his birthday on March 12th. A firm Sentinella

favourite it is difficult to show the sheerscale of his extraordinary work in print,but here goes:

3 months ago Emmanuel Baliyanga,contacted me from Cameroon,asking about the possibility of usingone of my Obama portraits for abook cover. While discussing thedetails, Emmanuel graduallyopened up, telling me that he wasborn in Rwanda and later escapedthe genocide. He also mentionedbeing an artist, having studied artand art history since his childhood.Intrigued, I asked him if he hadsome of his works on the net. Heanswered

“In Africa we haven’t thenecessary tools to exhibit on thenet!”

Well, if there is one thing I knowabout the net it is that it knowsno borders, that something like“Africa” does not really exist, atleast not as a third worldcontinent. In the meanwhile weartists have free access to manyonline galleries allowing us toexhibit and sell our work, nomatter where we reside. The onlything needed being an internetconnection and digital photos ofour paintings. I was amazed to seehow fast Emmanuel understoodwhat I meant. I offered to guidehim through the net, helping himto set up his galleries, and even ablog. The only remaining problemleft was the paintings themselves:after personal tragedy and thegeneral impossibility to sell art inAfrica, he had stopped painting 6years ago. All artworks frombefore were lost, of course.

Well, he didn’t lose much time.Soon I received via email some newpaintings and I opened his online

galleries. Two weeks later we created a blog forhim, “Painting Africa”.

To understand his courage and strength of character,here is his story in short – a story which would beworth an entire book… later perhaps if I can persuadehim!

Emmanuel was born in 1973 in the north of Rwanda.He was admitted to an elite art school run by Belgianmonks at a very young age. There he learnteverything about drawing, painting and sculpture.He obtained his diploma of arts 6 years later withhonours.

In 1994, as the Genocide began, he was one of afamily of 9 children. Unlike all the other membersof his family who perished, he escaped and fled toZaire. In 1995, to escape the tough life and epidemicsof the refugee camps, he and other refugees tried

exhibit in his online galleries, complemented by blogentries.

Although the story itself is so interesting, the main aimof this article is to present the world with an alternativeform of humanitarian help: guiding artists from thirdworld countries through the net and helping them toshowcase their art. This method has the huge advantageof giving these people a new self-image and making themthe tool of their own future. And last but not least, thisis a wonderful way to work towards cultural worldenrichment, making visible art works from artisticallyunknown countries.

What most amazes Emmanuel is to see people from allaround the world looking at his work everyday andcontacting him. Besides, 2 months after the opening ofhis galleries, a miracle occurred: he sold his first 2 printsonline, one to somebody from Tobago, Trinidad and theother one to Connecticut /USA. Perhaps you can imaginehow he feels!

Newly arrived in Cameroon,he entered a drawingcompetition for AIDSawareness. He won first prize,and used the prize money toput himself through the ArtUniversity in Yaoundé, for 3years, until he had no moneyleft. He then started to paintpostcards, but was soon notable to sell enough of themto survive. Totallydiscouraged, he decided toabandon art and work in bookdesign, occasional work whichbarely enables him to survive.

Today he says:

“Thanks to the encounterwith Miki, I rediscovered myjoy of painting”.

I am immensely glad to havemet Emmanuel. It is one ofthe most enriching andhumbling experiences of mylife. He is gradually rebuildinga body of work, which we

Greetings shipmates!

Inundated is my postbagwith requests todiscuss certain artists,particularly one JoanMiró. Well, well! So thismonth it’s the turn ofMiguel Barceló (b.1957).

Fellow art aficionados!Are we all paid-upmembers of the DeadPainters Society? Nar‘course not! At 54, Barceló’s not a ripeol’ fart, he’s a gifted leading Spanishcontemporary; versatile, skilled inpainting, drawing, sculpture andceramics. In 2004 an exhibition of hiswatercolours at the Louvre made him the youngest artist ever to featurethere. However, his forte is the site-specific extravaganza installation.

In 2007 he completed a vast ceramic tableau of cracked mud, dead fish andhuman crania (luvly!) the subject being the miracle of the loaves and fishesby which Christ fed the multitude. This 300 sq. metre mural entirely coversthe walls of one of the chapels at the Seu, Palma, Majorca. The Cathedralnow has a mysterious cave crammed with skulls and monsters. Pop over toPalma with the yacht for a dekko.

Even more spectacular, costing the Spanish government 15m€ plus, is anenormous ceiling in Chamber XX of the UN’s Palace of Nations in Geneva.The work, in a domed area covering 1500 sq metres, is a massive sculpturalinstallation of multi-coloured stalactites fabricated with 100 tons ofaluminium and paint. It purports to simulate the sensation of the earthmelting into the sky.

I’m tempted to imagine a selection of our current duplicitous politiciansassembled in Chamber XX. The whole damned lot comes crashing downthus creating the most amazing piece of performance art ever. Long mayyou prosper Barceló!

Boston, Massachusetts.In the early hours of18th March 1990, the

most lucrative art heistin history took place.Lucrative because the haul,worth well over $500million, has never beenrecovered and the thievesnever caught. To this daythe picture frames hangempty in the gallery anddespite hundreds ofinterviews, thousands ofleads and a $5 millionreward put up by thegallery, the case remainsunsolved.

Amongst the stolentreasures were fivepaintings by Degar and ‘TheConcert’, one of only 34known paintings by theDutch master Vermeer. Eventhe former district

Attorney of Boston, DonaldStern, is prepared to puthis hand up and say thatthe investigation has, sofar proved to be a failure.

At 1:24am two men dressedas Police Officer’s walkedup to the side entrance ofthe Isabella StewartGardner Museum in downtownBoston. They simply knockedon the door, over-poweredthe guards and spent thenext 80 minutes casuallyremoving the paintings. Noshot was fired, and nothingmore than a half-nelson anda pair of hand-cuffs wereused. That is, accordingto William P. Youngworth,a shady antiques dealer,who says he knows who stolethe paintings and wherethey were being stashed.

Youngworth had made contactwith a journalist from theBoston Globe, Tom Mashberg,and after a late night driveto a warehouse, reputedlyshowed him Rembrandt’s“Storm on the Sea ofGalilee” another snatchedin the robbery. Youngworthalso gave him some flakesof paint from the paintingwhich later turned out notto be from Remrandt. Whenthe District Attorneydemanded a return of oneof the paintings asevidence a battle of willsbegan between the FBI andYoungworth.

Youngworth maintains thathe could have secured therecovery of the paintingsbut that now this willprobably need a passportand a phrasebook.

Well as we go to press, over the pond at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood they are

hoovering the red carpet, Anne Hathaway plucks her eyebrows and James Francochecks his right arm is secure. Here in Almeria “She Who Must Be Obeyed” readies

herself and sews on another sequin.

So with the tension mounting Square Eyes rummaged through stacks of movies to

pluck out some classics from days gone by. The first box that Square Eyes happenedacross was one marked the 1970s. Not a bad place to start and so here are three

movies to win the Best Picture Award from that decade.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’sNest (1975)

subdue him for ever. Kesey himself wanted GeneHackman to play the lead and left the productionafter only two weeks, unhappy that the narration inthe film was not by the Chief Bromden character asit was in the book. Annie Hall 1977 - For Square Eyes, the archetypicalWoody Allen movie and a turning point in his career.Allen plays neurotic New York comedian Alvy Singerwho falls in love with Annie Hall, a singer andphotographer played by Diane Keaton – as in life, asin film. There are some wonderful pieces of filmmaking in this movie and Allen’s character regularlybreaks the fourth wall, talking directly to the camera.The film won a total of four Oscars.

The French Connection 1971 - Based on a true storyof drug smuggling, this is as gritty as it gets. GeneHackman, tough, brutish NY Cop “Popeye” Doylecontrasted with Fenando Rey’s suave, debonairkingpin Alain Charnier. One from the tough streets ofBrooklyn where the real cost of drugs is counted, theother counting thecash. If nothing elsethis film has the bestcelluloid car chasesever and one that hasbeen often imitated.The dialogue isexcellent, and eventhough the actorsadmit to picking upthe street talk thepolice advisors gavethem – this didn’t stop

Spain, and Estapona in particular, played

reluctant host to one of Rock music's great

tragedies in February. In the early hours of

Sunday 6th, Gary Moore left us, found dead

of an apparent heart attack by his girlfriend

at the beginning of a short holiday. At 58, he

was far too young, particularly as he had

never fallen into the trap that his great friend

and compatriot Phil Lynott did. Moore was a

huge guitarist, one of the Top Ten in the world

in my opinion, and I don't say that lightly. A

top ten that would include Paul Kossoff, Brian

May, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.

genres makes him almost impossible to

define, whether it be as a 16 year-old prodigy

with Skid Row, his massively important

contributions in three separate stints with

Thin Lizzy, his jazz-rock wizardry with

Colosseum II, or his beautifully crafted

solo work.

He was one of the few rock guitarists to

successfully combine speed, skill and raw

power. His use of unusually thick gauge

strings, which he proceeded to bend like any

other with his muscular fingers added

previously unheard tone to his emotive

playing.

He loved Spain, and appeared at the Guitar

Expo in Barcelona. Way back in his solo

career, he recorded a "Parisienne Walkways"-

style song called "Spanish Guitar". How could

he have known how poignant the final line

would prove to be:

"As I sit here and play, underneath the Stars

It passes the time away

And brings me closer to my Spanish Holiday"

R.I.P. Gary, we'll never see your like again.

When I was a young lad Sunday afternoons were oft spent supping

ale at the pub listening to the local bluesmen doing their thing. So

it took me right back going to see Los Gringos at the Roadhouse

one Sunday in January who got the whole place rockin’. As well as

all of the old blues and rock classics, Muddy, Floyd, Queen, Quo,

y’know, they mix it up with some great Spanish rock. Los Gringos

are Danny, guitar and vocals (English), Deni bass and vocals

TRAVELLING ACOUSTIC has developedconsiderably since it first met last Summer,meeting every fortnight at various venues fromSorbas, Lubrin and Arboleas to the Playas ofMojacar and Vera.

We are not a club as there is no membership,committee or fee but we do meet in themanner of Folk and Jazz Clubs in that whilethere is a core of musicians who come along

Folk musicwhen able, other musicians are alwayswelcome to come along and play.

The music is always acoustic, enabling us toenjoy the natural harmonies of instrumentsand voices. On a typical evening the musicwill be largely traditional and modern folk bothBritish and American. Occasionally we havejazz, blues and music from other lands.

positive message of redemption comes throughdespite the repetitive and often bleak proseas he describes the inner tribulations of an

addict. At the end we are all the same, we all

have vices and we all need each other.

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey

“This book is not for the faint hearted” – The Sentinella.

The book catapulted Frey into national andinternational fame and garnered manychampions along the way, not least OprahWinfrey who included it in her “Book Club”and celebrity abusers such as Lyndsey Lohan.Equally the book has caused a lot controversyin the publishing world. Not because of it’sgraphic and often coarse language, a stock toolof the American literary scene these days, butbecause of allegation that that the story is justnot true. So much so that it has led thepublishers to issue a disclaimer against it’sclassification of the book as non-fiction. Whilst the book is worth reading as a tale ofmodern-day redemption, it is also worthinvestigation as an insight into the minds ofpublishers, for as The Smoking Gun puts it “if"A Million Little Pieces" was fictional, just someoverheated stories of woe, heartache, anddebauchery cooked up by a wannabe author,it probably would not get published.”

A quarter of million people, give or take a

few thousand, gather on the banks of the

Thames every year to watch this gruelling

race between the eights from Oxford and

Cambridge. It is 4 miles 347 yds in 17

minutes or so of lung-bursting, muscle-

burning effort after months of training.

The event has always been part of the

sporting calendar but over the last fifteen

years has grown in popularity along with the

rest of the sport. This is no small part due

to the success of the UK Olympic rowing

team and these days the crews from both

universities are packed with Olympic stars

from around the world. There is no weight

restriction in this race. The heavier the

crew, the heavier the boat by also the more

punch it packs.

The current tally stands at: Cambridge 80

wins to Oxford’s 75.

Winning the toss is important (an 1829 gold

sovereign) as the winning president chooses

The Boat Race - 26th March 2011, 17:00 GMT

which side of the river to start. From the

Middlesex station you have the advantage

of the first half bend and the last half bend,

whilst from the Surrey Station there is an

advantage of the full bend in the middle.

The race has also provided radio listeners

with one of the most famous sports

commentaries when in 1949 John Snagge of

the BBC exclaimed "I can't see who's in the

lead but it's either Oxford or Cambridge”

Well as we go to print at the midway stage

of the competition, we have a timely breakso that we can all draw a breath and review

the good, the bad and the ugly from what

we’ve seen over the last few weeks.Everyone seems to be talking of a Gland

Slam decider between England and France

at Twickenham, but whatever the outcomeof that match, things are never so straight

forward in this competition so we take a

look on how all competitors fair.

The French were brilliant against the Scots but Ireland could have so easilyupset “le panier de pommes”. France have missed the most tackles intournament so far (28) and conceded lax penalties so will bad discipline provethe down fall of the French?

The mercurial winger, and RBS 6 Nations player of the year in 2010, TommyBowe is back which can only be good news for the Irish. They gave away too

much of the game against the French giving away too many penalties and were

run close by Italy. There’s still belief in the squad that the Triple Crown is therefor the taking.

The English back-line have been impressive with the continued upward curve ofToby Flood and close support play being key to the winger Chris Ashton success.The number of penalties conceded will have to be kept in check but afterthumping Italy at home and winning in Cardiff, England’s are looking good.

Breaking a winless 8 test match run against the Scots was just the tonic that theWelsh needed. The Welsh certainly took the chances handed to them at Murrayfield

and will have to continue to do so if they are to succeed against the French. In

between that there is the little matter of Italy in Rome and Ireland in Cardiff.

The Scots so resilient against the French, may have failed to deceive yet again.Unable to capitalise on a two man advantage at home to Wales they were

disappointing. Andy Robinson’s tenure may be close to the end if the Scots

don’t perform in their remaining games.

So unlucky against the Irish, Italy will want to bounce back from the trouncingby England. They host France for the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy which theyhave yet to win and only an optimist would see success this year. But beforethat they face Wales and always seem to reserve their best performances for

the Welsh. The back-line will have to become more decisive when in possession.


The first Cheltenham Festival took place

in 1902 and since then has grown in

stature and importance. There are 27 highquality races run over the 4 days with the

highlights being the Gold Cup, with Kuato

Star trying to be champion again.However, his chances took an unexpected

nose-dive last month when he fell in the

King George steeplechase as an odds onfavourite to win. Will he bounce back or

will he be beaten by a younger horse? Only

time will tell. Also the Champion Hurdlewith the Irish trying hard to beat their

old enemy the English trained horses.

Millions of pounds will be wagered overthe 4 days and with the Irish arriving in

force this will be one meeting that any

Well things are heating up for the festival

as the declaration has been made for the

feature races. Over the last couple of

months we have previewed the feature

races on Day One, The Champion Hurdle and

Day Two, The Queen Mother’s Chase. Here

we take a quick look at World Hurdle on

Day Three and of course one of the highlights

of the NH calendar; The Gold Cup.

The World Hurdle brings together the very

best staying hurdlers from around the world.

The race used to be a favourite of the Irish

but there has been no winner from the

Emerald Isle for 15 years and in recent years

there has been a strong challenge from

across the channel. Five out of the last nine

horses to win were bred in France and the

class act Baracouda won twice here in 2002

and 2003. This year the French look to Grand

Crus to provide a strong challenge and on

paper this year’s contest would seem to be

between him and the Nicholls trained, Big

Bucks. The latter is bidding to become only

the second horse to win the contest three

times (Inglis Drever being the only other)

and the first to win it in consecutive years.

So to the Gold Cup which, as ever, sees the

cream of NH chasers coming together. The

roll-call of yesteryear’s winners is a roll-

call of some of the greatest chasers of all

time; Golden Miller, Arkle, Dersert Orchid

and Best Mate to name a few. Three former

winners go to the post this year; Imperial

Commander, Denman and of course Kauto,

whose star is perhaps waning as age catches

up with him. There have been no winners

over the age of 10 since 1969. Experience

of the track is always a plus in this race as

11 of the last 13 winners had been previously

placed at the Festival.

First Driving Impressions – Porsche 911Carrera GTS, Coupe and Cabriolet, UK Presslaunch, Bournemouth.

I never thought I would say these words, butI have driven a Porsche that actually looksgood value. There I’ve said it.

I have never really understood the Porscherange, all the different models, all a bitconfusing, the vast range of options that canadd an average of £8,000 to the car. In thepast, Porsche drivers have developed areputation for more money than sense, andyou either look at a Porsche driver with envyor loathing, but you would never let one outat a road junction or in a car park.

The new 911 Carrera GTS is a combination ofthe rest of the 911 range, but takes all thebest bits, and offers them at a very reasonableprice. The GTS is not much more than theCarrera S, but has a load more standardspecification and has 23hp more taking it to408hp. The 3.8-litre 6-cylinder engine in theGTS has a top speed of 190mph, wherepermitted, and even in Germany, on theAutobahns, this must be quite a terrifyingspeed. The 0-62mph is a staggering 4.4seconds and the C02 emission figures are, asexpected a very high 240g/km, and has acombined fuel consumption figure of27.4mpg.

Also standard is Porsche Active SuspensionManagement which is an electronic activedamping system which really does iron outthe bumps and makes the car feel so safe andsolid. The brakes have four-pistons, so evenfrom some of the very high speeds it iscapable of, it will stop in the shortest ofdistance.

We drove both the Coupe and Cabrioletaround Bournemouth and Poole. The roadsaround Bournemouth are not the best to testthis sort of car, as most of the dual-carriageways are restricted to 50mph, but Idid find just how docile it is in town centresand at low speeds, and how easy it is to drive,a true everyday car.

The interior of the 911 is best described asfunctional, there are no clever gadgets, justa simple dash, where everything is in the right

place, and everything works perfectly. Thetouch and feel of all the knobs, dials andswitches are typically German premiumquality, but without any fuss, the wholeinterior is beautifully finished, yet basic, veryclever and very apt for a high-poweredperformance sports car.

The exterior is just typical 911, and since thelaunch of the ‘New Generation 911’ in 1988,nothing much has changed to the design. TheGTS gets Black High Gloss 19-inch wheels asstandard, and these coupled to the wide bodymake it look a million dollars, but at a cost ofonly £78,370 for the Coupe and £85,300 forthe fantastic Cabriolet. I will say it again; theGTS does look good value for money.

I did not drive the 911 Carrera GTS as it wasdesigned to be driven, don’t think I got it upto 70mph, but did find that driving it slowlyaround the beautiful South Coast of Englandwas probably a more pleasant experiencethan tearing round a test track at 100mph.

There is aunique advanced mood lighting system witha light on the dressing table, if there is anenjoyable way of flying long-haul, then thisis the way to do it.

First impressions - Emirates A380

I went last week to Seoul via Dubai on anEmirates A380, Business Class there, andupgraded First Class for the return journey.The time from Manchester to Dubai is aroundsix-and-a-half-hours and Dubai to Seoularound ten-hours. The distance is about 8,000miles each way, but on the upper deck of theA380 time really does fly.

I ventured downstairs to Economy wherethere are 427 seats with a configuration of 3-4-3 and nine toilets. The space didn’t looktoo bad, and much more space than mostairlines Economy Class. There are stairs atthe front and rear of the aircraft, but thefront ones are the most impressive with woodpanelling, chrome strips on the stairs andambient lighting, they were more akin to aCruise ship than an aeroplane.

At the rear of the A380 upstairs is a HorseshoeShaped Bar, with two setters each side of it.The bar is fully stocked with a wide varietyof drinks, and tea and coffee can be ordered.There are snacks and freshly madesandwiches arrive on the bar frequently. Thisis a really nice place to socialise and meetfellow passengers and does make the hourspass by very quickly.

But by far the best thing about the A380 arethe two Spa’s at the front of First Class, rightnext to the stairs. These Spa’s areimmaculately decorated, with woodpanelling, under floor heating and a shower,yes a shower. I had one and it was sorefreshing and a wonderful experience, ashower at 39,000 feet, simply brilliant.

Emirates currently have a fleet of 15 A380with another 90 on order. The average priceof one of these 517 seaters is US$400million,which does seem a bit of a bargain. You couldbuy around 18,000 Ford Focus’s for the samemoney. If you put all these Focus’s end to endthey would stretch nearly 45miles.

Back upstairs thereare 76 Business Classseats at the rear ofthe plane with a 1-2-1 configuration witheach seat having aisleaccess. They are allindividual areas andno two seats arejoined together. The‘Pods’ are all self-contained with a

mini-bar, touch-screen 17-inch widescreen TVwith over 1,200 channels of On-Demandentertainment with over 200 movies, 100 TVchannels and 100 Video Games. The TV alsodisplays up-to-the-minute information aboutthe progress of the flight and you can seeviews from cameras on the front, tail andunderside of the aircraft. There is also a plugto charge laptops or phones. The seat foldsflat electrically to create a full size bed, withpillows and blankets readily available, andvery comfortable they are too.

Up front in First Class the area for eachpassenger is larger and each ‘Suite’ haselectrically operated doors, if you want peace

Some people are more susceptible to being

bitten than others and I’m sure you’ve been

told that you must have “sweet blood”. Well

there are ways that you can help yourself.

By now you should be taking Vitamin B1 which

is believed to make you smell yeasty to the

mozzies (not to your family and friends

though) You could also try brewer’s yeast or

a vitamin B complex to cover any other

eventualities. All of these have other benefits

so it’s worth giving them a go. If you do have

a lot of bites take Vitamin C with

bioflavonoids (Quercetin) This acts as an

antihistamine which should at least reduce

the inflammation caused by a bite or sting.

If you have a lot of inflammation you can take

1,000mg every hour but be careful as you

could end up with diarrhea. This helps with

the detoxification process, expelling the

venom from the blood. Drink plenty of water

as well to keep the toxins diluted. Nettle

tea is also a natural anti histamine so always

have this in the cupboard, especially if you

are a hay fever sufferer as well. It will help

relieve some of the itching.

Don’t wear bright colours, this attracts the

insects. You may be “sweet” to the insects

if you wear perfume, body moisturizers,

scents, hair products. So to counteract this

try mixing a small amount of citronella oil or

tea tree oil into an unfragranced lotion or

carrier oil. They are both natural repellants.

If you do get bitten, dap on some tea tree oil

or lavender oil. This will reduce the itching

and swelling.

The year - 1986. Maggie and George havebought a new build on a plot of land nearCompeta and met their Spanishneighbours.

Easter holidays again, and our land showed

an exciting display of wild orchids and 30

different species of wild flowers, in great

drifts of colour on every tidied bank. (I

counted and identified every one.) By the

house were scarlet geraniums and huge

bushes of marguerites.

The almonds had not been grafted and Pepe

was not impressed by our glowing terraces.

“Water is coming to this valley, and you

could grow 40, 50 or 60 avocado trees

here.” he announced, and proceeded to

pace every terrace: a small figure,

shoulders bent permanently from carrying

boxes of grapes, almonds or olives, his straw

hat pulled well down and rope sandals on

his feet. “ Yes, at least 60 trees here” he

pronounced.

Pepe’s wife Dolores climbed up the hill to

introduce herself and bring a plateful of

freshly cooked doughnuts. She kissed me

on both cheeks, her fresh face smelling of

perfume, her jet-black hair beautifully

groomed, and spoke so fast that we

couldn’t understand a word. Requests to

speak more slowly only induced smiles and

laughter, and indeed over the years that

we were to be friends she never once

managed to slow down her rapid Spanish.

We were invited back to their finca for a

glass of Pepe’s wine. Two lads of eight and

ten came to shake hands with us and

Dolores and the boys drank hot goats milk

while Pepe supplied us with glasses of his

sweet dark wine. We learned that at this

time of the year the family only slept here

at weekends and holidays, but from July

when the finca had to be whitewashed, the

almonds collected and husked, the grapes

harvested and dried, and their olives

picked, they remained in the campo

sometimes until after Christmas.

We returned to England for a couple of

months, and when we returned in August

Pepe had accidentally managed to set fire

to the whole of our land - all was a

blackened ruin! Fortunately friends had

been staying earlier and had weeded the

terrace in front of the house, which had

undoubtedly saved it.

“ I managed to save

this pine tree, I put

the flames out with

my bare hands,”

Pepe said, as if

he’d done us a

great favour, then

produced a box full

of his raisins as

compensation.

living in Spain32A new Indalo for Mojácar

The Indalo is a straight-backed figure withopen legs and extended arms holding a half-circle over his head. A totem that started outas a protective agent to keep any bad luckaway. Perhaps the half-circle is a rainbow orsome kind of umbrella that keeps off thetempest, the thunder and the odd lightning-bolt.

The Indalo has been connected with Mojácarsince the dawn of time and is more properlycalled ‘el pequeño hombrecillo mojaquero’ or‘the little Mojácar man’. A crude painting overa door or perhaps some stones artfully laid inthe ground to create the figure, people usedit as decoration and for good luck. It is truethat there is a poor copy of the figurinescorched on the wall in an underground grottotogether with other cave-man daubs in themountain village of Vélez Blanco, but ournoble totem is clearly older – perhaps arendition of a visitor – an early tourist perhaps– from another land.

By the 1960’s, re-christened as ‘Indalo’ by agroup of Almerian artists based in and inspiredby the singular beauty of our pueblo, the figurewas easily recognisable across Europe, both

as light gold jewellery and as a heavier castiron decoration, as the Mojácar Man. We hadone of the latter type bolted to the grill onour car and another one stood on the chimneyof the house – sorting out any bad-tempereddemon that dared to come close.

In around 1988, the mayor of Mojácar allowedan advertising agency in Almería to exploit theIndalo for various ends, and a new andsomehow more modern version, by now ahump-backed totem twisted by a withered leg– the sort of thing that the Spanish artist Mirówould no doubt approve of – soon appeared asthe image for the entire province. Mojácar wasrewarded with a brand new logo by the agency,a sort of mountain squiggle with a sun aboveit. Most original in a country like Spain. It didn'tlast any longer than the next 'moción decensura' when the mayor and his pals wereousted in a 'palace revolution'.

So we returned to the Indalo, unwillinglysharing it with the other 102 municipalities inthe province, together with the region's touristboard.

But now, a new version has arrived tocomplement our medieval town with itsnarrow streets and stark white housesclustered on a steep Moorish hill under theclean blue sky. The entrance to our town hasbeen dignified with a new roundabout crownedwith a fresh interpretation of our good-lucktotem. A one-legged figure in a permanentstate of semi-tumescence.

living in Spain

Renting out your property in Spain can beattractive from a financial point of view, orif you don’t want to leave the houseunattended. Here are a few issues for you toconsider very carefully before offering yourhouse on the rental market.

Consult a lawyer to draft a contract. With aSpanish property the Spanish law is applicableand therefore the contract should be draftedin Spanish.

You can make a contract for any period youwant, but remember that when the contractis due for renewal, you must still give noticeto your tenant at least 15 days before, or itwill automatically be prolonged.

Screen your tenants-to-be, by asking them fortheir income and/or salary slips. Throwing outyour insolvent tenant is easier said then done.

Also a check on their behaviour isn’t a badidea. When somebody starts illegal activitiesfrom your house, you can be in big trouble.

Make an inventory of all items in the house,and/or take photos of every room and everycorner. Add this inventory to the contract.

If you rent the property out for a longerperiod, let your tenant pay the water andelectricity bills by direct debit straight outof their own bank account.

If you rent through an estate agency, makesure you have a written agreement abouttheir responsibilties. It is a good idea to havea contact person local to your property whocan keep an eye on the situation. Anotheroption is to employ somebody you trust as ahandyman or gardener, who can maintain theproperty and at the same time have a lookaround.

Listed under Palomares on a recentlybrowsed web site of our region, there wasa note stating that there was no historyof news for the town. If only that werethe case many may think!! With talk ofthe atomic bomb incident back in ourheadlines yet again, the continued storywould cast a shadow over many aneighbourhood, but not so Palomares.This is a lovely peaceful town full ofengaging and cheerful people and

certainly a thriving community. In fact theperfect place to visit if you just want toget away from the hustle and bustle ofthe coast, sit back and relax. Eleven years ago Steve came to Spain and fell in love with

the place. Despite running his own haulage company, Stevesold up and moved to Turre. The Sentinella caught up with

Steve one Friday evening after another busy week at Bay

Radio.

Born and bred in Bath, when his father got a job as a Prison

Officer at HMP Cornhill, Steve and his family moved to Shepton

Mallet in the Mendips. Amongst other things, the town is famous

for the Glastonbury festival and it wasn’t long before Steve was helping out at the

Evis farm during the event.

In Spain, Steve moved to Urcal and initially worked in Real Estate, but when the

market collapsed, he was looking for a new direction. Hearing an advert on the

radio he joined the team at Choice FM. It was there that 6 six years ago Steve fell in

love again, this time with his partner, Kathryn. Steve Fear may have been better

known in the area for his Friday night Rock Show but he also took care of the

production side of the things, teaching himself all of the technical aspect of running

a radio station. Now, with the recent changes, Steve is the Area Sales Manager for

Bay Radio and in charge of local erections he tells us!!

smile) Me - seriously, if i can’t do it I’ll

learn about it and do it.

All night she sank pints, keeping up with

best of them. Impressive. In fine voice

too until last orders were called. “Well

Now that you all know where to get tinned salmon, here is a meal using it. Salmon Fishcakesare truly the best! They are very easy to make and very quick to prepare.

As part of the meal I have included Spinach Soup. This, too, is very easy to make and usesfrozen leaf spinach (something I always keep in the freezer along with peas and ice cream).

Shrove Tuesday is 8th March this year and the day when, traditionally,we all eat pancakes. I have included them in, what I call, a store cupboard meal.

Menu for March – serves 4:Cream of Spinach Soup ~ Salmon Fishcakes ~ Medley of red pepper,

red onions and tomatoes ~ Pancakes

METHOD

1.Put onions, spinach, stock cubes into pan with the water and bringto the boil

2.Turn down and simmer for 10 minutes.

3.Liquidise and add crème fraiche, if using, and add sufficient milk tothin soup down to the consistency required.

4.Taste and add salt and pepper to your liking. Re-heat and servewith a swirl of cream (Optional)

METHOD

1.Cook potatoes (do not add salt) until soft. Drain and shake them dry over a low heat. Mash them well.

2.Break up salmon – discarding any bones but reserving the liquid

3.Add fish to the potatoes plus as much of the reserved liquid as necessary to make a dryish mix.

4.Mix in the parsley. Taste and add salt and pepper to your liking.

5.Using your hands, make the mixture into 8 fishcakes – leave for about ½ hour in the fridge.

6.Carefully, coat the fishcakes first in flour, then dip them in the beaten egg and finally in the breadcrumbs.

7.Heat oil in a pan and fry the fishcakes until they are golden brown on both sides and heated through.

Serve with a medley of red peppers, red onions and tomatoes (see web page) and a mix of frozenpeas and tinned sweetcorn heated together – this can be done in the microwave.

INGREDIENTS� 350g of peeled sliced potatoes � 1 x 200g tin of salmon � handful of fresh parsley (washed and finely

chopped) or 2 teasp dried � breadcrumbs (made by liquidising some stale bread (useful to keep some

in the freezer)� a little flour � 1 egg beaten � little oil for frying

METHOD

1.Mix flour and salt in a bowl – make a well in the middle and add the beaten egg

2.Beat well with a wooden spoon

3.Add the milk and water mix a little at a time, beating well between each addition.

4.Add the oil and whisk to make sure that there are no lumps

5.Heat a medium non-stick pan and add a very small amount of oil

6.When the pan is hot, turn heat down to medium and add 2 tablespoons of the batter.

7.Immediately swirl pan around so that the base is coated with the batter

8.The pancake should only take about ½ a minute to cook on each side

9.Turn onto a warm plate and cover with a clean cloth while you cook the remainder –makes about 12

After a few weeks in the UK over Christmasand January, I arrived back in Spain at thebeginning of February after a particularlyhard winter, to a sight of death anddestruction in my garden (it’s quite high andexposed to the icy winds and frosts). I’d beenforewarned by a neighbour so I was prepareda bit, but oh boy! did it look shocking. All thesucculents were dead. The Siempre Verde(which was green and glossy when I left inDecember) was brown and shrivelled,Geraniums non existent. Even the HottentotFig* which is such a hardy brute, was greyand crispy.

Out came the trusty secateurs and loppersand as I write I’m steadily working my wayround my garden. As I cut away at the brownbits I was already beginning to see signs ofhope. Underneath the crispy layer of deadvegetation green shoots were already startingto push up.

It’s a fine line to walk knowing when to cutback and how much. Some plants willregenerate on the woody stems with the newbuds pushing through as the dead leaves fall

so it would be a mistake to cut back too hard,whereas others such as the succulents willnever come back on dead stems. I can’tadvise you to go chopping down everythingthat appears to be dead. Talk to friends andneighbours who may have similar plants andmore experience. Observe what your Spanishneighbours do too. It’s probably best to delaypruning until all danger of frost has passed ifyou are unsure how hard to cut. Of courseyou may be lucky and live nearer the coastwhere I see that plants haven’t sufferednearly as much as those further inland.

But enough of all that depressing talk. If youhaven’t already done so, I hope that like me,you’ll be busy planting up cuttings and sewingseeds ready for the late spring and summer.I’ve just finished sewing Cape Daisy* seedsand hopefully I’ll be rewarded with lots ofcolour in the spring, which is just around thecorner!

Last month we covered four defined

styles. This month we take a closer look

at how Contemporary Design influencesinteriors. The dictionary defines

contemporary as being "of the same time"

but there is a wider definition in designterms, we can pick up many threads for

instance "Minimalism" in reality de-

cluttered interiors pared down and whereevery element is scrutinized aesthetically,

a kind of "new age shaker".

What is style?

One of my favourites is the electric eel,

and despite their eel-like appearance,

they are actually classified as fish! Theyare more like the carp and the cat fish.

Let me give you some amazing facts about

these fish:

The size of an electric eel is 6 ft! That'sabout as tall as a full grown man! They

can also weigh up to 20 kilos, thats 20

Where do they get their name from? Well,
