Pinot Grigio is a relative newcomer to Australian Wine, but it is growing fast in popularity. A light bodied wine, it has slightly mealy texture that adds to the mouth watering and lingering finish. Great Varietal Character.

Widely Available - $9-12

This fresh, lively Sauvignon Blanc shows classical varietal character with grassy, nettle-leaf, lemon & grapefruit aromas. The palate is delightfully crisp and refreshing with tropical fruit & gooseberry characters. Fantastic Value.

Do you get confused with all the nutrition informational thrown at you these days? There’s low G.I, zones, no carbs, good fats, bad fats, detox, portion control, proteins, nothing seems easy anymore and most of us don’t know where to start! Well, start at the beginning.

Mother Nature created the best nutritional plan of all time, unprocessed, and unpackaged, clean, wholesome food. Think grains, dairy, vegetables, fruit, and meat. All the things that are good for you come in their original form. Anything that has been through a factory loses its natural form and therefore loses some of its natural goodness. One of Mother Nature’s finest moments came with the creation of one of the most humble of super foods – the apple.

Can I really call an apple a super food? Let’s have a close look at what one apple a day can offer us.

Apples are rich in flavonoids, which protect against cancer and heart disease

An average apple contains a whopping 5gm of fibre leading to improved bowel function.

Eating an apple a day has been proven to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

An American study showed that a group of people who ate an apple before each meal lost three times the amount of weight than a group that didn’t.

Apples are also packed with Vitamins A & C, iron and calcium.

All this for around $3.99 per kilo, I think that’s pretty super! Get into your local fruit store today and give your family a boost of great nutrition.

Rebecca Kerta is a group fitness instuctor at Healthworks Gym at Everton Hills aswell as the owner of The Health Shack in Albany Creek.

It is estimated that 10-15% of all couples have difficulty conceiving and seek specialist fertility treatment. A commonly used option is in vitro fertilisation, which involves retrieving a woman’s egg, fertilising the egg in a laboratory, and then transferring the embryo back into the woman’s uterus.

This entire process is typically referred to as an in vitro fertilisation “cycle” because it involves several procedures, over the course of about two weeks, starting when a woman begins taking drugs to stimulate egg production.

Because each cycle is expensive, lengthy, and stressful, it is desirable to achieve a viable pregnancy in as few cycles as possible. Many women find this time physically and emotionally stressful, and turn to a natural therapist for support.

A review published in the British Medical Journal in February 2008 found that, when given at the time of embryo transfer, acupuncture improved rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilization by 65% and 91% respectively.

At Red Suva Natural Therapies, our Naturopath, Herbalist and Acupuncturist offer individualized care and support for you and your partner through each stage of your journey, including pre-conception, conception and pregnancy.

If you would like a copy of the research mentioned above, or for more information about our menu of services, please don’t hesitate to contact Juanita or Christine at Red Suva Natural Therapies. Ph 3357 6295 www.redsuva.com.au.

GET YOUR HEART PUMPING AND HAVE A BALL

Looking for an excuse to get dressed up for an exciting night out, but feel like you need justification in these tough economic times? Fret no more; to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Australia’s leading heart health charity and to raise important funds, the Heart Foundation is holding a Gala Ball on Friday 15 May at 7.00pm.

A truly first class event to celebrate five decades of success, the event will be held in the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre’s Plaza Ballroom. Heart Foundation CEO, Mr Cameron Prout, said the ball would be an exciting night filled with leading entertainers, shows, auctions, a delicious three-course meal, fabulous gift bags and plenty of music to get your heart pumping.“We’ve got a great line-up of performers including a spectacular fire-tribe, a Cirque De

Soleil style act and a fantastic jazz band performing throughout the night,” Mr Prout said.

“Greg “Marto” Martin from Triple M’s The Cage will be our Master of Ceremonies on the night and guests will have the opportunity to participate in auctions and raffles, including the chance to take home a unique didgeridoo painted by local Aboriginal artist Lloyd Hornsby.”While the ball is a chance to celebrate, it’s also an important reminder that our hearts need care for life.

“Australians are getting older, heavier and less active, putting themselves at greater risk of cardiovascular disease,” Mr Prout said.

“The Heart Foundation’s 50th birthday wish is for all Australians to understand their risk of heart disease and lead a healthy lifestyle to reduce that risk,” he said.

To coincide with its milestone birthday, The Heart Foundation is encouraging the nearly 300,000 Australians also turning 50 in 2009, to use this milestone as a trigger to find out about their heart health and take action to ward off Australia’s number one killer - cardiovascular disease.

The Gala Ball forms part of the 2009 National Conference (Hearts in Focus: Celebration, Collaboration and Challenges, 14-16 May 2009, Brisbane).Tickets to the Gala Ball are $195, or $1900 for a table of ten, and are available by emailing [email protected], visiting www.heartfoundation.org.au/qldor phoning 1300 55 02 82.

For 50 years The Heart Foundation has been saving lives and improving health through funding world-class cardiovascular research, guidelines for health professionals, informing the public and assisting people with cardiovascular disease.

As a charity, the Heart Foundation relies on donations and gifts in wills to continue our lifesaving research, education and health promotion work. For further information go to www.heartfoundation.org.au or call 1300 36 27 87 (for the cost of a local call).

Have you ever wondered how your health really is? Do you have enough resistance for winter? Is there anything you can do to improve your chances of keeping those winter bugs at a healthy distance? Your ability to keep the winter colds and flu away comes down to how well your immune system is working and also how much internal stress your body is coping with.

If you could actually see the condition of your blood cells and improve your chances to ward off those winter colds wouldn’t winter be so much more enjoyable? Well you can…

What is a Hemaview? Hemaview is a darkfield microscope, which is connected to a flat screen allowing you observe your blood cells on the

screen. Only a single drop of blood is required and is a valuable tool when used in combination with Naturopathic consultation.

Sarah Berry, Naturopath and Hemaview Practitioner at the Fountain of Youth Relaxation Centre would like to help you to achieve a healthy immune system ready for winter. Therefore, when you book your Naturopathic consultation with Sarah this month, she will also include a complementary Hemaview live blood analysis for you during your consultation.

All consultations are by appointment only and health fund rebates are available. Now is the best time to prepare for winter so don’t delay book your appointment with Sarah on: (07) 3856 4087 or mobile: 0411 617 647

Have you ever been running late to drop the kids to school? The kids are arguing and noisy in the back seat. By the time you unload the kids, the pram, the baby and school bags and slowly make your way to the class rooms your temper is high, you’re feeling irritated and annoyed. Once the kids are happily in class, baby’s back in the pram and you’re on your way back to the car you start to feel tired and exhausted and you could really do with a nap (even though it’s only 9.30am).

Everyone has their own unique constitution, coping skills, stress management and nutritional status which provides us with our ability to cope in stressful situations. Sometimes we reach our breaking point; this normally occurs when all these things above have pushed us beyond our coping mechanisms and we begin to show ‘cracks’ in who we are. If we are regularly exposed to stressful situations, as most Mothers are, we tend to live in a stressful state. This is when we begin to feel:

anxious over little things•start fidgeting and are unable to sit •

stillBecome high strung•Have an overactive mind that can’t •

switch offEasily angered and irritated •

Then we switch to:

Being very tired and fatigued•Begin to put on weight or can’t lose •

weightYour hair’s falling out in clumps•

In clinic, this is known as adrenal exhaustion.

This condition is when your adrenal glands (on top of your kidneys) are worn out and rather than having a normal stress response your adrenals give you one almighty adrenalin rush and then fail because they cannot maintain a healthy level, so you fall quickly and severely.

To make you feel better doctors generally prescribe anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication. These drugs work well but as soon as you stop you’re back at the start. This medication is prescribed to help with the symptoms you’re experiencing but it doesn’t fix the problem.

What needs to happen is to re-nourish your adrenals, re-balance your brain chemicals and hormonal response to stress. In my clinic we use a professional series of questions and assessments to understand what type of stress response you are having. You are given a uniquely tailored program of specific nutrients to re-charge your body. In two weeks you should be re-discovering the woman you know you are!

MOTHERHOOD IS HARD WORK!By Skye Robinson

(ARA) - Families can celebrate Earth Month all year long by turning everyday tasks into fun and productive steps for children that illustrate how they can help make our planet a greener and healthier place.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort -- helping your kids “go green” can happen at home, at school or even through play. The first step is to learn about the issue and start a conversation with your child in a way that makes sense to them. Parents can utilize eco-themed toys or movies as a fun way to start a dialogue with their kids about the importance of protecting their planet.

Look for a green theme in products, toys and shows they already love, like the new “Barbie Presents: Thumbelina” DVD. Thumbelina, the star of the DVD, harnesses the magic of nature to save her home in the wildflowers from developers, and sets out to prove that even the smallest person can make a big difference.

The movie can ignite a conversation between parents and children about the small things they can do as a family to help give back to their environment. For more eco-tips on how you and your family can protect Earth, visit www.epa.gov/kids

Earth Hour all year longSteps on how your child can help the planet

(ARA) - Dinnertime is a lot more fun as the grilling season gets under way. Supersweet corn always ranks high on the list of delectable grillables. Here are three tips for serving corn at dinner: * Some cooks grill corn ears in their husks. But Cheryl and Bill Jamison, authors of “The Big Book of Outdoor Cooking and Entertaining,” prefer to “flame sear” ears stripped of their husks. * Whip up a Greek-style marinade of olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic and oregano -- brush the mixture on skewers of pork, corn rounds and zucchini that very conveniently add up to a meal. * Serve corn on the cob tonight and refrigerate the leftover ears. The next night, scrape off the nicely caramelized kernels and toss with a few other ingredients for a salsa to go with your leftover grilled chicken, pork or other protein. Supersweet corn from Florida is in markets until June. You may find corn in or out of the husk with kernels of yellow, white or both. Make sure you store the corn in your refrigerator to keep it fresh and sweet. For information on how to keep your corn fresh, visit FreshSuperSweetCorn.com/storage.

People will have the chance to try everything from rock climbing to mountain biking at the inaugural ‘Active Outdoors’ Expo 2009, an initiative of the Queensland Outdoor Recreation Federation (QORF), to be launched at South Bank, Brisbane on Saturday May 23rd.

The Expo promises to offer something for everyone with an action packed program featuring the Resi River Race and free activity demonstrations throughout the day including mountain bike trials, rock climbing, camp cooking plus many more still to be confirmed.

In addition to the Resi River Race and ‘Come & Try’ activities, there will also be the chance to talk to a wide range of outdoor providers of activities, or find out more about the outdoor gear and equipment on offer from some of Queensland’s leading outdoor service providers.

“We hope to engage public awareness and appreciation of the breadth of opportunities available for outdoor recreation activities in the South East corner of Queensland” says QORF CEO, Dr Donna Little.

The initiative supports State and Local Government’s push to get Queensland healthy and active through campaigns such as ‘Toward Q2’, ‘Find your 30’ and ‘Active Parks’.

“Outdoor Recreation is well placed to help Queenslanders be more active, and have fun” says Dr Little. “Participation in outdoor

recreation contributes to personal health and wellbeing. People get to do something that engages them physically and mentally but it also encourages a healthy interaction with the natural environment and you can make it as challenging as you like.”

The ‘Active Outdoors’ Expo 2009 will be run in conjunction with the Resi River Race, an 18km marathon teams outrigger canoe event hosted by the Brisbane Outrigger Canoe Club. Drivers who do not want to be hit with hefty fines for talking on their mobile phones now have a safe alternative with the launch of the Free2Talk BC900 Bluetooth enabled portable hands-free carkit on to the retail market this week in Australia.

With $9.3 million worth of fines collected last year in NSW alone, drivers can no longer afford to risk their hip pocket or more importantly, the safety of themselves and others.

Drivers who continue to ignore the law will be hit with a fine of more than $240 for using their mobile phone whilst driving.

According to data obtained under Freedom of Information, the total fines for mobile phone users in New South Wales alone jumped by 65 percent to $9.3 million in 2007-08.

Australian mobile accessory distributor, Cellnet, has exclusively launched a new

product onto the retail m a r k e t which enables drivers to meet the current law standards, a n d could reduce their risk of being fined and involved in road incidents caused by m o b i l e p h o n e use.

The product is the first of its kind, using solar power to recharge, alleviating the need for distracting cables hanging from the car visor whilst recharging.

Combined with the ability to safely and legally use their mobile phones whilst

driving, Free2Talk BC900 provides consumers with a safe and environmentally friendly communication tool.

As part of Cellnet’s push for ‘green’ alternatives, the company recognises that

consumers’ genuine concerns for the environment are on the rise. Products

such as Free2Talk that can deliver the green alternative will soon

be in even higher demand than traditional devices

which still use electricity and battery power to

recharge.

Cellnet believes the launch of the new Free2Talk BC900

Bluetooth portable car kit will assist drivers in avoiding the dangers

of driving under the influence of a hand held mobile phone.

65 % INCREASE IN MOBILE PHONE FINES

When Peter Rimmer first established his business at Albany Creek more than five years ago, he had high hopes for its growth. He had no idea, however, of the real potential for that growth over such a short period of time.

According to office manager Carolyn Rimmer, Platinum Painters has focussed on cultivating excellent relationships with their clients, which she believes is the reason for their success.

“We believe in providing an extremely reliable service and an excellent standard of workmanship for every job that we do,” Carolyn explained.

“We give our customers as much information during the quoting process as possible and will be there when we say we will be there.”

Servicing mainly the northern suburbs of Brisbane, Platinum Painters take pride in the fact that they are a small family owned and operated business. They do not hire subcontractors to carry out work, but Peter Rimmer handles every piece of work himself, taking extreme care in his workmanship.

Carolyn is the linchpin of the business, handling all the enquiries, planning and processing of work orders. In her spare time, she is

studying colour consultancy so that the business will also be able to offer a colour design consultancy service.

“People often need assistance with colour choices,” Carolyn said. “Because I am working with the paint products so frequently, I have a really good understanding of what’s new and stylish, and how to match the colours into a home’s environment.”

Platinum Painters value their customers as much as they value their workmanship, and reward each customer who refers them to a friend or relative.

“Our referral system works well and we like to show clients just how much we appreciate their support by giving them a $50 Bunning’s voucher every time they refer us to a new client.”

Peter and Carolyn welcome new customers to contact them for information about their service. They are offering a discount of 10% for anyone who reads this article and follows through with the quote.

The popularity of Platinum Painters means that they already have bookings up to 12 weeks in advance, so to organise a quote now and have your fresh coat of paint booked in, contact Carolyn on 1300 739859.

There are many martial arts on offer these days, and many more instructors claiming to teach ‘the best’ martial art to you and your family… for a varying amount of money.

Don’t be fooled by their bluster or their seemingly advanced and effective drills or kata’s, use your own judgement and decide for yourself whether it seems practical or not.

When the Sensei, Sifu, Grandmaster, or Boss Guy is taking you through the ropes, simply ask yourself… ‘Is this stuff practical?’ Does the drill or kata have a chance of working practically under stressful situations? You owe it to yourself, and your family, to ask this question.

For what else are the martial arts for, but to teach you and your family to defend yourself

against intruders, attackers or never-do-well’s. Sure, discipline and self-control are important aspects, but at its very core, martial arts are for self defence.

If you find that you are asking yourself these questions all too often, and having the answers fall far short of your expectations, please call us at Studio Plus Health, Fitness & Martial Arts on (07) 3205 6292, and let us show you a new world of practical self defence.

ITS EASIER THAN YOU THINK! : TIPS

FOR BUILDING HEALTHIER HABITS

Beat the Winter Bulge

(ARA) - Between juggling work, soccer practice, ballet and household chores, taking the time to build healthier habits can be a seemingly daunting task for moms. A new survey reveals a startling misconception, despite the fact that it’s generally agreed upon that it takes just three to six weeks to form a new habit; the overwhelming majority of respondents think it takes six months or longer. “I want to educate moms and their families about how easy it can be to form new, healthy habits,” says Bob Greene, founder of the Best Life program. “For example, the simple act of swapping a sugared beverage for water is an easy change that can shave calories and add up to big results over time. Replace one typical 360ml ounce sugared beverage daily with water and cut 3,650 teaspoons of sugar a year from your diet -- that’s 17 kilograms of sugar a year.” To help empower families to take it one step at a time, Bob Greene and Nestle Pure Life brand bottled water joined forces to launch the Pure Life / Best Life Challenge at www.purelifebestlife.com to help make families small changes in four key areas: eat right, drink right, get active and get green. Following are a few simple steps that families can take to acquire new healthy habits. Drink Right. * Put a water bottle in your kid’s bag before

they head off to practice or a game. * If your family drinks whole milk now, switch gradually, first to 2 percent and then to 1 percent. * Before your workout, drink 250 ml of water. Eat Right: *Plan your meal menus in advance so you know what’s coming. * Set a kitchen curfew and close your kitchen after dinner. Get Green. * Keep your recycling bin in a prominent place to keep it top of mind throughout the week. * Stop catalogues you don’t read and don’t want. * Recycle or compost any yard waste and clippings. Get Active. * Make your goals quantifiable (e.g., walk 1 mile three times this week). * Schedule some off days or easy days into your regular workout routine. * Exercise with a partner or a neighbourhood group. Now through Sept. 30, families can check out other tips and small steps to achieving a healthier lifestyle by taking the Pure Life / Best Life Challenge. Led by Bob Greene, families will be empowered to make healthy lifestyle changes with Bob Greene as their personal Challenge coach. By completing simple, everyday milestones, participants can track their progress and inspire others to join in on the interactive fun through social networks, e-mail and Facebook connections. Families can also earn “Healthy Rewards,” such as free water, sporting goods certificates and Best Life memberships by buying cases of Nestle Pure Life and mailing in proofs of purchase. It’s a well-known fact that all over the world people generally put on a few extra kilos during the colder months.

Why is this so?

We tend to eat more when we are cold; this is our body’s natural way of raising our body’s temperature. We also tend not to jump out of bed at 5am and hit the gym or go for a walk.

Here are some tips to keep your good summer habits all through winter.

Exercise

When it’s too cold to hit the streets at 6am and dark by the time you get home from work don’t let all your hard work throughout summer go to waste.

Stock up on exercise DVD’s to keep •you trim and energised.

Basic workout equipment like •resistant bands will keep you toned.

Get a VibraGym - Whole body •vibration technology gets you trim and toned in just 10 minutes a day!

Make the most of the midday •warmth on weekends, take the whole family for a walk or bike ride. Make every movement count, park the car further from the shops, use the stairs not the elevator, do crunches in the commercial breaks of your favourite show!

Nutrition

When summer ends it usually takes with it our passion for salads and fresh fruits and replaces them with cravings for energy-laden stews, casseroles and roast dinners. There are a few things you can do to reduce the calorie attack.

Make sure half your plate is full of •steamed veggies.

Make curries and pasta dishes •low fat by replacing cream with Carnation light & creamy evaporated milk which is 98.5% fat free!

Always opt for tomato-based •sauces in dishes over calorie-laden cream sauces which really blow out the kilojoules.

If you must have desserts then opt •for delicious stewed apples with non fat custard or low fat cheese and fruit.

Snuggling up on the lounge in the •cold evenings watching television is not an excuse to indulge in chips and chocolate! Stick to air popped popcorn and your bikini will still love you come September.

Lifestyle

Winter is nearly here so now is the time to prepare your body for the cold & flu season. Staying healthy during winter can be affected by how well you eat, and your lifestyle habits.

As well as maintaining a healthy life, there are also some home remedies that can help you prevent infections over the winter months.

Green tea – Latest research on •green tea has demonstrated its efficacy in lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and aiding in weight loss. It is known as a great antioxidant, but also a potent virus killer! Changing your coffee to green tea can be beneficial for many areas of your health.

Olive leaf extract – Has increased in •popularity over the past 10 years as a tonic for the prevention of colds & flu’s, and is also used by people with arthritis and high blood pressure with reported benefits. A great winter time supplement.

Goji berries and the latest •antioxidant super fruit, Acai (A-sigh-hee) are rich in Vitamins A,C & E, Iron & Calcium. Great on cereal, in juices, added to trail mixes or as a snack on their own!

Honey, Lemon, Ginger & Chilli – Add •small amounts of each ingredient to a mug and top with boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, then drink for a traditional throat soothing

infection-buster from your own kitchen. A great drink to warm you up on a winter’s day.

It is wise to remember when coming down with a winter cold, that antibiotics are only useful in bacterial infections, not viral infections like influenza. So if your doctor recommends good old-fashioned rest instead of antibiotics, heed his advice! Your recovery can also be improved by having an immune-enhancing remedy dispensed by a qualified Naturopath.

If you feel as though infections may get the better of you his winter, seeing a naturopath before you get sick can be a valuable and effective way to stay healthy. Focused clinically-proven methods are used to boost your immunity and resilience to disease. So don’t waste your winter on colds & flu’s see a naturopath and stay well all year ‘round!

Jennifer Brien and Jodie Baigent are the Naturopaths at Nutriente – Organic Wholefoods & Natural Health Centre and are available for appointments Mon-Sat.

How are you feeling today? Are your energy levels good, or do you feel run down? Have you been eating well, exercising, and drinking plenty of water, or have you been indulging in junk food, drinking too much alcohol and been under stress?

These are pertinent questions to ask yourself in the lead up to the colder months, as your health today, can indicate how well your body will cope with winter infections.

How would you like a drug which could lower your risk of Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, as well as colon cancer? A substance which could lift your mood and relieve headaches? A drug that could lower your risk of getting cavities? Well Good News Coffee appears to be that substance.

Coffee and diabetes

Some studies have shown that coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. After analysing data on 120,000 people over an 18-year period, researchers have concluded that drinking 1 to 3 cups of caffeinated coffee each day can reduce diabetes risk by several percentage points, compared with not drinking coffee at all.

Coffee and Parkinson’s disease

At least 6 studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis have up to 80% lower risks of developing Parkinson’s disease, with 3 of those studies indicating that the more coffee they drink, the lower the risk.

Coffee and Colon Cancer and Gallstones

Other studies indicate that, compared to not drinking coffee, drinking at least 2 cups per day can lead to a 25% lower risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in the risk of liver cirrhosis, and nearly 50% the risk of gallstones.

Coffee and cavities

Some researchers believe another compound called “trigonelline” - which gives coffee its bitter taste and its aroma - may be responsible for giving coffee both anti-adhesive and antibacterial properties which help prevent dental cavities from forming.

Coffee and Headaches

Caffeine is often added to pain medications because it improves their absorption and increases their pain killing effect. Many claim that the caffeine in a strong cup of coffee can help relieve a migraine or even end it if consumed in the very early stage of a headache. It is known that substances that dilate blood vessels, like alcohol, can cause vascular headaches. Substances that constrict blood vessels, like caffeine, can help counter the painful effects of blood vessel dilation in the head.

The recent pandemic of ‘Swine Flu’ is something we should all be aware of. This is the time to start focussing on strengthening and supporting your immune system. The temperature has started to drop and this has given rise to an increase in respiratory infections already.

Protect yourself this season against these stronger strains of viruses by coming into the store and having your zinc levels tested by a qualified Naturopath, who can then advise you on the best form of zinc and co-factors to enhance your immunity.

Zinc is used in over 20 different pathways in our bodies and is therefore an essential nutrient. It is becoming more common to be deficient in zinc. Low levels of zinc have been linked to lowered immunity, susceptibility to infections,

weakened hair and nails as well as poor motor skills and attention-span in children.

Ensure that your zinc status is adequate as this nutrient is not only essential for supporting the immune system but is crucial in digestive health as well. It has been shown that most Coeliac and Crohn’s Disease patients have lowered zinc levels and supplementation of the correct zinc formula can be of real benefit to them.

There are many forms of zinc supplements on the market, but choosing the correct one is essential so speak to our resident Naturopath about the best one for you and your family for this Winter Season.

How many times have you been told to reduce your salt intake? If you’re eating too much of it, that’s fair enough. But if you’re only using a little salt as a condiment, then don’t change the amount you’re using – change the kind of salt you’re using.

Every day we are told about the bad effects of refined foods and salt is no exception. The table and cooking salt we use is almost completely devoid of nutrition. Why? Well, during the refining process up to 82 trace minerals are destroyed by the 1200 degree heating process, leaving only one compound – sodium chloride.

But it’s not only what the manufacturers take out during the refining process; it’s what they put in. Because salt absorbs water from the atmosphere, additives are mixed with it to prevent it from becoming lumpy so it will pour.

The additives are bleaches and anti-caking agents,

such as calcium phosphate monobasic (341), sodium aluminosilicate (554), and aluminium calcium silicate (556). We could just as easily be pouring concrete into our veins!!!

You don’t have to eat refined salt. At Wray Organic, in Newmarket and Indooroopilly, we stock a full range of unrefined sea salts that contain all 84 of the minerals that we need for good health. Sure they are not sparkling white and you will

have to throw out the salt shaker as the unrefined sea salt will clog it up. But food cooked with natural unrefined sea salt tastes better; you will be supplying your body with necessary minerals and trace elements, and your salt craving will be lessened. Every time you eat sea salt from your Wray Organic store you are actually eating a multi-mineral complex.Look for Celtic sea salt in our bulk bins or any one of our packaged sea salts.

THE GOOD SALT By Deborah Wray

Safety or Smothering?Do you let your kids ride their bikes to school? Go to the local park on their own to play with friends? Ride the bus to the local library to research school work? Do you let them go anywhere on there own or do you imagine the bogeyman lurking behind every tree!

Are we doing such a good job of protecting our children that we are actually stopping them from flourishing? We feel we have to protect them, we feel the world is no longer safe. You’ll spend days hearing a news story about a child who was abducted so far from you, yet it feels immediate.

We have lost confidence in everything; our neighbourhood, our kids and our ability to teach our children how to get by in the world, as a result we batten down the hatches! So how are our kids supposed to learn how to navigate the world?

Remember your childhood? If it was anything like mine you’d walk home from school, let yourself in; make yourself a sandwich while your Mum and Dad were still at work.

You’d spend all weekend on your bike with friends and only come home when you wanted something to eat. Remember? Remember how liberating that felt? We felt responsible and trusted and that gave us an incredible sense of worth. You cannot buy that kind of learning experience. Why take that away from our kids, because we are scared?

The thought of anything happening to my kids or anyone’s children makes me feel physically sick and I cannot begin to imagine

how parents who have had a child taken deal with life after, but it still remains a fact that child abduction in Australia in a very rare occurrence and according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics the crime rate has not increased since we were children.

So how do we as parents protect and care for our kids whilst still letting them have the right of passage to experience the world? I have three children aged 11, 8 and 5 and have educated them all on stranger danger and their Father has taught all of them basic self defence. Last year my eldest two children asked to be allowed to walk to school. My immediate reaction was no! I can just as easily drive them and the walk entailed crossing a major road.

But then I looked at these two intelligent individuals and realised all they were asking for was my trust and reassurance that I believed they were quite capable of walking 5 minutes down the road and using the proper crossing and I said yes! Off they went with their backpacks on, shoulders back and proud and my heart nearly burst.

I will not lie and say that my hands didn’t shake slightly and I felt a bit edgy all day till I collected them at 3pm, but there they were, safe, happy and all ready to do it again the next day. And every time they did walk to school my nerves eased a little. I now allow all three girls to go to the park at the end of street for an hour to play with many strict instructions! They have never come late and always come back smiling.

Every parent wants to keep their children safe from harm, but don’t our kids also deserve to experience the world, to learn to trust their own instincts and feel that sense of freedom and responsibility we did!

(ARA) – This year, skip the cold-weather cleaning and organize your digital world, which as most of us know, can be a huge mess. Lorie Marrero, certified professional organizer, author and founder of ClutterDiet.com, recommends four easy tips to get digitally organized: Unclutter Your Desktop Treat your desktop as you would the top of your actual desk and keep only active files and shortcuts there for convenience. Use your My Documents folders for more lasting storage. Get Your Files in Order Consider consolidation. Are there old files you can remove, or drafts that are no longer relevant? Remember, archiving to a folder or external storage space is usually a better use of time than wading through lots of old documents. Organize Your Online Activities Consolidate online activities in one place with Windows Live. Partnerships with popular sites -- including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and MySpace -- allow you to import content like digital photos, tweets and Facebook updates into your Windows Live ‘What’s New’ feed so you can share content with the people in your network from one site.

Optimize Your Computer’s Performance For greater efficiency and avoiding the heartache of technical problems, remember to update and run important utilities like spyware and virus scans and defragment your hard drive periodically.

Easy solutions to clean up your digital life

Here is a humorous yet very accurate message which clearly demonstrates the importance of advertising:

“A business owner wakes up in the morning in his advertised pajamas, after sleeping on an advertised bed. He shaves with an advertised razor and advertised shaving cream. He bathes in an advertised tub, washes his body clean with advertised soap, washes his hair with advertised shampoo. He uses advertised toilet paper. He gets dressed in advertised clothing and shoes. He eats cereal and orange juice which has been advertised. He looks at his advertised watch to ensure he is not late for the office. He drives to the office in a car that has been advertised.

When at work he sits behind an advertised desk, on an advertised chair in front of an advertised computer and writes with an advertised pen. Yet this man will not advertise saying that advertising does not pay. Finally when his business fails, he will advertise it for sale.”

This is a tale being played out by small businesses all over Australia because of the economic downturn. This is better time than any to start advertising your business. During an economic downturn, a strong advertising effort enables a company to solidify its customer base, take business away from less aggressive competitors, and positions itself for growth during the recovery. The trick is to advertise effectively.

10 Tools for Advertising Effectively

THE HEADLINE IS KING1. Attention grabbing headlines pull your target audience into your marketing message. Great copy should do four things: grab attention, build interest, create desire and force the reader to take action. (AIDA -Attention, Interest, Desire, Action).

A SINGLE CLEAR MESSAGE2. Keep your copy short, to the point and everything you say should support your headline or your focal point message.

APPEAL TO YOUR AUDIENCE3. Emotional triggers are very powerful advertising copy tools. Things such as the need for friendship, the need for security, the need to achieve, the need for education, the need to lead are emotional triggers. Figure out what emotional trigger is best suited for your goods or services and then build a unique selling message around the need.

DEVELOP A CONSISTENT THEM 4. AND STYLEDevelop a central them and personality and consistently use your theme or personality in all advertising and marketing copy. Consistency is the key, if not the most important , requirements for building brand recognition and awareness.

CREDIBILITY COUNTS5. Back up your claims with facts and proof. If you say you are number one at providing customer service then tell people how you got there. If you say that people benefit from doing business with you get testimonials and include in advertisement.

CALL TO ACTION6. Motivate your customers to act NOW. Use deadlines to create a sense of urgency or boost the appeal of your offer such as free delivery, extended warranty etc.

KEEP YOUR “DRIVERS” IN MIND7. Always keep what drives your customers to buy in mind. Do they shop based on convenience, image price, value, quality or service?

PROJECT A PROFESSIONAL IMAGE8. Ensure your marketing materials always look professional and highly polished.

PRICING SENSITIVITIES9. In our economic climate, unless you have some really big news to reveal in price then underplay its involvement in your copy. Consumers are not wowed by 10 percent or even 25 percent off. This is too commonplace; consumers expect 50% or more if pricing is to be a factor in advertising copy.

ASK FOR THE SALE10. Never assume that your reader will know what to do next, tell them what to do and tell them to buy. Come to the store, drop by the showroom, visit the Website, call and order now- your wording will be in direct relationship to what you want readers to do.

HOW A “RIBO” SURVIVES A RECESSION

The RIBO is a business term I use for “Resourceful Independent Business Owner”.

The RIBO comes from all walks of life but has one all encompassing goal; to establish a business that runs without him. In order to do this a RIBO understands the following golden rules:

Sales and Marketing is the most 1. important aspect of any business. Education and execution in sales and marketing strategy is the ultimate key in prospering for any business.

Accounting and cash flow 2. management comes a close second to sales and marketing. Learn to be an accountant but don’t be the accountant. Understanding where the money comes from and where it is going is crucial.

Is this a job I am creating myself or 3. is it truly a business. If it is a job, rethink your strategy.

Have trust In people. If you do not 4. have faith in your staff to carry out a task, why are they on the payroll.

When hiring, Attitude is more 5. important than Aptitude. You can train a person with the right attitude, but a person with the wrong attitude is cancer for your business.

Everyone has a gift. If a staff member 6. is not performing well in a particular area of your organization, but has a great attitude, and retraining has not helped, maybe their gifts lie elsewhere.

The RIBO understands that a recession provides great opportunities for the independent business owner, opportunities that would not have presented itself until now.

Many businesses will start reducing their marketing efforts, thinking that reducing marketing costs will save them money. RIBO’s know that this is the wrong place to save money; this is where the marketing efforts must be increased.

RIBO’s increase their marketing spends during a downturn because they know:

It protects their market position 1.

Current and future sales are not in 2. jeopardy

Others are reducing marketing 3. spend, so it automatically increase “Share of Mind”

It creates an image of corporate 4. stability The RIBO is conscious that all marketing must be tested and measured. If it is not tested and measured how else the RIBO will know that his marketing efforts are a true investment and not a cost to the business.

(ARA)- With award season in full swing, all eyes are on celebrities and their red carpet style. For every A-lister, looking great at an awards show is almost as important as remembering an acceptance speech. While most celebrities have a team to get them picture perfect, there are some simple tricks you can do at home to make sure you’re camera ready for your next big event whether it’s a first date or family reunion. Giuliana Rancic, host of E! News and a red carpet staple, shares some simple beauty tips that are sure to make you look and feel your best all night long -- without a celebrity-sized budget. Hydrate: Give yourself a healthy and glowing complexion by getting plenty of rest the night before the event, and stay hydrated during the day. When water gets too boring, add a splash of cranberry or pomegranate juice. The antioxidants will add to your glow. Relax: If you’re prone to getting pre-event jitters, it’s important to find a way to relax beforehand so you can arrive feeling your best. Remember that confidence shows. To de-stress, she suggests meeting a friend for yoga, getting a full body massage or putting on some fun music to dance around to as you get ready. Be prepared: Try on your outfit the day before to assure that you have the right shoes and accessories. You’ll feel much more relaxed on the day of the big event knowing that you have everything ready. It also pays

to have a Plan B outfit in mind, just in case. And while you have your outfit on, pull out your digital camera and snap a couple photos of yourself to practice finding your picture-perfect pose the way models do. Say cheese: You can count on there being photos taken at any big event, so your smile needs to be camera-ready. A lip stain is your best bet for long-lasting lip color, and a bold shade will make your smile extra eye-catching. Of course, no matter how bright the color, it can’t hide dull teeth. Giuliana swears by Crest Whitestrips to make sure her teeth are sparkling before the big event. “My latest beauty secret is to use new Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal two weeks before my big event. Because the strips mold to my teeth, I can talk, drink water and go about my routine while I’m wearing them! They fit perfectly into my busy schedule.” Finally, eat right: You don’t want to be hungry during the event, but you also need to look your best in that dress. On the day of a big event, eat a small meal with protein in the morning, like an egg white omelet with veggies and feta cheese. Then, in the afternoon, stick with liquids like a fruit smoothie, which gives you energy without making you feel too full or bloated. Following these simple steps will help you feel like you had your own personal glam squad for your next big night out. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Be Quick! Packages expire 31 May, 2009!

Balanced Newspapers North West Edition May 2009 Pg 14

Your passion could get the better of your with Mars and Venus activating your Sun sign this month. Impulse excitement and something a little different is what will motivate you in your search for love. Be careful that you don’t allow blinkered vision to lead you up the garden path, particularly between the 5th and 10th.

It’s a fun filled month during May however you may overdo it so try to be more frugal with your eating and dietary habits but also the hours that you keep. You’re likely to feel energized between the 3rd and the 5th but by the 15th could feel rather run down or perhaps even exhausted. This is a time to honor your body’s needs and to look after your health.

You are about to complete a new financial cycle which offers you the opportunity to spread your wings and fly in a direction that will give you more career fulfillment. A wonderful opportunity to move into a coveted position may occur after the 17th. Be prepared to make some quick changes at this time.

Even if an idea seems feasible this month beware of the fraudster Cancer. You may be gullible possibly because you’re feeling a little vulnerable in your personal life just now. You feel intense and manipulated in your relationships and this requires you to be stronger by putting your foot down. Redirect some of those negative energies into your work and you can produce something of value. By the 25th you should feel the fog lifting.

You mustn’t feel negative about opportunities that present themselves now even if you’re not clear on the bigger picture. You have to trust the process and go with your heart. Between the 17th and 22nd changes in your domestic sphere may also be spotlighted, however don’t spread yourself too thin. If you do, you’ll do neither i.e. your work nor the move, well.

If you’re having some ongoing disputes over money or possessions you only have yourself to blame Virgo. You need to understand that to independently manage your wealth you need to take control of it. If you’ve been lazy and given it over to someone else to manage that is your dilemma just now. It is never too late to reclaim your power and this is the month to do it.

Don’t seek any reward for the help you offer someone this month or you’ll be bitterly disappointed. Your compassionate gestures should be selfless; otherwise you’ll feel as if you’ve been helping someone to no avail. Furthermore your help may actually fall on deaf ears anyhow. Just because you feel you have the solution to someone’s woes doesn’t mean they will act on it. Between the 4th and 7th you could be drawn into someone else’s complex personal issues.

Unexpected changes in your work routine, especially if they are dictated by someone who is not so friendly to you, could create hostility. You need to be on your best behavior even if the chips don’t fall where you would like them to. Many Scorpios will feel that a rest is in order so don’t feel guilty about taking time out and being a little lazy. You deserve it.

An abrupt change in your home circumstances will be a little troubling at first but will afford you a pleasant development in your life’s circumstances. You should embrace these changes wholeheartedly and see where they lead you. A female may instigate some of these changes around the 14th so keep an open mind and don’t retaliate until you hear the full story.

Making changes in your personal life will take longer than you expect so this could be a little frustrating. There could be obstructions or people questioning your motives. If you trust your own decisions you needn’t pay too much attention to those who would otherwise spoil your effective strategy. But having said that, you’ll have to be prepared to take on some additional responsibilities as others back away. You’ve never been scared of hard work so why would this bother you?

You can finally discharge a debt and breathe a sigh of relief this month. The first week of the month is important in effectively re-evaluating your financial strategies. If you’ve been diligent in analyzing your accounts you might point the finger at someone when you discover an error. Don’t be premature as this is simply an oversight on your part and could cause you an embarrassment later when you discover the truth.

You have some unexplainable desires which you feel compelled to fulfill this month. This is akin to a passionate flame springing forth from the depths of your being and you’ll be forced to follow this impulse in spite of yourself. This will be a very satisfying experience given the position of Saturn and the inhibitions it has been causing on your love life for some time now. Create some new friendships between the 3rd and 6th even if you don’t feel particularly up to it. You’ll be satisfied at making the extra effort.
