RELAY FOR LIFE NIGHTSARATOGA SPRINGS - The American Cancer Society’s largest national fundraiser is Relay for Life and Saratoga is having one June 6-7th beginning at 6 PM Friday night at the East Side Recreation Field. It is a family time to celebrate those who have survived cancer and honor the caregivers. It be-gins with a walk around the track by more than 150 survivors. It is so encouraging for the survivors and for people hoping to eventually be a survivor. Next comes the Remembering Ceremony about 10 pm that honors those who have lost their battle with cancer. This is done with luminaria bags that people may purchase in honor (H) and memory (M) of loved ones and friends lost to cancer or fighting cancer. These bags may be purchased by calling Debbie at 518-885-6506. These are decorated bags with candles inside that are lit during the Remembering Ceremony and line the track all night while teams walk the track. Later there is a Fight Back ceremony that does just that against cancer. There is also more infor-mation on www.relayforlife.org/saratogaspringsny . Teams have been selling luminaries and coming up with ways to raise money to donate to the Relay to fight back against can-cer and hope to find a cure. Consider purchasing a luminaria or just come and check out the Relay for Life June 6th at 6 PM at the East Side Recreation Field on Lake Avenue in Saratoga.

NATURE WALK: WILD EDIBLES

BALLSTON SPA - Friends of the Kayaderosseras will be hosting a free Nature Walk at Kelley Park in Ballston Spa, May 24th, from 10 am to noon. Members of the public are invited to join the walk, which starts at the park’s pavilion. The focus of the .5 mile walk is identify-ing and harvesting edible wild plants. After the walk, several prepared samples of wild edibles will be available for tasting, such as sumac tea, garlic-mustard pesto, pickled sunchokes, and dandelion-root coff ee. The group will walk along the John Romano Nature Trail in Kelley Park, about .5 mile of fl at, mostly wooded, terrain. Part of the trail fol-lows the Kayaderosseras Creek, so children should be well-supervised. The woods can be buggy, so bring insect repel-lent. The walk will take place rain or shine. Along with edible plants, the woods of Kelley Park are home to many types of birds, insects and small mammals. A walk along the nature trail can also be a good opportunity for bird song and wild-fl ower identifi cation, and fi nding animal tracks in the muddy stream banks. The walk will be led by Margaret Kinosian, who has been cooking with wild edibles for several years and is the Director of Outreach and Education with Friends of the Kayaderosseras.

WHIPPLE CITY FESTIVAL MUSIC LINE - UP

GREENWICH - The Greenwich Chamber of Commerce an-nounces the musical line-up for the 2014 Whipple City Fes-tival occurring Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14. Friday, June 13, 2014, following the conclusion of the parade, local musical group, Big Easy Revue, will take the stage at the ga-zebo at Mowry Park beginning at 6:30 p.m. Led by Green-wich resident Matt Edwards, Big Easy Revue (formerly known as Buck2Fifty) is a 5 piece band that brings a swinging, Ca-lypso and soulful mix of music which sounds like it comes straight from the streets of New Orleans. On Saturday, June 14, 2014, the gazebo will be alive with more musicians to entertain the crowds. Get Up Jack takes the stage at 1 p.m. playing Irish and contemporary music. Get Up Jack is a new musical adventure from former area favorite Hair of the Dog members, John Haggerty, Mike DeAngelis and Scott Apicelli, along with three other area musicians. If you enjoyed Hair of the Dog last year, you will love Get Up Jack this year! Stick around Saturday night and enjoy the country-bluegrass-rock sounds of Eastbound Jesus beginning at 7 p.m. Greenwich native brothers Luke and Carl Anderson are joined by other talented musicians as they perform their own original songs that are sure to be crowd favorites.

Emma

Clarence

Backyard Litter

The owner of this litter could not care less about them and had just not gotten around to dumping them at the shelter when rescue found them. They were im-mediately taken to the vets and treated

for a skin condition and given shots and wormed. They have had a very hard start to life and now deserve wonderful homes from here on out. All these

pups are wonderful with excellent dispositions and will make wonderful pets.

Emma was a rescue from down south who was adopted from us about 2 months ago. One of the children she lived

with has allergies and so the family returned her to us. Emma is a sweet, beautiful and gentle pup. Now that she

has grown a bit she appears to have some Great Dane in her and will likely be on the bigger side. Emma is also

good with other dogs and cats. She is about 4 months old and up to date on her shots. This pup is going to be a real

gem if you like slightly bigger dogs.

This little guy was found as a stray and brought to the vets office before going to the shelter. The vet thought he was

such a good boy he called rescue to see if we could help him out. Clarence is now neutered, up to date on shots and ready

for his forever home.

ank you to our troops, veterans and

Remembering Why We Celebrate Memorial Day

Okay I confess –my mind usually thinks of the three-day weekend at the end of May as being the first chance I will get each year to relax and unwind for an extended period on my boat. Or maybe take a trip, or get some extra work done in the yard. It’s easy to forget that this upcoming holiday is called Memorial Day for a reason. Memorial Day was cre-ated to remember US military veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our freedom, and died while serving our country. According to the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the earliest com-memorations were held in the years immediately following the Civil War, with May chosen because it also was the month in which the war between the states ended. Some believe that the end of May was also significant because it is a time when flowers are in bloom all over the country. Each year since its inception, crowds flock to Arlington National Cemetery to remember our fallen veterans, placing American flags and flowers throughout the gravesite. The VA website says that Maj. Gen. John A. Logan’s original “decoration day” orders back in 1868 contained the fol-lowing instructions: “We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. ... Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond

mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” This weekend, as we enjoy our barbecue, visit relatives, wax our car, launch the boat, cut the lawn or do countless other activities, we do well to remember the general’s words. The men and women we honor on Memorial Day paid with their lives the price necessary to keep us free in an often dangerous and treacherous world.

Maverick

Midge

Maverick is great company! He loves to socialize and when not busy checking out every nook and cranny he can’t resist stalking, chasing, batting and carrying

around every toy in reach. In addition to being playful Maverick loves a good scratch which he usually asks

for with a silent meow and a thankful loud purr. A true charmer with his gentle and easy-going nature

Maverick will fit into almost any household. If Maverick had his preference he’d love

to be adopted with his little sister Midge who always provides him with a soft spot to sleep.

Maverick is comfortable around dogs and cats.He and Midge are spayed & neutered, up to date on all his shots and tested negative for both FIV and

Feline Leukemia.

Midge is a shy girl but once she decides your an ok human its all purrs, leg rubs and head-butts. Midge prefers to keep all four paws on the ground but enjoys

lap-time as long as its her idea. When she is not seeking out affection with a soft meow Midge is usually off on her own playing with toys — anything round and fuzzy

will do. Can’t find the cat toys? — Midge probably has them tucked away in her bed for safe keeping! If Midge got her wish she’d be adopted with her big brother

Maverick who looks out for her and always lets her have his leftovers. Midge is spayed and up to date on her shots, she gets along with both cats and dogs.

Here we are with Memorial Day weekend upon us once again and there have been precious few days to pull weed and catch up on all the planting we want to do. It seems that every time I can line up some free time with dry weather, I have to spend that time mowing the lawn. Assuming that it doesn’t rain, it looks like Memorial Day weekend will be the time to scramble to plant. Amusingly, this is really the time I’d be putting most of my “tropical” vegetables in anyway. .

Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, I’ll have fi nally gotten my tomatoes planted and I’ll be just about ready to get my peppers in. Peppers are more sensitive to soil temperature than all the other vegetable we plant. Peppers won’t perform well until SOIL temperatures are 65 degrees or higher. If the season is cool, I’ll enclose them in what I call a “pepperdome’. This is just a cute name for four stakes that I’ll wrap with horticultural fabric right to the ground covering my little pepper transplants. This fabric will trap heat and hold heat around the peppers on cool nights. Once summer weather arrives in earnest, I’ll remove the “pepperdome” and let the peppers bathe in direct sunlight. I also like to cover the soil beneath my peppers with black plastic to generate even more heat. If the summer gets really hot, I can cover the black plastic with straw to keep the soil temperature under control. In September, when temperatures start dropping, I’ll brush the straw back to let the sun warm up the plastic and soil again. There’s a little saying I use to remind myself not to plant my peppers too early: PLANTING PEPPERS PREMATURELY POSTPONES THE PERIOD OF PRIME PRODUCTION but PROVIDING PEPPERS WITH PROTECTION PERPETU-ATES PROFUSE, PROLONGED PRODUCTION.

Now I’m going to give you my annual rant about a strange gardening habits that I just can’t understand. It drives me crazy when I see someone who’s spent a lot of time (and probably money too) creating a beautiful fl owerbed or vegetable garden watering it with a lawn sprinkler or hand-held sprayer. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep from pulling off the road and giving them a “tune up”. I know that this is a habit borne of ignorance but it really isn’t at all good for the plants. Somehow the idea of spraying your plants with water seems “refreshing” and has a lot of appeal to people. Also, we’ve all seen those ads on TV that show the nice folks at some “mega warehouse chain” misting the fl owers. While it creates a lovely visual effect for the TV viewer, it is one of the worst possible things you can do to your plants. Why?

Remember that plants absorb moisture and nutrients with their ROOTS to replace moisture lost by the leaves through evaporation. When you wet the leaves, the plant isn’t able to grow until the leaves dry off. But this isn’t the worst of it! When you wet the leaves (especially in warm weather), you’re creating the perfect environment for fungal diseases to incubate and grow. Can anyone say “powdery mildew”?

In the vegetable garden, problems with plants that produce fl owers but never set fruit can almost always be traced to “spray-watering”. Spraying the plants with water washes the pollen out of the fl owers. Without this pollen, the bees can’t pollinate the fl owers. No pollen, no fruit or vegetables.

There are no good reasons to “spray-water” unless you’re shooting a commercial for one of those ignorant “mega warehouse chains” and there are many good reasons not to (cold water shocks the plants washes away pollen and promotes fungal diseases). As far as I’m concerned, the only acceptable way to water is to get the water into the soil while wetting the leaves and fl owers as little as possible. Soaker hoses can do this in permanent beds but I usually use my trusty watering wand. You’ve all seen these at the garden center and you probably think it’s just a handy device for watering hanging baskets that are too high to reach. In reality, the purpose of these wands is to help you direct water down into the soil among your plants without having to bend over with the hose. My watering wand is always attached to the end of my hose. Remember: lawn sprinklers have NO business anywhere in a fl ower or vegetable garden. Your hand held spray gun has no purpose in the yard at all unless you’re washing your car….end of rant and thanks for the read.

HOW TO CUT YOUR

COMMUTING COSTS

A daily commute can be physically stressful, but many people fi nd their daily trek to work fi nancially taxing as well. Commuting costs have risen considerably over the last de-cade-plus, as higher fuel costs have eaten into many house-hold budgets. But commut-ers accustomed to grinning and bearing it with regard to their daily grind might be surprised to learn that there are some ways they can cut their commuting costs and possibly even reduce some of the physical stress stemming from their daily odysseys to and from the offi ce. The fol-lowing are a handful of ways to trim the costs of your daily commute.

* Establish a ridesharing pro-gram at your offi ce. Research from the Center for Trans-portation at the Washington Policy Center in Seattle has shown that carpooling to work can be as much as 61 percent cheaper than driving alone. Many highways fea-ture commuter lanes that are exclusive to vehicles with two or more passengers. Veteran commuters know that such lanes tend to be the least congested lanes on the high-way, so taking advantage of the commuter lane by shar-

ing rides with one or more coworkers can save time as well as money. The benefi ts of ridesharing are numerous, and include saving money on fuel (sharing driving duties with just a single coworker immediately cuts your commuter fuel costs in half ); extends the life of your vehicle by reducing daily wear and tear; and also allows you one or two days a week to unwind during your commute while someone else takes the wheel.

* Ride a bike. Admittedly, men and women who aren't entirely healthy or those who live especially far away from the offi ce or in regions where the weather is often unpleasant may not be able to turn their bicycles into tools for cutting the costs as-sociated with their commutes. But riding a bicycle to the offi ce each day will cut your commute-related fuel costs by 100 per-cent while also providing a boost to your cardiovascular sys-tem. Regular cardiovascular exercise has been shown to reduce risk a person's for various conditions, including heart disease, while also reducing stress. Even riding a bike to the offi ce twice a week can cut your commute-related fuel costs by 40 percent, so if cycling to work is a realistic possibility for you, give it a try.

* Propose the idea of telecommuting to your employer. Many employers have grown more lax with regard to employees

working from home. Some employers recognize that less strict telecommuting policies make for happier and more loyal em-ployees, who can drastically reduce their childcare costs in addition to commuting costs by working from home. In addi-tion, employers can benefi t by moving into smaller offi ces with more aff ordable rents. Telecommuting one or two days a week can save you a substantial amount of money, so propose the idea to your employer, even suggesting a trial period to see if it's a viable option before either side makes a full commitment.

* Change your hours. Technology has made it easier than ever before for companies to abandon the typical 9-to-5 workday. Employees can now connect to company networks via external server connections at any time of day and even contact one an-other via email applications on their smartphones regardless of the time of day. Flex time, in which employees are allowed to work fl exible schedules so long as their work is getting done, enables employees to commute to and from the offi ce during off -peak hours when roads are less congested than they are during rush hour. This saves you the time you spend sitting in rush hour traffi c while also cutting back on fuel consumption that only increases the more your car sits idling in traffi c.

ODOMETER FRAUD CHEATS BUYERS

Purchasing a used vehicle carries some risks. A used car buyer may not know the complete history of the vehicle or if any shortcuts were taken regarding its maintenance. One increasingly common problem preowned vehicle buyers are running into is odometer fraud.

Consumers are estimated to lose billions of dollars due to odometer fraud, according to The National Highway Traf-fi c Safety Administration. Odometer tampering is a serious crime that can fool buyers into believing a vehicle has far fewer miles on it than it really does. Sellers are able to fraudu-lently market cars and trucks at higher prices based on lower odometer readings. People also may able to circumvent mile-age quotas on leased vehicles by turning back the odometer.

The U.S. Offi ce of Odometer Fraud Investigations has seen an escalation in this type of illegal activity. Increased demand for low-mileage used cars has made odometer tampering more profi table. The Consumer Federation of America esti-mates one in 10 cars have had their odometer rolled back.

According to CARFAX(R) Vehicle History Reports, “clocking” or “spinning” an odometer is relatively easy to do. While older cars had to have the odometer dial turned back by machine or manually, today’s digital dashboards enable crooks to reprogram digital odometers using inexpensive software. Many consumers do not learn of odometer fraud until it is too late.

Digital odometer fraud is diffi cult to detect because there are no moveable parts that can appear manipulated. Much like a hacked computer is often discovered too late, so, too, is a tampered odometer. However, there are some steps consum-ers can take to protect themselves from odometer fraud.

* Compare the mileage on the odometer to the mileage list-ed on maintenance or inspection records. Check oil-change stickers on windows as well.

* Look for inconsistent wear and tear on the vehicle com-pared to the miles on the odometer. An older car will have wear on the gas, break and clutch pedals. A vehicle with few-er than 20,000 miles should have its original tires.

* Check the mileage listed on the title with the odometer. If

the mileage notation is hard to read, this may indicate fraud.

* Request a vehicle history report to determine whether odometer rollback took place. This will match up the mileage reading according to the VIN number.

* If the guage on a mechanical odometer is crooked or mis-aligned, this may indicate tampering.

Odometer tampering is illegal. If the vehicle was sold with an altered odometer, the dealer or private seller could be li-able. If others are responsible, it is the sellers’ responsibility to locate them. Unfortunately, rollbacks are usually done by a third party, removed enough from the seller as not to in-criminate the person. This frequently makes prosecution dif-fi cult. It is up to the buyer to take proactive steps to avoid odometer fraud.

NEW RULES FOR LATCH

SYSTEM AND BIGGER KIDS

For years, the LATCH system standard for vehicles has been the preferred method of safely securing infant and child safety seats into a car. But the LATCH system many parents have grown accus-tomed to is changing. A new law says it is safer to stop us-ing LATCH with car seats that cater to older, heavier kids.

LATCH, which is an acro-nym for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, is a sys-

tem of restraints built directly into the seats and frames of vehicles. The LATCH system was introduced by the Na-tional Highway Traffi c Safety Administration as a new child restraint securement system in 1999 in response to the challenges posed with seatbelt installation of child safety seats. The system has been avail-able in many vehicle models since 2000. With LATCH, the child safety seat attaches to two an-chors imbedded in the seats of the car as well as another anchor point

located on the rear shelf, seat back, cargo area, or ceiling of the vehicle when used with forward-facing seats. Many safe-ty seats come equipped with LATCH straps that are compat-ible to the LATCH system in the vehicle.

While the LATCH system has helped maintain the safety of young passengers for more than 10 years, newer safety seats that accommodate larger children could be pushing the LATCH system boundaries. Lower anchors of the LATCH sys-tem take the majority of the force in a crash, and many are currently rated to restrain a seat and child with a combined weight of 65 pounds. There is not yet signifi cant evidence to suggest the anchors will hold up in a crash with a heavier seat/child combo. When the LATCH system was developed, many child safety seats maxed out at a 30-pound passenger limit.

Various health and safety organizations have deemed it safer to keep children in harnessed safety seats longer before mov-ing them to belted booster seats, which has propelled the in-dustry to develop seats that can hold older, heavier children. However, whether the LATCH system can handle the larger seats is largely unknown.

As a result, drivers who have a child and a car seat that to-gether weigh more than 65 pounds are urged to stop using the LATCH system to secure the safety seat into the car and rely on the vehicle’s seat belts instead. The new law was put into eff ect in the United States in February 2014 and may be adopted elsewhere as time goes on.

Using the car’s seat belts may require a refresher course in safety and how to route the belts properly. Refer to your ve-hicle owner’s manual as well as the instruction guide provid-ed with the child safety seat. Seat belts will need to be fully extended and “locked” before they can be routed through the safety seat. Drivers are advised to still use the top tether of the LATCH system to further secure the head of the safety seat.

Drivers unsure about regulations can consult with their pe-diatricians and have child safety seat installation checked at various police stations, fi re stations and fi rst aid buildings.

Parents and other caregivers need to stay abreast of changes in safety guidelines for their children, as recommendations for child safety seats are always evolving.

The child safety seat regulations that were in eff ect when he was a toddler may no longer be applicable now that he is a grade-schooler.
