Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Even though winter has just begun, we’ve had a couple of large snowstorms. Snow-drifts

are the main feature of our winter landscape. Since our prevailing wind comes from the

same direction winter and summer, snow-drifts can teach you a lot about the micro-climates

found in your yard. Remembering that drifts form in areas of calm, take a look around your

yard. The largest drifts will form in the most sheltered spots. You will probably notice that

the largest drifts form on the east and southeast sides of your house; the side facing away

from the prevailing west and northwest winds. The drifts on the east side of my house can

get quite high (7’ during the “Blizzard of ‘93) while on the west side, no drifts form at all.

You’ll also be able to observe the windbreak effect of other features in your yard. Some

areas may be blown clear by higher wind velocities caused by the channeling effect of landscape

features. For instance, the northeast corner of my house gets blown clear of snow because of the

increased wind velocity caused by the wind “piling-up” as it tries to round that corner of the house.

Your knowledge of these various exposures to wind within your yard should have an

influence on decisions you make during the planting season. You’ll want to take into account

the effects of the prevailing wind as you decide on placement of flowerbeds to take advantage

of wind drift of fragrance. You will be able to avoid problems caused by planting tender plants

(such as rose bushes) in spots that are very windy. Taking wind conditions into account is quite

important when considering placement of outdoor living features like decks, cooking areas,

swimming pools and fences. There’s no time like now to observe the wind flow through your

yard...besides, it’ll give you something to do while you’re out there shoveling your walk.

The main garden feature in winter is the weather. Forecasters always have their hands

full trying (and generally failing) to predict the track of storm after storm. Although these

storms are dangerous and cause great inconvenience, there are some positive aspects to snowy

weather. The term “blanket of snow” is very appropriate. The “blanket’ of snow acts as an

insulating barrier much like the fiberglass insulation that you hopefully have in the attic of your

home. The layer of snow prevents warmth from the earth from radiating into the atmosphere.

This means that the frost level will not penetrate more that a couple of feet deep. This is good

news for all our shrubs and trees, especially those that were planted only last season and are

not completely established. Another benefit of our “blanket” of snow is the insulative effect

it provides for our perennials. In years of “snow drought” the exposed crowns of our beloved

perennial flowers are exposed to the cold, drying winds of the depths of winter. The snow

will shelter and protect our perennials, lessening the chances of winterkill. If you have beds

that the wind has blown bare, consider shoveling snow onto those areas to re-blanket them.

With the holidays past, I found no shortage of evergreen material to scavenge together to

cover my perennial beds with. The abandoned Christmas trees I gathered from friends and

neighbors provide a perfect mulching material. I don’t like to cover my beds until the ground

freezes. I don’t cover the beds too deeply with evergreen boughs; just enough to shade the

soil and provide protection from drying winter winds. I’m not covering my beds to keep them

from freezing. On the contrary, I’m covering them to keep the soil frozen during any “false

spring” weather in February or March. Our hardy perennials are capable of withstanding

freezing. What CAN damage them is repeated thawing and re-freezing. My layer of

evergreen boughs shades the soil so the beds won’t thaw too early in spring. If this winter

provides enough snow to keep the ground covered, my layer of mulch won’t be needed since

the snow will protect my beds. I’ve learned not to trust the weather and if the winter continues

to be lacking in decent snow cover, I’ll be glad I’ve got them covered up. Thanks for the read.

I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Sanctuary Trio

This very talkative fellow was wounded in the leg and wandering around Fort Edward in the cold. We had him brought in to the vet so we could get his wound treated and get him neutered and here he is. What a LOVER and with so much to say about the world.

If you have a space in your heart and your home PLEASE come and give him a home for Christmas.

These little guys are listed as Chihuahua- Terrier mixes but may have some Shepherd as well. They are about 9 weeks old and have been vet check,

wormed and had their fist set of shots. These 3 babies have GREAT disposi-tions and will make excellent companions for anyone.

Trudie is a beautiful little sheltie/golden mix mama. She was turned in to a high kill shelter when her owners found out she was pregnant. She gave birth to 10

(WOW!) pups while at the shelter and we were able to get her into rescue as soon as we could. Trudie is about 2 years old, has

all her shots, wormed, heartworm negative

Trudie

and vet checked. She is a darling and weighs about 25 lbs. As for Trudie’s 10 puppies, we do not know who the father is but Trudie is a gem. The babies are

about 4-5 weeks old now and will be ready to go home in a few weeks. They have been vet checked and will be given shots when they are old enough.

SARATOGA SPRINGS HS DRAMA CLUB PRESENTS “CALVIN BERGER”

SARATOGA – Saratoga Springs High School Drama Club pres-ents the musical Calvin Berger by Barry Wyner, on Friday, January 9 at 7:30pm and Saturday, January 10 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm. The timeless story of Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the most famous romances of all time. Where better to set this story of unrequited feelings, love notes, and physical insecurity than a high school? Calvin Berger is directed by Leigh Berenis, with music direction by Kathleen McCarty, and features a cast, crew and orchestra of 25-30 students. In ad-dition to the directors, other adults fi lling key roles are Bob Berenis, Scott Walrath and Lisa Shields. The production is presented through special arrangement with Tams Witmark, Calvin Berger will be presented in the high school’s Meade Teaching Auditorium. Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for students and will go on sale December 15. Calvin Berger is recommended for PG-13 audiences.

FIVE QUICK WAYS TO UPGRADE YOUR HOME FOR RESALE

(NAPSI)—Whether you’re considering cashing in on your equity, downsizing, trading up, moving for a change of scenery or relocating for better prospects, a few smart investments and improvements can help your home stand out from the competition so you get top dol-lar. Even if you’re not planning on moving anytime soon, these strategies can maximize your home’s value and increase its marketability:

• Sprucing up the exterior. If you think you’ll have a few years before you move, work on your landscaping now to give plants time to mature. Look for easy-care perennials such as hostas, which multiply on their own. If you have less time, you can still achieve a quick makeover by power washing paths and siding, painting or upgrading your front door and keeping the lawn watered and weeded.

• Removing eyesores inside. Some minor adjustments can help buyers recognize what’s great about your home. Swap outdated fi xtures, remove wallpaper and give everything a deep clean. Replacements don’t have to be top of the line; they just need to eliminate hang-ups for potential buyers.

• Improving the kitchen—to a point. You probably won’t re-coup the cost of a full kitchen renovation but smaller projects such as upgrading appliances and painting or refi nishing cabinets can modernize the space.

• Refreshing rooms with neutral paint. This is a time-honored tip for a reason. While seeing your favorite bold hues on the walls makes you happy, potential buyers may not agree. A fresh coat of neutral paint can help them envision their own belongings in the space.• Focusing on energy ef-fi ciency. The right energy-smart upgrades can assure buyers they’re seeing an effi cient home where util-ity bills can be minimized. Adding insulation to the attic and walls can make a dramatic improvement in many homes. Consider the windows as well. Adding a heat-rejecting window fi lm such as 3M Sun Control Win-dow Film can reduce cooling costs and typically does not change the windows’ ap-pearance. Since the window fi lm can reject up to 99 per-cent of UV rays, it can protect the investment you made in your hardwood fl oors, rugs, window treatments, furni-ture and artwork.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU: RECHARGE YOUR CAREER

(NAPS)—According to some career experts, the holiday sea-son or any quiet time at work is a good time to plan, organize, refl ect on where you are in your career and where you would like to go.

“In overly hectic lives, career planning often gets moved to the back burner,” said Michael Bevis, director of Academic Aff airs for University of Phoenix and faculty member for the

School of Busi-ness. “Many Amer-icans feel unsatis-fi ed and stagnant in their careers, and the only way to take action is to devote time to making a plan for change. This does not necessar-ily mean a career change, but often

an adjustment in the way you approach your existing career.”

According to Bevis, job complacency should not be ignored because career satisfaction plays a major role in overall satis-faction. In fact, a national University of Phoenix survey con-ducted by Harris Poll found that nearly half of working adults in the U.S. gain equal or greater feelings of self-worth from their jobs and careers as they do from their personal lives, and 45 percent are still searching for the right career. Another survey from the University shows that nearly two-thirds of all working adults say they currently have limited opportunities within their companies, but 53 percent acknowledge they should take charge by being more entrepreneurial in their careers.

Bevis agrees. “Being entrepreneurial means approaching your existing career with purpose, not relying on your em-

ployer to manage your career,” he said. “Setting career goals, developing a strong personal brand and constantly looking for ways to grow and tie your responsibilities to the com-pany’s bottom line can help you succeed and feel more en-gaged in your career.”

Bevis says taking charge of your career takes planning. He suggests you use downtime to:

1. Learn as much as possible about your organization, in-dustry, and career growth opportunities.

2. Develop a strategic business plan to grow and improve your personal brand within your organization.

3. Keep your personal brand current and sustainable by knowing how your skills and experience fi t into the big pic-ture of your organization.

4. Network with individuals who have diverse experiences.

5. Identify and engage with a mentor. This individual does not necessarily have to be in your own company. Find some-one who you admire professionally and whose success mir-rors your goals.

6. Identify and engage with a sponsor in your own compa-ny. This person can champion your success and advocate for your growth within the company.

7. Research options for continued learning. Take a class, pur-sue an advanced degree or research certifi cate and continu-ing education programs. With educational options growing more customized every day, it is easier than ever to fi nd ways to learn, grow and challenge yourself long after you graduate high school or earn a bachelor’s degree.

“Business education encourages students to think outside the box and be more entrepreneurial in their careers,” adds Bevis. “Employees at every level who approach their career as if they were entrepreneurs, with purpose and measurable goals, are often the happiest and most successful.”

For more information about the survey, visit phoenix.edu/news.

A less hectic time at work may be your opportunity to take charge of your career.

GOOD MOVES FOR BAD WEATHER

DRIVING(NAPS)—You can keep your vehicle on the road to safety even on rough roads and in cold, wet weather if you heed a few hints:

First, Prevent Problems

• To help you see your way clear to safer driving, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) Mopar brand off ers a heated windshield washer solvent kit that helps eliminate visual distractions such as ice, snow and frost. It activates shortly after vehicle start-up and in-cludes all applicable wiring and equipment.

• Always enjoy a warm and warmed-up car. A fully inte-grated, OEM-tested Remote Start system from Mopar will start your car from as far away as 300 feet with just the push of a button.

• All-Weather Slush Mats feature molded, deep ribs to protect your car’s carpet and keep it clean, safe and dry by trapping and holding water, snow and mud.

• Don’t let your skis and snowboards fall. Rack them securely on the Mopar Ski

and Snowboard Rack. It even has an oversized push but-ton for easy opening with your gloves on.

• Be sure your tires are in good shape and right for the roads you travel on. For-tunately, you can fi nd hun-dreds of tires at competitive prices at FCA dealerships.

Next, Protect Your Finances

If Problems Do Occur

Making that easier are Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP) Road Hazard Tire & Wheel Plans, which off er extra cov-erage in the event of pot-hole, curb and other road hazard damage.

Available exclusively through FCA dealerships, you can

cover tires and wheels for as many as seven years. You get full repair or replacement costs, including the cost of mounting, balancing and stems—up to $1,500 a year for all four tires and wheels, even aftermarket wheels.

The plan even provides $100 “Sign-And-Go” towing and roadside assistance, all with a $0 deductible per repair visit.

A Customer Convenience Package provides additional coverage, including:

• $35 First Day Rental (or taxi reimbursement)

• $35 a Day Car Rental Al-lowance (or taxi reimburse-ment)

• $1,000 Trip Interruption

Coverage.

Mopar is a simple contrac-tion of the words “motor” and “parts,” and is the source for genuine parts and acces-sories for Fiat Chrysler Auto-mobiles brands. Mopar parts are engineered by the same teams that create factory-authorized vehicle specifi ca-tions for FCA vehicles.
