DearFriends, Lastweekend’sGospel reading recorded thestrong, clear, correctandconfidentconfessionof faithmadebySimon Peter through the power of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am? Simon Peteranswered,“YouaretheChrist, theSonofthelivingGod!”
Thisweekwecontinue to read,“Jesusbegan toshowhisdisciples thatHemustgo to Jerusalemandsuffergreatlyfromtheelders, thechiefpriestsandthescribes, andbekilledandonthethirddayberaised.”
In these few, but powerful words, Jesus revealed the whole purpose of His earthly ministry, the Father’sheavenlyplanforthesalvationofallhumankindandtheGoodNewsthatHe,theChrist, hadcometosuffer, dieandberaisedagainfortheforgivenessofoursinsandthesinsofthewholeworld!
PoorPetercouldn’tunderstandallthatJesuswasrevealingtothemandheresponded,“Godforbidit,Lord!NosuchthingshalleverhappentoYou!” He,andtheotherdisciples,werelookingfor“anotherkindofChrist,”onewhowouldcomelikeashiningknightonawhitehorse,intruth,theywantedanearthlysaviortofreethemfromthetyrannyoftheirRomancaptures. ButJesusknewWhoHewasandwhyHehadcome! Looking“through”Peter,Jesussaidtothedevil,“Getbehindme,Satan!Youareanobstacletome.YouarethinkingnotasGoddoes,butashumanbeingsdo."
JesusknewthatHehadcometo“takeupHiscross”andfollowthewillofHisHeavenlyFather.ItwasabsolutelynecessarythatHemustgotoJerusalem;sufferunjustlyatthehandsofwicked,hatefulmen;dieacrueldeathonthecrossandthreedayslaterberaisedagaintolifebythepowerofAlmightyGod.Bydoingso, He took on your sins, and mine, and through this forgiveness restored ourrelationshipwiththeFather.
JustasHedid forus,soHecallsus to“takeupourcross”andfollowHim.Sooften, however, it seems that we misunderstand what a cross is. Our “cross” is notsomethingcommontoallpeople–Christianandnon-Christianalike.Thechallengesatwork, illnesses and disease, struggles in relationships are not necessarily “crosses”becausetheyarecommontoallhumanbeings.Rather, ourcrossissomethingHeplacesbefore us to willing endure (suffer) because we are His followers, because we arebelievers, becausewe areHis disciples. I think the “real” crosses in our lives are things like…Loving the unlovable;caringforthelonelyandforgotten;awillingnessto“touch”the“untouchable;”offeringsomethingofourselvestohelpthoseinneed. Finally,Jesussaid,“FortheSonofManwillcomewithhisangels inhisFather’sglory, andthenhewillrepayallaccordingtohisconduct.”
