FROM THE PRESIDENT
The charter date of any organization always sets the stage for something big later.Like all great things, there is always a beginning. Pioneering efforts make avenues forchange. A change in time has been embraced by an overwhelming majority who have chosento transcend ordinary lives and make a difference in a community which they have called theirown.
Laying the cornerstone of any edifice is by no means an easy task. Birth pains takethe lion share of the woes as the organization strives to be the best it can be. Looking forward
meant throwing caution to the wind and overcoming the waves of challenges that have made its path to greatness even moremeaningful to the forefathers whose visions are transformed into bliss.
Leading the way is the inevitable by-product of past sacrifices which have eventually spelled the difference betweenits life and death. Moving on to a new level has, thus, made matters of routine, matters of uncertainty yet these matters of
uncertainty have immensely defined who we are as an organization. Our ability to weather the storm and conquer theobstacles have made us a by word among those who follow in our stead.
Ninety-three years has passed since our American forefathers have brought to Philippine shores the concept ofRotary, then a novel brainchild of Paul Harris, a lawyer who has sought to find meaning and purpose in the life he lives.Filipino communities have grown and with the Filipinos innate nature for helping one another through the bayanihan spirit,Rotary has found a home in every Filipinos heart.
The motto of Service Above Self has spawned a myriad of offsprings from what is now known as the icon of servicein the archipelago, the Rotary Club of Manila. Built throughout the years by captains of industry and bulwarks of theirrespective professions, the Rotary Club of Manila has been a silent witness to the painful realities of a third world life poorallocation of scarce resources, marginalized communities, limited access to quality education and an entire gamut of illeffects which has left the Filipino whose country is teeming with world class natural resources, a meager share of what is onthe table as he moves forward to rise above the harsh vicissitudes of life.
It is on these sensitive matters that each and every one of us, Manila Rotarians, have made a collective and lastingmark on their lives and which has deeply defined our very nature as a socio-civic organization whose international acclaimlies in the network of chapters who are willing and able to augment the situations which do not paint a clear picture ofsuccess.
Made-up of men of wisdom and men of promise, our organization has, indeed, set the pace for others to benchmark. We have set the bar and laid our commitment. Now, is the time to reap and harvest the fruits of our undertakings as wecommemorate the laying of the anchor of an avenue of service on Philippine soil. Storm after storm, earthquake afterearthquake, catastrophe after catastrophe, we have risen to the occasion and made our presence felt throughout the land. Now is the time to bask in its shining glory as we set the stage for the advent of the centennial of Rotary not only in the
Philippines, but also in Asia. The 1st of June 2012, a Friday, should be a red letter day for all of us Manila Rotarians, it being the 93rd anniversary
of our club. So that this early we are personally inviting each and everyone of you, my fellow Manila Rotarians, tocommemorate this defining moment by marking its date in your calendar to surely remember to attend.
Under the watchful eyes of PP Cesar Ubaldo and a team committed to perfection, the stage has been set for thecelebration, and the road towards our Clubs centenary is gaining ground. The posh Manila Hotel which has, for many years, been a permanent home to each and every Manila Rotarian, re-opens its doors to the club. In lieu of a Thursday weeklyluncheon meeting, an evening of merry-making and nostalgia awaits each and every Manila Rotarian, their honored guests, friends and family.
No less than the Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines, the Honorable Rotarian Jejomar C. Binay, hasbeen invited as guest of honor and speaker during the occasion along with our Matched Clubs all over Asia and the world.
Then, you can sit back and enjoy yourselves with the music of the internationally acclaimed Philippine Madrigal Singers andour very own World-Famous Music Chorale, while they serenade you to your hearts delight. You may also join and perform,or just watch, the traditional Filipino Rigodon de Honor and later dance away the evening with the rhythmic music of El SavorLatino. The Committee is making sure that our anniversary will be another affair to remember.

Registration time and cocktails is 6:00 pm while the Call-to-Order is at 7:00 pm. Do not miss this rare opportunityto witness the rekindling and renewal of ties with our Matched Clubs from around the globe and the ceremonial lighting of the
93rd anniversary cake of our club as we all join hands in making this worthwhile endeavour a continuing success, as wetravel the short but winding road to our centennial in 2019.
Moving together in Manila Rotary is, indeed, a sight to behold. Make this clich your battle cry as we all movemountains and build communities in the spirit of Rotary. Together for mankind has never been this good.

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CHILD CARE
.
FOLIC ACID
Elias D. Adamos, M.D.
Folic acid is a vitamin B. It is a synthetic form of folate. Folate plays a vital role in the production and maintenanceof the cells in our body. Folate prevents changes in the DNA (one of the materials that dictate cell functions and replication. The other one is RNA) that may lead to cancer. In young people or in periods of growth and development, such as in
infancy and childhood, folate is needed to propel normal growth and development. It is also important in pregnancy.
Can Folic Acid boost the immune system?Yes. The deficiency of folate can make the function of our immune system sluggish. It may even impair immunity.
Enough supply of Folic Acid can help make and repair DNA and thus boost our immune system.
What foods are rich in Folic Acid or Folate?Vegetables, fruits, dried bean and peas as well as peanuts are rich in folic acid.
What is the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Folic Acid? The RDA of folate from either natural or fortified foods or in tablet or capsule form is 400 mcg a day. Pregnant
women should take 600 mcg per day to reduce the risk neural tube defects in their babies. Alcohol reduces the absorptionof folate and thus those who take in alcohol in regular basis have to take in more than the RDA for folate. Folate enhancesthe excretion of alcohol through the kidneys. Girls and boys, who are in their childhood and adolescence, who are in theirgrowing-up years and are active in sports need more folate than the usual daily allowance.
What is the maximum tolerable dose of Folic Acid? The maximum tolerable dose of folic acid whether it may be from supplements or natural or fortified foods is 1,000
mcg per day.
Is there a Folic Acid overdose or toxicity?Folic acid is a water-soluble vitamin. Any excess is excreted in the urine. Even if you reached or took in the
tolerable limit the chance of toxicity is small. However, long term effects of over-intake of vitamins, is uncertain. There is nohealth risk or overdose in natural foods that are rich in folic acid. Thus you can eat more fruits and vegetables to get yourneeded folic acid. If youre not a fruit or vegetable person then you need a daily intake of 400mcg synthetic folic acid tab let.
