The market is once again con-veniently located in Wiswall Park, at the corner of Front Street and Low Street in the Village of Ballston Spa. WONDERFUL HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL ANIMALS
CAPITAL DISTRICT – Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the cap-ital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treated like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surrender. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adoption clinics held three times each month.
NYSERDA PROVIDES FREE ENERGY ASSESSMENTS FOR
SMALL BUSINESSES AND NOT-FOR-PROFITSCAPITAL REGION – NYSERDA offers no-cost energy assess-ments throughout New York State. A team of energy efficien-cy experts identify cost-effective, energy-saving opportuni-ties (e.g. lighting, heating equipment, motors, thermostats, insulation) to help your organization make informed deci-sions. Assessments identify improvements that can yield substantial annual energy savings, as well as available incen-tives and low-interest loan opportunities to reduce the cost of implementing the energy-saving improvements. Organi-zations with 10 full-time equivalent employees or fewer are eligible for this free program. Contact L&S Energy Services, the regional program contractor, at 518-383-9405 x223 or [email protected].
SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM OFFERS FREE LUNCH
BALLSTON SPA – The members of The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa and Ballston Spa United Methodist Church are actively preparing for their 2015 Summer Lunch Program. This program is designed to provide free lunches to children of families in need. This program has served the local Village of Ballston Spa for the past four years. With the help of gen-erous grants from Stewarts, Adirondack Trust Co., and dona-tions from local businesses and organizations we are able to continue this program into its fourth year. Approximately140 lunches are served Monday thru Friday, July and August. Nu-tritious and freshly bagged meals are prepared by church members and local volunteers and given to each child in at-tendance that might otherwise go hungry. Any assistance is welcome and the program is seeking volunteers. Volunteers can sign up through The First Baptist Church, 885-8361 or on the church website, bspabaptist.org. Permission forms are required for children to participate in the program. These forms are available at the church or on the church website. Feel free to contact coordinators Karen Jones or Pat Rogers at 518-885-8361 for more information.

Friendly visit-ing, respite, “handy helping”, housekeeping, are ways you can benefit from services. Call 399-3262 to find out how a dependable caring person can make your life easier.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joy-ful Noise was a contempo-rary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young peo-ple, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will cul-minate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forev-er impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us dur-ing our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

This is a great time of year for gardeners. In spite of the sluggish start, recent warmth has our gardens leaping to life . There are home grown flowers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial flowers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual flowers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the flowerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the. All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. Later, this show will include althea, The Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double flowering, I greatly admire the single flowering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single flowering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on. Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump. If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

MENTORS NEEDED FOR LOCAL
NON-PROFITCAPITAL REGION – Spring is coming and with it a time to renew, re-group, and re-prioritize. What better way than to begin a new volun-teer opportunity! I am I can, a mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, is seek-ing professional women to work with new students to the program. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your stu-dent on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides support and guid-ance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school dis-tricts. AMERICANS WILLING TO DRIVE
FARTHEST FOR LOVE AND FAMILY
(StatePoint) Summer travel season is upon us and a new survey reveals just where all those vehicles on the high-way may be headed. Ameri-cans indicated they are will-ing to drive the farthest for love and family, with fewer willing to drive long distanc-
es for sporting and enter-tainment events.
In particular, 42 percent sur-veyed indicated they would drive the farthest to see a love interest over any other activity and 25 percent in-dicated they would do so to attend a wedding, according to the new “How Far Would You Drive?” survey from En-terprise Rent-A-Car.
Additionally, 20 percent said
they are willing to drive five or more hours to see their child’s sporting event, while only nine percent are willing to drive that same distance to see their favorite profes-sional football team play.
More than one-third also in-dicated they would drive five or more hours to attend a family reunion and a quarter said they would even do so to meet their in-laws.
“We hear anecdotal stories from our customers all the time about what inspires them to embark on road trips, and it’s a thrill to see how we play a role in our customers’ lives,” said Lee Broughton, vice president, Enterprise Rent-A-Car Brand Marketing. “While love and family may spark individu-als to drive the farthest, in-terests such as sports, music and food still earn significant car time.”

NINE TIPS TO HELP YOU MAKE A
SMOOTH MOVE(NAPS)—Millions of Ameri-cans move to a new home every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money if you heed a few hints on driving a moving truck. These come from the experts at Penske Truck Rental:
1. Give yourself plenty of time. Chances are, the trip will take longer than the GPS predicts. Be aware of when rush hour is likely to be in communities you’ll drive through.
2. Sit awhile before you drive. Don’t take off until you’ve familiarized yourself with all the truck’s switches and gauges. Make sure the mirrors are properly adjust-ed.
3. Watch out for blind spots. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administra-
tion points out that trucks have oversized blind spots known as the “No-Zone.” Bear these in mind, espe-cially when changing lanes or coming to a stop.
4. The things you carry. Truck rental agreements generally include language from the U.S. Department of Transportation prohibiting the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dan-gerous articles.” That means don’t pack such flammable items as paint, chemicals, cleaning materials, solvents, propane, gasoline and so on. Your rental agent can help you tell whether something you want to bring along is al-lowed.
5. Be smart about size. “Trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car,” explained Don Mikes, senior vice president–rental, Pen-ske Truck Leasing. They also take longer to stop. Ease off of the accelerator early when approaching a stop. This also helps keep your cargo from shifting.
6. Protect your property. “Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under exist-ing policies,” Mikes added. If your insurance company is among them, consider sign-ing up for additional cover-age options to protect your-
self and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing that his company offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.
7. Look for a sign. Pay at-tention to road signs per-taining to trucks such as weigh station stops, truck or lane restriction signs and overhead clearance post-ings.
8. Park smart. Set the emergency brake every time.
9. Learn more. You can find further useful moving facts and tips at www.PenskeT-ruckRental.com.
