• Irrigation projects changed agriculture. Concentrated in temporary crops.

• Main culture: manioc, beans, banana and sugar cane.

• 11 cities with GDP less than 50 million.• Services are the major sector of activities.• Income transfer program and retirements

are main source of funds for the territory.

Irecê Territory Demografics• 403 thousand inhabitants, mostly in urban areas. • 20 cities created as spin offs of Morro do Chapéu,

Irecê, Central and Xique-Xique. Population density around 18 inhabitant/km2 an illiteracy rate around 23%.

• Very good sub surface water reservoir and fertile soil. It was known as bean producer.Mamona (castor seed) and corn are importants crops.

• Large number of small land owners, with 66% of the farms less than 10ha.

• Social security are the main source of income. 66% of the population live in families that earn less than ½ minimum wage. 60% of the population receive Bolsa Familia.

• Credit for agriculture is an important policy for the territory.

• Drought is a big problem.

• More than 520 thousand inhabitants, mostly in urban areas. 10 cities created with Campo Alegre isolated.

• Agriculture is the main economic activity.• Juazeiro is the most important city. Most of the citie were created by cattle

movements and navigation in the São Francisco River.• Irrigation projects, after the construction of Sobradinho dam, producing grapes,

mango and sugar cane. • Goat raising is important in the territory. Eletricity generation is also important

now including new wind farms generation.• Cisterns construction has a big impact in the drought mitigate policies.• Income transfer programs important source of economic activity.
