SOUTHERN ADIRONDACK ATA MARTIAL ARTSMALTA - Let’s Get Started - Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced programs. New beginners start class every month. Each new student starts slowly and progresses at his or her own rate of speed. You should begin by attending at least twice per week. Each class lasts about thirty minutes. Don’t be concerned if you’re out of shape or think the techniques look too difficult, you’ll be in class with other beginners like yourself. While there is little doubt that most Americans would like to have the skill of a Black Belt, there still exists a huge amount of misinformation about the martial art. We hope that your time here will have provided you with some sensible reasons for studying Taekwondo, America’s most popular form of martial art. Thanks for taking time to learn about us and we really hope that you decide to join us. It was once said, “The hardest part of any journey is the taking of the first step”. Congratulations you have already taken it. For more information call the Malta Community center at 518-899-4411, or visit online at www.maltaparksrec.com.

TIRE MAINTENANCE IS KEY TO SAFE SUMMER DRIVING
(NAPS)—Tires are the only thing between you and the road, so it’s imperative motorists stay on top of tire maintenance. Proper tire maintenance is important all year, but especially in the summer months as the temperature starts heating up and the frequency of tire blowouts increases.
Improper tire care contributes to 195 fatalities and 6,300 injuries each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crashes occur annually. Simply checking your tire pressure can help you and your passengers stay safe during your next summer journey.
To get the most from your tires this summer, here are five maintenance tips from the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer—Discount Tire:
1. Get Pressure Right— Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may lose up to one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pressure per month. The specific inflation pressure number may be found on the vehicle placard located inside the driver’s door. Don’t forget those trailer tires. Checking the tire pressure for boat, travel and utility trailers is as important as your car or truck.
2. Don’t Overload—Overloading your vehicle or trailer decreases fuel economy due to in-creased cargo weight. Handling, control and braking are also negatively impacted.
3. Rotate Before You Go—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves road performance. Tires rotated every 5,000 miles have longer life and will help maximize your tire investment.
4. Straighten Up—Proper wheel alignment provides safe, predictable vehicle control and helps tires wear evenly and last longer. If your tires squeal when you turn or if you notice your steering wheel veers to one side while driving straight, it’s time to get your wheels re-aligned.
5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful—Lack of tread affects the tire’s ability to grip the road, especially in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, which indicates something is wrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusually smooth areas may decrease traction and increase the risk of road accidents.
“Maintaining tire pressure is one of the most critical things motorists can do to improve road safety while getting the most from their tires,” said Mark Marrufo of Discount Tire. “Improperly in flated tires lead to decreased steering and braking control as well as excessive tire wear and
fuel consumption. Taking five minutes each month to inspect your tires will go a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe.”
A Five-Minute Fix
Checking tire pressure and tread is easy and can pay dividends when it comes to fuel economy and handling. Don’t go by appearances. Use a tire gauge to check the pressure since a tire can be 50 percent underinflated but still not appear flat.
Make it a habit to check tire pressure every month and always before a long journey. Use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure and
don’t forget to check the spare and trailer tires.
“Most people forget to check the pressure in the spare tire and come to find that when they need it, the spare is flat,” said Marrufo. “This simple check could keep you from a costly tow if you get stuck with a flat.”
Road trippers should also check tire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you see Abe Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

As you head out on your next summer journey, take five and check your tires.

SLOW DOWN TO GET AROUND TRASH TRUCKS
(NAPS)—Road accidents caused by distracted or speeding drivers are a huge risk for the more than 135,000 men and women of the waste and recycling industry who are out in force each day keeping our communities clean and healthy—but you can be part of the solution.
Just as most drivers tend to drive carefully when they see a school bus, in many places, it’s now required to give trash col-lection vehicles the courtesy of slowing down when trying to get around them.
The Problem
Some drivers try to speed up to avoid garbage trucks. Others don’t even realize one is nearby, since they’re such familiar presences. Because of such roadway dangers, trash collec-tion is one of the country’s most dangerous professions.
What’s Being Done
To help, the National Waste & Recycling Association’s (NW&RA’s) “Slow Down to Get Around” campaign urges driv-ers to be more careful around solid waste collection vehicles.
“It’s critically important for everyone’s safety to slow down to get around garbage trucks,” said Sharon H. Kneiss, presi-dent and CEO of NW&RA, which represents the waste and recycling companies in the U.S. “It only takes one smart and cautious driver to set an example for the rest of the cars on the road.”
Many people are asking their community leaders about legis-
lation and regulations aimed at keeping trash collectors and drivers safer on the roads. Several states have recently passed such laws.

This is a great time of year for gardeners. In spite of the sluggish start, recent warmth
has our gardens leaping to life . There are home grown fl owers in vases in the living room,
dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial fl owers follow their blooming cycle
with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually
begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My an-
nual fl owers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from
mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to
well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beauti-
ful “frame” for the fl owerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the
hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and
vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went
quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that
are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspber-
ries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them
to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the.
All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their
show. Later, this show will include althea, The Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea are
gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double fl owering, I greatly admire the single
fl owering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their fl ower closely resembles that of the
tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single fl owering altheas weren’t avail-
able when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those.
Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders.
There are even varieties that have a bi-colored fl ower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as
well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in
nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on.
Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus
although the fl owers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground
to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus fl owers range in color
from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t
enough, the fl owers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town
since they are in fl ower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our
area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the
giant fl owers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately,
they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even
longer for a well-established clump.
If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be pa-
tient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show
any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my
yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the fi rst leaves appear on my althea and the
mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily
deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

Jazz
Vegas is a 7-year old Boxer/Hound mix who is very sweet, very gentle, thoughtful, and well behaved. Because he loves being
around people, he wants to be wherever you are. Vegas is a big snugger and a little bit of a goof ball. He has perfect potty habits; he always waits until we take him outside to “go”. We are working
on introducing Vegas to other dogs. It would better for him to go to a home with older kids. Like all HOPE dogs, Vegas is neutered, up to
date on his shots, and micro-chipped.
Check out Fiona’s “Bette Davis Eyes” - a truly stunning 8 month old girl with bunny-soft fur. Fiona’s favorite thing is “window shopping” for birds and squirrels. When’s she’s not stalking the wildlife from behind glass she is typically napping (yes, in the window and probably dreaming of squirrel soup). Fiona is very
independent - happy to hang out on her own during the day she just wants a little bit of attention morning and night - except if you’ve got out the interactive toys which she absolutely goes
crazy for! Fiona would do best if she is adopted by a family with a quiet home and would do great with a kitty companion (and a window sill). Because she was born wild she is cautious to accept new humans into her personal space and will need a loving new family willing to earn her trust— the rewards once you win her over are great — a massive purr, bedtime sleeping companion and lots and lots of leg rubs. Fiona has lived with other cats
and dogs. If you have a busy life or work long hours this low-maintenance lady might be just the beautiful face to welcome you home each day. Fiona has been spayed, is up to date on all
her shots and tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV.

like and LOVES to swim, even leaving his beloved tennis balls behind for a chance to play in water. Jazz seems to be very good with
children, but as he has never lived with children, he would probably do better with older kids. Jazz is vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped. He qualifies for our Seniors program – a qualified senior
citizen (age 65 or above) may adopt a HOPE pet 7 years of age or older free of charge.

GET A GRIP -- TIPS FOR SAFER
DRIVING ON WET ROADS
(NewsUSA) - It's that time of the year again -- time for wetter roads and, unfortu-nately, more accidents.
Russell Shepherd, a mechan-ical engineer for Michelin North America and self-pro-claimed "tire nerd," has cer-
tainly earned his informal ti-tle as evident by his 15 years of driving in almost every type of weather condition imaginable. Most concern-ing for him -- wet weather.
"Most people don't realize how much wet roads aff ect their driving," says Shepherd.
"When roads become wet, it takes longer to stop and more time to react, making it more important
than normal to pay attention to your car and other driv-ers."
So, what can the average driver do? Shepard suggests getting to the bottom of things fi rst -- with the tires. Here are some tips:
* Check all tires regularly
for tread wear and pressure. Changes in season and tem-peratures make it a good time to check both.
* Be cautious from the start. As soon as it starts raining, traction can become nega-tively aff ected. It only takes a small amount of water to mix with oil and dust to cre-ate a slick surface.
* Find the right tire. A tire with a grip designed to han-dle wet roads, such as the new Michelin Premier A/S tire, can make a big diff er-ence. This tire has a unique rubber compound engi-neered to maximize traction, and two sets of grooves to help channel water away
from the tires to maintain that traction. The second set of grooves is hidden when the tire is new, but emerges as the tire wears.
This distinctive design fea-ture maintains the tire's ability to funnel water away, even when worn, which pro-longs the life of the tire and enhances driver safety.
* Get in touch with your car. Take time to learn how your car responds on wet roads. Is the steering looser than nor-mal? Are you sliding when you brake? Do you notice the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) kicking in? If so, your tires could be losing their grip. Slow down and
get your tires checked as soon as possible.
For more information about wet-weather driving and choosing the right tire for your car, visit www.michelin-man.com/.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, START YOUR
ENGINES (NAPS)—For dependable ve-hicle operation, it’s essential,
for starters, to prevent igni-tion system failure. That way, you won’t be left stranded by the side of the road.
How To Tell
“Symptoms of ignition
problems include dimming of headlights and interior lights, illuminated ‘Check En-gine’ and battery lights, and failure of accessories to op-erate,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council—the source of in-formation for the “Be Car Care Aware” campaign pro-moting regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. “It’s a good idea to look into these symptoms immediate-ly to prevent ignition failure from bringing your car to a complete stop.”
What To Do
Driving habits such as fre-quent engine on-off cycles cause more wear on the starter than a simple trip back and forth to work. Other factors, including driv-ing and weather conditions, mileage, vehicle age and excessive electrical draws like in-vehicle entertainment systems, can aff ect the igni-
tion system as well.
Since the fuel injection sys-tem and car battery are linked to the ignition system, a problem can be diffi cult to diagnose because it may be caused by one of many fac-tors, such as a dead car bat-tery, faulty ignition switch, worn-out spark plugs, bad fuel injectors, ignition coil problems, fuel pump failure or starter motor failure.
“It’s a good idea to include an ignition system checkup in your vehicle maintenance schedule,” added White.
Where To Learn More
To help motorists follow a vehicle maintenance pro-gram, a free digital “Car Care Guide” can be found on the council’s website at www.carcare.org/car-care-guide.
The guide is in English and Spanish and includes infor-mation on service interval schedules, questions to ask a technician, and tips to drive smart and save money.
