About UsThe International Telemedicine Network (ITN) offers continuing medical education programs and patient consultations using information and communications technology (ICT). Among the tools used by the ITN are electronic libraries, digital video lectures, live seminars, and discussions. The ITN partnership offers the consortium members’ collective medical expertise and international connections, as well as ICT expertise from highly experienced telemedicine providers. The ITN also offers rapid response programs for epidemics and medical emergencies.
Using telemedicine and other eHealth solutions is an efficient, effective, and environmentally friendly way to deliver information. The ITN consortium can conduct hundreds of “face-to-face” lectures and seminars between doctors separated by thousands of miles. Wherever possible, the ITN coordinates its efforts with local suppliers and community-based health organizations in host countries.
Information gateways, designed for each host country, provide a smooth venue for exchanging information and staying current. The programs have similarities and overlap, yet each country has its own version of the ITN system, tailored to the special needs of the area. A thorough assessment of each country’s healthcare needs precedes the gateway design. The ITN identifies needs, supplies content, coordinates participant activities, and follows through with CME programs for participating countries.
The ITN system has many advantages:On-the-ground organization. The ITN organizes administration, ICT facilities, and operational resources in host countries to
ensure a successful delivery of medical content. Continuous monitoring guarantees program success.
Coordination. The ITN offers a single point of contact for its educational programs. Planning, content, delivery, and assessment are integrated into a seamless operation.
Pooled expertise. ITN member institutions collectively have hundreds of years of experience in medical education, research, telemedicine, and ICT.
Urgent response. The consortium can provide rapid responses to emergencies, epidemics, and other urgent requests. Redundant capacity (in content and delivery) allows fast, coordinated responses.
Back-up resources. Content providers back up each other at times of increased demand.
A cholera epidemic in Kirkuk, Iraq illustrates the consortium partners’ potential for a coordinated, efficient response to emergencies: Within a half-hour of being contacted by the U.S. Department of State's Kirkuk Provincial Reconstruction
Team advising of the situation, WiRED and its partners enlisted the help of an international team of cholera experts from Dhaka Bangladesh, our consortium partner, ICDDR,B. This made it possible to quickly set up a telemedicine training and follow-up videoconference for doctors in Kirkuk, likely slowing the spread of the epidemic.

WiRED has set up nearly 100 health information centers in 12 countries on four
continents. Providing equipment, coordination, and contacts, we offer vital medical
information to communities coping with the challenges of war, poverty, and dislocation.
Within a single day, WiRED can convert an empty room into a technology hub with
global reach – some places so remote we must use solar panels to power the
equipment we provide.
For example, Arriving on the heels of the first American troops in Iraq in 2003, WiRED
techs installed e-libraries almost overnight. Information-starved physicians flocked to
these centers, eager to enhance their medical knowledge to save lives. Since then,
WiRED has installed 39 centers in Iraq.
But WiRED does much more than deliver information. Through high-tech telemedicine
connections, we help provide long-distance bonds – linking the world's neediest doctors
with the world's best trained and equipped medical professionals. Together, they talk
medicine, discuss cases, and create solutions.
To help meet goals like these, WiRED coordinated formation of the International
Telemedicine Network (ITN), a consortium of 13 leading research centers, medical
schools, technology nonprofits, and global non-governmental organizations. The ITN
delivers continuing medical education programs and patient consultations using IT tools
such as electronic libraries, digital video lectures, and live seminars.
At the grassroots level, WiRED uses innovative approaches to reach people. More than a million Kenyans have seen and heard HIV/AIDS prevention messages in remote locations thanks to WiRED.

Teammates for ChangeWhen seven year-olds at Belle Haven Elementary in San Mateo County dreamt up their perfect new playground, they had no idea that San Francisco 49ers and hundreds of other corporate volunteers would help make their dream into a reality.
During United Way’s 18th annual Week of Caring, volunteers, including San Francisco 49er wide receivers Josh Morgan, Jason Hill and Dominique Zeigler, rolled up their sleeves and finished installing the new equipment that the school’s second graders had hand selected. “Things like this, I didn’t have growing up. I didn’t have a playground to play on,” Jason Morgan said. “All we had was concrete and the streets. So, giving kids an opportunity to do something better with their lives – that’s always important to me.”
The Week of Caring project capped off an effort to improve academic performance that involved parents, teachers, administrators, other nonprofits and students to attack the root causes of the school’s lagging test scores.
“This new approach has paid off,” said Lorne Needle, VP, Community Impact at United Way. “We are seeing results with test scores and reading scores showing a marked improvement. In many ways this playground was a reward for all of the hard work.”
This year, Week of Caring provided more than 200 Bay Area nonprofits with access to 7,000 corporate volunteers. Many of the nonprofits have been United Way partners for years. Thanks to the volunteers, nonprofits crossed hundreds of critical projects off their ever- growing to-do lists.
Week of Caring is a partnership with the Volunteer Centers of the Bay Area. With generous support from Chevron Corporation, now in their ninth year of sponsorship, it has grown to be the largest corporate volunteer events in the country. This year we partnered with Hands On Bay Area’s Be the Change Day which allowed us to extend even further into the community.

IT STARTED AS A CALL TO ACTION. TO CREATE INSTRUMENTS OF SPEEDFOR ATHLETES AT ALL LEVELS AROUNDTHE GLOBE.
TO FIGHT THE FORCES OF SLOW—WEIGHT, DRAG,FRICTION—WHEREVER THEY WERE FOUND.
THIS YEAR, NIKE CELEBRATES ATHLETES WHO LIVE TO MOVE FASTER.
miler collection.02>
ON THE TRACKZoom Miler• Designed specifically for running sub-4 minute miles• Nike’s lightest track spike—a scant 4.5 ounces• 3/4 plate for a light yet supportive feel• Six removable pins for comfort and traction on the track
ON THE ROADAir Zoom Miler• Caged Zoom Air cushioning offers fast, snap-back energy return while running• External heel counter increases stability• Lightweight, breathable upper
NIKE CELEBRATES 5,280 FEET.For decades the goal was elusive: run 5,280 feet—a mile—in under four minutes. On May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister ran a 3:59.4. Fifty years later, in 1999, Hicham el Guerrouj ran a world record 3:43.13. To date, no one has captured speed like Guerrouj. Which is why Nike harnessed his insights in the making of the world’s fastest miler. After 22 versions, here it is.

DESIGNED TO FIT LIKE A GLOVE. The 1996 gold shoe started a less-is-more approach to sprint spikes. By stripping away anything extraneous, weight was reduced and the aesthetic was streamlined. The Zoom Maxcat is designed to fit like an extension of the foot—albeit an extremely fast one.
ON THE TRACKZoom Maxcat• Nike’s lightest sprint spike• Low-profile “wedge” midsole • Flexible plate with six removable pins • Perforated upper for breathability and support• Integrated forefoot lockdown system
ON THE STREETStreet Maxcat• Sleek track inspired design• Beautiful palette of perforated leathers• Innovative slim line lacing system• Signature webbing loops along laces for snug fit• Unique webbing loops ensure snug, non-slip fit

THEY’RE NOT FLAGS, BUT THEY’RE WORN JUST AS PROUDLY. Athletes competing internationally represent both themselves and their countries. And while Nike sponsors the federations of 27 countries (and counting), it is the individual athletes, wherever they come from, who provide the greatest inspiration. In 2004, Nike salutes both elite and everyday athletes from around the world by delivering a full range of footwear, apparel and equipment in country-specific colors. Now everyone can represent their country—without running a single qualifying heat.
