Mary Ann Kantrow, President

We could not have asked for better weather for our Progressive Dinner held on August 17. It was a beautiful sunny day with mild temperatures. Tom and Jaye Green did a great job organizing this event. The first leg started at their new house in Saline. The adults relaxed and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery while the kids played on the trampoline. Then we moved on to Dave Winston and Paula Mac’s for dinner. The grills were ready and the chicken and tenderloin were excellent. The side dishes that the participants provided accompanied the meal perfectly. The cool night provided a great atmosphere for conversation and the kids were able to enjoy a jump in the pool. The dessert stop was at Keeley and Norm Bett’s home. Both young and old had fun in Norm’s basement with two slot car tracks! Don’t miss the full report about the Progressive Dinner from Stewart Free and pictures in this newsletter. I would like to thank Tom and Jaye for organizing this event and for providing it’s first stop. Thank you Dave and Paula, and Keeley and Norm for letting us enjoy your beautiful homes. I would also like to thank all who provided the side dishes and desserts.

The Duesey of a Tour has been rescheduled for September 13. Please contact Matt Huber if you want to attend. It promises to be a fun run to Auburn, Indiana with a stop at the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum. The color tour is also in the planning stages with Jim and Liz Christopher organizing this event for us again this year. It is scheduled for October 12 so mark your calendars. Two touring events in two months; will the fun never stop? In this newsletter please find the ballot for the 2003 election. You may notice something missing because we do not have a candidate for President yet. If you look on the back page of this newsletter you will see all the members who have donated their time to keep your club running. This list doesn’t even include all those who help with events and are instructors for our Driver’s Education events. It’s time to elect a new President to keep this club moving forward. Please consider running for President of your club and if you have any questions please feel free to give me a call. (734) 998-1403. See you soon

Perfect! Have you ever had a day when every little detail went just right? August 17 was just such a day as the Rally Sport Region held its 8th Annual Progressive Dinner. The weather was perfect for a spirited drive to Sa-line. A large group of Porsches followed the excellent maps and converged at Tom and Jaye Green’s new home. Our hosts provided a good variety of appetizers and drinks to go with the conversation. The Porsche convoy then hustled on to Dexter and the main course(s). Dave Winston and Paula Mac prepared a menu that included a delicious selection of beef tenderloin, smoked turkey, marinated chicken, salad, rice cas-serole, and vegetables. The route to the home of Norm and Keely Betts included a second opportunity to cruise along scenic Huron River Drive. Our final destination was highlighted by an abundant selection of desserts including rhubarb pie, cherry pie, chocolate cakes, cheesecake, and (too) much more. All attendees want to express their thanks to our gracious hosts for opening their homes and presenting a wel-coming atmosphere. It is apparent that our members’ talents and expertise match their impeccable taste in cars. The delightful drive home was a fitting end to a perfect day.

Need Car Advice?

Ask Portia

Dear Portia, Why does Porsche use numbers to designate its models? Why don’t they give them names like Valkyrie, or War-pferd? Confused in Plymouth Dear CIP, Some mistakenly think the numbers are in sequence but that would be ridiculous. Were there no designs be-tween #356 and #911? The numbers indicate the time of day that the design was conceptualized. Thus, the 356 was brought to life just before 4 in the afternoon by a design crew that was working off the effects of a lunch that consisted of schnitzel and schnapps. The 911 et al were conceived in the morning just as the caffeine buzz was settling in. You will notice that Porsche has taken the advice of some marketing type, rumored to be related to Chris Bangle, and named its last two models.

Dear Portia, Some of my friends say Porsche as a two-syllable word while others say it as one. Who’s correct? Wondering in Taylor Dear WIT, German is an odd language that is wonderful for being rude in since it has a plethora of grunts and hocker like sounds. Porsche is a one-syllable word with one of these inflections. The only people allowed to say it as two sylla-bles are authentic Germans. Otherwise we might as well pronounce names like Gratiot and Livernois in their native style and where would that lead?

Dear Portia, My wife says I am obsessed with my Porsche. She says I lavish more time, attention and money on it than I do on her. What am I to do? Puzzled Westlander Dear PW, You have NSOS: Neglected Significant Other Syndrome. You might try giving your wife more attention, as long as it didn’t involve money that could be spent on the car. You could actually listen when she talks, that doesn’t cost anything and women love it. A pet might help; I think you can still get strays from the Humane Society. En-courage her to take up a hobby, bingo or bridge or something. Just maintain your priorities and it will all work out. That’s all for now Porschephiles. Remember, just Ask Portia. 2003 Election Ballot The position of President and four positions on the board are up for election this year. Each member

and their affiliate may vote for the President position and four Board Members. Please return your ballot to:

Mary Ann Kantrow 5557 North Territorial Rd

Ann Arbor, MI 48105

Ballots should be postmarked no later then November 4, 2003 or ballots will be accepted at the November 8

th Annual Meeting.

The Candidates are:

Joe Lile I have been a member of RSR since its inception, and previously served as a board member from 97-99. I have also been the club archivist/historian since 97. If you have been to a DE event at Waterford you have probably seen a cretin with a clipboard doing grid tech inspections. That’s me. For the past few years I have been instructing, which has been as much fun as driving. Maybe that’s because in “real life” I’m a teacher. For the past year I have also been co editor of the Bahn Stormer. I will do eve-rything I can to see that the club serves its member’s needs but I sure wish we had more input from our 246 members. I notice that one of the duties is to “uphold the club’s name in good rapport” so I herewith promise to not to hit on any of the interns working on the newsletter.

Kelly Roberts My name is Kelly Roberts. My wife Susan and I have a 2001 Porsche Boxster. Both of us have been actively involved in RSR since joining. During the last 2 years we have enjoyed driving our car to as many RSR events as we can attend and sharing our home for Board Member meetings. I’m looking for-ward to continuing my role as Board Member for another two years. Joined RSR in July of 2001. Took over role as Club secretary in Feb. 2002 Became a Board Member in March 2002

Gary Stellmach I've been a member of RSR since shortly after it was founded, and have attended most board meetings and social events for the past 6 years. Now that I'm retired, I thought it was time to fully contribute by running for the board. This club has introduced me to many new and great friends who share my same passion for the marque. I'm a former drag racer but love the finesse of the Porsche. I've owned a 911 and several 914s, which is the ultimate driving experience to me. But you know that. You can find me most of the time running around in my canary yellow 1970 914-6 emitting that characteristic 6 cylinder snarl. You can always count on me to be at board meetings and to contribute my enthusiasm to further the goals of the club. I would appreciate your vote.

meal with Porsche friends will be included.

For information and to RSVP contact Matt Huber at: 810.225.8372 or [email protected]

The tour will start at 9:00 AM, the last car goes out at 9:30 AM! Meet at the Shell station on North Territorial Rd. just West of US-23

Richard Zarbo I am most proud of this club of Porschephiles, having been a founding member of RSR and on the board the past 2 years. The people of RSR are its strength, source of knowledge (Porsche related and other-wise) and a diverse range of fun events. I always look forward to club activities as I've come to know many of you as good friends and hope to meet many more. There are many challenges that have arisen this year so this is a particularly critical time for us to refocus our goals. I would be pleased to serve all of you in another term on the board as we strive to remain a vibrant club.

The First Annual Captain Wrong-Way Peach Fuzz Fall Color Tour - Sunday, October 12th

Liz and I are very happy to host the annual fall color tourand in honor of my “faux pas” with the directions of last year’s tour we have named the event honoring the world famous navigatorThe Captain Wrong-Way Peach Fuzz Fall Color Tour. Final details are still a bit sketchy; however, here are the essentials. The date of the tour is Sunday, October 12th; actual seat time will not exceed three hours with a pit stop sandwiched during the drive. In all likelihood, this year’s trek will take to the west -meaning we may meander as far as East Lansing. Again, we will finish our ride in a country town with about an hour worth of exploration time prior to a very nice meal. If you have not participated in our color tour before, please consider coming to this year’s event. It is a great way to meet fellow club members in a very social setting. Remember, this is a family event – and since most of the Porsches do not fit families too welldriving your favorite toy is not a prerequisite to enjoying the fun. This is a self-guided, drive at your own pace tour with other club members and their family and friends. I have talked with a few of the neighboring car clubs in the hope that they will meet us at the pit stop for some added fun - there has even been some talk of a combined eventmore on this later. Last year we had twenty-four cars, this year Liz and I hope for over thirty! RSVP’s are critical to account for sufficient seating at the restaurant. Please feel free to contact either Liz or me at 248.627.8655 – estate, please not later than 9:00PM...or email(s) [email protected] and/or [email protected]. When emailing please put the words Color Tour in the subject as I routinely delete anything that resembles spam! More information to follow soon. We look forward to seeing you at the tour!
