FROM THE DEAN

The Jindal School of Languages and Literature (JSLL) is the eleventh school of O. P. Jindal Global University. JSLL has been set up to encourage innovative research and effectively teach languages, linguistics and literature studies for our present hyper-globalized era, when language learning and intercultural communication are more important to human flourishing than ever before. In our time languages are both dying out as well as expanding in use and richness. Several languages have expanded their reach to include hundreds of millions of speakers, even in far removed corners of the globe, and it is common today to find people who are bi- or trilingual, who know a 'global' language as well as regional or local ones. Understanding or speaking a 'foreign' or 'non-native' language is something we sometimes choose to do and at other times is non-negotiable. We see that it is highly beneficial to our lives. To be sure, we learn new languages for both fun and profit! In classical systems of formal learning, in India and elsewhere, philology (a Greek word meaning love of words) was the business of every educated person. Learning multiple languages and literatures was even an ethical responsibility, through which people became steeped in their cultural heritage and embraced their humanity. Important and beautiful works of separate literatures-local, regional and national-are today understood as being part of world literature and as having value for human society as a whole. This is something we come to appreciate whether we read (or hear or see) a work in translation or in its original language. Use of several languages is increasingly part of our everyday cultural experience and helps us literally become known to ourselves and to others.

O. P. Jindal Global University has a varied faculty whose members have extensive global and international experience. Many have learned, taught and researched in different countries and experienced cultural migration. The wider faculty of the university will join the faculty of JSLL in helping students become comfortable and proficient in their use of language and languages and in their appreciation of cultural value in several geographical areas. In addition to an accomplished faculty who will guide students through their study programmes, JSLL has state-of-the art facilities for study of language and literature. JGU has more than a dozen thematic research centres through which faculty and students add to knowledge of our world, and several of the centres focus on regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The JGU Global Languages Centre and the Centre for Writing Studies work in coordination with JSLL to provide effective language instruction and impart skills to any and all JGU students who seek to learn a new language. Student clubs and organizations conduct events and give performances that will enhance your appreciation of language and the arts. JSLL is well networked with the many foreign cultural institutes and agencies for language learning located in Delhi and elsewhere. Agreements for learning and research between JGU and institutions in more than 50 countries of the world mean that students of JSLL have a vast number of opportunities to study their chosen language in a foreign country (for academic credit) and to complete internships involving international organizations. JSLL provides all the ingredients for a stimulating and rewarding higher education journey and a subsequent career.

Hispanophone people – those who speak Spanish as the i r main language – make up more than 500 million of the world's population. The Spanish language in its many

Hispanic is an adjective (word) that indicates cultural participation and belonging; the 'Hispanosphere' is the space of cultural interaction through the Spanish language. The Spanish language has contributed immensely to the cultural heritage of the world for more than five hundred years. Furthermore, contacts between the Hispanosphere, Anglosphere, Francosphere and other culture zones become deeper and richer every year. Hispanidad (an English equivalent of the word is 'Hispanicity') is something that people around the world are experiencing through football and food, as well as through the poetry of Pablo Neruda and the prose of Miguel de Cervantes and Gabriel Garcia Márquez or the films of Pedro Almodóvar.

JSLL provides you an opportunity to experience Hispanidad. Not only will students benefit from regular interaction with highly proficient teachers of Spanish (native and near-native speakers), but they will enjoy other kinds of cultural and social opportunities on the campus and through associated organizations. Jindal Global University currently has agreements with more than a dozen universities and organizations in Spain and in Latin American and

forms and dialects is a medium of everyday communication of people in Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. Spanish is an official language in 21 countries of the world, and while we might think of Spanish as the 'native' language of Spaniards and many people of 'Latin' America and the Caribbean, it is also a language of tens of millions of people in North America, Africa, and the Philippines. Spanish is increasingly used as far away from the Hispanic heartlands as Canada and Australia.

Caribbean countries. Students in the BA Hons. Spanish programme will have opportunities to learn in Spanish-speaking countries. Academic work they complete under an approved study abroad/student exchange engagement could be counted towards their JGU degrees.

The programme enables students to attain B2 Spanish proficiency level at the end of the program by completing stages of language learning specified by the internationally accepted Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF). Graduates wi l l be equipped to enter the employment world or to continue study of language and literature at postgraduate level.

Jindal Global University offers a well-designed undergraduate curriculum through the Jindal School of Languages and Literature that leads students to proficiency in the Spanish language and familiarity with Hispanic cultures. The duration of the BA (Hons.) Spanish programme (Spanish Language and Literature) is three years (six semesters) full time. The curriculum ensures wide and deep engagement of students with a variety of cultural forms, including literature, drama and other arts (e.g., cinema, music). Students of the programme will have opportunities to be tested for Spanish proficiency certificates that are awarded by official cultural agencies. Many courses of the BA (Hons.) Spanish programme will also be open to students pursuing other degrees.

BA (HONS.) SPANISH @ JSLL ? WHY CHOOSE

06

A language-focused university degree teaches skills that can be transferred to many work environments and used in a multitude of jobs.

Teaching, translation and interpreting are popular work pathways, whether in freelance employment, in commercial enterprises, or in government. Language graduates are sought for many kinds of jobs in which intercultural communication is important. For example, a graduate in Spanish might work with a company that conducts business with enterprises in Spanish-speaking countries, or s/he could work for a government agency (or NGO) that interfaces with organizations and individuals in a Spanish-speaking country.

HELLO

Skills mastered by language and literature graduates can be combined with other analytical, critical thinking and vocational skills. Graduates who study for postgraduate and professional degrees find that their language proficiency and the associated intercultural experience feed into their further training. If you go on for postgraduate work in international relations, global studies, environmental studies, social sciences, humanities, law, management, education or other fields, and if your specialization in that field demands that you be knowledgeable about a Hispanic society and culture, you will need to have practical command of Spanish, and the sooner you learn the language, the better.

In addition to expanding your mind, learning Spanish and encountering a Hispanic cultural heritage could be of immediate relevance to the employment you take up after your formal education. You might even decide that you want to teach or do research in the field of Spanish studies in a school, college or university.

The O.P. Jindal Global University does justice to its name by not only having a milieu of faculty, staff and students from around the world but also offers a number of foreign language courses that enable students understand diversity and pluralism and equip themselves for the present global era. Being multilingual in today’s time is undoubtedly an asset.

The Centre follows a curriculum that is in line with international standards stipulated by Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The Centre is well equipped with resources and infrastructure like multi-media lab that enhance and make classroom conducive for learning a foreign language. The approach followed helps learners acquire languages in a leaner friendly atmosphere. Learning happens through engaging students in creative and communicative task-based activities. Equal importance is given to all the four communicative skills, i.e. reading, listening, writing and speaking. Various teaching approaches are applied as per the needs of the learners. Students are encouraged to become autonomous and reflect over their own learning strategies. A lot of importance is laid upon the authenticity of communication. Learners get an opportunity of interacting with the people of the target language countries through online chat sessions. The students are informed about the history and culture of the various target languages that they learn. The Centre currently also organizes immersion trips in the summer and winter break to Spain.

The adrenaline rush at the sight of a podium, the sheer love for arguing, the camaraderie within a team, the passion to learn and win, and the innumerable stories embedded in our memories with every passing debate, is what the Jindal DebSoc promises to offer year after year. With a greater level of spontaneity in speeches and emphasis on matter and the skill of fleshing out arguments over manner, the Jindal DebSoc provides a platform to find safe place on campus.

Human rights are the fundamental rights one has for survival and dignity. The Human Rights Society, over the years worked primarily through grassroots activism and spreading awareness about the systemic oppression faced by millions of people around the world. We’ve actively worked in areas of child labor and workers’ rights. We brought Renegades – a rock concert with a cause, Monkey Speak – a free speech magazine facilitated by students, Bal Adhikar Sabha – a round table conference on child rights, juvenile justice, Right to Education and advocacy for the rights of children with disabilities, research work on Right to Education and much more.

The Social Service Society, conceived in 2009, has come a long way since its inception. We have grown from having one program teaching children of construction workers – to running numerous activities simultaneously, both on and off campus, open to all of the JGU students and faculty community. We are an open society that is committed to ensuring that as many people as possible can benefit from our privilege. Our initiatives include teaching children at the Balgram orphanage, the children of the Sodexo staff, and the children at the Rohat primary and secondary school. We also help the members of the Tulip labor colonies with their problems, and the members of the Rohat village with issues relating to governance.

JSIA has established a unique academic initiative – Diplomania, which is the first International Relations Society of O.P. Jindal Global University. It focuses on opportunities and challenges in contemporary International Relations. Since its establishment in the year 2018, Diplomania has organised two successful International Youth Conclaves.

A Model United Nations conference is a simulation of the proceedings that take place at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, USA. It is an internationally recognized activity, and regarded as a form of enriching JSIA students with experiences in public speaking and diplomacy. We seek to bring together participants to debate on pressing international issues, express views and intriguing ideas to tackle global conflicts and forge friendships along the way.
