Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots or-ganization that is growing fast across the USA. We take re-tired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More informa-tion can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected]. (A)

Tour de FarmEASTON – Hit the road and help save farmland and our scenic landscapes! The Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) and Saratoga P.L.A.N. present the third annual Tour de Farm in partnership with the Saratoga National Historical Park on Sunday, July 29. Proceeds from the Tour de Farm will be used by ASA and Saratoga P.L.A.N. to conserve farmland and pro-tect the region’s scenic and historical landscape for future generations. Riders choose between two routes: a 15-mile ride for recreational riders that stays east of the Hudson and a 35-mile ride for intermediate riders that crosses the river and goes through the Battlefield. Both routes include interesting stops at farms and historical sites, and a post-ride picnic featuring the delicious bounty of local farms. The tour begins and ends at the 418-acre Hand Melon Farm, 533 Wilbur Ave., Easton, which ASA is in the process of conserving. A post-ride pic-nic at the farm is included in registration costs. Pre-registration for Tour de Farm is strongly encouraged! Registration is on-line at www.biketourdefarm.wordpress.com, by phone at 518-692-7285 or 518-587-4054, or stop by either ASA or Saratoga P.L.A.N.’s offices. (A)

“Quality Is Our Reputation”25 Years

In last week’s column, I’d just discovered how easily my purple amaranthus self-sowed. After enjoying and experimenting with them for a couple of years, I noticed another variety offered in a seed catalog called ‘Elephant Head’. The fun I was having with my purple variety made me want to give ‘Elephant Head’ a try. Elephant Head’s flowers supposedly resemble an uplifted, trumpeting head of an elephant. It was hard for me to get the same impression from the picture in the catalog but, poetic license aside, it looked like an interesting plant. Seeds were ordered and started inside over winter and planted out in spring. Just like its purple cousin, Elephant Head took off quickly. By the end of July, I had a lovely group of 3’ plants. As advertised, they produced large, dense clusters of tiny purple flowers. I hesitate to use the term “flowers”; the flower clusters were more of a dense, fuzzy, elongated clump. I must admit that I was having a hard time seeing much of a resemblance to and elephant’s head. To my mind, they looked more like an obscene gesture often exchanged by motorists during fits of road rage. Regardless of its attitude problem, I enjoyed the presence of Elephant Head Amaranthus in the flower-bed.

I assumed that Elephant Head would self-sow as readily as its cousin did so I didn’t bother to collect any seeds that fall. The following spring, I was disappointed to find only three or four coming up. Though few in number, they did quite well. That fall, I pulled them up by the roots and hung them upside down indoors. I wrapped newspaper around them to catch the seeds. Amaranthus seeds are about the size of poppy seeds and each flower head produced thousands of them. I grew a bunch of them the following year and now they, along with my original purple ones from Mont Pleasant come up unbidden all throughout the flowerbed. Now I simply pull out the ones I don’t want and leave the ones I do. That is some easy gardening!

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot more about this interesting family of plants. Like corn, squash, potatoes, marigolds and poinsettias and many other of our favorites, amaranthus comes to us from the ancient Inca and Aztec gardens of Central America. These cultures grew amaranthus as a grain rather than for its ornamental qualities. An-cient gardeners harvested the seeds which were served as a side dish much like we would rice or potatoes. Unlike rice or potatoes however, amaranthus seeds contain as much as 18% protein and are rich in iron, calcium, lysine and phosphorus. There is also evidence that they toasted the seeds until they popped and ate them as a snack. Sort of miniature popcorn. The grain varieties of amaranthus range in height from 4’ to 8’ and are adaptive to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Interestingly, this adaptability is causing a resurgence in popularity among farmers dealing with soils of marginal quality. It may be that the easy-to-grow amaranthus will play an increasingly important role as we attempt to feed the exploding population in the decades to come.

Like many of the plants brought to Europe from the New World during from the 1500s on, amaranthus enjoyed a good bit of popularity there. Plant breeders worked their magic and developed some ornamental varieties you may have heard of. You may remember your grandmother growing ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’. This amaranthus, despite its gloomy name, is a striking plant of 3’ to 5’ with long, flowing tassels that drape elegantly to the ground. There’s another group of amaranthus that features colorful leaves (called bracts) that simulate flowers much like a poinsettia does. ‘Joseph’s Coat’ is one you might recognize. ‘Joseph’s Coat’ grows to about 2’ and the top-most leaves are accented with creamy white and scarlet. Others of this type feature burgundy leaves topped with red bracts. This spring’s Burpee seed catalog offered a yellow topped variety aptly named ‘Poinsettia Mix’.

While you will likely find ‘Joseph’s Coat’ and ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’ on the seed racks at the garden center in spring, the rest will probably need to be mail ordered. I’ve now seen my original purple variety in the Thompson & Morgan seed catalog under the name ‘Intense Purple’. Another seed catalog, Seeds of Change, offers some of the original grain varieties of amaranthus as well as the amusing ‘Elephant’s Head’ variety that I enjoy in my flowerbed.

If you order and grow amaranthus, you probably won’t have to ever order them again if you take a few minutes in the fall to gather several thousand seeds for yourself and your friends. Thanks for the read.

Selling Your House: Which 'Fixes' Are Worth It to Lure Buyers? If you're one of those homeowners who's been moaning about how hard it's been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasn't been completely devastated just because a flood of new foreclosures is expected to hit the market as a result of the recent $25 billion "robo-signing" mortgage settlement.

In fact, while studies have shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you're within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are "move-in-ready," so if yours isn't ... well, there's your problem.

"Buyers generally look at 'as-is' properties that need work, and say 'I'll pass,'" says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby's in Montclair, N.J. "That's why I tell clients it's worth making certain strategic fixes if they're looking for quicker and more profitable sales."

So, which "fixes" are worth it, and which aren't? Read on:

Worth It: Addressing major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy a house with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said.

Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. "Whatever you do might not suit the buyer," says O'Neill, "and meanwhile, you'd have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars." Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode.

Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore.

Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same "taste" issue as above.

Worth It: Anything that enhances "curb appeal." If the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it's been whipped by a tornado, say, chances are you've already lost the sale. "It's a huge turn-off," says O'Neill, "and makes buyers predisposed to find even more things they don't like." So, if your roof needs replacing, check out the Value Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (the largest roofing manufacturer in North America), which have the look of luxury shingles but at very affordable prices (www.gaf.com).

Not Worth It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of "you" there is, the more likely pro-spective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there.

Get Better Gas Mileage With New Technology (NewsUSA) - Gas prices are getting as dangerously high as un-employment rates, and both mean a whole new level of penny pinching for the nation's 99 percent.

As drivers spend about $4 per gallon, finding ways to get better gas mileage is more important than ever. Fortunately, affordable technology is finally catching up to the escalating problem.

Some auto companies are trying to ease the burden of astronomical gas prices by improving technology and making it accessible.

Vision Motor Company is priming its widespread release of alternative vehicles using com-pressed natural gas (CNG), which can cut fuel costs by up to 80 percent. Besides polluting as much as 90 percent less than traditional gasoline, natural gas vehicles can get 45 miles per gallon on CNG fuel.

But, according to Vision chairman Bob Smith, new fuel-efficient spark plugs called Pulstar Pulse Plugs have truly enabled the newest car, SEERngv, to go mainstream. The Enerpulse Preci-sion Combustion Ignition (PCI) technology in Pulstar Pulse Plugs also increases miles per gallon and significantly reduces hydrocarbon emissions.

"Combustion stability at idle and cold start was also improved," explained Smith. "VMC is very excited to offer this value-added technology."

If you're not yet able to benefit from natural gas vehicles and other enhanced technology, there are more ways to conserve fuel and increase efficiency.

* Install new spark plugs. For the average car, installing quality spark plugs -- like Pulstar Pulse Plugs -- can make your vehicle perform better than new, mileage included.

* Choose routes carefully. The shortest route may not be the most fuel efficient if it's littered with stoplights and traffic. Avoid traffic lights if possible, but if not, shifting into neutral will give your transmission a break.

* Replace air filters. You probably don't need to replace the air filter as often as mechanics suggest, but keep an eye on it. Filters tend to last 20,000 or 30,000 miles, and a clean filter can improve mileage by 10 percent.

* Drive smoothly. We know you're not going to slow down, but sudden starts, stops and jerky driving hinder fuel economy. Slamming on the brakes wears down break pads and forces you to accelerate more, adding as much as one-third to your gas bill.
