How To Go Green When Holiday ShoppingThe color green is synonymous with the holiday season. But as holiday revelers deck their halls with green this season, they also can go green when shopping for loved ones.

Many shoppers are concerned by their carbon footprints. In an effort to embrace a more eco-friendly lifestyle, such shoppers may look for ways to continue their holiday traditions, but do so

in a way that’s more considerate of the environment. Though the holiday season is often associated with excess, holiday shoppers can still fi nd eco-friendly ways to put smiles on their loved ones’ faces this year.

* Purchase energy effi cient products. The holiday season is a great time of year to fi nd deals on major appliances, which may be on sale to make room for next year’s models. When shopping for appliances this holiday season, shoppers should look for energy effi cient products that consume less energy without sacrifi cing performance. Since the institution of its ENERGY STAR(R) program in 1992, the U.S. Envi-ronmental Protection Agency has helped consumers invest in energy-effi cient products that helped reduce air pollution and energy consumption. The program has since expanded into Canada as well. When purchasing appliances this holi-day season, shoppers should look for ENERGY STAR quali-fi ed products, which can protect the environment and also save consumers money on utility bills.

* Plan shopping trips in advance. The holiday season can be hectic, and as a result many holiday shoppers fi nd them-

selves getting their holiday shopping done as time allows. But breaking up holiday shopping into several trips can increase fuel consumption and lead to more time spent in traffi c, where vehicle emissions can contribute to air pollution. Instead of getting your shopping done on several quick

trips, plan a holiday shopping trip in advance, setting aside enough time to get as much shopping done as possible in a single trip. This can cut back on some of the stress of holiday shopping and benefi t the environment at the same time.

* Set up a holiday shopping carpool. Many people carpool to and from work, and such a system can be employed when holiday shopping as well. Plan a shopping trip to the mall with neighbors or

friends to cut back on your fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Sedan or coupe owners may want to limit their carpools to two people so there’s enough room in the car for gifts on the way home, while minivan or SUV owners should still have ample room for multiple passengers and their presents. Remove unnecessary cargo from the trunk or other storage areas before beginning your trip.

* Create your own gifts. Worried about purchasing products with excessive packaging? Then try your hand at creating gifts instead of giving overpackaged store-bought items. Homemade gifts may be more well-received than another necktie or pair of slippers, and such gifts don’t have to be packaged at all.

* Buy local. When shopping for the holiday, look for locally-produced products, whether it’s arts and crafts produced at a nearby store or organic foods purchased from a local farmer’s market. Locally produced products don’t need to be shipped to make it onto the shelves at local stores, making such products far more eco-friendly than mass-produced products shipped from factories far away.

The holidays may not seem like an eco-friendly time of year, but shoppers can take steps to re-duce their carbon footprints when shopping this holiday season.

Shoppers can coordinate their holiday shopping trips, carpooling to the mall in an effort to be more eco-friendly.

Did You Know?According to the American Bankers Association, many merchants view debit card purchases in the same light that they do purchases made with cash or personal checks. That’s an important dis-tinction for holiday shoppers to consider before making purchases, as any items bought on their debit cards may only be worthy of store credit instead of a full refund should such items need to be returned. Shoppers buying gifts for friends and family members should understand that, even if they remember to include gift receipts when wrapping gifts, those items may only be eligible for store credit if purchased with a debit card. When buying items with credit cards, consumers can withhold payment if they are not satisfi ed with the product. No such option exists when us-ing debit cards. In addition to more restrictive return policies, shoppers who use debit cards may incur debit transaction fees, This means they are charged each time they use their debit cards, or such fees may be triggered when users use their card too often. Debit card users can check the agreement signed when they opened their accounts to determine if they will be subjected to debit transaction fees. Holidays shoppers whose purchases are subject to such fees may want to avoid using their debit cards during the holiday season.

Great Christmas Ideas for All!Did You Know?

According to the American Bankers Association, many merchants view debit card purchases in the same light that they do purchases made with cash or personal checks. Debit card users can check the agreement signed when they opened their accounts to determine if they will be subjected to debit transaction fees. Holidays shoppers whose purchases are subject to such fees may want to avoid using their debit cards during the holiday season.

Frugal Gift Wrapping IdeasHoliday shoppers spend billions of dollars each year on gifts for friends, family and coworkers. But holiday shoppers also spend substantial amounts of money dressing up those gifts with bows and wrapping paper. Shoppers may not want to spend much more on wrapping paper, bags and other ways to dress-up their gifts, and by employing a few tricks of the gift wrapping trade, they

may not have to. The following are some frugal, yet fl ashy, ways to wrap presents this holiday season.

* Children’s artwork: Over the course of a school year parents can accumulate dozens of origi-nal pieces of art from their children’s time in the classroom. Instead of relegating those pictures to a memory box or temporary glory on the refrigerator, turn them into unique gift wrap. Pair these pieces of art with colored ribbon, and everyone who gets a unique masterpiece will feel special.

* Newspaper: Recycle newsprint and comics into wrapping paper. Encourage everyone to wrap in

newspaper for a cohesive look come Christmas morning.

* Cloth: Leftover cloth from Halloween or cloth purchased to create homemade curtains can be turned into giftwrap for awkward-shaped gifts. Use decorative ribbon to seal the bundle shut.

* Brown paper: Brown paper tied with twine or ribbon is inexpensive and can easily be recycled after use. Use a marker to put the names of gift recipients on each pack-age to save on gift tags as well.

* Glass jars: Use mason jars when wrapping smaller gifts, including gift cards, to give them an arts-and-crafts feel.

* Fabric gift bags: If you’re handy with a needle and thread, sew sacks out of left-over fabric to make gift bags of various sizes.

* Cookie tins: Find unique cookie tins from yard sales or leftover tins from holi-days past and use them as gift boxes.

* Recipes: If you will be giving a cookbook or food-themed gifts, print recipes

that can be used as gift wrap and then later used to make certain dishes.

* Baby linens: From blankets to wash cloths, use baby linens to wrap infant-themed gifts for new parents.

* Baskets: Wicker baskets are available in various shapes and sizes. They can be used to make a gift collection and then reused over and over again.

There are many creative and inexpensive ways to wrap gifts this year instead of relying on pre-printed and often expensive wrapping paper.

Baskets are an often inexpensive alternative to wrapping paper.

Gizmo

KikiKiki is a shih Tzu, 6 yrs old and fully vetted.

Kiki is a friendly little sweetheart.

If your looking for an older, smaller dog then we have GIZMO for you. He is a 7yr old Shih Tzu. Ready to be your lap dog.

Gizmo is housebroken and we are told a real smart little fellow.

This is little Miss Penny and here is her story. She is a little Min Pin about 8 lbs, 12 months old. She is up to date on vac-

cines and microchipped. She is the cutest, sweetest love bug and needs a family to call her own. This older couple picked her out from a breeder and could not afford any veterinary care. One day she ran out, got

hit by a car and her leg was broken in two places. They could not afford to have it fixed so it healed slightly off kilter. Miraculously

she jumps, plays, runs and you would never know that this happened to her except

occasionally she holds the back leg up. We are all not perfect and this should not stop anyone from giving this cutie pie a furever home. She is the perfect lap dog and she is housebroken and crate trained. Please call the shelter for more info at 518-654-6220 or

come by to meet her.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County

A Community Opportunity To Support Saratoga County Veterans

Our military veterans make great sacrifices which al-low us to live in a free and open society, to choose the home of our dreams, drive the car we want, and build a life and career surrounded by family and friends. The USA is a special country, and our little piece of real estate here in Saratoga County became special in 1777 due to the events on a nearby battlefield. Whereas soldiers once traversed our landscape lining up for action against the enemy, today we live far, far away from any fighting, thanks to more than two cen-turies of sacrifice by our fighting men and women. Still, we are surrounded by Air, Army, Navy, and National Guard bases, laboratories, and other sites. C-130s fly overhead daily, providing a constant reminder of those who keep vigil over us.With this strong connection to the military, communities find many ways to honor and serve those who put their lives on the line, each a measure of their gratitude and appreciation. The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, working with the Saratoga County Veterans Service Agency, several local radio stations and pub-lications including the Pennysaver, is conducting a drive to raise money for the Saratoga County Veterans’ Trust and Agency Fund. The effort began on Veter-ans’ Day (Nov. 11) and runs through Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7). Your contribution

will help provide job training, education, health care and housing for veterans who need assistance.Donations are suggested in the following contribution lev-els, each given a military title related to the 1777 Battle of Saratoga: Fife and Drum, $5.00; Enlisted Soldier, $10.00; Officer, $25.00; Senior Officer $50.00; Col. Kosciuszko, $100.00; General Lincoln, $250.00; General Schuyler $500.00; General Gates $1000.00. Please mail all dona-tions to the Saratoga County Veterans Trust and Agency Fund, c/o Saratoga County Treasurer, 40 McMaster St., Ballston Spa, NY 12020.

Adopt A Pet...Pets of the WeekAdopt A Pet...Pets of the WeekDaisy Daisy is an extremely sweet black

and white 1-year old female, who is soft as a bunny. She is very af-fectionate but still a bit shy. She wants to be held and cuddled but

she’s not sure who is safe just yet. Daisy is a purring machine

and very playful! She loves catnip mice and likes hiding in a cat

tunnel. She’s very good at using the scratching post and hasn’t scratched any furniture. Daisy gets along well with other cats

Patches

and has lived with a large dog. She’s a sweet girl who would make a great addition to any family! Janice tolerates being held and

seems like a rather self-sufficient little girl! She is big into toys and loves to play. When Janice is feeling stressed, she can swipe

out with her paw or growl, which is why we feel a calm, adult-only home would be best for her.

Patches LOVES to be petted and is a very affectionate, cool cat. Some

of these pictures don’t do him justice at all: he’s a big-headed, beautiful boy. Super playful, he likes to toss his toys and play! Patches favors the lady-critters, he’s not so keen on male cats or dogs. He was found

living outdoors but at 6 years old, has transitioned fine into an indoor cat. If you’re looking for a loyal and sweet companion who will be the king of

your castle then Patches is your guy! For a meet & greet with either of these wonderful cats, please call H.O.P.E. at 518.428.2994. Visit us online @ www.hopeanimalrescue.org to view profiles of more adoptable dogs and cats, check our events calendar and find more

The days continue to shrink as we move toward the solstice and it’s attendant holidays

(Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.). At this time of year, we decorate our domiciles for the upcom-

ing festivities surrounding the holidays. Featured are our holiday plants. Everywhere we

turn we’ll see Evergreen trees, Mistletoe, Holly & Ivy, Christmas Cacti and Poinsettias. Why

are they involved in our modern holiday celebrations?

Their backgrounds are varied and quite interesting. Some were adopted by Chris-

tianity from “pagan” cultures that existed in an area before Christianity arrived there. Others

never were adopted into Christian lore, but have managed to make their appearance on their

own, through folklore and traditions that include their use in celebrations on or near the sol-

stice.

Take mistletoe for instance. Not only did the church never sanction the use of

mistletoe in celebration; its use was actually banned at one time. This is, no doubt, due to the

fact that it was highly revered by the ‘pagan’ Druid priests, and was central to their ancient

solstice celebrations along with its host, the oak tree. During the Druid’s solstice celebration,

a Druid priest would cut the parasitic mistletoe from the branch of an oak tree and distribute

pieces of it to the gathered populace. While doing this, he was careful not to let it touch the

earth. Part of the mystery of mistletoe to the Druids was that it grew, not from soil, but from

the bark of the oak tree. To receive a sprig of mistletoe from the priest was a blessing Druids

looked forward to as part of their solstice rituals.

Today, all we know about mistletoe is that we are entitled to kiss anyone who

stands beneath it. That tradition has its roots in Scandinavian myth. Loki, a troublesome

little god, shot Balder, another young god, with an arrow made of mistletoe, the only thing

that could harm this favorite son of Freyja. The tears of sorrow Freyja shed became the white

berries of the mistletoe. All the Norse gods worked together to restore Balder to life and, in

gratitude, Freyja is said to bestow a kiss on anyone who passes beneath mistletoe.

The origin of the use of Holly as a holiday decoration is a bit more obscure. It was

long believed that “witches” and “evil spirits” had an aversion to holly, so it is likely that

it’s use began as a protector of the home during important times of the year like the solstice.

There is an ancient Christmas carol that tells of Holly and Ivy vying for the place of honor as

a holiday trim. Holly is eventually chosen because of its red berries. There is also a legend

that says that the crown of thorns worn by Christ was made of Holly. Until then, the berries

of holly were white, but turned red like the drops of Christ’s blood. Thanks for the read.

Recently Retired And Looking for Meaningful Volunteer Work?SARATOGA REGION - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are a recently retired woman looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

Stars for Our TroopsCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Vet-erans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage.
