Thonglor's Many Faces

One of Bangkok's most fascinating urban dramas has been the ebb and flow of Soi Thonglor and the area surrounding it. It has been a never ending soap opera of broken dreams, lost fortunes and inflated hype from local media that invariably overstates the area’s virtues and ignores its numerous blemishes. Over the years, Thonglor has changed personalities several times. It appears to have started life as a Thai Chinese enclave and market area away from main part of Bangkok. The expanding city eventually reached and enveloped Thonglor. When I first arrived in Bangkok 12 years ago, Thonglor was loaded with businesses devoted to organizing classy weddings. A short time later, it flirted with becoming a hangout for teenyboppers in search of entertainment and cheap drinks. This was followed by several fits and starts at becoming an upscale dining and shopping area. Restaurants and shops appeared and disappeared almost as often as the sidewalks were ripped up to satisfy an ambitious politician’s view of the future. Thonglor was definitely a place in search of itself. Today Thonglor has moved forward three spaces and backwards two spaces often enough to have finally made some progress. The solidifying factors have been the BTS Skytrain and the arrival of upscale condos and serviced apartments. Largely inhabited by Japanese and European tenants, Thonglor's numerous new residents have brought the stability and money that was missing when virtually everyone who came to shop and eat arrived by car and had only recently reached puberty. Thonglor is still evolving and continues to devour new restaurants and other businesses at an alarming rate, but it is definitely maturing and beginning to match some of the hype surrounding it. There are still significant problems w i th s idewalks made impassable by encroaching businesses, traffic jams and cars blocking the roads and, most significantly, a lack of adequate public transportation

and places to park cars. But things are improving, including an obvious crackdown by police on illegal and double parking on Soi Thonglor itself. To introduce you to the eating and drinking opportunities of the area, Bangkok Best Dining & Entertainment takes an imaginary stroll down Soi Thonglor, starting at Sukhumvit Road and walking toward Petchaburi Road at the other end. Please join us as we explore the many faces of Soi Thonglor, but don't forget that we have not included everything. To experience the real Thonglor, you will have to do the walking yourself..

7

Page 10: Bangkok Best Dining August 2012 Issue

As we begin our stroll down the left side of Soi Thonglor toward Petchaburi Road, no restaurant or business stands out from the crowd. Surprisingly, the buildings are aging low-rise shophouses sitting on land worth millions. There are a couple of tiny places selling Thai food, including Hoi Tod Chaw Lae, a little hole in the wall well-known for its oyster and mussel omelets. Notable for their grease and the crunch provided by cornstarch added to the eggs, they might be heart stopping, but they are also delicious. Further along, we encounter Dawon, Gyuma and Konan Harumon Heizo, Japanese/Korean BBQ places with bargain priced 'BBQ buffets'. In the same area you will encounter Grand Ramen and Grand Teppanyaki, serving (you got it) cheapo teppanyaki and noodle dishes. The opposite side of the road is more interesting. Just a few meters from Sukhumvit is May Veggie Home, an amazingly inexpensive Thai vegetarian place with an imaginative menu. Next to it is Hong Kong Congee, a humble little spot serving Chinese comfort items that is evidence that years back Thonglor was a Chinese enclave. A bit further down the street, you'll encounter a K-ca Ramen outlet, a member of a local chain noted especially for its miso ramen. Nearby is another veggie haven, J Cafe at The Yoga Place, serving dishes similar to those at May Veggie Home. A few doors down is a real find: Kikusui An, a Japanese restaurant with its name written only in Japanese.

Thonglor Soi 1It features great food that is exquisitely presented, but offered at very reasonable prices. If you want to get a taste of what Japanese food is really all about, this is the place to find it without going bankrupt. Next door, you will encounter Seoul and Soul Food Mahanakorn. The former is a personal favorite and a good for beer, Japanese BBQ and other basic Japanese dishes; the latter is the brainchild of Jarrett Wrisley, an American writer whose small restaurant serves a variety of Thai dishes like you would find on the street, but in cleaner and more comfortable surroundings. In the same area you will also find Kum Hyang, another Korean BBQ place; and Mokkori Ramen, a scruffy spot serving a variety of so-so Japanese noodle and rice dishes, but with a picturesque (bizarre?) proprietor who more than makes up makes up for his restaurant's shortcomings. Still on the right hand as you arrive at Soi 2, you will find Fifty-Fifth Thonglor, a newly refurbished building with a large parking lot. It features several new Oishi outlets with their predictable Japanese/Thai food and a See Fah restaurant (set to open shortly), a part of a local chain that has been around for 75 years with a menu featuring Chinese and Thai items. The place you shouldn't miss here is ros niyom, a small restaurant with a menu featuring traditional Thai dishes from northern Thailand prepared the way they used to be. It is already popular and was packed at lunchtime when I visited. My khao soi (Chiang Mai-style curry noodles) was fantastic!

Back on the left side, the only restaurant of note between Soi's 1&3 is Ana Garden, an outdoor hangout that had been around for years, but recently closed for several months. It has reopened, but it remains to be seen if it will regain the popularity it once had. Further down the road at the Soi 3 intersection is Maru Kaiseki Restaurant, one of the city's premier Japanese restaurants with a classic menu serving kaiseki meals and a host of other items, including what CNN describes as Bangkok's best sushi. Although you can snack fairly cheaply here, this is an expensive restaurant frequented primarily by Japanese executives with fat expense accounts. As you continue down Thonglor you will find no restaurants between Soi's 3&5,but there is lots of action across the street. Right at Soi 4, Beccofino , an Italian restaurant with

10

Page 13: Bangkok Best Dining August 2012 Issue

a talented Italian chef and good food is a commanding presence with a somewhat rundown exterior. Next door is The Market Place, an outdoor mini-mall, dominated by a large Tops Supermarket and blessed with a parking lot. It features several fast food and drink spots, plus a Wine Loft outlet with outdoor seating, snacks and, of course, lots ofgood wine. Opposite Wine Loft is Doong Deng Dai, serving traditional 'boat noodle' dishes, but with nary a boat in sight. Although iberry is noted for its ice cream, the outlet here serves a wide variety of well prepared Thai dishes and desserts at its 'sweet cafe and restaurant'. Above the Tops supermarket is Kagonya, an upscale Japanese place serving excellent shabu shabu and 40 different set lunch combinations starting at only 280 baht.

Things now start to heat up a bit as you approach the middle section of Soi Thonglor. Adjacent to the entrance to Soi 5 on the left side of Thonglor is the Somerset Serviced Apartments. The ground floor front of the building contains three excellent restaurants: The Orient, a branch of a well-known traditional Thai eatery established in 1981 on Sukhumvit Soi 49; Gyu-Kaku, a yakiniku spot with a popular sister restaurant on Soi Thaniya in the Silom district; and Mai Kitchen, serving Japanese dishes and drink designed to please residents of the Somerset. Further down the street is a Thonglor landmark, Ni Yom Pochana, a storefront eatery with no décor and stainless steel tables that spill out onto (and block) the sidewalk. It serves a collection of excellent Thai-Chinese seafood items, including stir-fried crab with curry sauce, at rock bottom prices. Just beyond this is Chen Shark's Fin, another humble place with a wide variety of Chinese items popular with many Thais, including shark's fin soup. Although the food here is good, many give the restaurant a pass because it serves, shark's fin dishes, a major cause of diminishing shark populations. After Chen Shark's Fin, there is nothing of interest on the left side of Thonglor, but there is a lot to talk about on the right side. At the entrance to Soi 6, we find Phuket Town, a quaint little yellow fronted restaurant that is outfitted Sino-Portuguese style like some of the old buildings down south in Phuket. The menu features the proprietor's family recipes from the south of Thailand. Signature dishes at this highly recommended restaurant include khanom jeen noodles doused with crabmeat curry and shrimp stir-fried with sataw beans. The sataw beans are extremely bitter, but for some reason match well with shrimp, creating a truly unique dish the likes of which you will only find in Thailand. A short distance down the road at Soi 8 a newly created high-rise, Eight Thonglor, looms into the sky. The building is home to a massive serviced apartment complex operated by Pan Pacific and with several shops and restaurants, all of which have access to the building's parking facilities. On the ground floor with a large terrace overlooking the street, you'll find Crepes & Co, noted not only for its crepes, but frequent promotions of Spanish, Moroccan and Greek dishes. The food here is always lively and well-prepared. Nara 8, a very attractive Thai restaurant with a wide range of traditional favorites, also has a terrace and attractive interior seating. If you want coffee and some delicious desserts, Parferio at the building's entrance, is where you will find them. The lower level, dominated by a Foodland supermarket, has Hola, a charming little Spanish restaurant 12

to Soi 9featuring tapas and a few classic dishes like paella. Opposite the entrance to Foodland is Tadaima Restaurant & Izakaya with little atmosphere, but lots of 88 baht snacks, some inexpensive sets and loads to drink, including a good selection of sochu and sake. Inside the supermarket, Took Lae Dee is a Foodland trademark. If Thailand were going to have a Woolworth's diner like you used to find in the USA, this is the place. Compact and with a long counter, it is open 24 hours and features a short menu of international and Thai favorites at low prices. Especially noteworthy is its American breakfast at only 54 baht from 05.30 to 21:00 and 65 baht during the rest of the day and night. Up on the 2 floor, you'll find Beirut, an excellent Lebanese restaurant; Masala Art, an Indian restaurant with a collection of great dishes from all areas of India and a smashing terrace; and two Japanese places, Katana and Sushicyu & Carnival Yakiniku, that I have yet to try.

veeded excitement to the local Japanese dining scene. Adjacent to Rakuza is Water Library, one of the most exciting restaurants to arrive in Bangkok in years. It is featured in our 'Stars of Thonglor' section at the end of this article. Among the other restaurants at Grass, Mugendai Tempura Bar & Sushi Bar is worth noting. Located on the 7 floor of the Grass Serviced Residence building, it serves marvelous sushi and arguably the best tempura in Bangkok. Tempura, to be at its dry and crispy best, must not sit around to get limp and soggy. Mugendai, unlike many local restaurants, recognizes this fact and cooks tempura to order and has it in front of you shortly thereafter. Once again, out on Soi Thonglor, we come to Kazokutei Japanese Udon & Soba just before reaching Soi 12. It is a typical chain restaurant with a modern interior serving massive bowls of udon and soba, plus a limited selection of other items. Between Soi 12 and 14, there are some places of interest. Iron Fairies, is a tiny little spot with a small bar and a few tables. A product of Ashley Sutton’s vivid imagination, it is dimly lit, reminiscent of something from a fairy tale and also a workshop for actually making iron fairies. Surprisingly, the short menu features what have got to be the city’s best hamburgers. There is also a selection of wine, cocktails and other drinks. A few doors down is Peking Restaurant, a part of a popular local chain offering a variety of Chinese dishes from

northern China. Beyond this at the corner Soi 14, there is a real find: Nobu. This diminutive Japanese spot is very popular at lunch when its set lunches always produce a full house. Very inexpensive – starting around 150 baht – they provide a multi-course meal of fresh, delicious ingredients that are attractively presented. In the evening there are also set meals and a good selection of a la carte dishes.

Thonglor Soi 13

Perhaps the most exciting thing to happen in the Thonglor area during the past year is the rise of Soi 13. The last time I was there, I walked through a parking lot adjacent to the soi. A Lamborghini suddenly tooled into the lot, motor rumbling mightily as it cruised by, the ground shaking so much that the alarm on one of the parked cars went off! Lamborghinis, Ferraris, an occasional Bentley, Soi 13 has become a haven not only for Bangkok's hiso's and celebs, but also foodies interested in some of the city'strendiest food. On the left, a few meters down the soi, you'll find the newly opened SeenSpace, a small community mall devoted to shops and numerous exciting places to eat and drink. On the ground floor, there is Fat’r Gut’z, a bigger version of Ash Sutton’s Fat Gut’z with an enlarged food menu that includes some tasty fusion dishes like a smashing Samui Cajun crab cake with spicy mango sauce. Next door, Brew Beers & Ciders proudly announces it has the largest selection of beer available in Thailand. With 140 different brews from around the world currently available, this place takes beer drinking seriously. It also offers Europeansnacks and platters and a wide selection of cigars that can be enjoyed on its outdoor terrace. Clouds, another Ashley Sutton creation, features a futuristic interior with tiny silver balls said to represent raindrops, stone furniture and an army of Barbie Dolls hanging from the ceiling. I fail to see the purported connection with nature, but find it awesome and different. Like Sutton’s other places, Clouds features cocktails inspired by Joseph Boroski (how about Rocky Road ice cream and vodka?) and some great tasting snack food, including some of the tastiest pizza we’ve had in a long time. Up on the second level, don’t miss the very popular Roast, a multi-purpose eatery great for coffee and tapas style snacks that often have a Thai flare. Much of the hype heaped on

Hanako Kappo Restaurant

19

Page 21: Bangkok Best Dining August 2012 Issue

20

SeenSpace has been devoted to BonChon, a franchise of an American chain serving Korean-style chicken that has gone viral in the USA. The flap centers on the ultra-crispy chicken that is served with a choice of two sauces: hot or soy garlic. There is, of course, much more to eat and some hefty drinks featuring sochu, Korea’s well know fire water. Also on the upper levels are a Gyu-Gyu Tei O-Jung, an upscale yakinikuspot and Wine Me Up, a wine bar cum eatery that rises above the ordinary. It has a selection of 60 excellent wines from around the world, including six wines by the glass. The food, like the snapper with prune sauce and fettuccine, has Italian overtones and is competitively priced. Across the road at the entrance to a narrow soi leading to Soi 15, is After You Dessert Café, a wonderful little place with a wide selection of cakes and other desserts that is popular with shoppers and young couples. Further on down Soi 13 on the left, you will encounter two, local holes in the wall; Luk Kaithong serves a selection of Thai favorites and the tasteless but amazingly named Pimp Daddy Gipsy Grill serves a selection of western snacks. When you come to the first intersection if you look to the right you will find 4Garcons, a surprisingly good French style bistro operated by a local doctor and three friends. This is

a good place to chill out and enjoy yourself while snacking on brasserie style French eats and drinks. Almost next door is Hanako Kappo Restaurant, an impressive looking Japanese place with a comprehensive menu that is open to until midnight. If you continue on Soi 13, you’ll arrive at Nihonmura Mall, a Japanese enclave that could have been transplanted directly from Japan. On most nights there is not a Thai or farang in sight, meaning the food is authentically Japanese. There several specialty restaurants, plus Uomasa, a general purpose place with an excellent sushi bar at the entrance. Across the street you will find Miso-Ya, a Japanese noodle place serving miso based noodles designed to turn anyone into a samurai. Woodstock, once a popular fixture at Nana Plaza, is next door. It features drinks, good retro music and some excellent dishes, including some of Bangkok’s best burgers, sandwiches and salads. Sadly, it appears to be struggling, but I hope it can hang on. There is parking in a lot located behind the place, a definite plus in this difficult to park neighborhood.

Thonglor Soi 13 to Soi 17

Back on Soi Thonglor on the left hand side, the strip between Soi 13 and Soi 15 is without a restaurant and on the right hand side there are only two places. Oyshimbo II, another Japanese spot, was formerly noted primarily as a watering hole, but it now offers a wider selection of Japanese comfort dishes along with its copious supply of drinks. Boon Tong Kiat Singapore Chicken Rice, a bit further down the road, is another Thonglor landmark. Its specialty is poached chicken and rice cooked in fat laden chicken stock and Boon Tong Kiat serves it in all its glory along with several other Chinese dishes like you will find in Singapore. Don’t expect anything fancy here, but it is spotlessly clean and blessed with better than average service for this type of eatery. Across the street at beginning of Thonglor Soi 15, you'll discover J Avenue, a central gathering point for Thonglor

residents and visitors. It is a community mall with a few shops, several restaurants, a Villa supermarket, on site parking and a bowling alley up on top. On the ground level in addition to an au bon pain, McDonald's and an iberry ice cream shop, there is a Mousses & Meringues serving delicious cheesecakes and other desserts and a Greyhound Cafe dishing-up a well-prepared selection of local and international dishes to a hip and cosmopolitan clientèle. All of the ground floor restaurants have outdoor seating, making J Avenue an ideal place to watch the beautiful people of Thonglor stroll by.

Page 23: Bangkok Best Dining August 2012 Issue

22

Up on the second floor, there are several restaurants, but only Ootoya and Sonie's with views of Thonglor seem to do very well. Ootoya is a Japanese chain with outlets throughout the world that serve Japanese comfort dishes in a plastic atmosphere characteristic of restaurant chains. Although it has moved several times, Sonie's serves a selection of Japanese fusions dishes – usually a blend of Italian and Japanese. Most of the blends are nothing to write home about, but the unique sushi rolls like the Oh My God! Roll with spicy tuna and avocado and the Caterpillar Roll with rice wrapped with thinly sliced avocado to make them resemble a caterpillar are unique and delicious. Across the street from J-Avenue is Penny's Balcony, with an exciting collection of places to eat and drink. If you enjoy beer and snacks you will love, House of Beers (HOBS), a noisy pub-like spot with flat screened TV's and loads of babbling customers on its ample terrace. A smaller sister to Brew at SeenSpace on Thonglor Soi 13, it serves, among other things, 20 different Belgian beers, including bottled Chimay, Tripel Karmeliet and Trappistes Rochefort 8 plus Hoegaarden on tap. There are a variety of thing to eat, but the delicious frites, served in a large beer glass and accompanied with three sauces, conger up visions of Belgium. Next door is She Bar, a capital location for drinks and Thai eats. Adjacent to this is a real find for wine lovers who love to eat and snack on quality Italian fare. Roberto Ferin, a dynamo from Milan, has opened di Vino, a wine bar cum small Italian restaurant. This place is not only fun, especially if you can engage the colorful Roberto in a conversation, the food is extraordinary. On the end of Penny's Balcony is Mellow, a largish place that manages to lift itself above the ordinary. Its menu of pastas, salads and Thai/international fusion dishes is surprisingly good and the selection of cocktails and drinks is well-conceived. When this is coupled with its modern, but comely interior, it is a bang up place to visit.

The restaurants and watering holes now thin about a bit, but there are still many places to eat and drink. On theleft side of Thonglor beween Sois 17 and 19, this mildly grungy section of the soi has several small restaurants and some intriguing holes in the wall. My favorites are Xuan Mai, a simple Vietnamese place with good and authentic food and Joke Me Please, a Hong Kong-style Chinese eatery with congee, roast duck and other Hong Kong favorites. Spaghetti House has an interesting concept, but I find the pasta and noodles a disappointing and confused fusion of Asian and Western specialties. If you are into holes in the wall, you will love Hattori, a minuscule place serving a surprisingly large selection of Japanese home-style dishes. On my last visit, they were featuring beer on an 'all you can drink basis' for 480 baht, a promotion that for me was like waving a red flag in front of a bull! At Soi 19 be sure to make a left turn and head down the road for about 300 meters. At a jog in the road, you will find Patara, one of the city's premier Thai restaurants. It is such a find, we have included a separate review of it in the 'Stars of Thonglor' section at the end of this article. Meanwhile on the right side of Soi Thonglor opposite the entrance to Thonglor Soi 25, you'll find Royal Kitchen, a popular Chinese restaurant with a large subterranean parking lot. The Cantonese-style food here gets good reviews. Its dim sum is popular at lunchtime and on Sundays it is a regular stop for many local Thai-Chinese families. Down the road a bit at the newly opened Noble Solo Condominium is White Cafe. Designed by the renowned Duangrit Bunnag, this classy establishment features massive windows, a lofty ceiling and a glass enclosed kitchen that occupies at least a quarter of the floor space. The extensive menu is mostly Thai, but there is an ample selection of fusion eats and simple Western fare like pasta and steaks. On the opposite side of the road is our last Thonglor restaurant and another landmark. Mandarin Roast Duck Restaurant. As the name implies, the roast duck hanging in a front window is the specialty and it is always packed in the evening with those who don't mind having Donald and Daffy for dinner.

Located at the trendy ‘Grass’ complex in Thong Lor; Water Library is re-interpreting the concept of urban fine dining. It has a decidedly masculine feel to it with sumptuous leather furnishings, dark wood accents and decorative bottles of champagne and top shelf spirits lining the walls. It’s all about exclusivity with seating for only 10 diners per evening and a masterful 12 course tasting menu paired with world class wines priced at 8400++Baht per person. Dinner begins at 730PM with one of a kind cocktails served up by the talented mixologists at the bar. Guests are ushered upstairs to the interactive chefs table where brigades of talented international chefs orchestrate an audacious menu of delicacies that challenges your assumptions while stimulating your senses. We were treated to gastronomic delights such as Beluga Caviar w/ Iberico Ham Jelly & Asparagus Ice Cream and a stunningly elegant Heirloom Carrot Brulee with Horsehair Crab, Sea Urchin & Cumin Caramel. Other highlights included the Perigord Foie Gras Two Ways w/ Smoked Ayu & Hibiscus Vinaigrette; as well as the earthy White Asparagus w/ Comte Cheese & Suckling Pig Four Ways, and the sublime Challans Roasted Duck w/ Lavender, Endives & Sauce Poivrade. Each course exceeded expectations, as it was artfully plated and served with skillful precision and helpful tips on how to approach each dish to maximize your dining pleasure. To end your evening in style, be sure to stop by their recently-opened high end wine bar across the courtyard for a formidable after dinner cocktail. Water Library is well deserving of their stellar reputation as they effortlessly blend casual comfort, luxury service, provocative cuisine and an avant-garde dining concept.

Patara is a delightful combination of modern and traditional, both in décor and in cuisine. The restaurant combines tasteful Thai art and memorabilia and subdued modern chocolate and burgundy surroundings into in a setting that is both warm and elegant. The menu is mostly traditional, but some dishes employ new and unique ingredients while still retaining essential Thai flavors. No matter what the ingredients, however, the presentations are always impressive without being overly fussy. During a recent visit we were impressed with everything, a couple of dishes stood out however. The Tamarind glazed crispy fried duck confit with a sprinkling of crips shallots and chili was a superb combination of flavors. Perhaps our favorite dish of the evening was the Tumeric scented crabmeat yellow curry served with traditional rice noodles, one of the restaurants signature dishes. The spicing of the delightful curry is emphatically delicious, but care is taken to insure it doesn't overpower the delicate crab. We also enjoyed the signature Braised New Zealand lamb in massaman curry, a splendid rendition of a traditional curry with a non-traditional main ingredient that has been a favorite at the restaurant for several years. Patara has a large and comely entry area with a bar along one wall. It is a splendid place to start with a signature cocktail like a Bangkok Martini, an inspired combination of gin, vermouth, lemongrass and kaffir lime. before moving on to the dining room. Patara has a excellent wine list, especially selected to match well with Thai food. For those interested in having a party or business gathering, Patara has three lavishly fitted private rooms upstairs.
