Sales will continue until we are sold out. We are open every day from 10:00am- 8:00pm and on weekends we open at 9:00am. This year we will have ap- proximately 800 trees to choose from. We hope you will stop by and make getting your family’s tree from Rotary a Holiday Tradition. EMPTY STOCKING PROJECT BEGINS SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Children’s Committee, a nonprofit organization that helps children and families, is once again un- dertaking their Empty Stocking Project. This vital and rewarding project provides holiday gifts and necessities to over 1,000 children and teens in Saratoga County. At the heart of this venture are the many people and organizations, who generously sponsor a child each year by purchasing gifts from a “wish list”. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Saratoga County Children’s Committee, sponsoring a child or for more in- formation please leave a voice message at 484-1236. Cash donations are also accepted and may be sent to The Saratoga County Children’s Commit- tee, P.O. Box 1254, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. COMMUNITY EMERGENCY CORPS & TOYS FOR TOTS BALLSTON SPA – During this upcoming holiday season, Community Emer- gency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an official drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. For 2014, we will be partnering with the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Office to broaden the scope of our support for the national Toys for Tots campaign. This campaign has reached out and assisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this wonderful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. In last year’s campaign the program reached their goal of collecting over 120,000 toys and distributing them to deserving children, making their holiday’s memorable ones. Our program has grown incredibly in 5 years, through your donations, from about 40 toys our first year to well over 200 toys last season. We are hoping that by taking on the Sheriff ’s Department as a partner, we will see a significant increase in donations with the ad- ditional exposure throughout Saratoga County. New, unwrapped toys, games, books, puzzles, sport balls, dolls, snow toys, and anything for kids from infant to teens are all appreciated. Stuffed toys are the only excep- tion. We have already started to receive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or evenings. If we are not at the building due to answering emergency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need. For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

HOW TO GIVE HOLIDAY GIFT CARDS

Nearly every man or woman has hit that all too familiar wall when holiday shopping for friends and family. While many people might be a cinch to shop for, there always seems to be one stickler on holiday shopping lists, and fi nding the right gift for that person can be an exercise in patience and per-severance.

But even the most patient shopper has his or her limits, and many people fi nd themselves giving gift cards to those friends or family members who seemingly have everything already. Such cards make great gifts, but only when gift giv-ers employ a few tricks of the gift card trade.

Buy directly from the retailer. Its easy to be duped by a counterfeit gift card, which can be embarrassing for both the gift giver and its eventual recipient. Counterfeit gift cards are big business for criminals who prey on gift givers during the holiday season. Only buy gift cards directly from the retailer, as cards sold by other sources, such as an online auction site, may be stolen or counterfeit. You dont want to be the person who gave a stolen or counterfeit card, and your friend or fam-

ily member does not want to be subjected to an inquiry as to why he or she is attempting to use a stolen or counterfeit card.

Examine the card before leaving the store. Once a cashier or customer service employee hands you a gift card, examine it for tampering before leaving the store. Some criminals gain access to gift cards, even those that appear to be behind lock and key, to learn the PIN number associated with the card. Once they have the PIN, recipients can then recreate their own card, using the stolen PIN to activate and make purchas-es on their counterfeit cards long before the real card is sold to you. If you detect any damage, ask for a new card before leaving the store.

Include a gift receipt with the card. When giving a gift card, dont forget to include the gift receipt. The gift receipt not only verifi es the value of the gift card, but also includes the date the card was purchased. Thats important information, as many companies begin to charge fees, some of which may be exorbitant, on unused cards after a predetermined period of time. Recipients who have the gift receipt wont have to haggle with retailers about the value of the card should that ever be in dispute, and the receipt also can serve as a remind-

er that the recipient needs to use the card before a given date to avoid fees.

Consider a general purpose gift card. If that stickler on your holiday shopping list is especially diffi cult to shop for, then you might want to consider a general purpose gift card is-sued by a company such as American Express, MasterCard or Visa. These cards generally allow recipients to use their gift

wherever they choose, whether its to put gas in their tank or buy groceries. That versatility is valuable if you truly have no idea what your friend or family

member needs or where he or she likes to shop. One notable disadvantage to general purpose gift cards is that they tend to come with more fees than more traditional gift cards pur-chased directly from specifi c retailers. Investigate these fees and fi nd a card that charges no fees or only minimal fees.

Gift cards make great gifts and can bail out frustrated holiday shoppers who simply cant fi nd that perfect gift for a friend or family member. But when shopping for gift cards, be sure to exercise caution before buying a card so your loved is not put in an embarrassing or costly situation.

DID YOU KNOW?Though there is no official data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for children of all-time, its fair to assume the lovable Sesame Street figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk N Talk Elmo was a popular childrens gift, as was Rock N Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

HOW TO ESTABLISH GIFT SPENDING LIMITS

As the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves financially come the holiday season.

According to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercus-sions for the rest of the year.

In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch themselves thin on Valentines Day, birthdays, and Mothers Day and Fathers Day. One way to make shop-ping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the sub-ject of gift limits. Discuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a figure and then determine the average, using that figure as your spending limit.

Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to afford their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and youre spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is established, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot afford to do so.

Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of continued on next page

experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest go-ing on vacation together to make better use of your collec-tive funds. A well-timed extended family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may alleviate the stress of the holiday season, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each per-son to work with can make for a more peaceful holiday sea-son by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shopping.

Rocco is a sweet boxer/bulldog mix (DNA test) who weighs ~ 50 pounds. He is 8 years old, neutered, completely vetted, and microchipped. Rocco loves to curl up on the couch and enjoys when his human is nearby. He is generally low key; in fact, he can seem a bit aloof at first, but only because he needs time

to trust that you will not give up on him. Rocco is housebroken and will let you know when he needs a potty break. When

necessary he can easily be crated, although he has not been left alone for extended amounts of time. A fenced-in yard is

a must because Rocco deserves to run and play outside. Rocco should be an only pet - he needs to be with a family that fo-cuses solely on him. In fact a one-on-one situation or an older couple might be best for him. He is smart and affectionate and

will be devoted to you if you give him a chance.

Princess Leia ~ a lovely 5 yr. old grey tiger with dilute orange highlights and absolutely stunning green eyes. Princess Leia was rescued from the outdoors with her five kittens and has been very busy being a good mom taking care of them. Now her kittens are weaned and its her turn to be cared for and spoiled. Princess Leia is a little shy when you first meet her but once she gets to know you she loves attention. She has

extremely soft fur, is gentle and relatively quiet. Princess Leia is good with both dogs and cats and would do well with older children Princess Leia is spayed, up to date on her shots and

    negative for FIV and FeLV.

Harper is a very confident 2 year-old little lady. She enjoys sleeping in the sun all day and curling up on soft bed covers. She loves playing with anything and everything left to her for toys. She enjoys chasing bugs as her little hunter self. Harper is a little shy and quite independent preferring the

other cats to people, although sometimes she will follow you around until she gets what she wants (dinner or toys or a

quick pet). She would be perfect for a family that is looking to find a companion for an existing pet or a family that

would like to adopt more than one cat. Harper is up to date on her vaccinations, spayed and has tested negative for FIV

and Feline Leukemia. For more information, please contact her foster mother, Karla, at [email protected]

PROPERLY PREPPING ENGINES FOR WINTER STORAGE

(NAPS)As colder weather approaches, its time to start get-ting your classic cars, motorcycles, boats, lawn mowers and other seasonal equipment ready for storage. But before you stash them away for the winter, invest a few minutes in prop-er storage techniques to avoid costly engine problems and ensure they start up quickly come spring.

Proper storage of your engine is becoming more important, as most fuel today contains ethanol, which absorbs moisture from the air. Over time when an engine is stored, water will accumulate, separate from the fuel and sink to the bottom of your tank. This can lead to problems like corrosion, stalling and permanent engine damage, which could not only drain your time but your wallet come springtime.

To properly prepare your engines for storage, here are some tips to guide the process:

    1. Start by cleaning your machine inside and outside. Make sure all residue and dirt are removed.

    2. If your machine has a removable battery, remove it and leave a small trickle charge.

    3. Fill your fuel tank up with fresh gasoline, leaving the tank 95 percent full. Avoid draining your fuel tank at all costs, as an empty

fuel tank allows for moisture to gather, which leads to corrosion, gum and varnish buildup.

    4. Once your tank is full, stabilize your fuel with a stabilizer like STA-BIL Stor-age Fuel Stabilizer, adding one ounce to every 2.5 gal-lons of gasoline, and run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the entire fuel system is treated and stabilized. Sta-bilizing the fuel will protect the fuel system from corro-sion, gum and varnish build-up and keeps the fuel fresh for up to 12 months.

    5. Change your oil prior to storage, following the recommended amount in your owners manual. Before changing the oil, run the en-gine briefl y to warm the oil, to help remove old oil and contaminants.

    6. Lastly, store your vehi-cles and machines in a cool, dry place and cover them to help keep dust and critters at bay.

By investing a little time and energy up front this fall, you will save time, energy and potentially money come springtime when you take your favorite toys and equip-ment out of storage. To learn more about winter storage tips and stabilizers, visit www.sta-bil.com.

Before storing cars, boats, motorcycles and seasonal outdoor power equipment for winter, make sure to properly prepare them to avoid costly repairs and damage.
