the past few weeks, the Summer is finally

in full swing! The sea or the swimming

pool is the favored place of many at the

moment I’m sure.

Understanding SEO ...

In business, a lot of us understand the

need for a website, but sadly many of us

complain they just don't work, that the

return on investment is hard to justify.

Unfortunately most people who design

websites just don't understand the

importance of SEO, which means Search

Engine Optimisation.

Preparing your website to rank well in the

search engines needs to be done at the

very beginning, even before the first page

is created, or you face costly 'improve-

ments' to your website that in all

likelihood mean your site will look the

same but be better structured to rank.

The code used in your website is

Coconut Crab (Birgus latro) is the

largest terrestrial arthropod in the world.

It is known for its ability to crack

coconuts with its strong pincers

in order to eat the contents. It is some-

times called the robber crab because

some coconut crabs are rumored to

steal shiny items such as pots and

silverware from houses and tents .

The coconut crab is a large edible land

crab related to the hermit crab, and are

found in the tropical Indian and Pacific

Oceans .

They eat coconuts for a living! How would

you like to be on an island and come

across a crab that is more than 3 feet

from head to tail and weighs up to 40

pounds, with a pair of large pincers

strong enough to open coconuts!

They can climb trees too, but they only

eat coconuts that have already fallen to

the ground.

Coconut crab meat has been considered

a local delicacy.

And we're afraid of spiders??!!!!

Steps to take to achieve that

While tanning in the sun is not a healthy

option, it doesn't mean you can't be

pleasantly bronzed via other means, with

Healthy and tasty summer eating

Summer means more outdoor exercise,

but also beach, pool, and garden parties

with (let’s face it) lots of drinking. Plus,

it’s hot, and (if you’re where we are) way

too humid. We all love a good summer

afternoon picnic or barbecue, but heat

waves and multiple mojitos can leave us

feeling exhausted and sluggish.

.

With all that time in the sun there are a

few important tips you should remember

for peak health for the coming months…

Heat slows the body’s metabolism so you

need fewer calories in summer than you

do in winter because your body doesn’t

have to create as much heat on its own.

To avoid gaining weight during the

summer follow these four tips;-

• Eat low calorie, nutrient-rich foods like

fruits and vegetables. They supply a

great source of water and potassium,

which are lost in sweat.

• Try to get protein mainly from vegetar-

ian sources like soy and lentils, as well

as limited amounts from fish.

• Limit your intake of foods that are

nutrient-poor. These include anything

found in a package, rich in fats and

carbohydrates, and lacking in essential

nutrients.

•Much of how we feel during the summer

has to do with our hydration status. Both

sweating and alcohol can dehydrate us,

so pump up your water drinking with 2-4

glasses more than your norm (10 glasses

a day for most people).

Picnic the Healthy Way

Eating outside under the sun, with the

crash of waves on the beach or the wind

through the trees as your musical accom-

paniment, makes any meal taste better.

Here are some ways to ensure that dining

al fresco doesn't translate to dining al

fatso.

First, a healthy salad is a great choice.

The more multicoloured it is, the better it

is for you. Choose from green, red and

yellow peppers, tomato, cucumber,

grated carrot, sliced beetroot, avocado,

lettuce and other salad leaves.

Dress the salad with a squeeze of lemon

juice and some extra virgin olive oil (this

has 'good' fat content) and fresh herbs

such as parsley or mint, or use balsamic

vinegar.

Picnics are an easy way to get some of

your five a day (the five portions of fruit

and vegetables a day that we all need).

Eating a variety of fruit and veg ensures

that you're getting lots of vitamins and

minerals, and they're low in fat but high

in fibre.

Include raw vegetables in your hamper.

Peppers are a good source of vitamin C,

and celery helps to reduce high blood

pressure. Cherry tomatoes, sweet corn

cobs and raw carrots all make simple,

healthy finger food. They can be dipped

in salsa or hummus, which is a source of

fibre, vitamin B and vegetable proteins.

(Don't have too much hummus, though,

as it can be high in fat.)

Filling up

You’ll need some carbohydrates to

provide you with some slow-burn energy

for all the games you’ll be playing after

lunch. Wholegrain bread, rolls, pitta and

tortilla wraps are high in vitamins and

releases energy slowly. Add low-fat mar-

garine spread (if you need it).

You’ll need some protein. Pack some

freshly sliced cold meats into your cool

bag and use them as sandwich fillers.

You could try turkey, ham, chicken or

beef slices. Buy it freshly sliced from a

deli counter as the pre-packed varieties

may contain additives.

Sausages are another source of protein.

Use ones with a high meat, low-fat

content. Grill them instead of frying

them, so that the fat drips away.

Pasta or potato salads are good for

picnics (but don’t use mayonnaise). Don't

use salt to add flavour: instead, try

spring onions, garlic, black pepper or

other spices, or herbs.

grapes or pineapple chunks. There are

plenty of options.

If you don’t fancy chocolate, pack

portions of fruit, apples, bananas and

oranges are tasty desserts. Or try low-fat

yoghurts, fruit salad, or muesli with greek

yoghurt. These are all light and refresh-

ing, and will fill you up and provide you

with natural sugars for energy. And

there's no need to feel guilty as you enjoy

them.

Let the games begin. As well as the food,

games are a fun part of a picnic.

ED: What is CAB?

Myra: CAB is the abbreviated form of

Costa Advice Bureau.

ED: What is the Costa Advice Bureau and

what services do they offer?

Myra: CAB is an independent, non

Government funded company that can

help to resolve your legal and any other

problems that you may be experiencing

whilst living, working, or holidaying on

the coast. We provide impartial inde-

pendent and confidential advice. Costs

for our services are minimal for members

of Costa Advice Bureau. (see a list of

some of the many services we offer on

the opposite page)..

ED: How did CAB evolve?

Myra: In the year 1995 I made my way to

the head quarters of what to be an up

and coming political part solely with the

intention of finding solutions to the

routine problems that were almost

impossible to solve and affected both

myself and many property owners. Each

year that followed the purchase of a

property in 1970 was problem filled.

What were supposed to be my relaxed,

annual family holiday breaks on the

Costa would turn into a bureaucratic

nightmare. I asked the new party for

assistance to these problems and

without being given a solution I was

somehow roped in to assist with these

exact issues. I was asked to make a list

of the many problems that faced the non

Spanish community who came to live or

purchase a holiday home on the Costa

del Sol. We discussed the need for an

office to deal with these matters. I

became more involved out of the need to

see change for both the Spanish and non

Spanish to overcome an ancient and non

functioning system. Out of this was born

the first foreigners department in

Estepona which opened its doors in

1997.

In 1998 I was called upon by the same

party and asked if I would become a

coordinator for the foreign community in

the municipality of San Roque . The

following elections would be the first in

Spain where the European community

would have a vote and a voice in the

running of their community. I started

discovering the immense problems that

this community faced on a daily basis.

Besides designing the European commu-

nity’s right to vote campaign for this

group of people I became what could only

be described as a glorified troubleshooter.

I now had to find my way around this

antiquated governmental system and

find solutions for problems too numerous

to mention. After the elections and the

realization that the foreigners offices

which had started to pop up in various

communities were not independent and

were obviously not in the position able to

take on every aspect of the communities

many problems or to act as their lawyer,

accountant or even ethically suggest any

reliable service provider.

With this in mind and the continual

requests for assistance I conceived the

idea of setting up an independent and

impartial office to assist and advise.

This office could not and would not be

government funded as in Spain there is

no such body as a citizen’s advice

bureau. This does allow CAB to remain

neutral.

The first CAB office was opened in

Estepona in 2007. This was to be trial

and error as to how this could be kept

open financially.

As the numbers of people grew so did the

problems that were being presented to

us. So from basically starting with issues

like negotiating with town halls including

the planning department, tax returns, the

utilities and more complicated legal

issues CAB added more services to the

list of our activities.

The need for such a service in many

other areas in Spain became apparent

and for this reason CAB will be opening

its new office in Mijas in September of

this year.

ED: Is this a free service?

Myra: No, as I said earlier, this is not a

Government funded service. This is the

only way we can stay independent and

offer unbiased and impartial advice to

our memebers. If, like other foreigners

departments, we were funded by the

Government (in power at the present

time!) then our advice would be free but

not impartial ... we would be representing

our local party’s views. We would not be

putting our clients priorities first.

We ask only a minimal fee of €95 plus

IVA for an annual family membership.

This membership entintles you to a list of

free advice services and 20% discount

on our general fees.

Between November 2006 and June 2009

Spain went undefeated for a record tying

35 consecutive matches before their loss

to the United States, a record shared with

Brazil, including a record 15-game winning

streak and thus earning third place in the

FIFA Confederations Cup.

The odds of Spain winning the 2010 World

Cup were 4 to 1.

They were joint favorites, with Brazil, and

were backed by the world’s greatest ever

player, Pele, to claim their first champi-

onship. Following a flawless qualifying

campaign, winning ten out of ten, Spain

were the number one team in the FIFA

rankings.

This World Cup was a Celebration of Firsts:

South Africa were the first African hosts

(and what a fabulous job they did too!)

The United States won its group for the

first time since 1930.

Spain are the first European country to win

the title when the event was held off-con-

tinent.

Spain are the first to win after losing their

opening game.

Spain are the first European champion to

win since West Germany in 1974.

At the time of writing this,

the party is still in full

swing … the passion is

alive, Spain is living a

dream … as very well

deserved winners of the

FIFA 2010 World Cup.

I intentionally didn’t feature the event in

the last issue as I was certain every other

publication would do so. However, having

followed the Spanish team every step of

the way I felt they at least deserved a

mention in our little mag. I do not claim to

be an expert of the game, merely an

observer passing comment on what was a

spectacular event.

So, apologies to all you non football lovers,

here are some interesting bits and bobs

about footie and in particular, why Spain

so deserved to win … maybe England could

learn a lesson or two from them!

Spain are the first to win after having been

humiliated by the Americans a year earlier.

All of Europe’s five FIFA World Cup winners

have lifted the Trophy at the end of their

first Final, after Spain emulated Italy,

Germany, England and France.

32 years after Argentina’s Daniel Bertoni

scored the last extra-time goal in a FIFA

World Cup Final, Spain’s Andres Iniesta

repeated the feat.

The Spanish Success Story:

Its ledger since 2006 is quite astounding:

50 victories, 2 losses, 2 draws. The losses

came to the US, by a 2-0 count in last

year’s Confederations Cup in South Africa,

and to Switzerland in its Cup group

opening game. Since that match Spain

allowed only one goal (to Chile) and ended

the tournament with a streak of 433

scoreless minutes.

What’s an intriguing Spanish tale, of

course, is that a man from Madrid

(Casillas) saved the match and a man from

Barcelona (Iniesta) won it. Proving that

despite strong club rivalries, the country

comes first!

The victory sees Spain become only the

third nation to hold the European and

world football crowns at the same time,

two years on from their European Champi-

onships success in Vienna.

Spain has not always shown such support

for their national team. As recently as five

years ago the country mocked the national

team. Only when Spain began to do well at

the European Championships in 2008 did

the country show any interest in the

national side. Even then it was only come

the semi final that the country got excited

about their national team.

Having been a Liverpool fan since an

earlier age I was disappointed by the per-

formance of Fernando Torres (El Niño). I

have since learnt that the way the Spanish

national team play does not suit El Niño.

His continuing frustration comes from the

fact that the neat passing game Spain play

often leaves him as a spectator. He is

much better running on to a distant pass.

He is very dangerous picking up a long

ball. He has done that for Liverpool so

often and so well. But Spain do not play

that way. Unfortunately for Torres, he

typifies England team players rather than

his national side.

So what are the glaring differences

between the English & Spanish teams?

I’m sure some of you will dislike me for

saying this but England are light years

away from being as good a team as Spain

A lot of the demise of the quality and

attitude of England players may well be

blamed on television. The moment the

footballing authorities took the Sky money,

the domestic game was always going to

rule supreme. Rather than developping

home grown youth talent, clubs spent for-

tunes on buying foreign footballers.

That was a big mistake the true cost of

which we are only witnessing now.

sThe obsession with the Premiership and

the dominance of the domestic game has

been so detrimental to the national team.

Playing for your country now means little

to most of the millionaire footballers who

are chosen to wear the three lions shirt.

Sure, the likes of Villa, Iniesta and Xavi

are paid well in Spain. The difference is

that they have pride. They actually want

to play for their national team and they

want to play well.

The relationship of the two teams with

the press and media is a glaring differ-

ence. Spanish football reporters, from

newspapers, TV and Radio were allowed

into team dressing rooms to interview

players after a game. The press were on

the plane bringing the victorious team

back to Madrid. The main football TV

presenters were on the plane celebrating

with the players. There is a mutual trust

between the players and the press. You

only have to look at the videos posted on

youtube if you missed them on national

television.

In Spain, many players are friends with

those who write or broadcast about them.

The Spanish Capitain is maybe a wee bit

friendlier than

others …

Even the Spanish royal family were

televised expressing their elation and

frustrations during the final matches.

Reina Sofia even visited the team’s

dressing room (with Pujol still dressed

only in his towel may we add!)

So that’s my rant over. Be I right or be I

wrong .. let us just celebrate the fact that

a team that believes in playing football

the right way are Champions of both

Europe and the World.

The entertainment factor was superb.

South Africa did us proud with their

ceremonies and organisation of the

whole event and the music of Shakira

(Waka Waka), K’naan & Bisbal (Waving

Flag ) will be with us forever ...

The Spanish flags will no doubt continue

to wave for a very long time from now and

why shouldn’t they.

Here’s to the Spanish passion ... for the

wonderful game of football and for life in

general. This has been one hell of a party

... ¡ Vive España! ¡ Vive la Roja !

August is a quiet month in Ronda, most

Rondeños prefer to stay indoors away

from the heat, or take their families to

the beach before the next school year be-

gins. For visitors to the city this means

peace and quiet, albeit with a lot of heat.

Every year in Au-

gust the Abul

Beka association

invites some of

the most exciting

folklore acts from

around the world

to Ronda, and

every plaza comes

alive with interna-

tional acts before

coming together

to compete in the

gala night for the award of best folklore

act.

In September Ronda will come alive with

the Pedro Romero Feria, and the sister

fiesta, the Corrida Goyesca, both of

which are internationally known and

bring to our little mountain city some of

the biggest celebrities and royalty.

Rondeños are proud of the Corrida

Goyesca, three days of bullfighting, in

fact the only bullfights that are ever held

in the Plaza de Toros, which is this year

celebrating 225 years since it was

constructed.

Taking inspiration from Goya's paintings

of magnificent bullfighters resplendent in

costume, and the ladies who accompa-

nied them, the bullfighters arrive in

period dress, whilst the Goyesca dames

are feted around the city as befitting

princesses.

Despite the high summer temperatures,

Ronda is generally much cooler than

other inland cities such as Sevilla, in fact

the average August day hovers around

the low 30s, compared with low 40s in

other cities, so a day out in Ronda could

be just what you need to recharge your

batteries.

For keen walkers this is a time of year

when many of the public walks are closed

to avoid the potential of fire, however low

lying river valleys such as the Genal from

Igualeja to Cartajima can be very

pleasant, and are a nature lovers dream.

Historical & Botanical Gardens...It is rare these days to find a hidden gem, we

have however found one in these fantastic

gardens.

Expecting Palm trees and Olive bushes, what

we found transported us to places all over the

world. In the cool shades of such a fantastic

variation of trees & shrubs interspersed with

water falls and ponds you can lose yourself for

hours walking along the well kept footpaths.

To cater for all they have various routes for

those who want a quick trip, even suitable for

wheelchairs up to to the long haul with almost

a mile of trail.

1855-1990:The origins of La Concepción can

be traced back to the merging of several es-

tates located to the north of the city of

Malaga. These were home to olive and al-

mond trees and vines, though the citrus trees

were the most numerous. The gardens’ cre-

ators were Jorge Loring Oyarzabal and Amalia

Heredia Livermore, who purchased the land

on which they stand around 1855. According

to written records of the time, they had origi-

nally come up with the idea of a garden seven

years earlier while on their honeymoon, which

saw them embark upon on a tour of Europe.

The Marquis and Marchioness’ comfortable

economic situation coupled with their first-

hand experience of some of Europe’s finest

gardens and their commercial dealings

abroad enabled them to cultivate the most ex-

otic of plant species from around the world. To

ensure their dream came to fruition, they en-

listed the services of a French gardener,

Chamousst, who selected and planted the

gardens’ flora, an endeavour for which he was

awarded a number of prizes, as witnessed by

newspaper reports of the late XIX century.

La Concepción quickly earned itself a fine rep-

utation throughout Europe, though not for its

exuberantly beautiful gardens; the source of

this renown was in fact the magnificent col-

lection of archaeological remains on display

in the Loring Museum, a small, Doric-style

building erected on the site of a Roman mo-

saic discovered in Cartama depicting the feats

of Hercules

For many years, the Lorings strove to restore

all of the archaeological remains that they en-

countered. Without doubt, the most signifi-

cant of these was the Lex Flavia Malacitana,

a bronze piece bearing the Roman laws that

governed Malaga in the year 80 AD which now

resides in the National Archaeology Museum.

Following the death of its owners and the fam-

ily’s economic decline, La Concepción was

bought in 1911 by a married couple from Bil-

bao, the Echevarria-Echevarrietas, who ex-

tended the gardens by creating a number of

new areas.

1990-2006: In 1990, the entire estate (a total

of 49 hectares, taking into account the histor-

ical garden plus the surrounding agricultural

and forest land) was purchased by Malaga

City Council for 600 million pesetas

(€3,606,073). In 1991, the “City of Malaga”

Municipal Botanical Trust was founded to run

and administer the estate.The construction of

El Limonero reservoir saw these 49 hectares

of land divided into two sections by a road: 26

of these were declared green belt, with the re-

maining 23 enclosed hectares making up La

Concepción Historical-Botanical Gardens.

Once the necessary infrastructure and up-

grading work had been carried out, it was

opened to the public in 1994 with two main

aims: the conservation and improvement of

the historical garden and the creation on the

estate of a botanical garden (a cultural, edu-

cational and scientific centre connected with

the world of plants with the majority of its

species on display in living collections).

Historical heritage:La Concepción boasts an

equally significant historical heritage. In the

XIX century, La Concepción served as a meet-

ing point for a whole host of illustrious figures

of the time. Politicians, artists, aristocrats and

the noble Malaga bourgeoisie all frequented

its gardens. As a result, a number of distin-

guished buildings were erected here: the mag-

nificent Stately Home, the cypress house, the

administrator’s house, the gardener’s hut and

the schoolhouse; two iron greenhouses; a

large arbour; fountains, footbridges, flights of

steps, a delightful viewpoint, and, most im-

pressive of all, the Loring Museum, a small,

Doric-style building which housed the archae-

ological discoveries unearthed in the excava-

tions financed by the estate’s first owners.

“¡Quien no ha visto Sevilla – no ha

visto Maravilla!” (“he who has not

seen Sevilla - has not seen a miracle”) is

the famous Spanish saying about the

capital city of Andalucia.

To me it’s a

miracle that

so many

people living

on the Costa

del Sol have

NOT been to

Sevilla. To

me it’s a Spanish city to rival Barcelona

in terms of wonderful things to see and

do and it’s definitely one of my favourite

cities in the world.

When many people think of Sevilla (or

Seville, as the English like to call it -

don’t ask me why!) they think of the

clichés. It’s the city of orange trees

(true, but visit at the beginning of May

when it’s the city of orange blossom), of

Flamenco (true too, and most of Spain’s

best artistes come from here) and of

Carmen. Poor Carmen was a figment of

French author Prosper Merimee’s imagi-

nation, but the tobacco factory is still

there and the people of Sevilla have so

taken Carmen’s story to heart that

they’ve placed a statue of her outside the

famous Maestranza bullring, where she

supposedly met her end at the hands of

her lover.

won’t be disappointed. The cathedral is

the largest in Europe (and wonderfully

cool on a hot day), the Real Alcázar is like

a smaller version of the Alhambra and

has lovely gardens and of course the

maze-like streets of the Barrio Santa

Cruz are as unique and charming as ever.

You can happily take the tourist bus

around the city or a boat cruise on the

Rio Guadalquivir along with the millions

of other tourists who flock here every

year, but Sevilla has so much more to

offer its visitors.

If you know where to look (or book with

Camino Holidays!) you can find more

interesting, beautiful and unique parts of

Sevilla. From the smaller palaces open

to visitors to Sevilla’s Las Bellas Artes,

(one of the 15 galleries based in this city)

Spain’s most prestigious gallery after the

Guggenheim and the Prado, you have

many wonderful museums to choose

from. My favourite is the Flamenco

Museum in the heart of Santa Cruz,

where not only can you enjoy the interac-

tive exhibits, but you can catch one of

the best Flamenco shows in town.

Sevilla is known as

shopping is excellent

here, from large

branches of Spanish

favourites El Corte

Ingles, Zara and

Mango to a wealth of

small independent

shops. If you like

Spanish ceramics then the very best

place to buy them in the world is their

cultural heart – the barrio of Triana.

Here generations of artisan families have

made them in the back, and sold them in

the front!

What else – well, you should visit the

trendy Alameda area, filled with great

little bars and restaurants, the Aire de

Sevilla in the restored Arabic baths and

now one of the most wonderful and

unique day spas in Europe and the

Flamenco bars of Calle Betis at night.

Really this only scratches the surface of

all there is to do in this legendary city.

So many places fail to live up to their

reputation: Sevilla is one Spanish desti-

nation which surpasses it in every way!

20th ADANA Dog Show ...Only two years after the foundation of ADANA,

the animal rescue charity, the first dog show

for mixed breeds and other dogs was staged

in Estepona. This year the show reaches 20

and plans a very special event.

On Sunday 19 September the 20th show will

be staged in the Palacio de Congresos in

Estepona for the first time. There will be 5

obedience classes, 5 agility classes and 10

variety and novelty classes. A wide selection

of commercial stalls will offer all sorts of pet

related and other goodies. There will also be

a cafe and a bar.

"It is wonderful not to have to worry about the

weather or forest fires this year", said David

McNally, the show organiser. "Over the years

we have had to deal with biblical rains which

washed away the access roads, torrid heat

which was too much for the dogs and last year

we had the forest fire on the site just a few

days before the show."

The main focus for this year is children and

their dogs. So there are several opportunities

for junior handlers to show off their skills. We

hope to have a demonstration of mainly ex

ADANA dogs who now work for the police and

armed services.

The doors open at 10am for registration and

judging starts at 11.00 on the dot. Admission

is 5 € for adults but accompanied children get

in free. Entry to classes is 4€. Entry forms

A Question of Personality…Some dogs are so laid-back, they can

only be described as couch potatoes;

some are hyperactive; some are Don

Quixote types, permanently and vigor-

ously defending themselves and their

loved ones from imaginary enemies, in

the form of any moving object that hap-

pens to cross their path of vision. Then

you have the quality control freaks, those

who are hell-bent on ascertaining that

each and every object is exactly what it

says on the tin…

These types will chew table-legs to the

core, to ensure they are made of real

wood; they will chew your new designer

shoes to bits, just to make sure you

haven’t wasted your money by buying a

fake pair; they will chew vital documents,

your underwear, live wires – the list goes

on and on… They are especially inter-

ested in the quality of sofas; they will

scratch (and scratch and scratch) at the

surface fabric until a tiny hole appears

(this is the point at which - assuming you

were present, which of course, you are

not – you could say “adios” forever to

your precious sofa) and they discover…

ity stuff indeed! Pure bliss!!

had the misfortune of being confronted

Ajo Blanco must be one of the most

refreshing things ever. It´s roots come

from Andalucían peasant farmers who

had easy access to the ingredients. It

made a refreshing and sustaining lunch,

blended by brute force using a mortar

and pestle and thinned using cool well

water. It´s a great vehicle to demonstrate

how Sherry Vinegar can enhance the

flavor of a dish. In class I always add it

bit by bit, letting guests taste the differ-

ence each additional teaspoon makes.

Even though she had just finished a gru-

eling week catering for a group of 30 peo-

ple in Robert Kilroy-Silk’s private villa in

Casares, this is the impression I derived

from my first meeting with Anne Manson,

of Annie B’s Kitchen (Sorry but I don’t

think the foot massage can take all the

credit Anne!).

Passionate about food, Annie ran her

own successful corporate hospitality

company in London for 15 years before

her love of Spanish food, wine, music and

culture led her to Andalucia. Casa

Grapes, preferably Moscatel

Begin with washing and cutting in half or

quarter the grapes. Remove seeds and

then freeze in a single layer.

Soak bread for 10 mins and then

squeeze out excess milk/water.

Put almonds, garlic, bread and water in a

blender and whizz until smooth.

With motor running slowly, add OO and

vinegar. Add more water to reach desired

consistency - it should be the consis-

tency of single cream

Season to taste. Put in fridge or freezer

to chill. Serve with frozen grapes, toasted

pine nuts and/or diced apple floating on

top.

Some Facts or Fiction about

the 1500’s...

Most people got married in June because

they took their yearly bath in May, and

they still smelled pretty good by June..

However, since they were starting to

smell . .. . brides carried a bouquet of

flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the

custom today of carrying a bouquet when

getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with

hot water. The man of the house had the

privilege of the nice clean water, then all

the other sons and men, then the women

and finally the children. Last of all the

babies. By then the water was so dirty

you could actually lose someone in it.

Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby

out with the Bath water!"

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-

piled high, with no wood underneath... It

was the only place for animals to get

warm, so all the cats and other small an-

imals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When

it rained it became slippery and some-

times the animals would slip and fall off

the roof. Hence the saying "It's raining

cats and dogs."

There was nothing to stop things from

falling into the house. This posed a real

problem in the bedroom where bugs and

other droppings could mess up your nice

clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts

and a sheet hung over the top afforded

some protection. That's how canopy beds

came into existence.

In those old days, they cooked in the

kitchen with a big kettle that always hung

over the fire.. Every day they lit the fire

and added things to the pot. They ate

mostly vegetables and did not get much

meat. They would eat the stew for dinner,

leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold

overnight and then start over the next

day. Sometimes stew had food in it that

had been there for quite a while. Hence

porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot

nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which

made them feel quite special. When

visitors came over, they would hang up

their bacon to show off. It was a sign of

wealth that a man could, "bring home the

bacon." They would cut off a little to

share with guests and would all sit

around and chew the fat.

Bread was divided according to status.

Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf,

the family got the middle, and guests got

the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or

whisky... The combination would some-

times knock the imbibers out for a couple

of days. Someone walking along the road

would take them for dead and prepare

them for burial. They were laid out on the

kitchen table for a couple of days and the

family would gather around and eat and

drink and wait and see if they would

wake up. Hence the custom of holding a

wake.

protector doesn't work properly, the processor

just burns out, and this is the worst thing that

can happened with your laptop, because to

repair it can cost a lot of money. Even when

your laptop is switched off, heat can cause

damage for the internal components. It's re-

ally difficult to diagnose what exactly and

where exactly the damage has been done, so

it's expensive to repair too.

Here are few tips to avoid this happening:

1. Never leave your laptop where it is exposed

to direct sunlight, whether it is in use or shut

down. Leaving a laptop in direct sunlight can

cause damage not only for the internal

components, but even for a laptop's body.

2. Do not leave your laptop and other mobile

gear in a car. Leaving your laptop closed in a

vehicle in hot temperatures will also cause

damage to your laptop.

3. If you think that your laptop feels really hot,

wait until it cools down to the interior temper-

ature before you use it.

After the goal that never was in the England versus Germany game, a lot has been said of bringing in goal line technology – FIFA have claimed that it is too expensive to implement and would slow the game down.

The 2 major systems that have been considered are Carios and Hawk-Eye.

Cairos is a German based company. Their system works by having sensors in the 1. ball and running thin cables across and behind the penalty area. The electricity

to detect the exact position of the ball and is claimed that it can work in real time.

Hawk-eye is a UK based company – we are all probably more familiar with this 2. company as they run their systems at Wimbledon, as well as cricket and snooker. They use several cameras to triangulate the position of the ball. This system would not run in real time – the game would need to be stopped to analyse the Hawk-eye graphic.

The Cairos system was trialled in the under 17 World Championships in 2005 but was thought that it slowed the game down too much.

It’s yet to be seen if Goal Line Technology will help England play any better!

It claims to be the “Internet´s Biggest Optical Illusion Database”, and new ones are posted on a frequent basis.

of Friends said "I am very proud to be

presenting this cheque on behalf of the

Foundation of Friends to this worthy cause

and would like to take this opportunity to

thank all our supporters."

The Foundation of Friends were

pleased to recently present a cheque

for 2100 euros to AVOI as a result of

recent fund raising activity. AVOI is

the volunteer association that helpschildren with leukemia in the hospital at

Materno de Infantil in Malaga. In oper-

ation since 1993 AVOI´s aim is take

care of the needs of children in hospital

and to help them forget about their

condition. They have been doing this by

creating recreational and cultural

activities including workshops and out-

ings from the hospital. Juan Carmona,

the founder of AVOI, said "the money

raised by The Foundation of Friends helps us

to provide fantastic days out for the children,

such as a recent fiesta at Fuengirola Zoo on

the 4th June - it makes such a difference for

the children."

On Sunday 13th June The Multisports

Club in Aloha Gardens hosted a Sports

and Family Fun Day on behalf of The

Foundation of

Friends.

The event was a

great success

despite the wet

& windy weather,

in excess of

2000 euros was

raised. Children and parents alike took

part in a variety of activities such as

penalty shoot outs, basket shoot outs

and beat the tennis pro.

The Foundation of Friends will donate

this money to CRECE, a small charity in

Marbella for children with Down

Syndrome and other forms of disability.
