big shopping center.

In Part 4, you have to talk with your partnerabout a topic. The topic will be related to thephotos you saw in Part 3. You’ll probably talkabout your likes, dislikes and preferences, yourhabits and experiences, etc. If possible, say why.

Examples of Part 4 questions

Your photos show food. I’d like you to talktogether about the food you eat at home and

the food you eat in restaurants.  Your photos show people listening to music. I’d

like you to talk together about the kind of musicyou enjoy when you were younger and what youlike now.

Keep the conversation going  To keep the conversation going it is a good

idea to ask your partner a question

sometimes, not just give your own opinion.

Also, turn toward your partner so it is easierto talk together.

Likes & Dislikes
