•  ThetankershuQledrillwasheldonFebruary19thatalocalparkalongMobileBay.

•  ThedrillaQemptedtoreplicatethe2-hourWaterSupplyDeliveryTestusedbyISOintheirevalua6onoffiredepartmentwatersupplycapabili6es.

•  WhileISOnolongerusesthephysicaldemonstra6onofwatersupplydelivery*,the2-hourtestiss6llareasonablestandardbywhichfiredepartmentscancomparetheirwatersupplyopera6ons.(ISOnowusescomputermodelingtopredicttankershuFleflowcapabiliHes.)

BarnwellEngine3874wasthefirstenginetoarriveatthedumpsitefollowedbyBarnwellEngine3875.Thetwocrewsworkedtogethertoini6atefireaQackopera6onsusingaportablemonitorwhilehavingthesecondengineset-upasa“nursetanker”un6ltankersarrivedonloca6on.

Withnurseopera6onsunderway,crewsworkedtogetsetupfordumpsiteopera6ons.Knowingthattheywereplanningonmoving“bigwater,”thecrewsworkedtobuildouttwosuc6onlines.The1,750gpmpumperhadMIVsoneachsuc6oninletwhichallowedthisprocesstobesuccessful.

•  Forthisdrill–twofillsiteswereused.BothsitesusedwaterfromMobileBayandbothsiteswereincloseproximitytoeachother.

•  Apublicboatlaunchwasusedtoprovideaccessfortwopumpers,eachwhichthensupportedatankerloadingsite.

•  Theboatlaunchareaprovidedamplewatervolumetosupportthedrillandaccesswasnotaproblem.

•  A1,500gpmanda1,750gpmpumperwereusedtosupportthetankerfillsta6ons.

•  Thetwovacuumtankersself-loadedandthusdidnotneedthesupportofapumper.

•  Thefillsiteswerewithinafewhundredfeetofthedumpsite,soa7-minute6medelaywasusedtosimulatetravelbetweenthefillsiteandthedumpsite.

Whennotloadingatanker,waterwasdivertedbackintheBaywhichmadeopera6onseasierforthepumpoperator.Thissetupalsoallowedforquickdiversionofpressurefromthefilllineswhichallowedcrewstodisconnectfaster.

TheResults

•  Thedrillwasstoppedatthe110-minutemarkdueto6meconstraints.

•  Waterflowwasinterruptedonlyonceduringtheen6redrill–atthe14-minutemarkfor90seconds…duetoabrokensuc6onhosecoupling.

•  Anes6mated102,000gallonsofwaterwereflowedthroughtheaQackengineduringthedrillproducinganaverageflowrateof999gpm.


TheLessonsLearned

•  Atthisdrill,thedumpsitepumperhadelectronicallycontrolledsuc6oninletvalvesonallthree,6-inchsuc6oninlets.Thisfeatureallowedfortheaddi6onofsuc6onlineswithouthavingtoshutdownflowopera6ons.

•  Thedumpsitepumperwasa1,750gpmpumperwhichprovedquitecapableofsuppor6ngthe1,450gpmflowplusrunningthreejetsiphons.


TheLessonsLearned

•  Dumptankarrangementiscri6caltosuccessfuldumpsiteops.Atthisdrill,the2ndand3rddumptanksdeployedwerearrangedtoallowthreetankerstosidedumpatthesame6meifneeded.

•  Jetsiphonsconsumepumpcapacity.Usingalargecapacitypumperasthedumpsitepumpermadeabigcontribu6ontothesuccessofthisdrill.


TheLessonsLearned

•  Atankerfill-siteneedstorunlikeaNASCARpitstop.AnythingthatslowsdowntheloadingoftankersisgoingtoreducetheefficiencyofthetankershuQle.

•  Atthisdrill,thereweredifferenttankerfillconnec6onswhichrequiredadaptorsandthussloweddownsomeofthefillopera6ons.


TheLessonsLearned

•  Havingastandardizedfillconnec6onforalltankersincreasesfillefficiencyanddecreasesfill6me.

•  Thetwovacuumtankerstrulydemonstratedtheirabilitytohaulwater.Asthedrillprogressed,thevacuumtankersbeganpassingthegravitytankers…allbecauseofthereducedloading6meofthevacuums.


TheLessonsLearned

•  Jetsiphons,suc6onhose,anddumptanksareneededatmosteverydumptankopera6on–therefore,itiswisetocarrythoseitemsoneverytanker–aswellasadaptors.

•  The“bundling”ofwaterhaulingmutualaidresourceshasprovensuccessfulinmanydrills.Thetankertaskforceconceptagainprovedtobeaneffec6veprocessforreques6ngandusingaddi6onalruralwatersupplyresources.
