BACKSPIN A Charity Xbox Ping Pong Tournament for the NY Tech Community

What is Backspin?
Backspin is an Xbox table tennis tournament for the New York tech community. All proceeds from the event will benefit Child’s Play.
It will host some of the biggest movers and shakers in the New York startup space and will involve the perfect combination of fun, networking, and social responsibility.
Overall, Backspin is a rare opportunity to gain the attention of top influencers and early adopters.
The Details
When: February 26, 2011.
Where: General Assembly – a co-working space for entrepreneurs, technologists, and designers.
Structure: Two separate tournament brackets. Startups will battle it out in a team based tournament with the goal of being crowned champions of the NY Tech Community. Individuals will compete in a singles tournament.
How: Games will be played on Xbox’s new Kinect platform.

The MC’s
The event will be MC’d by Jeff Rubin and Pat Cassels.
Jeff and Pat are the hosts of College Humor’s Bleep Bloop show.

The Battle of the Startups
The startup competition will be a collection of NYC entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and personalities that make the New York tech and new media scenes so interesting.

The All-Star Team
In addition to companies sending representatives to compete, we will be fielding an “All-Star Team” with some of the best and brightest in New York Tech & New Media.

The Cause
All net proceeds from Backspin will go towards Child’s Play.
Founded in 2003, Child’s Play is dedicated towards improving the lives of hospitalized children by giving them access to toys, movies, and video games.
Over the past 7 years, they have successfully raised millions of dollars and helped thousands of sick children make their difficult lives a little more fun.

Xbox Kinect
Kinect is a controller free gaming and entertainment experience by Microsoft for the Xbox 360. Kinect enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller. Kinect has a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands, or presented objects and images.
Launched in North America in November 2010, Kinect has been taking the gaming world by storm.

TechiesGiveBack.Org
Founded in 2009, TechiesGiveBack.Org is a New York City non-profit dedicated towards driving social responsibility within the New York tech community.
In the last year alone, our efforts helped to raise $65,000 for CampInteractive, an after school for inner city youth, and $26,000 for City Harvest.

Peter Ha
Peter is currently the Technology Editor for The Daily, the first digital newspaper built for the iPad. He is the former Technology editor at Time Magazine and News Editor at AOL’s CrunchGear.
In 2009, he organized Wiimbledon, a Wii tennis tournament, in order to raise money for charity. Thanks to charitable donations from Virgin America, Best Buy, and Dyson, he raised over $4,000 for the Child’s Play charity.

Internet Week, New York
Since 2008, Internet Week has taken place all over the city with diverse events in different locations. The results has been a critical mass of web-focused events that raises the profile of NYC’s industry as a whole as well as the partners who participate.
Internet Week was also a critical supporter of the 2010 Webutante Ball – a joint event between TechiesGiveBack and Gawker that raised over 26k for City Harvest.
