The area now known as Baguio City was first called Kafagwayand occupied by theKankaney and Ibaloi tribes of the Cordilleras.

    Spanish Occupation

During their occupation of the Philippines, the Spanish colonizers conducted aseries of expeditions, led by Juan Salcedo in 1572 and Don Q.M. Quirante in 1694to the cool mountains of Benguet.

A series of failed attempts to conquer the natives were made until foothold wasfinally gained by Commandantede Galvey in 1846, when he was able to establish a commandanciaor military

garrison in a beautiful stretch of fertile flat land.

This he named after his wife, and is now known as La Trinidad. Galvey went on toestablish the province of Benguet with 31 'rancherias' (camps or ruralsettlements). The area known as Kafagway was then a small rancheria composed ofabout 20 houses. La Trinidad remains the capital of Benguet province to this date.

The 'presidentia' (civil government) was first established in the Guisad Valley area.It was later moved to the present site of the Baguio City Hall.

One of the notable contributions of the Spanish era was the introduction ofcoffee, of the arabica variety, which is still grown in this area and known asBenguet coffee.

    American Occupation

When the Americans came to Baguio, after Spain ceded the Philippines to theUnited States of America for $20,000.00, they found the pine-covered hills and

the cool heights ideal for retreats from the sweltering heat of the lowlands. In asupreme feat of engineering feat they carved Kennon Road, from the mountainssurrounding the Bued River Canyon, connecting Kafagway to the Pangasinan andIlocos lowlands.

Early in 1900 the Americans established their government with H. PhelpsWhitmarsh as the first civil governor appointed for the first provincial government

established in the Philippine Islands, Benguet. At that time, the Philippines was stillunder the U.S. Military Government.

Baguio was then the capital of Benguet, and the American's best administrators

and teachers were fervent boosters and promoters: Worcester, Wright, Forbes,Pack, Barrows, Eckman and others who together with Filipinos committed to makethe place a virtual heaven on earth.

Baguio was set up as both a mining town and a recreational facility. The mountainssurrounding Kennon were mined with camps erected from the base to the plateauthat Baguio sits on. In 1903, Camp John Hay was developed for the rest andrecreation of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Baguio City was designed by premier American architect and urban planner DanielH. Burnham, who also master-planned Chicago's One Magnificent Mile and Manila'sRoxas Boulevard. American missionaries came and "Christianized" the natives andEnglish became the lingua franca.

On September 9, 1909, Baguio was declared a chartered city and the "SummerCapital of the Philippines" with The Mansion as the residence of the Americangovernor-general during the summer to escape Manila's heat. The PhilippineCommission held it's session in Baguio City, in the area on top of what is now knownas Session Road.

    Japanese Occupation

After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the war in the Pacific broke out, andthe Philippines, being the only colony of the United States became a prime target. The Japanese bombed Baguio on December 8, 1941 and occupied After theJapanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the war in the Pacific broke out, it on December27 of the same year, setting up their headquarters at Camp John Hay.

However, the war eventually changed course and on September 3, 1945, GeneralYamashita formally surrendered to the Americans at the US Ambassador'sresidence in Camp John Hay, after which, Baguio immediately set to the task ofrehabilitation.

    Philippines Independence

When the Philippines was granted independence in 1946, Baguio City continued tobe the Summer Capital of the Philippines, with Camp John Hay being retained bythe Americans under the RP-US Bases Agreement.

During summers, the whole of the Philippine Government conducted its business inBaguio City, a tradition that is continued today only by the Philippine SupremeCourt. This partly accounts for the ownership of a lot of beautiful vacation homesby the country's oldest families in areas like Leonard Wood Road, Park Drive andSouth Drive. Most of the prime property in Baguio City is owned by the national government:Cabinet Hill, Engineer's Hill, Supreme Court Compound, Court of Appeals Compund,Comelec Compound.

Baguio was the Philippines' top tourist destination from 1946 until July 16, 1990,when an earthquake destroyed many of the city's buildings. The city was quicklyrebuilt and all traces of the tragedy removed. Camp John Hay was turned over tothe Philippine Government on July 1, 1991 simultaneously with the turnover of allU.S. Bases in the Philippines, and was, in turn, awarded to a private developer in1997 on a long-term lease contract.

Today, Baguio City is the seat of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR),composed of the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Apayao and MountainProvince, and remains the Summer Capital of the Philippines.

    Wedding

Canao is still performed in Baguio City. Most of the local residents still

perform Canao especially those who are more affluent.

They do Canao on weddings. And even on funerals. Canao is an event where

the host or hostess slaughters cows and pigs to offer to their Gods. There

is also dancing involved and drinking of wine.

The horns of the cows are taken out later and they save them and put them

on top of the hostess' ceilings to show many cows being slaughtered. The

more horns in the ceilings mean that they have more Canaos done. It also

shows the economic status of the owner of the house.

The beef and the pork are actually boiled and cut into small pieces and

distributed to the attendees. They eat this by dipping it in soy sauce with

lots of red chillies. They eat this with boiled rice.

Most of the Canao are still done in the outskirts of Baguio especially in Tuba

    and in Sablan.

    Language

Most Igorots and residents originally from Baguio City rarely speak inTagalog. Older Igorots speak and understand English better than the

national language because of the influence of the Americans.

The Bontocs live on the banks of the Chico River. They were once well-knownbecause of their headhunting practices in the olden days but not today. Present-day Bontocs are a peaceful agriculturalpeople who have, by choice, retained most of their traditional culture despitefrequent contacts with other groups.

The pre-Christian Bontoc belief system centers on a hierarchy of spirits, thehighest being a supreme deity called Lumawig. Lumawig personifies the forces of

nature and is the legendary creator, friend, and teacher of the Bontoc. Ahereditary class of priests hold various monthly ceremonies for this deity for theircrops, the weather, and for healing. The Bontoc also believe in the "anito"spiritsof the dead who must be consulted before anything important is done. Ancestral

anitos are invited to family feasts when a death occurs to ensure the well-being ofthe deceased's soul. This is by offering some small amount of food to show thatthey are invited and not forgotten.

The Bontoc social structure used to be centered around village wards ("ato")containing about 14 to 50 homes. Traditionally, young men and women lived indormitories and ate meals with their families. This gradually changed with theadvent of Christianity. In general, however, it can be said that all Bontocs are veryaware of their own way of life and are not overly eager to change.
