4.3.2 FunctionIn the event of fire, the air pressure in the connected dry pipework drops and thediaphragm valve (Fig. 4/16) opens. This makes the water pressure (control pres-sure) in the diaphragm chamber of the deluge valve (Fig. 4/9) drop and the appliedwater supply pressure opens the deluge valve:● The nozzle pipework is flooded with water.● The alarm pressure switch (Fig. 4/13) is activated and reports the alarm to the

fire detection control panel that extinguishing water flows into the nozzle pipe-work.

● The acoustic alarm sounds.

INFORMATIONCollected condensed water independently drips out of the automatic drip checkvalve (Fig. 2/11).

4.4.2 FunctionIn the event of fire, the water pressure in the connected activation line (Fig. 6/16)drops. This makes the water pressure (control pressure) in the diaphragm chamberof the deluge valve (Fig. 6/9) drop and the applied water supply pressure opens thedeluge valve:● The nozzle pipework is flooded with water.● The alarm pressure switch (Fig. 6/13) is activated and reports the alarm to the

fire detection control panel that extinguishing water flows into the nozzle pipe-work.

● The acoustic alarm sounds.

INFORMATIONCollected condensed water independently drips out of the automatic drip checkvalve (Fig. 2/11).

4.4.3 Maximum geodetic sprinkler heights in the hydraulic activation line

L WARNINGLack of fire safety due to excessively high pressure in the hydraulic activa-tion lineIf the maximum permissible pressure in the hydraulic activation line is exceeded, proper release of the deluge valve cannot be guaranteed.● Adhere to specified values for maximum geodetic sprinkler heights in the

hydraulic activation line or use a deluge valve set with a different release type.● Monitor the pressure electrically in the hydraulic activation line with a pressure

switch in case of an automatically monitored deluge valve set.

The maximum geodetic sprinkler height in the hydraulic activation line is equal to themaximum permissible pressure in the hydraulic activation line and must be adheredto in any case. The geodetic height is measured perpendicularly between the diaphragm chamberof the deluge valve and the highest sprinkler in the hydraulic activation line.Following diagrams show the maximum geodetic heights for each nominal width, dependent on the water supply pressure.

INFORMATIONThe values shown are based on a calculated pressure drop in the hydraulic activa-tion line of 2.5 mH2O (0.25 bar (3.56 psi)).

The deluge valve is a diaphragm-operated valve that ensures double sealing forceagainst the water pressure. The valve disk is connected to the diaphragm actuatorvia the valve rod. Pressure compensation between the water supply and the dia-phragm chamber takes place via an external bypass line with integrated throttle.A check valve in the bypass line also prevents pressure drop in the diaphragmchamber as a result of pressure dropping in the water supply system. Safe sealingagainst the water supply of the pipework is ensured since the actuator area of thediaphragm is larger than the valve disk. This closing force is slightly increased by a pressure spring which also keeps thevalve disk closed in depressurized state and facilitates commissioning. The nozzlepipework operates under atmospheric pressure and is flooded when the delugevalve is activated. The deluge valve is triggered by a pressure drop in the diaphragmchamber caused by the corresponding release elements (e.g. ball valve, solenoidvalve, diaphragm valve) or direct connection of a hydraulic activation line.

4.5.2 Manual releaseEach deluge valve set has a manual release in addition to the automatic releasedevice (electric, pneumatic, hydraulic).By opening the ball valve manual release (Fig. 13/2), the pressure in the diaphragmchamber of the deluge valve drops and the applied water supply pressure opens thedeluge valve.

4.5.3 3/2-way valveThe 3/2-way valve has the following functions:

Lever position Function"Operation" (Fig. 15/3) Alarm pressure switch and optional water motor alarms

are in stand-by."Closed" (Fig. 15/4) Deactivation of alarm pressure switch and optional

4.5.4 Alarm pressure switchThe alarm pressure switch (Fig. 13/4) triggers when water flows through the openeddeluge valve and passes through the alarm pressure switch. The alarm pressure switch reports the alarm to an permanently manned location.

4.5.5 Pulse solenoid valveThe pulse solenoid valve (Fig. 13/5) for electric release is in closed condition duringstand-by.In the event of fire, the fire detection and suppression control panel opens the pulsesolenoid valve, the water escapes from the diaphragm chamber and the delugevalve is opened by the applied water supply pressure. The pulse solenoid valve remains de-energized in the previously switched state. This ensures that a power failure does not interrupt the suppression process. Thepulse solenoid valve must be closed again by the fire detection and suppressioncontrol panel to re-establish operational readiness after activation.

(GND)

4.5.6 Diaphragm valveThe diaphragm valve (Fig. 13/6) for pneumatic release is kept in a closed conditionby the pressure of a connected pneumatic activation line. When the pressure in the connected dry pipework drops, the diaphragm valveopens, the water escapes from the diaphragm chamber and the deluge valve isopened by the applied water supply pressure. The triggering pressure of the diaphragm valve depends on the pressure in the dia-phragm chamber of the deluge valve (Fig. 17).

The pressurized air of the connected pressurized air feed (Fig. 18/1) flows throughcheck valve (Fig. 18/2) and bypass line (Fig. 18/3) into the connected pneumaticactivation line (Fig. 18/10). Pressure gauge (Fig. 18/7) and pressure switch(Fig. 18/6) monitor the pressure in the activation line. If the pressure drops below theset switching pressure, the pressure switch reports a pre-alarm.The ball valve bypass line (Fig. 18/4) must be closed during operation (lever pointsupwards) and secured with a lock (Fig. 18/5). The ball valve can be opened for aquick filling of the activation line. The ball valve pressure gauge (Fig. 18/8) is used to carry out a function test of thepressure gauge (Fig. 18/7).The vent valve (Fig. 18/9) is used for pressure relief of the pneumatic activation line.

INFORMATIONWhen multiple pneumatically controlled deluge valve sets are used, each pneu-matic activation line must have its separate pressurized air supply connection.

4.5.8 Automatic drip check valveThe automatic drip check valve (Fig. 13/7) is used to automatically release con-densed water and to drain the alarm line.Condensed water may only leak in small quantities from the automatic drip checkvalve. When water is leaking permanently, there is a fault (Ä Chapter 9 “Faults”on page 75).Press and hold down the automatic drip check valve for quick drainage.

4.6 Optional components4.6.1 Additional alarm pressure switch

An additional alarm pressure switch can be installed for activation of additionalalarm devices (Ä Chapter 10.1.1 “Additional alarm pressure switch” on page 78).

4.6.2 Alarm devicesAdditional alarm devices (refer to product catalog) can be triggered by an additionalalarm pressure switch.

14 GlossaryCommissioning Commissioning is the initial usage of the system in line

with its intended use.Danger/hazard Condition or situation where health damage can possibly

arise.Decommissioning Decommissioning is the (temporary) shutdown of the

system.Equivalent length The equivalent length is used to calculate the pressure

caused by the deluge valve. The equivalent length isequal to the pipe length that would be necessary insteadof the valve to establish the same pressure drop.

Inspection Measures for determining and assessing the as-is condi-tion of a functional unit, including the determination of thecauses of wear and derivation of the necessary conse-quences for future usage.

Maintenance Combination of all technical and administrative measuresas well as measures of the management during the lifecycle of a functional unit to maintain the functional condi-tion or its restoration so that the demanded function canbe met.

Maximum geodeticheight

The maximum permissible height measured vertically to adefined low point.

Permanently mannedlocations

Permanently manned locations receive the electricalalerting of the sprinkler system. These are, for example,alarm-activating locations that are named by the authori-ties (e.g. control room of the responsible fire department),a permanently manned location in operation or a perma-nently available security company.
