Parliament of India

The Parliament of India, also popularly known as Sansad, is the supremelegislative bodyin

India. The Parliament comprises thePresident of Indiaand the two HousesLok Sabha(House

of the People) andRajya Sabha(Council of States). The President has the power to summon andprorogue either House of Parliament or to dissolve Lok Sabha. India's government isbicameral;

Rajya Sabha is theupper houseand Lok Sabha is thelower house.The two Houses meet in

separatechambersin theSansad Bhavan(located on theSansad Margor "Parliament Street") inNew Delhi. Those elected or nominated (by the President) to either house of Parliament are

referred to as members of parliament or MPs. The MPs of Lok Sabha aredirectly electedby the

Indian public and the MPs of Rajya Sabha are elected by the members of theState Legislative

Assemblies,in accordance withproportional representation.The Parliament is composed of 790

MPs, who serve the largest democratic electorate in the world; 814.5 million Indians registeredto vote in the2014 general elections.

VICTORIA MEMORIAL

The Victoria Memorial(Victoria Memorial Hall) is a large marble building inKolkata(Calcutta),West Bengal,India which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the

memory ofQueen Victoria(18191901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under theauspices of theMinistry of Culture.

[2]The Memorial lies on theMaidan(grounds) by the bank of

theHooghly river,near Jawaharlal Nehru road.[3][4]

History

In January 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria,[5]

George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of

KedlestonandViceroy of India,suggested the creation of a fitting memorial. He proposed the

construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens.[6]

Curzon said,

"Let us, therefore, have a building, stately, spacious, monumental and grand, to which everynewcomer in Calcutta will turn, to which all the resident population, European and Native, will

flock, where all classes will learn the lessons of history, and see revived before their eyes the

marvels of the past."[7]

The Prince of Wales, later King George V, laid the foundation stone on 4 January 1906 and itwas formally opened to the public in 1921.

[8]In 1912, before the Victoria Memorial was

finished,King George Vannounced the transfer of the capital of India from Calcutta to New

Delhi.[9]

Thus, the Victoria Memorial was built in what would be a provincial city rather than a

capital.

GATEWAY OF INDIA

The Gateway of Indiais a monument built during theBritish RajinMumbai(formerly

Bombay), India.[2]

It is located on the waterfront in theApollo Bunderarea inSouth Mumbaiandoverlooks theArabian Sea.

[3][4]The structure is abasaltarch, 26 metres (85 feet) high. It lies at

the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Margat the water's edge inMumbai Harbour.[5]

It was a crude

jetty used by the fishing community which was later renovated and used as a landing place forBritish governors and other prominent people. In earlier times, it would have been the first

structure that visitors arriving by boat in Mumbai would have seen.[6][7]

The Gateway has also

been referred to as theTaj Mahalof Mumbai,[8]

and is the city's top tourist attraction.[9]

The structure was erected to commemorate the landing of their MajestiesKing George Vand

Queen Maryat Apollo Bunder, when they visited India in 1911. Built inIndo-Saracenicstyle,

the foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on 31 March 1911. The final design ofGeorge Wittetwas sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in

1924. The Gateway was later the ceremonial entrance to India forViceroysand the new

Governors of Bombay.[10]

It served to allow entry and access to India.[11]

The monument has faced three terror attacks from thebeginning of the 21st century;twice in2003 and it was also the disembarkation point in 2008 when four gunmen attacked theTaj Mahal

Palace & Tower.

India Gate

India Gate

The India Gate, originally called the All India War Memorial, is a war memorial located

astride theRajpath,on the eastern edge of the ceremonial axis ofNew Delhi,formerly calledKingsway. The names of some 70,000 Indian soldiers who died inWorld War I,in "Franceand

Flanders,Mesopotamia,andPersia,East Africa,Gallipoliand elsewhere in the near and the far-

east", between 191419, are inscribed on the memorial arch. In addition, the war memorial bearsthe names of some 12,516 Indian soldiers who died while serving in "India or theNorth-westFrontierand during theThird Afghan War".

[1]The India Gate war memorial, the architectural

style of which has been compared with theGateway of Indiain Bombay, and the NapoleonicArc

de Triomphein Paris, was designed byEdwin Lutyens.[1]

In 1971, following theBangladesh Liberation war,a small simple structure, consisting of a black

marble plinth, with reversed rifle, capped by war helmet, bounded by four eternal flames, wasbuilt beneath the soaring Memorial Archway. This structure, called Amar Jawan Jyoti, or the

Flame of the Immortal Soldier, has since 1971 served as IndiasTomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Connaught Place, New Delhi

Connaught Place(is one of the largest financial, commercial and business centers inNew Delhi,

India. It is often abbreviated to CPand houses the headquarters of several noted Indian firms.The former location of the headquarters of theBritish,the area's environs occupy a place of pride

in the city and are counted among the top heritage structures in New Delhi. It was developed as a

showpiece ofLutyens' Delhiwith a prominent Central Business District.

Named afterH.R.H.Field MarshalThe 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn,construction

work began in 1929 and was completed in 1933. The Inner Circle of Connaught Place was

renamed Rajiv Chowk (afterRajiv Goswami)while the Outer Circle became Indira Chowkunder Union Home Minister S.B. Chavan.

Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha(born June 27, 1964), popularly known as P. T. Usha, is

anIndiantrack and fieldathlete from the state ofKerala.P. T. Usha has been associated withIndian athletics since 1979. She is regarded as one of the greatest athletes India has ever

produced and is often called the "queen of Indian track and field".[2]

She is nicknamed the

Payyoli Express. Currently she runs the Usha School of Athletics atKoyilandyin Kerala. P. T.

Usha was born in the village ofPayyoli,Kozhikode District,Kerala. In 1976 the Kerala State

Government started a Sports School for women, and Usha was chosen to represent her district.

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar( i/stntndulkr/;born 24 April 1973) is a formerIndian

cricketerwidely acknowledged as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, popularly holding the

title "God of Cricket" among his fans.[2]

Some commentators, such as former West IndianbatsmanBrian Lara,have labelled Tendulkar the greatest cricketer of all time.
