SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE AT THE PUMPThe cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still looking for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driving less will save money, and doing so also reduces fuel consumption and contributes to fewer emissions entering the air, both of which can benefit the en-vironment.
But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commitments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more often than they might prefer. Such drivers may be looking
for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortunately there are several ways to do just that.
• Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of today’s auto manu-facturers now design their vehicles so they can run smoothly on regular unleaded gas, which is typically listed as “87 oc-tane” at filling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often considerably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many drivers may even choose regu-lar unleaded, but opt for premium gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will in-crease performance of older engines. But many engines are
designed to run smoothly and efficient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unneces-sary to choose premium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.
• Buy when the time is right. Prices at filling stations fluctuate on a daily basis, so unless your car is running on empty, avoid filling up when the prices seem especially high. Some pa-tience may pay off with several dollars in savings, and those savings can add up to a significant amount of money over time.
• Become a less aggressive driver. Drivers with hectic sched-ules tend to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driving aggressively is unsafe and potentially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the California Energy Commis-sion’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour in-stead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.
• Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempting to leave that roof rack on top of your car after a recent camp-
ing trip, but such unneces-sary cargo in or on your car makes it harder for the car to get from point A to point B. That forces the car to con-sume more fuel. Unless your immediate plans include hitting the links or hunker-ing down at a nearby camp-site, remove unnecessary weight from the car so your next trip to the gas station is less expensive.
The cost of fuel can make trips to the filling station into costly excursions. But drivers willing to reconsider conventional wisdom and change their driving habits can save substantial amounts of money over time.

HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADWAYSSpring showers certainly may bring flower laters on, but they also contribute to challenging driving conditions. Early spring weather can be fickle, vacillating between dry, wet and even icy conditions. Drivers need to remain on their toes to safely traverse roadways near and far.
Wet roadways and poor driving conditions contribute to thousands of road accidents each and every year. As roads get wet, oil and other substances rise to the surface of the pavement, which can quickly become slippery and compromise the traction offered by tires. Accord-ing to the United States Department of Transportation, there are around 707,000 automobile crashes each year due to rain.
Heavy rains also may lead to puddles, which can obscure hazards on the roadway. Cars may stall out in puddles or hydroplane, which occurs when cars coast along the surface of the
water. Puddles also can be splashed by oncoming cars, leading to visibility issues.
It is in every driver’s best interest to use caution when driving on wet roads. The following tips can help prevent accidents, injuries and even fatali-ties during the rainy season.
• Slow down. Drivers should drive slower when roads are wet and when rain compromises visibil-ity. It can take up to three times longer to stop on
a wet road than a dry one. By slowing down you will be able to stop or veer out of the way of danger.
• Leave room. When driving on wet roads, leave more room between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Again, this plays into stopping distance. Tailgating increases your risk of rear-ending a vehicle if you cannot stop in time on a wet roadway.
• Stay alert. It can be easy to be lulled into complacency while driving. But staying alert and conscious of every detail going on around you can reduce your risk of accident when driving in less than ideal conditions.
• Skip cruise control. As a driver, you want to remain in control of acceleration and speed, rather than leaving it up to the cruise control system. If you begin to hydroplane on cruise control, the car may actually speed up.
• Use your headlights. Headlights can light up the road in front of you, helping illuminate potential hazards. Lights on a car also make your vehicle more visible to others on the road. Always turn on the headlights in inclement weather.
• Avoid jerky movements. Keep a steady pace and the vehicle in control. Jerking the wheel or accelerating and braking in a erratic fashion can cause the vehicle to spin out or skid on wet roads.
• Check your tires. Inspect your tires for tread wear and air pressure. Tires should be rotated as part of routine maintenance. Poorly performing tires are a significant safety risk. If you live in an area known for a lot of rain, invest in tires designed for wet road conditions.
Don’t let wet weather get the best of you. Slow down, stay visible and be on the alert.

Even though it’s a little early to get out in the vegetable garden, except for planting pea seeds, there are still important gardening tasks to tackle. Like other avid perennial gardeners, I’ve been poking around my beds to see who’s waking up. The first crocus is poking up and the daffodils and tulips won’t be far behind. These signs of activity are welcome indeed. Even though it’s cool, it’s time to apply our fertilizer so, as the plants emerge from hibernation, nutrients will be waiting in the soil for them. Early feeding sets the stage for healthy plants all season long. Lawns, trees, shrubs and perennials all benefit from early feeding but which plant food is best for what? When you are out shopping for a lawn food, first consider the condition of your lawn. If your lawn is healthy and well established, you’re looking for a regular high nitrogen lawn food. I recommend using a lawn food that provides nitrogen in fast AND slow release forms. You will often see “bargain” lawn foods advertised. This lawn food will be cheap but may not be a bargain. Often the nitrogen in these cheap lawn foods releases so quickly that the grass plants cannot utilize it. It’s like getting a week’s worth of food served to for supper on Monday and then going hungry the rest of the week. It doesn’t make sense for you or your lawn. Look on the bag to see if the nitrogen is derived from more than one or two sources. Lawn foods that are formulated to be fast and slow release, they cost a bit more but you’ll be better off in the long run since you will feed less often. Each year I side dress my perennials with additional food. The food I choose for them will be slow release and fairly balanced with slightly more phosphorous for more flowers. Espoma Flower-tone is my current favorite. There are other quality products available. I again want to avoid cheap, fast release fertilizer. To feed the perennials, I’ll roughen up the soil around each plant being sure to stay far enough away from the crown to avoid damaging the roots. I’ll sprinkle the fertilizer sparingly and according to the directions on the label around the plant being careful not to get any on the crown. Then I’ll lightly mix the food into the soil with my trusty cultivator and then water. For trees and large shrubs, an easy way to apply nutrients is by pounding in some of those tree food spikes that are made of compressed fertilizer. When you go to the garden center, you’ll notice that there are different formulas for different plants. The spikes for evergreens and shade trees are higher in nitrogen and those for fruit tree are higher in phosphorus to enhance fruit production. You may have large, flowering shrubs like lilacs that you want to feed with spikes. The fruit tree spikes, with their higher phosphorus formula would make them appropriate for use on flowering shrubs as well. Be careful to follow the directions when using fertilizer spikes. They should be driven into the ground AWAY from the trunk or stem of the plant you’re feeding. The tiny roots that take up the nutrients are about the same distance from the trunk as the outermost branch tips. For trees, it’s easy to figure out where to place the spikes. Simply walk away from the trunk until you are standing under the outermost branch tips and pound in the spikes at that circumference. How many spikes you’ll need to use is determined by the diameter of the trunk. There are directions on the package. Follow them. More isn’t necessarily better. If you use too many spikes or place them too close to the trunk, you may do more harm than good. For smaller shrubs and perennials, you’ll want to use a gentle, granular food. I like the Espoma products. You can pound holes around small shrubs (under the outermost branch tips) and pour the appropriate amount of plant food into them. When in doubt, less is best. On the perennials, I’ll dig a shallow trench well away from the crown of the plant and apply a modest amount of gentle Espoma Flower-tone plant food. Follow the recommendations on the package and, again, when in doubt, less is best. If you can get out there at the first opportunity and get your nutrients into the soil early, your landscape plants will be able to take advantage of them and have the best season possible. Thanks for the read

SARATOGA CO. - Care Links offers free services - visiting, transportation, “handy helping”, and shopping to adults 60 years or older. This seventeen year old nonprofit serves Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Malta, Ballston, Charlton, and Me-chanicville residents. We need to recruit volunteers to help accomplish this job. Are you free for the summer to possibly consider taking time to give assistance to someone who has just stopped driving and cannot get to the doctor? Maybe you can help them stay in their home. You pick the day and time. Having a rewarding purpose in your life is just a phone call away- 399-3262.
PATROON TOASTMASTERS
CAPITAL DISTRICT - Become a competent communica-tor and confident leader. Patroon Toastmasters offers an educational and sup-portive environment to our members. We meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 510 Albany-Shaker Road in Loudonville to hone our communication skills for personal or professional reasons. Check out http://Pa-troon.TastmastersClubs.org for more information. Get started today. We welcome guests!
SEARCH AND RESCUE VOLUNTEERS NEEDEDCAPITAL DISTRICT - The Tri-State Emergency team is recruiting volunteers to provide wild land and underwater searches. This includes all aspects of field and underwater search. The tri-state emergency team responds when requested by NYS forest rangers and other police agencies throughout New York State, Western Vermont and Massachusetts. We are looking for certified scuba divers, experienced boat handlers, and people who enjoy hiking and the outdoors in general who wish to help people in need. The team will provide training and com-plete support as needed. Our headquarters is located in Waterford. Applicants need not live in Waterford to volunteer. If interested, please call 518-237-6744 or visit our website at www.tri-stateemergencyteam.org

SMALL ENGINES MAY HAVE BIG FUTURES
The move is on to produce more fuel-efficient automo-biles. Although alternative fuels have garnered sig-nificant publicity in recent years, some automakers are simply shrinking the stan-dard car engine.
Automakers have been pro-ducing three-cylinder en-gines for some time, but are just now starting to reveal such engines to the public. While these types of engines have traditionally been as-sociated with lawn mowers, mopeds and snowmobiles, a handful of cars are now being equipped with three-cylinder engines to increase
fuel efficiency.
While three-cylinder en-gines have had the unfor-tunate stereotype of being puny next to vehicles tout-ing more under the hood, experts say that advances in engine technology have made it possible for three-cylinder engines to produce more power with less. Ford, Nissan and BMW are just some of the automakers experimenting with three-cylinder engines while also promoting other innova-tions to boost efficiency. Streamlined aerodynamics, carbon fiber and improved horsepower can change public perceptions of cars with engines that have fewer cylinders.
In addition to requiring less fuel, three-cylinder engines take up less space in engine compartments, freeing up more room for interior pas-senger space. This can create more space in traditionally compact vehicles. Smaller engines can improve safety because there is less risk that the engine will penetrate the
interior in a front-end colli-sion.
While some three-cylinder vehicles have lackluster responses with accelera-tion and road performance, others offer comparable horsepower to some larger engines. According to the automotive website Jalop-nik, many modern three-cylinder engines offer power comparable to that offered by V8 engines in the 1970s.
The three-cylinder offer-ings may be concentrated to a few brands right now, but the advantages of these smaller engines may make them more prevalent in the years to come.
