The Port of Prince Rupert is a major economic catalyst in Northern BC:

• 19 Million Tonnes of Cargo: Continued growth in port volumes through 2016 has resulted in ongoing economic and employment increases

• 3,300 direct jobs: Since 2009, port employment has more than doubled in Northern BC, generating $259 million in wages annually

• $5 Billion of Western Canadian exports: Forest products, coal and minerals, grain and other agricultural products from Western Canada

• $112 Million in Government Revenues—Annual tax contributions to all levels of government from the companies and workers that keep the port moving

Major Port Expansion Projects:

• Fairview Container Terminal Expansion: Phase 2 North: DP World’s $200 million expansion of the Fairview Container Terminal has been completed in August 2017, and is now Canada’s 2nd largest container terminal. The terminal’s new capacity of 1.35 Million TEUs represents an increase of over 50%, and will ensure it can continue its growth as the fastest and most reliable terminal for imports and exports on North America’s west coast. As volume grows to fill the new capacity, over 200 new longshore jobs are expected to be created on the terminal.

• Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal: AltaGas has commenced a construction of the first Liquified Propane Gas (LPG) export facility on Canada’s west coast. The terminal will ship 1.2 million tonnes of propane annually from BC and Alberta to growing Asian markets. The $475 million project is providing 250 construction jobs, and terminal will require 50 permanent employees following its scheduled completion in early 2019.

• Agri-Food Logistics and Container Loading Facility: Ray-Mon t Logistics is constructing a facility on Ridley Island that will handle export pulses and cereals transported by rail from the Canadian and US Midwest, and transferred to containers for export through Fairview Container Terminal. The development of the transload facility will be complete in fall of 2017, and represents a significant expansion in intermodal logistics capacities at the Port of Prince Rupert.

• Security and Maintenance Complex: The Prince Rupert Port Authority is nearing completion of the construction of a $16-million security and maintenance building, being built by the Coast Tsimshian Northern Contractors Alliance (CTNCA) in partnership with IDL Projects. The project is a vital component of the expansion and integration of the Port’s growing marine safety and security infrastructure needed to accommodate growth in vessel traffic and terminal capacity at the Port.
