    Om Swastiastu...

There is no secret to why Bali is a paradise island from secluded white sand beaches

to breath-taking mountains, from traditional dance performances to hip night clubs, the

island has them all. Not to mention the friendly people that easily make you feel a part

of the community, and make you long to come back.

But even if you have been to Bali for many times, the island still manages to surprise

you. Just when you thought you have discovered the islands most secret white sand

beach, there is a new hidden destination waiting to be revealed. And thats why our

March 2015 issue is here to help you discover some of Balis hidden gems.

Embark on an adventure to chase fi ve stunning waterfalls in North Bali with our

contributor Phil Green in ACTION & ATTRACTION some of the paths may be

challenging but they are all worth it once you set your eyes on the falls proper. But if

youre looking for something more relaxing, read INVITE & INDULGE and see how a

full moon massage treatment at Hotel Tugu Bali will pamper you with an extra-ordinary

    spa experience.

We also have four dishes to dig into in the Seminyak area, and the latest attraction

in Canggu, The Escape Hunt Experience Bali, that will let you play detective. Dont

forget that this month the Balinese will celebrate the fi rst day of the Saka Year, also

known as Nyepi, the Silent Day, which falls on March 21 fl ip through REST &

RELAXATION and fi nd out how staying at AYANA Resort and Spa Bali will keep you

    entertained all during the day.

All in all, we hope you enjoy exploring the island. Who knows, maybe you will fi nd

DECODING COLORS THROUGH THE EYES OF BALINESE CULTURE

    READ BETWEEN THE COLORS

  • BALI&BEYOND MARCH 2015 23

A BLINK OF AN EYE300BC is claimed to be the fi rst year

of the study of optical phenomenon.

Ever since then, scientists have been

trying to analyze all the illusions that

come to our brain from our eyes

as the open gates. Until now, color

is one of the most joyful subjects

in scientifi c discussions, and it has

been a fantastic mystery not only

to the scientists but also to most of

us thanks to Sir Isaac Newton who

invented color wheel in the year

1666, now recognized as one of

the greatest discoveries for its ability

to help us comprehend the colors

    that we see.

COLOR AND CULTUREColors are decoded differently

by each culture. In the Renaissance

era, green was the symbol of

    fertility. A masterpiece by Jan

Van Eyck in the year 1434 titled

Giovanni Arnolfi ni and His Bride

    shows a beautiful bride wearing

an immaculate green dress to mark

her fertility. But to most Westerners

white is the perfect color for a bridal

gown, while to some of the Chinese

a white gown is inappropriate for

a bride because they believe that

    white represents mourning. Black to

    many cultures represents evil and

    sadness, while to urban modernists,

black is chic. It is rather interesting

more than complicating to know how

    cultures have different perceptions

    towards color.

BALIS ANGELSThe color concept here in Bali is

strongly infl uenced by the Hindu

    religion. The Balinese believe in

    nine guardian angels Gods

    manifestations that guard the island

from the points of the compass

    known as Dewata Nawa Sanga.

Each guardian angel has its own

color to represent its purpose as

    follows:

    Black (North, guarded by Wisnu)

Colors are decoded differently by each culture. In

the Renaissance era, green was the symbol of fertility.

    will be protected from negative

energy. And thats why every time

    a Balinese holds a house-blessing

    ceremony, they draw three lines

in black, white, and red on every

    pillar.

    COLOR GALOREThese interesting interpretations

of color have proven that culture

plays a signifi cant role in how

    people see colors. Even though

there is lots of research available

    that regresses color with certain

situations, it is our belief that matters

the most. And if you fi nd yourself

trapped in a long argument about

    color, just agree to disagree.

Because colors are only debris of

a huge amount of information that

comes to our brain translated by

    our eyes.

    holiness, and extinction.

THE TRI DATU COLORThe tri datu color is the combination

of white, black and red. You may

fi nd some Balinese wearing a tri

datu bracelet, as they believe that

the bracelet will help them fi nd

    strength in living their lives.

The idea of strength here is not

    physical but more to self-awareness

and control to help one in

avoiding doing bad things in life.

The tri datu colors are also used

in many of the traditional Balinese

    ceremonies, such as the house-

    blessing ceremony. It is believed

    Since it was fi rst

    established nine years

    ago, the spa academy

    Bali BISA in Sanur has

    been sending their

graduates on to become spa talent

at top-notch spas and hotels around

    the world. Britain-born founder

Penny Elllis talks to us about how the

    school helps the local community.

Bali & Beyond (BB): How did you

come up with the idea of opening a

    spa school in Bali?

Penny Ellis (PE): I was working in

    Malaysia and my contract ended

when I was offered a job in Bali.

Thats how I got here. But the new

B&B: How do you source the

    teachers?

    PE: Our teachers are locals

because we try to give back to

    the community. They have to

    have good English and minimum

of two-year experience as a spa

therapist. Working overseas is a plus

because it means they are used to

    working with international clients.

First, we put them in a three-month

    program. They have to understand

    our standards and SOP (Standard

    Operation Procedures) but more

    importantly, we teach them how

to teach and train. They are well

    trained and their knowledge is

    always increasing.

B&B: What are the qualifi cations you

    use to teach the students?

PE: In the beginning we were

running with our Bali BISA training

that I designed. Then we applied

    for the CIBTAC (Confederation

    of International Beauty Therapy

    and Cosmetology) qualifi cations

from Britain we now have 12

    CIBTAC qualifi cations that are

job didnt work out. So I thought,

what am I going to do? The obvious

choice would be spa because thats

what I have been doing all my life.

I did my research and found that

Bali has a million spas but no spa

schools. And thats the reason. At

that time, I thought Im going to do

a school with the intention of always

    following the international standards.

B&B: Your students range from locals

to those from all over the world

PE: Its a surprise! Its not what I

was expected. When I founded the

school, I thought our students would

all be Indonesians. But in reality,

about 98 percent of our students

    are from overseas. Our school

    is not expensive by international

standards, but we have the quality

and the standards. As for Indonesian

students, we give discounts and a

    sponsorship program. We have

    many overseas companies wanting

our students and they support our

    students by giving sponsorships.

    required in many countries today.

    Last year CIBTAC endorsed one

    of our programs, the Balinese

    massage, which really puts

    Indonesia, especially Bali, on the

map. We have applied for eight

more programs, and they were all

accepted. This now puts Bali BISA

    on the world stage.

B&B: What else do you teach other

    than spa therapies?

PE: We teach them how to

create spa products. We have a

    preparation area where students

mix things and they love it. We

    only use Indonesian ingredients

and all the oils are from Bali. We

    also have anatomy and physiology

classes for those who want to learn

    sports and pregnancy massage. Its

    important for them to understand

the body. And we provide spa

    management classes.

B&B: How do you help your students

to get a job after they graduate?

PE: We have so many spas and

hotels from around the world asking

for our students. We send them

the CVs and put our students in

touch with those who are looking

    for therapists. We follow our

    students development as well,

for instance how they fi rst work

    in the management division and

then become a spa director. Its

wonderful! I love to see Indonesians

grow. When they fi rst come here,

they are shy and can hardly speak

English. Then I get to see them grow

and become successful in the spa

    industry. Lovely.

B&B: What do you think is the main

    asset of Balinese spa therapists?

PE: The Balinese have the natural

heart and touch. And thats why the

world wants them. This is actually

something Asians have. Its in their

heart and no one can teach them

that and thats why they become

    good therapists. A spa therapist

deals with people and their body,

so you have to have love in the heart

and understand all about the body,

tensions, and muscles. They need to

know how to help a client and make

    them feel wonderful.

B&B: Any upcoming projects for Bali

    BISA in the near future?

PE: We are going to take the

    company worldwide. Its already

in motion. For instance, I will be

going to Kenya help them set up

our school. Thats the next stage of

Bali BISA. To offer business liaise

and franchises. Hopefully all this will

    be good.

(Full Moon) and Tilem (New Moon)

Massage Energy of the Bali Moon

(Rp. 810,000++) is certainly a no

    ordinary massage session. Intrinsic

    to ancient Balinese Hindu traditions

    and revolving around the moons

magic and energy, this is a spiritual

    experience that penetrates the soul

not just pampers tired muscles. To the

Balinese, Full and New Moon days

are highly signifi cant with purifi cation

ceremonies carried out to wash away

    sins and celebrate Rwa Binneda

the two energies of life good and

    evil, darkness and brightness.

    This unique massage is available

any evening of the month as the

moon, in whatever form, is always

up there. However, it is much better

to book on the actual evening of a

full moon like I did, or at least those

evenings before or after, to benefi t

from all the spiritual energy and good

fortune emitted from the full moon

rays. And lets face it; a full moon

over the ocean sure looks hypnotic.

WAX AND WANEOf course, Nengah is not an

    ordinary therapist. This Balinese

lady, blessed by a Hindu priest, has

    special powers to perform mantras

    and ceremonies as she takes

charge of all Hotel Tugus resident

spirits. Whatever day of the month,

this special ritual starts at 6 p.m. and

    full moons circular movements and

energy, then winding down to gentle

    long strokes. No tepid, pampering

    massaging here. Nengahs hands

    bear an almost man-like strength

    with her grip.

    The treatment uses island-sourced

    organic ingredients based on

ancient traditions, just like the other

    Waroeng Djamoe Spas treatments.

    During the massage, richly aromatic

natural oils such as frangipani or

    sandalwood are lavishly slathered

over the skin. Balinese people believe

that bathing under the full-moon light

    in water perfumed by Frangipani

petals (the islands iconic fl ower)

washes away impurities. Thus, I was

left alone for 20 minutes to serenely

    sunset time, with Nengah performing

a small Hindu ceremony out front

on Canggu Beach. My feet were

    cleansed with seawater from along

the shoreline and I was splashed

with blessed holy water from Pura

    Batu Bolong, Tugus beachfront

neighbor and one of Balis most

    sacred temples.

    Primed and ready, I followed

Nengah off the beach to one of the

    chambers, Gubug Nglamun Leha-

    leha (a Javanese expression for

    daydreaming and lazing). The rustic

    thatched pavilion is discreetly hidden

by tropical foliage set on the hotels

    manicured lawns. All very simplistic,

But thats not all. A butler is at

    your service anytime, anywhere,

    assistance. Whether to pick you

up with a buggy or brew you a

cup of coffee, said the butler after

    But that doesnt mean theres

nothing you can do to spend the

    day, especially when you are

only that, you will also be able to

indulge in the facilities at RIMBA

    Jimbaran Bali by AYANA the

    The resort is offering Silent

SILENCE STILLThe Balinese celebrate the fi rst day

of Saka Year unlike any other New

Year celebrations in any part of the

    world. This celebration is celebrated

with silence and seclusion instead of

dynamic and lively events. This year,

the Silent Day will fall on March 21.

    During the Silent Day, activities

are limited since guests are not

allowed to go outside the hotel area.

    But thankfully, hotels and resorts

have the privilege of catering to their

guests as normal the only time

you may feel different is probably

during the night when all the lights

are dimmed or even turned off

    THE RUNNERS PARADISE

    As one of the largest

    communities

    in Indonesia,

    IndoRunners has

    appealed to many

people since it was fi rst established

in 2011 in Jakarta. With its aim

    of spreading the running virus

    throughout the nation, IndoRunners

is the fi rst to socialize the importance

of a healthy lifestyle through social

    media, which then attracted many

    health-conscious patrons.

    Expanding to the island in

    2012, IndoRunners Bali has been

    persistently striving to educate the

local audience to have a better

    understanding about proper training

without forgetting to have fun with it.

The community has become a family

that is motivated to give Bali a new

term, not only as a surfers paradise

the sand is wet to give you a more

steady pace. Want to make it more

fun? Run barefoot but do watch out

for small coral. Chasing the sunset

is also worth it as long as you dont

mind the crowds on the sand.

JIMBARAN AND ULUWATUJimbaran and Uluwatu have plenty

    of tropical jungle tracks where

    the scenery of secluded beaches

awaits you towards the end. Fresh

oxygen and fun dirt tracks are only

a few of the many reasons why

KUTA, LEGIAN AND SEMINYAKIf you like running on the beach

The community has erected a fl ag

in Sanur and set the spot to be one

of the must-try running tracks every

of Bali and ends with a view of the

NUSA DUAHome to many luxury hotels and

they are well hidden. And no, you

dont get to use a calculator when it

    comes to numbers.

    Our group consisted of four

    people. When everyone was ready

our game-master led us to the room

where our mystery was waiting for

us to unlock. There was only one last

    thing she mentioned before locking

us in. If you need any help, you

can call me for hints, she says with

    a mysterious smile. But remember,

one hint is going to cost you

A big timer displayed on one side

ITS A RACE!The timer on the wall showed

    Our game-master has been waiting

However, she did come and help us

stuck and we couldnt thank her

    enough! As mentioned before, one

hint cost one minute, which meant

though we were done in 45 minutes,

we solved our mystery in 49 minutes.

Not too bad for a beginner, I guess?

with up to fi ve people and that is

actually the point of the game. This

game is defi nitely not a one-man

show since the aim is to make the

team become more solid. To crack

the code, you have to work as a

team. You need to know what the

others have found and help each

other in solving the riddles. Thats

    why The Escape Hunt Experience

Bali is not just fun to play with family

and close friends but also with

colleagues it is great for a team-

    building agenda.

For a group of two the cost is US$

30/person, while a team of three

    costs US$ 28/person. A four-player

game is US$ 25/person, and for

    fi ve-players is US$ 22/person. Dont

forget to check for promotions upon

    booking and whether they have

changed the games if you want to

    revisit the place.

Want to make it more fun? Get

six to ten people together, book two

rooms with the same theme, and split

the group into two. Then race each

other to see which team can solve

the mystery fi rst. Let the best team

win! And dont forget that our team

The locals will tell you that it

The walk from the carpark to the

breath-taking view of the falls takes

    approximately 30 minutes, and

another 30 to 40 minutes to get to

    trip including exploring the gorge

On a fi nal note, please take care

    with young children. A wetsuit

NESTLED IN THE BARISAN HILLS OF WEST SUMATRA, BUKITTINGGI BOASTS A UNIQUE MODERN LIFE THAT IS STILL TRUE TO ITS ROOTS AND HOLDS A CANDLE FOR A BETTER FUTURE

    THE DREAMY HIGHLAND

  • BALI&BEYOND MARCH 2015 65

    Bukittinggi, the icon of the

    Minangkabau plateau

    of West Sumatra, has

    transformed itself into a

city that strives to fi nd

    the perfect balance between history,

    culture and modernity. Dreams of

a better future are the foundation

of the new city concept, born from

those who share the most profound

    love of their birthplace.

One of them is Elvira, a native of

Bukittinggi that I met in Padang, the

capital city of West Sumatra. She is

one of the few people who believe

    that development in Bukittinggi

    will help improve the sustainability

of its people, nature and culture.

    However, development here is

considered a lot of work, although

    Bukittinggi played an important role

in the history of Indonesia when it

was once appointed as the countrys

capital city shortly after the Dutch

    had taken over Yogyakarta.

THE STARS OF THE HILLSIt was still dusk when I sipped a

cup of Solok black coffee at Rimbun

Coffee on Jalan Ahmad Yani in

Kampung Cino while gazing up at

the pigeons and swifts fl ying about,

looking for places to build their nests

    under the Limpapeh Bridge where

the city life of Bukittinggi revolves.

From a zoo to a traditional market,

from offi ces to hotels, all are lined up

    here, including the famous landmark

    Jam Gadang (the Gadang Clock).

Stars began to twinkle when a

cold breeze started to swirl around

me it was as expected considering

the location of the city. With Mount

Merapi on one side and Mount

    Singgalang on the other side,

    Bukittinggi stands on the Barisan

Hills that lie along the island of

    Sumatra.

    Morning fog was still thick

when I walked down the path

    to Bukit Ambacang Racetrack. I

    could hear some children cheering

as they rode their bikes, and see

    long-tailed monkeys playing with

bamboo clumps in the yard of a

    rumah gadang a traditional house

    in West Sumatra. I immediately

recalled the paintings of Moi Indie

and their colorful representation of a

    beautiful hometown.

The morning air was fi lled with

    the sound of horses whinnying

    while the others were running

around the track with a rider on

    their backs. Horses are important

    for transportation and entertainment

    here thats why horse tournaments

are fully supported by the local

    government. Even on a national

    scale, horses from West Sumatra

keep on winning a lot of awards.

CHARMING SHOPPESI left Bukit Ambacang on a bendi a

    traditional carriage and traveled

back to the busy city. Jam Gadang

    was already packed with bendis

parking on the curbs, while visitors

and hawkers took shortcuts to Pasar

    Atas, a traditional market called

Loods. Built by the Dutch in the

1890s, Loods was the place where

    Chinese and Indian merchants sold

    INDONESIAtheir goods. Now, many residents

    of Bukittinggi are the descendants

    of those merchants. Indeed, the

    traditional market is a great

    representation of the citys identity

that is well worth a visit.

    Outstanding Minangkabau

    embroideries were on display

    while souvenirs were lined up

on the pavement under blue and

    orange sheets. This market is

    most recommended for those who

    are looking for a socio-cultural

    experience in Bukittinggi.

    The culinary selections at Pasar

    Atas are also tempting. Grilled

    bananas, dried food for takeout,

and even the well-known nasi kapau

are available. It would have been

such a shame not to take a bite of

nasi kapau, although the price may

have been a little bit unreasonable

    but I didnt mind.

THE GREAT WALLThe sun was getting higher so I

went back to Rimbun Coffee. I was

enjoying an ice cappuccino as a

group of high school students nearby

    couldnt stop talking about the

selfi es they had taken at the Great

Wall. I was still minding my own

business until fi nally curiosity got the

best of me, so I started to question

them about the destination they were

chatting about. I was lost for words

when they showed me their pictures

of the Great Wall at Sianok

    Canyon.

The Great Wall, a new tourist

    destination that was inaugurated in

2013, has some pros and cons but

it does not change Bukittinggi as a

great destination. On the edge of

Sianok Canyon, for instance, I found

    monkeys were running along the

    iron railings where colorful paintings

were on display. For me, they are

the natural brush that paints the

    earth alive.

The day was fading when I got

back to Rimbun Coffee Shop to end

the day. I sat on the balcony in the

company of a black Solok and a

    notebook, writing down notes about

all the places I had visited and

conversations I had had that day,

    recording the hopes of Bukittinggi

    that, hopefully, will never be

    drowned by its own dreams.

The river cutting through the area is

once connected Glodok to Sunda Kelapa

in the old days when the colony was

Dharma Bhakti. Completed in 1650, the

temple went through a full restoration in

1755 after it was destroyed during the

massacre of the Chinese by the Dutch.

Vihara Dharma Bhakti was built as a

dedication to the Goddess Kwan Im,

which explains why many pilgrims visit

the temple to honor and pray to her.

Next to Vihara Dharma Bhakti is

Vihara Dharma Sakti, a newer temple

that is also known as Kelenteng Petak

    Sembilan (Petak Sembilan Temple).

Consisting of two parts, Tee Tjang

Dharma Sakti houses the God of

    Prosperity, which encourages many

people to come to pray for prosperity

and wealth. But Vihara Dharma Sakti

is more than just a place for prayer.

It is also captivating for photography,

with all the lanterns and spiral incense

sticks hanging from the ceiling. And

just like other temples, both temples

are dominated by the color red and

    decorated with engravings and

    calligraphy on the walls.

    Every year there are eight

celebrations, including Cap Go Meh and

Chinese New Year, that have people

fl ocking to these temples to pray and

give offerings. During regular days there

are less visitors, although smoke from
