Bandiwords Newsletter July 2015 What is the benefit of talking to a Mate? It is important for us to talk about issues in our life and/or tell our story so we understand that we are not alone and that it is safe to chat. As blokes we quite often isolate ourselves and don’t talk to anyone about our stuff. One of the problems we have is we don’t identify who our true mates are in the good times, which can then lead to isolation and loneliness in bad times. We say, as blokes, that we have three broad categories of mates who we can talk to about our personal stuff. These usually come under the categories of a mentor, a partner or a peer. These mates are more often than not different from the associates and mates that we play sport with and/or socialise with. How many blokes do you know that have no one to talk to? It’s about sharing our story and realising the value of just talking, and in appreciating that there are other men out there experiencing similar things (we are not alone). I have never met a bloke yet who hasn’t wanted to tell his story. Sometimes we just need the right environment. Men are hardwired to be “problem solvers” and we like to work alone. We often have an attitude that if we disclose that we have a few problems, someone will exploit our problem or weakness. It is well known that problems shared are often problems halved. Helping men to overcome isolation (by disclosing issues) helps build resilience and can therefore lower the chances of us becoming completely overwhelmed when difficulties and disappointments head our way. As men we need to encourage help seeking behaviour and be prepared to be the one to “Talk to a Mate” when we know he is down or experiencing difficulties. It isn’t rocket science and it does work. Newsletter July 2015 What is the benefit of talking to a Mate? It is important for us to talk about issues in our life and/or tell our story so we understand that we are not alone and that it is safe to chat. As blokes we quite often isolate ourselves and don’t talk to anyone about our stuff. One of the problems we have is we don’t identify who our true mates are in the good times, which can then lead to isolation and loneliness in bad times. These mates are more often than not different from the associates and mates that we play sport with and/or socialise with. How many blokes do you know that have no one to talk to?

It’s about sharing our story and realising the value of just talking, and in appreciating that there are other men out there experiencing similar things (we are not alone). I

have never met a bloke yet who hasn’t wanted to tell his story. Sometimes we just need the right environment. Men are hardwired to be “problem solvers” and we like to work alone. We often have an attitude that if we disclose that we have a few problems, someone will exploit our problem or weakness. It is well known that problems shared are often problems halved. Donate Life At present there are about 1700 people on waiting lists for organs, some requiring dialysis every day for many hours. Without a viable donated organ, there is a high probability those on the list will not survive. Others are unable to see, for the want of a corneal transplant; some may, without a bone donation, need to have limbs amputated; and young children may become very ill without a replacement human heart valve. Since so few of us die in the right circumstances for organ donation (about 1%), we must encourage as many people as possible to consider becoming donors when the time comes. Did You Ever Notice?

Have you ever noticed that there is a distinct colour at the bottom of each toothpaste pack ? Do you know the meaning of the colours ?

Green : Natural. Blue : Natural + Medicine. Red : Natural + Chemical composition. Black : Pure Chemical.

Maybe we should be more aware of the products that we use daily!

-oOo- Mulrunji's Hearing ...... A preacher said, "Anyone with 'special needs' who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the front by the altar." With that, an Aboriginal man got in line, and when it was his turn, the Preacher asked : "Mulrunji, what do you want me to pray about for you?" Mulrunji replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing."

The preacher put one finger of one hand in Mulrunji's ear, placed his other hand on top of Mulrunji's head, and then prayed and prayed and prayed. He prayed to the 'Almighty' for Mulrunji, and the whole congregation joined in with great enthusiasm. After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, "Mulrunji, how is your hearing now?" Mulrunji answered, "I don't know. It ain't ‘til next week!"

-oOo- I was watching my wife putting some fancy expensive cold cream on her face last night. "Why do you put that stuff on your face anyway?" I asked. "To make myself beautiful." she said, removing the cream with a tissue. "What's the matter... giving up?" I said. I'm in the dog house again. 2

Meet Henry William Henry was born in Poland in 1953. A happy childhood, typical education and technical college were followed by a few years of work as telecom officer. From a very early age, Henrys interest was world in general; its people, their cultures and lives. Exploring the world was on life’s agenda all the time depending on the then limited possibilities to travel and availability of funds. In 1980 on his way to Canada, during a short stop in Austria, just overnight Henry fell in love with the idea of rerouting his trip a bit and seeing Australia first. Canada was put on a back burner and he landed in Adelaide, South Australia. The rest is history. It took Henry about 5 years to go around Australia and appreciate how good this country is. In Adelaide he met Maya, a special lady who shared his love of travel and exploration. In their travels they happened to visit Perth and this time it was a “love at first sight” for both. The move to Perth was inevitable, they wound down their newly started careers in Adelaide and arrived in Perth where they got married and started a new life together. Henry worked as a real estate consultant with Professionals in South Perth while Maya was a teacher in Curtin Uni. Within a short time they had their own Access Realty in Mends St, South Perth. In 2005 they sold the business to fulfil their dream of seeing the world. They travelled extensively. They lived and worked in different places but by 2012 they were ready to come back to their Australian home. Roleystone was an obvious choice to move to with its bush setting, relaxed lifestyle and country feel. They have been enjoying their life in Roleystone ever since. Henry still does some real estate selling. He is also involved in local community interests - mainly garden, bush and land care.

-oOo- Federal Health Policy

It appears Medicos may have weighed in on Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s health care proposals in the 2015 budget. The Allergists voted to scratch it; but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenterologists had a sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve. The Obstetricians felt they were all labouring under a misconception. Ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted. Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" while the Paediatricians said, "Oh, Grow up." The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it. The Surgeons were fed up with the cuts and decided to wash their hands of the whole thing. The Ear Nose and Throat specialists didn't swallow it, and just wouldn't hear of it. The Pharmacists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter...." The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were peed off at the whole idea. The Anaesthetists thought the whole idea was a gas, but the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no. In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the asses in Canberra.

-oOo- Private Property Signs Following discussions with the new site owner & our local Police, it was agreed that appropriate signage should be erected to designate the site as Private Property. This will facilitate the apprehension, arrest & charging of trespassers, , graffitists & vandals. Whilst we would have liked to install the sign above, we were counselled to stay with the conventional format. Members are encouraged to drop in on the site at any hour of the day or night to photograph trespassers & advise them that on site security photos are being forwarded to Armadale Police station. Should you catch ferals in the act of vandalism, you are entitled to enforce a “citizen’s arrest” & call for Police (immediate assistance) on 9222 1111. 3

From The Chairman’s Desk The work towards our new Shed progresses, with members of the Committee researching all the various costs associated with the project. We are also actively seeking sponsors to help supplement our future offer from Lottery West. So if you know a local business or individual who is willing to donate to the building of the new Shed, please let one of the Committee know so we can follow it up. After a meeting with Lottery West and the Council earlier this month, the Community Garden and Shed will be making separate applications to Lottery West. This is so that the Garden is not held up by the Shed’s application. Their request will be substantially smaller than ours, so it will allow them to continue at their own pace, whilst ours being for a considerable sum, will take a while longer. I know Bruce, our Health & Safety officer will be making a presentation on Shed safety, at the next Sundowner, after a recent incident in the woodwork shop. Fortunately the person concerned was not badly injured and his finger should make a full recovery! A moments inattention and a visit to A&E at Armadale hospital was the result. Without labouring the point too much, please ensure that you don’t work alone with machinery in any of our workshops. And, of course, make sure you wear the correct PPE for the task you are doing. The YouthShed is on holiday during July, but will recommence on the 28th. We continue to need volunteers to help supervise, so if you can spare a Tuesday afternoon for 2 hours, please let Bruce or myself know. We have a few events coming up in the near future, so please check the rest of “Bandiwords” so you don’t miss out on our Quiz Night or wife/partner on the first of our Handy Women evenings! I understand the first talk will be on plumbing. Various projects are underway at present, Roy and Lenny are completing the Cubby House having already delivered the Fort. Rumour has it that there is an order for a second Cubby House in the wings, so I hope we don’t run out of materials! Only 10 weeks to the next Market day and 12 weeks to the Karragullen Expo, so please keep up the good work restocking our items for sale. I’m please to let you know we have had three new members join recently, Chris, Mark and Colin. A very warm welcome to them all. On this note, please remember it’s time to renew your membership. We’ve managed to keep it at $55 for the year again, with $2/week for tea or coffee. So far about a third of you have paid your membership, so if you haven’t already done so, please do by visiting the Bendigo Bank or seeing George, our Treasurer.

Regards to all. Phil Aked Chairman -oOo-

-oOo- Gotcha!!! Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting. Well, for example, the other day I went downtown and into a shop. I was only there for about 5 minutes, and when I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket. I said to him, "Come on, man, how about giving a retired person a break?" He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a "Nazi." He glared at me and wrote another ticket for having worn tires. So I called him a "doughnut-eating Gestapo." He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first. Then he wrote a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him the more tickets he wrote. Personally, I didn't care. I came downtown on the bus, and the car that he was putting the tickets on had a bumper sticker that said "Abbott in '13" I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important.

I’m getting older now and can’t tolerate the cold like I used to, so last year my wife and I replaced all the windows in my house with those fancy expensive double-panel energy efficient kind. Gotta nice tax break also. Anyway,

today I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy, Harold, had told me last year when he installed them, and I quote, “In ONE YEAR these windows will pay for themselves!” It's been a year now I told him. There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. Don’t mess with us seniors.

Accident Response Following a recent incident in the woodworking shop it is worth noting the following standing orders of our (& other WAMSA) shed: 1. Never work alone in a workshop – It may not

stop an accident occurring, but it will ensure there is an immediate response to the incident. This could have life saving benefits.

2. In an emergency always sound the alarm - we have an alarm system in the woodworking, metal working shops & the entry foyer to attract the attention of others for assistance.

3. If professional medical treatment is required, & if the injured can be safely moved, take him directly to A&E at Armadale hospital - rather than attend the local doctor’s practice.

4. Remember accident prevention is enhanced when appropriate PPE, for the task being undertaken, is worn.

-oOo- Potential Hazards of Working With Wood Hazards that may be encountered during tasks that involve working with wood include: (a) dusts (inhalation of sanding dusts); (b) ejected materials from

drilling, hammering & sawing,

(c) cutting blades; (d) electric shock from faults in

power tools or leads; (e) chemicals; (f) vapours from glues; and (g) slippery floors caused by

wood dust. A general guide to the management of safety at woodworking machines is provided by WorkSafe WA on their website http://www.safetyline.wa.gov.au under Safetyline Essentials. Timbers and Health Problems The following commonly used woods are known to produce, or are suspected of producing, health problems. Extra care needs to be taken to minimize exposure to dust when machining or working with these woods:- Jarrah; Sheoak; Radiata and other pine; Oregon; Jelutong; Nyatoh; Tasmanian Oak; Blackboy. Studies in Australia and elsewhere have linked wood dust in workplaces to asthma, bronchitis, lung, sinus and throat irritations, shortness of breath and skin problems. The IARC (International Agency for Research into Cancer), after researching nasal cancer among woodworkers in Europe, has classified wood dust a human carcinogen. Wood dust from timbers such as beech and oak, which is fine enough to be inhaled, is known to cause cancer. Other species such as, birch, mahogany, teak and

walnut may also be capable of causing nasal cancer. As this is a rare

form of cancer, the risk is small and generally restricted to the finishing trades where the

dust is fine. Explosion Risk From Wood Dust Wood waste usually has a dust explosion risk where the mean particle size is less than 200 microns, and where as little as 10% of the mixture contains dust less than 80 microns in size. Common ignition sources include naked flames, faulty or unsuitable electrics and impact sparks. To avoid the risk from secondary explosion or fire, it is essential to enforce good housekeeping practices to prevent the accumulation of wood dust within the building such as a formal cleaning regime using appropriate vacuums fitted with HEPA-type filters.

Rasps & Files Rasps and files are hand tools that are used for smoothing and shaping of metal and wood when other edge cutting tools won't do the trick. Files are usually used on metal, while rasps are used for shaping and removal of wood. Rasps and files come in various shapes, and the teeth range from very coarse to very fine.

Operation (Shaping): The shaping or removal of wood from stoke with a rasp is a common operation. 1. Before using, make sure that the rasp has a handle covering the tang. 2. Secure your material with a vice or any other clamping device. 3. Make sure you select the correct type of rasp, and the right coarseness of the teeth. 4. Hold the handle of the rasp in your right

hand, and use your left hand to direct and angle the point of the rasp.(See picture below) 5. To start shaping the wood, hold the rasp at an angle, and apply pressure on the forward stroke as you ride the rasp across. Lift slightly and return. 6. To shape a curved edge, use the round side of the rasp, and twist slightly on the forward stroke. 7. Remember to use a file card to clean the teeth when they get clogged. Potential hazards: The biggest hazard when using a rasp or file is the tang. The tang is the pointed tip in the handle position. If you do not place a handle over the tang before use, you have a good chance of puncturing your hand or any other part of your body with it. Never use a rasp or file without a handle. Safety practices: Because of potential hazards, the following safety rules must be followed.

x Be sure to perform only operations you know how to do safely. x Always wear safety glasses. x Never wear clothes or other articles that dangle. x Be sure to have firm footing. x Check the rasps and files to make sure they are in good working

order. x Check the stock for foreign objects. x Avoid distractions. x Do not allow others to crowd around you. x Always cover the tang with a handle. x Always have one hand on the handle, and one hand to angle and

guide. x Always secure your material in some way.
