DearFriends, Lastweekend’sGospel reading recorded thestrong, clear, correctandconfidentconfessionof faithmadebySimon Peter through the power of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am? Simon Peteranswered,“YouaretheChrist, theSonofthelivingGod!”

Thisweekwecontinue to read,“Jesusbegan toshowhisdisciples thatHemustgo to Jerusalemandsuffergreatlyfromtheelders, thechiefpriestsandthescribes, andbekilledandonthethirddayberaised.”

In these few, but powerful words, Jesus revealed the whole purpose of His earthly ministry, the Father’sheavenlyplanforthesalvationofallhumankindandtheGoodNewsthatHe,theChrist, hadcometosuffer, dieandberaisedagainfortheforgivenessofoursinsandthesinsofthewholeworld!

PoorPetercouldn’tunderstandallthatJesuswasrevealingtothemandheresponded,“Godforbidit,Lord!NosuchthingshalleverhappentoYou!” He,andtheotherdisciples,werelookingfor“anotherkindofChrist,”onewhowouldcomelikeashiningknightonawhitehorse,intruth,theywantedanearthlysaviortofreethemfromthetyrannyoftheirRomancaptures. ButJesusknewWhoHewasandwhyHehadcome! Looking“through”Peter,Jesussaidtothedevil,“Getbehindme,Satan!Youareanobstacletome.YouarethinkingnotasGoddoes,butashumanbeingsdo."

JesusknewthatHehadcometo“takeupHiscross”andfollowthewillofHisHeavenlyFather.ItwasabsolutelynecessarythatHemustgotoJerusalem;sufferunjustlyatthehandsofwicked,hatefulmen;dieacrueldeathonthecrossandthreedayslaterberaisedagaintolifebythepowerofAlmightyGod.Bydoingso, He took on your sins, and mine, and through this forgiveness restored ourrelationshipwiththeFather.

JustasHedid forus,soHecallsus to“takeupourcross”andfollowHim.Sooften, however, it seems that we misunderstand what a cross is. Our “cross” is notsomethingcommontoallpeople–Christianandnon-Christianalike.Thechallengesatwork, illnesses and disease, struggles in relationships are not necessarily “crosses”becausetheyarecommontoallhumanbeings.Rather, ourcrossissomethingHeplacesbefore us to willing endure (suffer) because we are His followers, because we arebelievers, becausewe areHis disciples. I think the “real” crosses in our lives are things like…Loving the unlovable;caringforthelonelyandforgotten;awillingnessto“touch”the“untouchable;”offeringsomethingofourselvestohelpthoseinneed. Finally,Jesussaid,“FortheSonofManwillcomewithhisangels inhisFather’sglory, andthenhewillrepayallaccordingtohisconduct.”

What“cross”doyoubelieveJesus isplacingbeforeyoutoday?Howwillyou“TakeUpYourCross”tofollowJesus? IpraythatGodgraciouslygiveyou“eyestosee,earstohearandheartsfilledwithcompassion”asyou“TakeUpYourCross”tofollowHim!

In today’s Gospel (Matthew 16:21-27), we hear Jesus say to us, “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” The challenge is to let go so God can lead us.

Calling all OLV parishioners…for 2020, the annual St. Vincent de Paul Detroit FRIENDS WALK will be

VIRTUAL for the entire month of September. We invite you to join with your neighbors & friends and take a walk (or walks) to support our neighbors in need.

THANK YOU for your most generous support of OLV’s SVdP Ministry.

Would you like to know what is central to OLV’s St. Vincent de Paul Ministry? If your answer is YES, please call our dedicated line at: (248) 349-2622 or e-mail us at: [email protected] and a SVdP member will contact you and share the rewards of being a Vincentian.

First Communion We wish to welcome to the table of the Lord the following children who

celebrated First Eucharist during the past couple of months. It is our

prayer that these children and their families continue to grow in their

understanding of Jesus' presence in the Eucharist and give thanks to

God for the many blessings that come from Him.

We are Here for You!With so many people impacted by COVID-19, which has caused much fear, stress and anxiety, the Christ-centered

care of Stephen Ministers is needed more than ever.  Stephen Ministers are very well trained to offer help, hope and healing during this crisis, making a very real difference through their compassionate and confidential care.  Because of the necessity of social distancing, normal channels for care have been restricted.  Face to face meetings will require the wearing of a mask while other forms of communication such as using the telephone, or FaceTime calls may be used.

Call our confidential voice message   box at: (248) 349-0216 and leave your name and contact information. A Stephen Minister Leader will return your call.
