Bacteria• bac·te·ri·um

• Prokaryotic cells

• Bacteria were among the first life forms to appear on Earth

• Antony Leeuwenhoek was the first person to see bacteria

• Bacteria inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste and the deep portions of Earth's crust

• Parasitic bacteria inhabit living organisms

• Bacteriology,

Origin and early evolution

The ancestors of modern bacteria:• were unicellular microorganisms • first forms of life to appear on Earth,• about 4 billion years ago

For about 3 billion years bacteria and archaea were the dominant forms of life

2008, fossils of macroorganisms were discovered

Page 5: Bacteria

Morphology• Bacteria display a wide diversity of shapes

and sizes, called morphologies.

• 0.5–5.0 micrometres

• Some bacteria may be even smaller, but these ultramicrobacteria are not well-studied

• Some bacteria may be up to 0,7 mm long

Growth and reproduction• Bacteria can grow and divide extremely

rapidly• Bacterial populations can double as

quickly as every 9.8 minutes• reproduce through binary fission( a form

of asexual reproduction)• In the laboratory, bacteria are usually

grown using solid or liquid media.• Bacterial growth follows four phases.

( lag phase, log phase, stationary phase and death phase)

Movement• Forward movement (swimming) and

tumbling.• Flagella are used for swimming through

fluid• Bacterial gliding and twitching

motility move bacteria across surfaces

Classification and identification

• Bacterial taxonomy• Phylogeny• Metabolism• Environment• Morphology• Pathogenicity

Three domain systemThe three-domain system is a biological

classification introduced by Carl Woese

Three life domains (Eukaryotes, Bacteria and Archaea)

1) Archaea- prokaryotic, no nuclear membrane

2) Bacteria- prokaryotic, no nuclear membrane

3) Eukaryotes- organisms that contain a membrane-bound nucleus.

Fun facts• You’re More Bacteria Than Human

• You Eat Bacteria. On Purpose. And You Probably Like It

• If you collect all the bacteria of your body, then it will weigh 4 pounds.

• There is a type of microbes called “ACTINOMYCETES” are responsible for the smell of rain.

• On average, mobile phones have more bacteria than handles of toilet.

Page 15: Bacteria

• After cleaning your mouth, you still have more than 10,000 bacteria on each tooth.

• If you love money then you should also know that there are 300 different types of bacteria living on a dollar bill.

• CHOCOLATE is antibacterial and it protects your teeth and fight against viruses that causes tooth decay.
