NYSDOT TO HOST PUBLIC OPEN HOUSES FOR BRIDGE PROJECT

REXFORD - Work Proposed for the Rexford Bridge on Route 146 in Niskayuna and Clifton Park. The New York State De-partment of Transportation (NYSDOT) will host two public open houses regarding a proposed project to make improve-ments to the Rexford Bridge on State Route 146 and at the intersections of Route 146 with Aqueduct Road/Williams Road in the Town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County and the intersection with Riverview Road/Alplaus Road in the Town of Clifton Park, Saratoga County. The open houses will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Rexford Fire Station at 1601 Route 146 in Rexford (Clifton Park) and on January 30, 2014 starting at 7:00 p.m. at Niska-yuna Town Hall at 1 Niskayuna Circle in Niskayuna. The Nis-kayuna meeting will be a public hearing. A presentation on the project will be given at 7:00 p. m. followed by a time for public comments and questions. Staff from NYSDOT will be available to discuss the project in an informal environment before and after the presentation. Comments and input re-garding the project are welcome as part of NYSDOT’s con-tinual effort to encourage public participation in the devel-opment of transportation projects. The project proposes to replace the Rexford Bridge and provide improvements to the intersections. The current preferred alternative adds lanes to the intersections and provides a multi-use trail between the intersections. The traffic signal at the Aqueduct Road inter-section is proposed to be replaced by a roundabout. There is currently no schedule for project construction. The Rexford Fire Station and Niskayuna Town Hall are accessible to peo-ple with disabilities. The Department of Transportation will provide interpretive aids or services if requested prior to the meeting. Anyone who has concerns or observations about this intersection project but who is unable to attend the open house may either contact Richard Filkins, Project Manager, at (518) 457-9756 or write to: Richard Filkins, Project Manager, NYS Department of Transportation, Region 1 Design, 50 Wolf Road, Albany, NY 12232.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF

NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC off ers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your fi ling status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple fi ling jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefi t. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and fi ling requirements must be met. You must fi le a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to fi le. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

BROOKSIDE MUSEUM TO CLOSE IN JANUARYBALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County Historical Society announced that its headquarters, Brookside Museum, will be closed during the month of January. “Brookside has sustained some staggering losses in funding over the past few years,” said Joy Houle, Executive Director of the Saratoga County Historical Society. “This year (2013) has been particularly challenging since Saratoga County cut 100% support for the museum. Without that funding, something has to be cut. And we’d rather cut a month out of our year than a program like to Sheep to Shawl.” Brookside will be closed after December 31 and will reopen on Tuesday, February 4 at 10 a.m. The museum will host an opening reception on Friday, February 7 (6-9) for the tempo-rary exhibit titled, “The Women Who Work Here,” which features the creations of the museum’s female staff, Board, and volunteers.

JackJack is a 6-year old Dalmatian/Basset hound mix who is

neutered, up to date on shots, and micro-chipped. He's a sweet, good-natured dog who is housebroken and crate trained. Sweet Jack is friendly and rides well in the car. Jack needs to find a

home without cats and will make an excellent companion!

Yukon

Bronson

Benjamin

Yukon is a neutered 8-year old male, who is up to date on his shots. Need a weight loss buddy? Yukon is your guy! He

needs someone to help him trim down a bit more. Yukon came to us terribly overweight but has lost 20 pounds under the loving care of his HOPE foster. He’s such a low key

and loveable fellow. He’s a perfect angel at HOPE’s adoption clinics!

Yukon’s foster Mom says, “he is a foster home’s dream. And that is the absolute truth!” He’s pretty mild mannered and gets along with other polite dogs. Yukon’s feline foster-sis is

teaching him how to live with cats.

At 8 years old, Yukon is eligible for our Senior to Senior program (no adoption fee for a person over 65).

Benjamin is a sleek 1-year old neutered male who is up to date on his shots. Ben is a quiet and solitary cat. His nickname is “Gentle Ben” because he is not very curious,

sleeps a lot and is not phased by much of anything. Perhaps because he was abandoned behind an office building having

to survive all on his own; however, he does like to sit on your lap, but mostly prefers just napping in his favorite chair. He always looks forward to the laser pointer play sessions and

is extremely possessive with his bird toy. He spent some time in a home with dogs and seemed to get along just fine with them. If you are looking for a quiet, independent friend, Ben

is the cat for you!

Bronson is a very handsome solid black Siamese-like 7-month old kitten. He is a very people person cat, always welcomes meeting new human friends to play with and loves getting lots and lots of attention. Bronson is extremely curious and tends to get into

everything. Along with being playful and energetic, he loves sitting on your lap and being picked up for that occasional hug.

He gets along well with dogs and other cats. Bronson is neutered and up to date on his shots.

Spring – Summer

Spring – Summer Bridal GuideBridal Guide 2014

DID YOU KNOW?According to TheKnot.com, an online resource catering to couples planning their weddings, the most popular day to get married in 2013 was October 12. More than 24,000 couples who used TheKnot.com to plan their weddings listed 10-12-13 as their wedding dates. The next most popular date in 2013 was June 1. Though this might lead many to conclude that fall wed-dings were more popular than summer weddings, that’s not entirely true. TheKnot.com notes that June was the most popular month to marry in 2013, followed by September and October. In addition, where couples are tying the knot tends to influence when they exchange their vows. For example, November and December are the most popular months to tie the knot in Florida, where late-spring and early summer temperatures can be especially harsh.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT WEDDING RECEPTION FAVORS

Planning a perfect wedding is no small undertaking. From scheduling venues and hiring ven-dors to tasting menus, lots of decisions must be made when planning a wedding. But when the pieces fall into place, the entire day can be magical.

One of the final components of wed-dings are the favors guests will take home with them as mementos of the festivities. Though favors don’t require immediate attention, that does not mean couples should wait until the last minute to made decisions regard-ing their wedding favors.

Brides- and grooms-to-be should not underestimate the importance of handing out wedding favors, a tradi-tion with a rich history. A wedding favor is considered a symbol of good

will to guests, and there are many different wedding favors on the market. Finding the right one can take a little work. It is usually a good idea to find something that suits the theme of the wedding and is both long-lasting and practical. Try to avoid anything that is too kitschy.

A couple’s budget should be considered when choosing wedding favors. A couple may want to give their guests lavish gifts but should only do so if their budget allows. It may be chal-lenging for couples to find favors that fit the theme of their wedding, as well as their own per-sonalities and budgets. But it can be done. The following are some favor-finding guidelines.

Be creative

Wedding favors can be just about anything, so there’s no need to stick to Jordan almonds or wine bottle stop-pers. The more creative cou-ples are, the more receptive their guests will likely be. For example, for an autumn-theme wedding, fill mason jars with the ingredients for a spiced cake and give the recipe directions on a tag. For a summer wedding, gift guests with a sun and surf survival bag, full of sunblock, a beach towel and sunglass-es.

Complete the theme

Some weddings follow a particular theme from start to finish, and wedding favors should stick with that theme. Couples who will showcase their love of travel on their wedding days may want to give guests keychains or purse holders that feature popular landmarks around the world. Those who are admitted beach bums may want to present a small fish-bowl with sand and a gold-fish inside, reminiscent of days at the seashore.

Go traditional

Couples who opt for universally appealing favors can lean toward some popular options, such as silver cake servers, candlestick holders, decorative photo frames, or engraved keepsake boxes. Aim for favors that have utility. Otherwise, favors may end up collecting dust on someone’s shelf.

Food and beverage gifts are fun

Food favors mean guests can enjoy their gifts and not have to worry about finding space inside their homes to display trinkets. Food favors can be lavishly decorated cookies, fine chocolates, petit fours, small bottles of champagne or cup-cakes decorated like the wedding cake.

Favors are often integral to wedding celebrations. Selecting a favor that will be appreciated and fit with the wedding is often a fun and stress-free part of planning a wedding.

Late January is a quiet time for the gardener. This is the time of year I like to get out my maps (rough drafts to be sure) of last year’s gardens and beds and review and refi ne any changes I’ll want to make. The non-hardy bulbs and tubers that I have stored for spring planting are due for their mid-winter inspection. I like to remove them from their shoe box storage containers and inspect them for any prob-lems. Around this time I like to pot up some of my ‘Iron Cross” Oxalis and get them started under lights. There is no real reason to do this other than the good feeling I get watching them sprout and grow.

My cats have again decided that they don’t really enjoy the snowy, cold weather so I’ll grow some ryegrass from seed for them to munch on to supplement their diet. They seem to enjoy it and they are less tempted to snack on the houseplants if the grass is available.

During late January and early February, I like to spend some time repotting any houseplants that look like they need it. My hanging jade is a prime candidate for this. It did great over summer in its 8” pot but now the soil has shrunk away from the pot letting me know that it’s a bit overdue for repotting. I’ll only want to jump it up to a 10” pot. Since the hanging jade is a succulent, I’ll use cactus soil with a little regular potting soil added. It has also gotten a little straggly in appearance. It hangs down about 4’ from the rim of the pot but is looking a little sparse. To promote some fi lling in, I’ll remove about 2’ from each tendril to promote new growth further back along the stems. Rather than discarding the cut shoots, I’ll root them into some other pots. Spring or summer would be a better time for this proj-ect since they’ll root slowly in the middle of the winter but, since I have my grow lights fi red up anyway I’m sure they’ll eventually take off. On closer inspection of the cut off tendrils, I notice that there are little gray nubs along the stems. These nubs represent latent roots that will develop once they come into contact with soil. I want to get as many rooted cuttings as possible to share so, instead of rooting the entire tendril, I’ll chop it into small sections with a pair of scissors. Each section will include at least one pair of leaves. I’ll let the cuttings dry out and “scab over” for a couple of days. This lessens the chance of the cutting rotting before they grow roots. After they’ve scabbed over, I’ll nestle the cuttings into the soil leaving just the leaves exposed. I like to put several cuttings into a 6” diameter pot. A thorough watering will wash the soil into contact with the latent root nubs. The only thing left to do is wait.

Since the hanging jade is a succulent, I won’t need to water the cuttings for at least a couple of weeks after the initial soaking. Within a few weeks, I should see some tiny leaves starting to form at the base of the two leaves that were left ex-posed. By spring, they’ll be well rooted and ready to be given away to a home with lots of bright sun.

This rooting procedure will work for most hanging plants that grow leaves all along their stems like Swedish Ivy or Wandering Jew. Non succulents will not need to scab over for more than a couple of hours. Dipping those cutting into a rooting powder before planting will aid in the quick formation of roots. Many folks like to root their cuttings in water, then transplant them into soil. The roots that a plant grows in water are very different than those that form in soil. It’s quicker and more reliable to root directly into soil. Thanks for the read.

If you want to learn more about volunteering, contact Brigette Callahan at 862-1250 x15, or by email at [email protected].
